Chapter 12: Fate's Fatalities
The mourning party, consisting of Ryder, Chase, Rubble, Skye, Wildcat and Eleftherios, trudged slowly through the park, crying silent tears of grief for their mixed breed friend. They didn't know what to say, didn't know what to feel. There was an empty hole in their hearts. The PAW Patrol would never be the same. How were they meant to cope in a world where their loved one would never again step out of his green pumphouse, never flash another smile, and never complain about getting wet? Their hearts sobbed out in pain for their lost comrade, and the tears that flowed testified to it.
Ryder and Eleftherios were hit the hardest. Ryder swore to himself when he had officially created the PAW Patrol to never let any serious harm befall any of his pups, and yet not more than a year and a half later, one died because he couldn't save them. He sobbed, inwardly and outwardly, collapsing to his knees, letting them sink into the damp soil beneath. He didn't know what to do, what to say. He was mortified over what he had let happen to his beloved Rocky. He crumpled over further, weeping for the agony in his heart, for the misery in his soul, and the guilt he endured over his broken oath. What's more, it began to rain, slowly at first but then in torrents, thunder clashing overhead. Ryder didn't even notice. He didn't care.
Eleftherios was broken mentally. Maybe not as much as Zuma had been, staring up at the ceiling in the hotel room, knowing he probably couldn't live any longer with the sorrow in his heart, but still broken nonetheless. He trudged down the paved path, staring gloomily at the ground as his tears wet the trail he treaded. He had had only one true friend, only one pup like him whom he could be himself around, play with, and enjoy spending time with; and he only got to spend a day with him. He physically began to cry, heaving sobs leaving his body in choked resonance, unpriced by the people around him who were now running to there cars in an attempt to escape the approaching storm up above. Soon after, the impending rain fell, drenching him to the skin. He didn't give a damn. He didn't give a damn about his life anymore. He didn't give a damn about living. So why keep living? It was pointless now anyway. But......no, he had to live, because if he were to die, his pain would only be passed to the ones who cared about him, and as far as he knew, that now still only consisted on Tobias and Lydia. He couldn't do that to them, and never would.
He noticed the pavement change beneath his paws, and looked up to find he was on the far end of the park, near the exit. "I might as well go home. I don't have any other reason to stay here." He mused as he trudged on down the sidewalk, taking a left and continuing to take various turns down streets, only looking up to verify where he was, until he came to his small house. "Actually, Tobias and Lydia are supposed to be home by now. I forgot all about it!" He thought, and ran up their little steps to the front door. He tried to duck in through the doggy door, but there was a board bolted in. "That's weird; I don't remember Tobias putting in a board on the doggy door before he left. Why would he? I'm still living here." He thought questioningly, his suspicions risen. He backed up to take a look at the house, and sure enough, boards had been put on all the windows. He ran to the back, and everything was the same there too. "What's going on? I still live here! And Tobias and Lydia are coming back today! What am I supposed to say when they show up and their house is all boarded up like the owners have......." His mind trailed and his eyes got wide as a thought occurred to him. Houses only got boarded up if the owners......had died! But...but....Tobias and Lydia weren't dead, were they? They couldn't be!
Scared now, Eleftherios ran to the front door again, taking note of any particular detail that might clue him in. And he found one; a note hung low on the front door....too low. No human would put a note for someone that low on the door, unless........that someone was a pup. He scrambled to it, carefully ripping it off the door with his teeth as it was soggy from the still pooring rain. Lydia had taught him how to read, and this time it came in handy. His eyes got even wider as he read the note. It read:
Dear Eleftherios,
I'm sorry to say that your owners, Tobais and Lydia Venezulos, will not be returning to you. They were killed instantly in a plane crash headed from Athens to Marseille. The house has been seized by the authorities. We're sorry for your loss.
Condolences,
Dr. Harry Steinitz
"No.....no...no no no no no no. This can't be happening. This can't be.....this can't....I.....This is just a bad dream. No. No! NOOOOO!!!!" He screamed, the realization of reality finally hitting him like a semi truck. "I've.....just lost.......everything. My life. My family. My home. Gone." He was just too broken to even cry. He just sat down, hyperventilation setting in as well as hypothermia from being exposed to the cold rainwater. He looked up at the sky, the dark thundering clouds growling at him from the heavens. He could only think to say one thing; "W...w...why, L...Lord?"
................
The four PAW Patrol pups who had come to the park sat a few feet away from their beloved leader, crying in the rain, wishing there was some way to reverse the damage, undo what had been done. Their little circle of grief, sniffling and hiccuping, staring solemnly at the earth at their feet, never even noticed Eleftherios had left. Either that or they were just too depressed to care. Chase heard footsteps approaching them, high heels clicking and making little splashes as the presumed woman strolled past the grieving bunch in the pooring rain. Only, once she got to Ryder, she knelt down and placed what sounded like something next to the boy; Ryder didn't even acknowledge her presence or the fact she had just set something next to him. But Chase knew, and was curious. He looked up slowly, rain and tears streaming down his cheeks, and what he saw next to Ryder struck him dumbfounded. He stared at it in all it's beauty as it was pelted from the storm, wondering how the heck the lady had even found one. He then remembered that the lady had left behind him, and turned back momentarily to see a faint silhouette of a woman strolling away, the faint click-click of high heel on pavement reaching his ears. His next thought as he turned back was, "Now all we need is Eleftherios, and then we can bring it back to Jax." He glanced beside him where he thought the collie pup should be......and saw an empty space. He jumped up, whirling around in confusion and slowly mounting panick. Eventually, he broke the silence, startling everyone including, surprisingly, Ryder. " Hey Elef! Where are you!? We found a sunflower!"
A/N This story was like all my depressed thoughts in a bottle being spewed forth onto the page, being soaked with my tears all throughout the writing process. Lol. It was just really sad and difficult to write. Uhhh.....so...uhh, yeah, uh, that's all I had to say. Bye now, and thanks again. ;')
