Chapter One

I have the best seats in the house. Front row center at the Wells Fargo center to surprise my best friend. This is her first time back to our hometown to perform with her band. Lindsey Zimmerman or Lind-Z to her fans is the lead singer of Down & Out. Lindsey is joined by Ben Hawk, lead guitar, Sean Hoffman, bass, and Brian "Razer" Johnson on drums. In the past five years, I have only seen pictures of the band. Though Lindsey and I have emailed and texted we haven't seen each other since we graduated from high school.

After high school, Lindsey decided to jump into a van and travel the country playing dive bars. It was during this time she accumulated the guys that are now in her band. I chose a different route. A much safer and duller route. I went to college and became a high school history teacher. So, while Lindsey has made a name for herself in the world of Rock N Roll, I have been grading papers, holding study halls and making sure my kids learn about history so they don't repeat it.

Finally, the lights dim and you can see faintly the band coming on stage. The crowd becomes restless and starts chanting, "Down & Out". I can see Lindsey step up to the mic. I silently hope she doesn't quite see me yet. When the lights flash on the stage the drum beats set a frantic pace. I was suddenly nervous. The guitar screamed to the beat of the butterflies in my stomach. I hoped this surprise would be a good one. Lindsey begins her first song and she completely owns the stage.

I was in awe of my best friend. She was completely awesome. Though Down & Out were still fairly new on the Rock N Roll scene the crowd was singing along with their songs. I found myself drawn into the concert and completely lost myself in the rough rock sound. It was hard to believe my best friend was a rock star.

After two songs that seamlessly blended into one, Lind-Z stepped up to the mic, "Hello Philly! Its great to be home! Thank you for coming out tonight. I know we are warming you up for the real stars tonight, Hardly Angels. So, let's get down to business and rock out!"

Those wicked drums started playing again. I found myself drawn to that beat. Razer's muscles glisten in the stage's lights. His hands move swiftly over the drums. I couldn't help myself. I couldn't take my eyes off of him. My body was being drawn in by the rhythm he was creating. He was a master at his craft. It wasn't long after staring at this obscenely good looking rock star that I realized Lindsey had been singing. Blushing I forced myself to watch everyone. Though I tried to concentrate on everyone in the band my eyes kept going toward Razer.

Toward the end of their set Razer had a wicked drum solo. The world seemed to slow and all that existed was Razer and his drums. I had to check myself a few times to make sure I wasn't literally drooling. When Razer smiled out on the crowd we locked eyes. That was when my world stopped. His smile turned seductive and showed a dimple on his right cheek. I blushed again and looked away from him. Unfortunately, that was when I saw Lindsey noticing our little moment and saw her best friend was in the crowd.

Razer's solo finally ended and Lind-Z grabbed the mic, "Hey Philly! Are you having fun? We are Down & Out and you guys have been the best audience." The crowd screamed.

"Before we leave," Lind-Z continued, "and the band you really came to see comes on I have one shout out to make. My best friend, who I haven't seen in 5 long years, is here. Let's give her enough shouting and clapping to make her turn 10 shades of red." The spotlight shown on me and the crowd started cheering.

"Well that was about 5 shades. Come on Philly, let's make it 10!" Lind-Z shouted into the mic.

The crowd was deafeningly loud. I felt myself get bright red and looked up at my soon to be ex-best friend. She had a devilish smile. I mouthed how I was going to kill her and she just smiled wider.

"I think you did it, Philly! Now, onto our last song! Thank you again, Philly! We love you!" Lind-Z said.

I was lost to Down & Out's last song and the rippling of Razer's muscles that I didn't notice the mountain that was now standing next to me. It wasn't until his meaty paw tapped my shoulder that I looked up and had to keep looking up until I saw his square jaw, thinned lips and dark eyes. His nose appeared to have been broken a number of times and his backward cap hid his hair.

"Please come with me." His deep voice sounded over the song. It was then that I noticed the Down & Out logo on his shirt.

"Ok." I said hesitantly.

He moved me through the crowd that parted for this mountain. The sea of people stayed focused on the band while we found ourselves headed toward what seemed like backstage. I had never been backstage of anything before. Once the mountain told the guy standing by the entrance that I was with him he led me further into the organized chaos. The bustling of backstage overwhelmed me. The security/bodyguard/moving mountain pointed to a clear area and indicated I stay in that spot.

When he turned to go I said, "Hey wait!

"Just stay here." He said impatiently

"I will but just tell me what your name is in case someone wants to know who left me here."

He paused for a second debating on whether he should tell me. Then he said, "Jared" and left me standing there.

I was only standing there a moment when I heard an ear piercing scream. I looked around expecting to see a groupie and only saw the lead singer of Down & Out running full speed on precariously high heels straight at me.

"Oh my God, Jenna!" She said squeezing me in a tight hug. "Why didn't you tell me you were coming?"

I looked at her a bit closer now that I didn't have Razer and his made for sin body distracting me. She was wearing a sequined tube top, painted on leather pants and sky scraper heels. Her make-up was smudged and her pink and blonde hair was a bit limp from sweating onstage. But, it was her smile that was the same one that I have known since Kindergarten, a little bit of angel mixed with a little bit of devil.

"It wouldn't have been a surprise then would it?" I smiled.

"Well now your here and we have to totally catch up. Oh and I want you to meet the guys." She put her arm around me and pulled/dragged me toward a more crowded area.

"So, tell me everything, Jenna. What has been going on with you?"

Before I could answer, a deep, very masculine voice stopped us. "Hey, Lind-Z! Great set! You guys rocked!"

That gravelly voice belonged to the very hot lead singer of Hardly Angels, Joey Beckon. I stood there staring at this rock god. His short mussed hair framed an almost pretty face. My gaze drifted lower and I saw the sleeves of tattoos on his arms that disappeared into a wife beater. The wife beater clearly covered well-toned abs was tucked into his low slung jeans. He finished his ensemble with a pair of Doc Martens. Joey oozed sex and from the smile on his face he knew he did.

I was forced out of my rock god induced coma by Lindsey replying, "Thanks, Joey. I'm sure you guys are gonna kill it tonight!" She smiled.

"Oh don't worry baby we will. So, who is your friend?" He smiled that panty melting smile.

"This is Jenna. Jenna, this is Joey Beckon." The sharpness of her tone made me tear my gaze from him and give her a questioning look.

"Glad to meet you, Jenna." He shook my hand and said, "Will I see you at the after party?"

"Um....Uh" was all I could sputter.

"I haven't gotten around to asking her yet, Joey" Lindsey snapped.

"Well, I hope to see you there, Jenna." He said and stroked the knuckles of my hand before moving toward that stage where the screaming fans and the opening chords of their first song awaited him.
