Avoiding Him
A/N: It may not sound like it but this is a Robins! story. Trust me. Also in this story, Gar and Bart are Damian's best friends.
9 Years Ago in a crime filled town named Gotham City, a 11 year old boy and his two best crime fighting friends were taking a stroll through the park.
"Come on Wally!" Dick Grayson shouted happily, running to a tree,"I think Roy got stuck!"
"I did not get stuck! I'm purposely hanging upside-down." Roy Harper, 15, was hanging upside-down by his foot in the crook of the trees branches, a scowl crossing his normally glaring face. Not much of an improvement honestly.
"Ah... did the little archer get stuck?" Wally West, 13, asked, circling Roy's head and poking his nose.
"Oh just get me down you big baby!" Roy yelped, as Wally swung him around like a pendulum.
"I think we should just leave him, huh Walls?" Dick suggested nodding his head to the teenager.
"Oh yeah." Wally smiled, and snapped a picture of a surprised Roy.
"I hate my life!" Roy groaned, covering his eyes.
Dick and Wally grinned as they pulled their best friend down,"We love you too."
And anyone in the park that day, could see an extremely special bond that was shared between the three.
1 year ago in his Bludhaven headquarters a 19 year old and a 23 year old looked forlornly at a picture of two gingers and an ebony haired kid, wondering what would happen to their best friend after being disintegrated in a wormhole
"I miss the good old days." Roy Harper pushed his fingers through his messy orange hair,"I really hope that Wally is alive."
"I think he is." Dick said back, pulling off his Nightwing mask to reveal his icey blue eyes.
Roy sighed and also took his off, revealing his much more handsome and darker blue's,"We only have hope to go on Dickie bird, but I've got a lot of it."
"I hope he comes back Roy, I really hope he does." the dispirited child dropped himself to the couch and placed his hands over his eyes.
"He will. I have faith." Roy added, sniffing small tears from his eyes.
From his place in the Batcave, Alfred turned off the secret camera he used to spy on his kind of not really grandchild in his Bludhaven headquarters. Alfred sighed, knowing that he shouldn't be intruding on such a precious and sad moment between best friends.
On the ruins of Mount Justice, a 20 year old and 24 year old stood together in their civvies and waited patiently for any show of life.
"I had this odd feeling Wally would just show up here." Dick said, looking at his phone for the time.
"Me too." Roy added, dropping himself on the ruins of the once grand mountain.
"Yeah, well maybe we're just so blind-sighted by his death... he's dead Roy, we need to face it." Dick said trying to control the tears welling in his eyes that many girls mooned over.
Roy shot up,"WHAT?! You can't say that! Dick, you've never given up! Look, Wally is our best friend, and I'm not gonna refuse to give up on him! If you're gonna give up on him why don't you just leave!"
"NEVER!" Dick shouted with more force than he anticipated.
Suddenly there was a gust of wind and someone appeared before their eyes.
"Wally?!"
And anyone near living to the once grand mountain looked in wonder at the strange sight of three boys hugging each other tightly and never letting go, and they knew. This was no ordinary friendship.
Current time, Wayne Manor, a 20 year old was hanging out with his two very best friends, just like he had, years and years and years ago. In another room, a small very grumpy 12 year old was talking his friends Bart and Gar. And this is where our story begins.
Damian stared madly out the window, trying to ignore Bart's chatter and Garth's retorts.
"Hey Damian?" Gar suddenly said, munching on a banana,"Why do you look so mad?"
"I mean, you look mad all the time but now you look even more mad!" Bart added, speeding over to the window seat Damian was sitting in.
"Please don't use your powers by the window. It might reveal that the Wayne's know superheroes and we might be discovered as the legendary Batfamily." Damian replied calmly, keeping the oh-so-obvious anger out of his voice.
"Oh come one Dami! We know somethings wrong!" Gar replied, fingering a photo on Damian's it's-not-even-funny-this-desk-is-so-clean counter.
"Please do not refer to me as Dami, that term of endearment is only reserved for my brothers." Damian replied, still seething about unknown problems.
Bart gulped at the hurtful rejecting words, but tried to lighten the conversation by a small joke,"So that means we're not special enough to call you Dami?"
"Yeah, we have to earn it?" Gar caught on quickly, and rubbed his fingers to his scalp.
Damian sighed, knowing his friends all to well to cave in, but he felt a little bad for making them feel not wanted after all they had done for him. They saved his life after all(A/N: If you like me writing about Gar, Bart, and Damian I will make a little story about how they became best friends, but only if someone comments and tells me this is a good idea or a bad one and I shouldn't do it). Damian sighed with frustration and decided it wouldn't hurt to tell some stuff to his friends, but not to much because they were big blabbermouths,"I'm sorry guys. It's just that Dami is something Grayson usually calls me, I mean Father and Pennyworth and maybe sometimes Cain call me it, but Grayson takes absurd pleasure in giving me nicknames. And he's not hanging with me as much as he used too. And I just miss him calling me it I guess. You can call me it I guess. I'm sorry I snapped at you two."
