Chapter 22: Journey To Recovery
A/N
TW: Detailed descriptions of injuries
The first couple weeks went by slowly. Painfully slow.
Where (Y/N)'s left leg was connected, it constantly ached and occasionally bled. The aching luckily faded every day, but flamed up every now and then, especially when it was accidentally bumped or leaned on. (Y/N) failed to cover up the painful aches. Mainly because Astro could physically see the inflammation and bleeding. (Y/N) could never escape his firmness whenever he told her to rest.
~
There was visible improvement when the third and forth week rolled around. The aching had mostly faded, but (Y/N)'s wound was still sensitive. Astro was strict on her not putting any pressure on her leg until Dr. Tenma allowed it.
The bleeding had stopped, only old dried blood was visible, and was cleaned carefully by Dr. Tenma.
Bruises around the thigh had become quite purple and blue, but fortunately, not very painful.
~
The fifth and sixth week were clear signs of a speedy recovery. (Y/N) begged Dr. Tenma to allow her to practice walking, but the scientist reckoned it was best to wait till the end of the sixth week.
She asked every day, as every day she improved even more. The bruising was practically gone, the aching had pretty much vanished, and not to mention the boredom was making her crazy! But Tenma convinced her to wait. The last thing any of them wanted was to delay the process even more.
~
It was the end of the sixth week, last day of the week, and (Y/N) was fully healed. She was hanging out with Astro in their room as they discussed who was the winner of their bet.
"It's the end of week 6, so we're still in week 6." (Y/N) explained.
"Week 6 is ending, which means week 7 is starting. You just don't like losing." Astro crossed his arms with a smug expression.
"Of course I don't like losing! Who likes to lose?" (Y/N) exasperated with furrowed eyebrows.
"I wish you did because you just lost." Astro poked her shoulder.
"You're funny. Hope you have a fantastic date planned because I know Orrin will agree with me."
"And Dad will agree with me."
"He's your dad, of course he'll agree with you!"
Tenma shook his head as he overheard the bickering from the kitchen.

Later that day, (Y/N) was preparing to finally take her first step, using a walker, of course. And the help of Astro and Dr. Tenma.
She sat on the edge of Astro's bed and took a deep breath. A stabilised walker was placed in front of her, with Astro and Tenma on either side. She was nervous. She had waited so long and the moment was finally here. So why was she nervous?
(Y/N) ignored the negative thoughts and gripped the sides of the walker tightly. She struggled to push herself up as her arms haven't been fully used in a while, which was yet another thing she had to gain back, her arm strength.
Once she was fully up, she took a quick breath and felt her left foot on the ground. The technology was mind blowing. It wasn't even her real foot, yet she felt every fibre of the carpet underneath her feet.
The pressure was light at first. It slightly hurt, mostly due to how weak her body had become. Even then, (Y/N) pushed through and took the first step with her left leg as Astro kept his hands gently on her side, with Bill Tenma on the other. They weren't necessarily helping, just being prepared in case help was needed.
(Y/N) placed her right foot forward and gasped. She did it! On the first try! Excited, she tried to take another but Tenma stopped her.
"I saw how the first one hurt you. Let's take a break." He smiled encouragingly.
(Y/N) was annoyed, but she understood. With Astro's help, she sat back onto her bed as Tenma left. Astro sat next to her.
"I just want to walk again... All this resting is so boring!" (Y/N) exclaimed.
"I know, but you heard Dad! We'll try again later today. That's good, right?" Astro pointed out, an attempt to make (Y/N) more optimistic.
"I guess so." She somewhat agreed. She tried to look on the bright side, she really did. But after 6 weeks of basically not moving, as well as all the resting she did after her arm surgery, she was completely over doing nothing. It made her fidgety and antsy. Astro saw this build up over time, and was annoyed that he could do nothing about it besides from being there for (Y/N). But (Y/N) appreciated that more than anything. And she often reminded him of that.
Astro hugged her with one arm and pulled her close, as (Y/N) leaned her head on his shoulder and sighed. Astro hugged her tighter and placed a gentle kiss on the top of her head.

The seventh week was ending and (Y/N) had been training every chance she got. Each step she took felt like a new mile stone, and she got more and more excited after each one.
This time, (Y/N) was slowly picking up her pace as Astro and Dr. Tenma watched from the side of the room. Each step was slightly faster than the last, and the expression of pain was nowhere near as prominent as it previously was.
She concentrated and watched her feet move forward. Recently, she had been able to move her robotic toes, and gained feeling throughout her entire left leg. It was as if it was her own leg that's always been apart of her. It felt barely different to her real one. The only difference was that this new prosthetic hadn't been used enough, so it was weak. But slowly, (Y/N) was changing that.
She walked all the way across the room, from the bed to the window, and back to sit down. Astro knelt in front of her as he cheered.
"That was so good, (Y/N)!" He held her hands lovingly.
"It was. So good that it looks like," Tenma paused, "you could start standing without the walker." He concluded. (Y/N) eyes widened.
"I'm gonna walk again?" She asked softly, as if she never believed it until just now. Bill Tenma nodded with a smile. (Y/N) was close to crying at that moment. "...Thank you." She expressed her gratitude. For everything, really. The prosthetics, the care, allowing her to stay in their home. Yes, everything. She couldn't thank him and Astro enough. And Orrin, of course.
"Any time." Dr. Tenma backed out of the room for the young couple to talk by themselves.
