Chapter 3: Secrets

Astro walked outside to find Zog asleep. "Good night, Zog." Trashcan then came zooming past with a wrench. "Hey Trashcan. You wanna play?" Astro asked as the robotic dog dropped the wrench at the boys feet. "Fetch!" Astro said as he threw the wrench what seemed like miles away. "Oops." He smiled nervously to the dog before Trashcan ran after his metal toy. Astro looked up to the floating island of Metro City.

"Hello?" Cora asked. Astro looked to his right to see Cora sitting in the car with the door open. (Y/N) accompanied her by sitting on the roof of the car. "Hello?" Cora asked again. Astro walked over and saw Cora holding what seemed like a phone to her ear. "Hello?" She asked one more time.

"Hello?" Astro asked, startling both Cora and (Y/N). Cora gasped before she jumped up and tripped on a pile junk parts.

"Hey, didn't your nanny-bots tell you it's rude to sneak up on people?" Cora snarled.

"How's your head?" Astro asked in slight concern.

"Well, it's still on." Cora replied as she sat back down.

"Yeah? Let's check." (Y/N) suggested as she rubbed Cora's head, causing Cora to laugh.

"You know, they say that sometimes when it's really clear, like tonight, you can still call through to Metro City." Cora informed the boy as he sat down on the car.

"You wanna call Metro City?" He asked shocked. Cora looked at him a little nervously before (Y/N) covered for her.

"Yeah, what? You've never made a prank call before?" She said quickly.

"The only thing is I can't get this stupid phone to work." Cora complained as she threw the phone into the air. Astro caught it.

"Let me try." He suggested.

"Knock yourself out. But be warned, not even (Y/N) was able to fix it." Cora said, not thinking he can do it.

"Eh, you never know. He could pull a trick out of nowhere and be able to get a-" (Y/N) started before Astro interrupted.

"There's a signal, weak but it's there." Astro interrupted.

"Hey, the kid has hidden talents." Cora complimented.

"Not bad." (Y/N) said, impressed. Astro smiled to the both of them.

"You guys have no idea." He added. Cora called a number and stood up and walked around a little with the phone to her ear.

"Come on, somebody, pick up. Please, pick up. It's me, Cora... I miss you guys." She hung up then sat back down.

"Are you okay?" Astro asked.

"Sometimes I wonder if they've even noticed I've gone." Cora said sadly.

"Who?" Astro pushed on. (Y/N) rested her metal hand gently on Cora's shoulder from her spot on the roof of the car.

"My parents." Cora whispered.

"Your... your parents?" Astro asked shocked. He thought they were all orphans.

"That's right. Now you know the truth about me. Only you and (Y/N). Well what are you waiting for? Go tell Zane and the others that Cora's from Metro City and that she's still trying to call home." She said as she sat on the hood of the car.

"Don't forget the part about you being raised by nanny-bots." Astro added. Cora scoffed and laughed. "Everybody's got secrets." He said as he join the two girls on top of the car. "I wouldn't tell. You can trust me, Cora. Both of you can." He said while looking at (Y/N).

"I know. You're a good guy Astro." Cora complimented. "How about you, (Y/N)? Wanna tell the new guy your secret?" She asked fully knowing what it would be.

"Not much of a secret, more like a story." (Y/N) started. Astro immediately became intrigued. Maybe she would explain how she lost one arm and one leg. "I lost my leg first, a while ago, which is why it keeps falling apart." The others laughed. "But it happened when I was around... six? Seven? I was playing in an old abandoned house with a few other kids. Then for some reason, the house caught on fire, we think it was some older orphans playing a sick joke. We all ran out but one kid, who was younger than the rest of us, got so scared that they froze. I panicked and ran towards them and pushed them out the door. Pieces of metal and wood fell on my leg, some piercing straight into my skin, had to get it amputated. Others kids helped me out before the whole house fell down."

"I'm so sorry." Astro said. (Y/N) waved her hand at him.

"It wasn't anyone's fault, well, anyone we know." She admitted.

"What about your arm?" Astro pressed on.

"...I'll tell you that one later." (Y/N) promised with a smile. Astro nodded.

"Can... Can I tell you guys something? My secret?" He asked.

"Sure, that's what friends are for, right?" Cora assured as (Y/N) scooted closer.

"Do you ever feel like you just don't fit in, like you're different to everyone else, kind of an outsider?" Astro asked sadly.

"Of course, everyone feels like that sometimes. Especially Miss Metal over here." Cora laughed, causing (Y/N) to lightly smack her across the back of the head in a joking way.

"Well, the last few days have been different for me. I mean, being with all you guys and Hamegg. The thing I need to tell you is, I'm a... I'm kind of a r- I'm a..."

"Yeah?" Cora sat up.

"I'm... r-r-really starting to like it here with you," He covered his stuttering and looked to (Y/N) when saying' you'. He noticed he was staring and continued. "...with you guys."

"Yeah? Well, we like you too, Astro." (Y/N) complimented as Cora nodded. They heard panting and looked over to the ground.

"Hey, Trashcan." Cora greeted the robotic dog. Trashcan dropped his wrench and fell to the ground in exhaustion. The three kids laughed.

"I know it's not the same thing but isn't Hamegg sort of like our dad now?" Astro asked.

"Yeah, I guess." Cora agreed as the three of them laid back down on top of the car and looked at the stars that surrounded Metro City.
