Chapter One
"I've climbed this hill and I will die in it." She dropped the bag she had been holding and collapsed on the ground, breathing heavily.
"Shut up. We've been hiking for 15 minutes." I nudged her side with my foot. "Maybe you're just out of shape." I teased. I offered her a hand up. She took it.
"I am in shape Dani, that shape just happens to be an egg."
I laughed. Hi, I'm Danielle. Most people in my life call me Dani. And this person with me? That would be my best friend, Leslie. As she so bluntly put it, we had been hiking up this mountain for the last 15 minutes. I honestly felt kinda tired too.
I sat down on a rock to re-tie my shoe laces. I looked around, and saw an overhang about 20-30 feet above us. I finished tying my shoe laces. "Hey Les, you see that overhang?"
"Yeah, why?"
"We're gonna climb it. "
She looked at me like I had grown a second head. "We're gonna what now?"
"Climb it."
"No."
"Please?"
"I said no. It doesn't look that stable."
"It's just a little rock ledge!" I said. "It's not that far a fall."
"It's thirty feet above us. How is that not a far fall?"
"We could eat lunch up there." I looked at her.
She thought a minute. "Fine. But only because I'm really hungry."
"Yes!"
I took a container of hand chalk out of my bag and chalked up my hands. I passed it to Leslie.
"You're crazy you know." She took it. "This is the dumbest idea I've heard out of you all month." She rubbed some chalk on her hands.
"Rude." I mumbled. She handed the chalk back to me and I put it in my bag. I looked at the small rock face again, scanning for ledges or crevices. There were a few scattered around, they weren't very deep though. We can manage though, right? I ignored the thought, and started up the rock face.
"Dani, be careful!" Leslie said.
"I'm only a few feet off the ground, I'll be fine."
She rolled her eyes and started after me.
We got to the over hang with few stumbles. We sat down at the edge with our legs dangling off the edge. The view was awesome from up here. It's amazing how much you can see with just a little change of perspective. I could see the trees in the valley between small mountain range, I could see a flock of birds flying from a tree. I could see across to the other mountain. I could see-
"Dani."
I snapped out of my thoughts. "What?"
"The food. You said we could eat."
"Oh! Right. Sorry." I handed her a peanut butter sandwich and took one out for myself.
"What are you thinking about?" She unwrapped her sandwich and took a bite.
"This view." I said. "Look at this view. I can see everything. In fact, I think that's my house over there." I pointed to a small white building with a gray roof.
She took a sip from her water bottle. "Yeah, it's beautiful, isn't it. I've never seen the mountains from here." We usually just hiked around the base of the mountain and climbed the rock faces on the other side. We couldn't fit the harnesses or the other gear in our bags, so this was the next best thing.
We stayed up on that ledge for a while and time flew by as it tends to do. After about half an hour of talking about random topics, like the next rain we were gonna get, her sheep's new lamb, cookie recipes, and other stuff, the sun sank low until the horizon. I squinted my eyes as I looked at the mix of fiery red and orange, fading to a lighter pink color, and finally into a beautiful blue, freckled with the first stars starting to show.
"We should probably head back." I said. "My parents were expecting us to be back by now."
She nodded, and we started out way down the same series of ledges and crevices we came up on. She went first, and I followed her. I looked at the sky, which had darkened a bit since I last saw it. I figured we should hurry up and get back before it started to storm. Suddenly, I heard a yelp sound from below me.
Shit.
I quickly turned my head to see Leslie losing her grip on on the stone. I kept both hands clutching the rock and watched helplessly as she fell. In two seconds, she had peeled away from the rock face and plummeted about ten feet into a tree, where her ankle hit a thick tree branch. Hard. It sent her spinning, and she fell another fifteen feet to the ground, landing on her back with a sickening thud.
Thankfully, her back pack had flown off and landed under her head, for once making me relieved she never buckled the chest strap. Her ankle however, hadn't been so lucky.
Her injured ankle had landed hard on a sharp stone, jutting out from the earth. It was sticking out at an awkward angle. I stared at her in shock before coming to my senses and climbing down quickly before I got to a place I could jump off. I quickly ran over to where Leslie was laying.
"Les? Leslie!" She just let out a small moan. I searched my bag for a first aid kit. A first aid kit that wasn't there. I panicked, you would think I would remember to pack a first aid kit if we were going rock climbing! Curse my stupidity. I looked around us, though I didn't even know what I'm looking for.
I dug around in my bag some more and came across a roll of masking tape. Why it was in there, I don't know. But I figured I could do something with it at least, even if that was to give her something to bite down on while I dragged her home.
I found an 'L' shaped stick. Maybe I could use it as a splint. Hopefully, that would work. I have my doubts though. I put the stick on the side of her foot, careful not to hurt her too much. Now how the tricky part. I picked up the tape and thought about how to do this. I propped her calf up on her leg while I sat down and wrapped the tape around her ankle and the stick, stopping every time I heard her groan unconsciously. This was all my fault, why did I make her do this?
I had finally finished wrapping her leg, when I heard her groan again, louder, it sounded more like a whimper actually. I looked at her face and her eyes began to open. She didn't do anything for a moment, then she saw her leg, and still didn't do anything. I think she was in shock.
Then the pain must've registered in her mind, because she started crying. Now, Leslie has a high pain tolerance, so this made me feel really bad. "Hey Leslie?" I said gently. "Are you okay? Well, um, bad question, I mean, do you think you have a concussion or anything?" She shook her head.
"Don't worry, you'll be okay, we just have to get to my house." I said. Plip, plip, plip. Oh no. I looked up and saw immediately greeted by a drop of water landing on my cheek. I looked back down, swearing under my breath.
It had started to rain.
