Chapter 4: A Roman Thing
"My fellow surface dwellers, today is the day you've all been waiting for! Give him a hand, folks, the kid in the red boots! He's the one who got this killing machine up and running!" Hamegg informed loudly as he hovered on a circular podium.
"You are the golden child. Hamegg really likes you." Cora said as she sat in Zog's left hand that he held just higher than his head.
"I like him, too. What's he mean by 'killing machine'?"Astro asked from Zog's left shoulder.
"Well, the robots fight until one of them is destroyed." (Y/N) answered from beside him.
"What?" Astro exclaimed.
"Don't worry. Zog is gonna crush them all." (Y/N) said confidently.
"That's what happens at the Robot Games?" Astro asked, basically repeating what he said before.
"Well, what did you expect? Rock, paper, scissors?" Cora asked sarcastically.
----------------------------------------------------------
"Who's the robot?" A human asked rhetorically to the robot who sat next the stand he was on.
"I'm the robot." The robot replied with a confident yet shaky voice.
"Who's the robot?" The man continued, an attempt to build up the robot's self esteem.
"I'm the robot!"
"Who's the robot?"
"I'm the robot!!!"
"No mercy."
"No mercy."
"No mercy."
"No mercy."
"No mercy."
"No mercy. No mercy. No mercy!" The robot finished sounding a little more confident. Zog then walked passed them. The robot's metal jaw dropped. "Mercy?" He asked quietly.
"Nice knowing you, kid." The man said with a half smile.
----------------------------------------------------------
"I thought it was a show, not a slaughter." Astro exclaimed.
"They're just robots, son." Hamegg replied blankly.
"I thought you liked robots."
"I do, but at the end of the day, they're just junk waiting to happen. I know, some of those more advanced ones from Metro City are programmed to smile and laugh just like us."
"Really?" Cora asked for confirmation.
"Yeah. Unfortunately, they don't have real emotions, which is why I have no problem doing this!" Hamegg sentence started out calm before his tone became higher at the end as he pointed a device at Astro, electrocuting him. Astro yelped and froze as he slowly fell to the ground. "It worked! I don't believe it!" He exclaimed happily.
"What are you doing?!" (Y/N) asked as she pushed Hamegg away from Astro, although it didn't faze him much.
"I swiped this from Dr. Tenma when he fired me from the Ministry of Science."
"Who cares? Why did you do that to Astro?" Cora asked, also shocked.
"He's our friend!" Sludge added.
"I thought I raised you better. Are you blind? He's a robot!"
"He's- That's not true... It can't be true." Cora said in disbelief.
"Somebody programmed him to be nice. He's not really nice. He's just an incredibly powerful machine."
"But he was so..."
"I know, sweetheart. It's got to be rough."
"What are you going to do with him?" Zane asked.
"Take a wild guess." Hamegg replied evilly. Trashcan whimpered behind the group. (Y/N), on the other hand, did the opposite of whimper.
"You're not putting him in your stupid tournament!" She said strongly as stood in between Astro and Hamegg.
"Oh my go- he's a robot, (Y/N)! A machine! Machine's do what they're told. They're mindless, senseless... things, that do anything their creator tells them."
"And what about me?"
"What about you?"
"You created my robotic parts. These limbs here, they're not human, am I mindless? Am I senseless?"
"No, you're not. But I did make those parts, I got you back on your feet, so that makes me your creator. So you'll do what I say, or so help me, I will destroy those parts the first chance I get so you'll be crawling everywhere like the freak you are." Hamegg said lowly as he got closer to (Y/N)'s face. (Y/N) didn't flinch, although, she was silenced. Hamegg switched facial expressions in a matter of seconds.
"Let's get on with the show, shall we?" He asked joyfully.
----------------------------------------------------------
"Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, and all you riff-raff who snuck in without buying a ticket, allow me to present Astro Boy!" Hamegg called out, his voice echoed through speakers around the arena. Walls were brought down in the centre of the arena to reveal a confused Astro. "I know, I know. You're wondering what a nice looking kid like that is doing in a place like this. That ain't no kid, folks. That's a robot. From Metro City! Get this, folks. Astro personally told me he doesn't think much of our fighting robots." The giant crowd boo'd. "Thinks they're all a bunch of sissies! Thinks you're all trailer park trash!"
"He didn't say that." Widget commented from the stand with the other kids.
"He didn't say he was a robot, either." Cora replied annoyed.
"This is what we've all been waiting for, a fight between the Surface and Metro City. Let's get it on!" Hamegg exclaimed before doors on the side of the arena opened to reveal a ninja-like robot with spinning circular blades as hands.
"I'm not fighting." Astro declared. The larger robot swung it's blades at Astro. The boy dodged them by using his rocket feet to jump into the sky. This made his friends pay more attention. "I'm not doing this." Astro announced before flying up to escape. He hit a forcefield that covered the top of the arena. He was electrocuted before he fell down and slammed onto the ground. Hamegg smirked while the kids watched in destress, especially (Y/N). Astro dodged more of the other robots attacks and brought him up to the forcefield. His head span around until it exploded and Astro threw the limp robot to the ground. Every cheered as he lowered himself down.
"Bring out the Little Stinker!" Hamegg commanded. A small pink and green robot walked through the doors.
"Will you play with us?" It asked Astro.
"Us?" Astro questioned the single robot.
"Yes, us." The robot replied in a high pitch voice before separating into two different robots. A short one that had guns as their hands and tall one that used it's hands to pummel it's opponent. Astro dodged the hits and bullets as he flew around the arena. He hid behind the tall robot then tapped it's shoulder.
"Hey fella." The robot jumped and tried to hit Astro but crushed the shorter robot instead. Astro used the crushed robot to shoot the other.
"I have a boo-boo!" The Little Stinker yelled. Hamegg growled as Astro chucked the small robot away.
"Get him! Get him! Get him! Get him! Get him!" He yelled as all the doors around the walls of the arena opened to release other different kinds of robots. Astro prepared himself for the incoming attacks. He was interrupted by the three robots he met earlier.
"Stay back!" The light bluish green one said.
"What are you-" Astro began.
"We've got a feather, and we're not afraid to use it." He challenged. The feather he held was burned down to a crisp by one of the other robots. "Oh! I have spoken in haste." The three of them were kicked up into the air. The crowd cheered as Astro continued to fight all the robots. The trio fell back down. "Why fight, brothers?" The same one asked. "A great robot once said- ah! Me schnoz!" He exclaimed as he was punched in the face.
Astro eventually destroyed all the robots before slowly rising into the air panting. The crowd stood and cheered. Astro smiled over to his friends who cheered as well. Cora sat with a small frown. Astro's smile fell but rose back when he noticed (Y/N) was clapping for him. It seemed like (Y/N) didn't care at all if he was a robot or not, and that made him feel a little more normal.
