Trust
"I can't believe we're actually in the Grand Canyon!" Tim yelled looking out over the cliff.
The four boys were in the Grand Canyon, Bruce was advertising something for Wayne Enterprises in Arizona, and so he dropped the boys(literally dropped them, out of the Batplane) off at the Grand Canyon, for 'training'. He wanted them to live here for a few days.
"I've always wanted to go here!" Tim shouted,"Yahoo!"
"Dude, we live with a billionaire.. why didn't you just ask to come here," Jason took out a gun from his backpack.
"Why did you pack a gun?!" Dick panicked.
"Cause, we're living here for a few days? We need to hunt!" Jason answered.
"There is a reason I packed food for us." Dick rolled his eyes.
"Don't roll your eyes Grayson, it's very unbecoming." Damian growled.
"What? Says the assassin." Tim smirked.
Damian pushed Tim over the edge,"Aaaggghhh!"
"Damian," scolded Dick,"Don't."
Jason looked like he remembered something and he started laughing,"Haha, poor Tim!"
"Ouch!" Tim climbed over the edge,"Seriously?"
"Glad to have you back. You use your grappling hook?" Dick asked.
"How did you know?" Tim lifted his eyebrow.
"Dude! The first thing Batman taught us?" Jason told him.
"Oh yeah, never leave you're utility belt behind or something, right?" Tim pulled himself up from the ledge.
"Yeah, which is how we know you had your grappling hook, so it makes it okay to push people of ledges." Damian crossed his arms.
"Hehe.. okay to shoot people to right?" Jason shoved his brother.
"Okay guys, let's get to the bottom of the canyon!" Dick ushered them to the ledge, ignoring the bickering his to brothers were doing.
"Do we have to walk down?" Damian complained.
"Nope," Dick jumped off the ledge,"Jumping works fine!"
Jason smirked and jumped after his brother.
Damian rushed and jumped off too.
"Seriously?" Tim asked to nobody in particular,"I just got pushed down!"
But he jumped down to anyway.
------------
The boys sat and looked at the sunset, they were at the bottom of the canyon, and camp was set up already.
Jason was the first to speak,"Isn't it pretty?"
Tim looked at his brother surprised,"Yeah, it sure is."
"Want me to take a picture?" Dick pulled out a camera.
"Yeah," Jason smiled,"Thanks."
"Should we send it to Father?" Damian asked.
"Why should we?" Tim laid his head back onto his pillow.
"I dunno." Damian shrugged and laid his head back next to Tim's.
"Maybe we will," Dick said,"I'll send him the picture of you and Tim agreeing on something!"
"What?!" Tim shot up.
"Hehe, he was joking!" Jason chuckled.
"Yeah right!" Tim smiled.
Dick rolled his eyes at his brothers,"Be quiet or you'll wake the kid!"
Tim and Jason turned to see Damian asleep.
Dick got up and walked to Damian. He pulled out a blanket and wrapped it around the small boy's frame,"Sleep tight Dami!" he whispered.
Tim and Jason smiled, looking at their big brother, their calm and caring leader. It was hard to believe he had been through so much pain.
Dick got up after staring at the little child,"You guys should get some sleep, too."
Tim nodded,"You don't have to tell me twice." he thumped back onto his pillow and was out.
Dick pulled out another blanket and gently place it around Tim,"Love you Timmy."
Jason stared at his brother, who was gently putting away the remains of their dinner, and tidying up camp, getting ready for the next day. Dick turned around,"You should probably get some sleep for tomorrow."
"I was about to tell you the same thing."
"I'm cleaning up camp, so when they wake up, we will be ready to travel down the canyon, also I am getting the map ready, so we know where to go."
"You're really prepared."
"I had a great teacher."
"Had?"
"Yeah, had."
"Isn't he still your mentor?"
"Yeah."
"Then why had?"
"Because I remember the day I quit as Robin."
"I took over for you though."
"Yeah."
"There a problem with that?"
"He replaced me."
"He didn't replace you!"
"He doesn't love me that much anymore."
"He loves you!"
"Right.."
"Why else would he still keep your old suit?"
"He has it?"
"Yeah! Why else would he let your legacy as Robin live on?"
"I don't know?"
"Exactly! Dick, Bruce will always love you."
"Hmm.."
"You were his first son."