"Oh..." Bart replied sort of stupidly then said,"Well 1. Gar and I'll come up with a crafty nickname for you. And 2. You should talk to your brother about why he's not hanging out with you."
"Yeah, definitely. If Dick is avoiding you, you should tell him what you think because Dick is probably just might lose all his time for you." Gar pointed out, leaning his head back on his pillow.
Damian's mad gaze softened,"Thanks, Allen, thanks, Logan. It means a lot."
"Anything to help the Boy Wonder actually feel!" Bart remarked, grabbing a bag of chips.
"Oh shut up!" Damian was back to Damian.
Gar and Bart gulped, and Gar laughed,"Well it was nice hanging with you guys, even though half the time Damian, you were just glaring at air, but I'm afraid I've got to get back to Megan or she'll start to worry about where I am, who I was hanging with, why I was gone, what I was doing, when did I leave, and how did I leave the house without her knowing."
"Oh boy. Well I've gotta go with you. Jaime said he would take me to see a movie." Bart said, referring to the current blue beetle and his best friend, his third one.
"It's a bummer Reyes wasn't able to come with us today." Gar said as he walked to the door.
"Well he'll have to come next time. He wouldn't want to miss out on any more evil pranking plans!" Damian said with delight as he waved goodbye.
Once the two were gone, Damian turned around and practically bumped into Cassie Cain.
"Move out Cain!" he grumbled, trying to shove her out of the way.
"YOU move you little dumb watt!" Cass said grumpily staring at the popcorn that was scattered across the floor.
"Ah, did your popcorn fall?" Damian asked in mock seriousness.
"Yeah it did, so move you little movie ruiner!" Cass growled, shoving the little pre-teen out of her way in reasonable anger because if Damian hadn't bumped her she wouldn't missed her binge watching different shows. Or the live stream TV.
Damian growled and made his way upstairs, where he was practically bowled over by Tim Drake.
"Clear out! It's homework time!" Tim shouted in a load voice as he rushed downstairs.
Damian rolled his eyes and walked past Jason Todd, who was currently conversing with Bruce Wayne.
"Hey Damian." Bruce said,"If you're looking for Dick, he's in his room."
Damian nodded his thanks and walked up to Dick's bedroom door, where he paused before knocking.
Laughter drifted from the room.
Why hadn't Dick been spending as much time with Damian? Well because Wally just got back from a parallel universe and those two would not stop hanging out with Roy. It made Damian a little jealous.
Damian's hand dropped and he stared at the door for about like 5 whole minuted before mustering the remainder of his courage and turning to knock on the door.
What if Dick rejected him and turned back to his friends?
Knock
What if no-one understood the point he was trying to get across?
Knock
Would Dick hate him?
Knock
"I know it's you Dami, you can come in!" the laughter stopped and the familiar voice of his oldest sibling floated through the air and through the door, creating a slightly muffled voice.
Damian stepped through the threshold of the door and looked to see Dick's normal room, consisting of pictures and memories and constant reminders of his past and his future. The three most important pictures on his bed side stand. And Roy was sitting on the bed, Dick was sitting on the desk chair, and Wally was laying one the ground.
"Is that who I think it is? Dami! Bring it in!" Wally stood up and held his arms out in a hug gesture.
Damian awkwardly leaned into it as Wally West tried his hand at crushing the 12 year old's bones.
"I think Damian doesn't like your hug Walls!" Roy chuckled, seeing the obvious uncomfortable on the pre-teen.
"Um...." Damian shifted uncomfortably, for once at a loss of for what to say.
"Damian, you would like to talk?" Dick asked, kindly.
Damian nodded.
"Hey we understand bud. We know what this is about, we'll leave!" Roy said, pulling Wally along with him,"Enjoy explaining Dick! See you tomorrow?"
"Maybe, after this conversation we'll see!" Dick responded, waving away his friends.
"How did you know what was bothering me?" Damian asked.
"Well we just knew." Dick remarked, then continued,"Look don't feel bad about this. Just because I'm spending a tad less time with you doesn't mean I don't love you. It's just that, before you were even born... wait, no, a year after you were born, Roy and Wally and I became the best best best of friends. We've been with each other for as long as I can imagine. They've helped me through dark times, so when I almost lost both of them, I panicked. But when I got Wally back, it was so relieving. I just needed to spend time with both of them just to make sure I didn't lose them again, just to make sure that I was still on good terms with them. So before one of us leaves this Earth, I'll still have them with me the day before. I'm sorry Dami, forgive me?"
"That was a fast explanation!" Damian said, hugging Dick tightly,"I'm sorry for being so selfish, and I know what you're talking about. Just save some time for you family too, okay?"
Dick nodded and sniffed a tear away."Thanks."
"Thanks back."
And the grumpy pre-teen left happy, knowing that he wasn't hated. But loved.