"Yeah I guess, now you should probably go to sleep."
"Dick.."
"What?"
"I.."
"Are you going to go to sleep or what?"
"You're staying up? Aren't you?"
"Yes..."
"Dick, that's not healthy."
"I can't sleep!"
"Why can't you sleep?"
"Cause I don't want to wake you guys up cause I'm screaming."
"Screaming, wait why?"
"Night terrors."
"Wait what?"
"I have them when I'm.. I don't know, when I don't feel safe?"
"Why?"
"Dunno, I can't feel safety with me, and then I go..."
"What do you have night terrors about?"
"Many things..."
"Expand?"
"Yeah, me failing to protect my parents when they died, Bruce rejecting me, watching Wally run to his death. You guys dying."
"Ouch."
"Yeah, now go to sleep."
"Not if you aren't."
"Do you want me to wake Timmy and Dami?"
"We are here for you Dick! I'm sure they won't mind!"
"Yuh huh."
"What are you two chittering about?" Damian asked, waking up from his sleep,"Why aren't you in bed?"
"We were talking Dami... now go back to bed, you need to rest for tomorrow." Dick appeared at his side.
"I can't, I was having a nightmare!" Damian cried.
"About what?" Dick asked.
"Personal stuff. It's none of your business." Damian looked away.
"Sometimes it helps to talk about it." Jason said.
"Fine.." Damian put his head down,"It was about you guys dying and I..I.."
"What?" Tim appeared out of nowhere, freaking out all three of his brothers, so he explained, "I was having a nightmare, so I woke up, then I heard the word die!"
"Damian was explaining his nightmare." Jason said.
"Oh.." Tim solemnly opened his mouth into an 'O' shape.
"It was of you guys dying. I was standing on a ledge. And you guys were hanging over the ledge by a rope. Someone beside me was telling me to cut the rope. So I did, and you guys fell and died." Damian glared.
"What?!" Dick backed away.
"I would never hurt you though!" Damian cried, holding Dick's hand,"I can't lose you guys." with that he pulled Dick into him,"I can't lose anybody!"
"I know how you feel buddy," Dick rubbed the boy's back,"Timmy?"
"My nightmare?" Tim asked.
"Yeah." Jason confirmed.
"It was of me, and you three. I was there, on a boat with a bunch of villains, they had us captive, but they let me go, telling me to watch you guys die. So they killed you guys one by one, but I didn't do anything!" Tim yelped.
"It's okay, we know you would save us." Dick told him, rocking Damian who was asleep in his arms.
Tim smiled,"Thanks." then he to drifted off.
"How did you do that?" Jason looked at the two sleeping boys,"You comforted them."
"I'm their older brother, it's my job!" Dick said.
"But how did you get the practice to do that?" Jason asked.
"From you mostly.." Dick smiled,"When you were younger."
"Seriously?"
"Yep."
"Wow."
"Now you should seriously get some sleep." Dick reminded.
"Fine. But it's not healthy for you to stay up so late!" Jason glared and laid down on his mat and fell asleep.
Dick smiled at his brother then put Damian back on his mat, covering him in a blanket, and did the same to Timmy. The night was cold so he brought out his blanket and wrapped it around his shoulders and started to finish wrapping up camp.
He looked at Jason, who was shivering on his mat. Dick sighed and went to Jason's backpack, hoping that he had packed a blanket. Nope. All guns, seriously? What went on in that boys mind? Dick removed the blanket from around his shoulders and put it on Jason's strong frame.
Dick sat and looked at his map, planning where they would go next. There or maybe there? He yawned and took out a flashlight, flashing the small light around the map.
Suddenly Jason shot up, breathing hard,"Dick?"
"Yeah?" Dick was at his side in an instant.
"I.. okay.. I should... be good.. you're good.. Dami?.. Timmy?.. wait.. what..?" Jason breathed.
"Wait! What's wrong?" Dick shook him.
"I dreamed that we were here, and I woke up, and the camp was abandoned and you guys were laying dead around me!" Jason shook.
"Why does that scare you?" Dick raised an eyebrow.
"Why wouldn't it? You guys are my brothers!" Jason yelped at him.
Damian got up and sat in Dick's lap,"Nightmare?"
"Yep, look at his face, looks like it!" Tim appeared next to Damian.
"At this point, we will never go to sleep!" Dick shook his head,"Why don't we just travel at night?"
"Yeah!" Damian and Tim yelled,"Let's go!"
Dick rolled his eyes and picked up his backpack,"Good thing I packed up already!"
"Yay!" Damian and Tim rushed after their brother,"Come on Jay!"
---------------
The next few days were a blur.
They traveled at night, and slept by day.
They ate, rationing their food between them.
Water almost ran out, and they were forced to drink from a running dry river.
Their was no connection.
And this training experience must be the most cruel one they had ever experienced.
--------------
The sun started to set.
"Damian?" Tim asked,"Is today the last day?"
"Yes." Damian answered.
"We should probably start walking up." Jason suggested.
"Who said anything about walking?" Dick smiled mischievously.
"Hm?" Damian asked.
"He means our grappling hooks dumdum!" Tim brought his out.
"Grappling gun!" Jason said,"Not hook!"
"Your the one with the gun! We have hooks!" Dick retorted.
"Yeah," Damian glared,"Gun boy!"
"Hehe.. what type of comeback was that?" Tim asked.
"A good one." Jason said.
"How was it good?" Dick asked,"It was aimed at you!"
"Oh," Jason glared,"In that case... Damian!"
"Should we get some sleep?" Tim asked."When we wake up, we can head up!"
"Okay! Fine with me," Damian said, looking at the setting sun,"I need sleep."
Tim and Damian fell to the ground and started to sleep.
"Wow, it amazes me how fast they can go to sleep!" Dick smiled.
"Yeah, I'm going to take a nap too," Jason said,"You should to!"
"Nah," Dick said,"I'll get ready for tomorrow."
"Dude!" Jason glared,"You haven't slept in five days!"
"Whatever," Dick said,"I'm training to be like Batman right? So I've got to stay up!"
"It's not healthy!" Jason yelped.
Dick shrugged and Jason drifted off.
--------
"So how was it boys?" Bruce asked his kids.
"Wonderful Father! I loved the sunset, but water was very scarce!" Damian said,"Next time you should come with us!"
"Yeah, Tim how was it?" Bruce turned to his child.
"Great! I loved all the exercise!" Tim pumped his muscle.
Bruce laughed,"I see the difference! What about you Dick?"
"It was great! Lovely survival challenge you put us up to!" Dick joked.
"Your welcome! I knew you could handle it! Jason?" Bruce asked.
"Dick didn't sleep for the whole time." Jason tattled.
"Oh shut up!" Dick snapped.
"Dick..." Bruce looked at his son.
"What?" Dick asked.
"I thought this stopped when you were thirteen, how long has this been happening?" Bruce narrowed his eyes.
"Bruce, it hasn't stopped, and you know that! It was just worse when I was thirteen!" Dick cried.
"Dick this is not healthy!" Bruce yelled.
"I know." Dick said.
"Then why do you-?" Bruce was cut off.
"You know why!" Dick snapped.
"I'm sorry." Bruce softly said.
Dick sighed,"It's okay."
"You know why I sent you here?" Bruce asked the boys.
"Why?" Tim asked, raising his eyebrows.
"Trust exercise," Bruce nodded his head,"Did it work?"
"Halfway!" Damian said.
"Yeah!" Tim said.
"Seems," Jason said,"We all trusted each other with our nightmares, and comforted each other. I think it worked."
"Good. Dick?" Bruce turned to his son,"Do you trust your brothers?"
"Yes I do," Dick said,"I just didn't want them to see.. well you know."
"Dick, it's a night terror! It won't hurt anybody!" Bruce yelled.
"Remember the time I hit you with a knife in my night terror?" Dick lowered his eyes down,"I can't risk it."
Bruce sighed,"I see, you trust us, but you don't trust yourself!"
"Yeah." Dick sighed.
"Hey! It's okay!" Damian said,"Remember our nightmares? We don't trust ourselves either!"
"Hehe.. glad we're in the same boat!" Tim said.
"Yeah, thought I was the only one till that night!" Jason said.
Dick smiled,"I'm not the only one!"
"No, see why I did this?" Bruce wrapped his arm around his son.
"Thanks." Dick smiled.
The boys wrapped themselves into one big hug, knowing now what trust really was. And they were really glad they were in the same boat.
A/N: Sorry, this chapter was really bad!
