chapter nine
Wanda's POV
The heroes were coming to us, so we had the home field advantage. Knowing this gave me a burst of confidence as I strolled into the conference room, slamming the doors open and startling those inside. My eyes immediately found Queen Bee's and she smiled at me, looking over my new outfit. "Love the look, my child. Are you ready to take down those pesky brats once and for all?"
I nodded, taking a seat at the table and kicking my feet up onto the surface of the mahogany. "Of course my queen, I was born for this."
I felt a warmth spread through my body starting at the back of my neck before Queen Bee spoke her next words. "Your primary job is to protect the lab on the lower floor. Leave the fighting to us unless the heroes approach you, got it?" I nodded once more, feeling tingles shoot through out my limbs. "Good, well, you better get down there."
Standing up from the chair, I made my way to the elevator and pressed the button for the lowest level. Once the doors were closed, I used some of my magic to make the elevator go faster, sending me to my destination at an accelerating pace. At the bottom level, I stepped out into the corridor and proceeded to take up position by the front entrance to the Light's personal lab at Lex Corp. Using my magic, I reached out telepathically to watch through Queen Bee's eyes the happenings of the floors above me.
Lex Luthor stood by the window overlooking the city, his hands behind his back as he spoke to the room. "Is it wise to leave the child by herself?"
I felt Queen Bee's eyes narrow as she glared at the bald man. "Are you questioning my decision, Lex?"
Lex shook his head. "I am merely playing devil's advocate, my Queen. We should prepare ourselves, the heroes should be here any moment."
And as if on cue, the windows shattered and in flew Miss Martian telekinetically carrying the rest of my old team. They exchanged glances before nodding, a flash of silver heading out the door as another flash of red yellow swam in Queen Bee's vision. The Queen was too slow to stop Kid Flash as he ripped the necklace off her neck, sending the beads flying as he held onto the gemstone that was in the middle. "That does not belong to you." He growled, speeding out of the room and out of sight.
"He has the stone, get him!" My Queen screeched, gesturing towards the direction where Kid Flash went running.
"Do not fret, my Queen, we already have what we need." Lex chuckled, watching as his body guard engaged in hand to hand combat with Nightwing.
Curious as to what he meant, I was about to jump from Queen Bee's mind to Lex Luthor's when a sharp pain radiated from the back of my head and everything went black.
Mount Justice, six hours later
I felt my eyes groggily blink themselves open, a pounding immediately taking over my head. With a groan I sat up and tried to rub my temples, only to find my hands restricted to the bedside by what I assume to be power dampening chains. Panic began to spread through out my body as I called out for my brother and team. "Pietro? Dick? Artemis? What's going on?" Moments later the door to the room I was being held in opened and in walked Batman, Zatanna, and Natasha. I narrowed my eyes in confusion, gesturing to my wrists with a nod of my head. "Is this really necessary?"
"Given what you can, and have, done, we believe so." Batman grunted, crossing his arms over his chest. "What do you remember, Wanda?"
I thought back to the past few weeks, starting with when my tattoo was discovered. "I-I remember these dreams...visions, more like, of who I now know to be Queen Bee. She used the mind stone to coerce me into believing my team was out to get me and that I was destined to work for the Light. She must've had Simon tamper with my brain as well."
"Do you remember attacking the team?" Nat asked, taking a seat on the bed next to me. She was the only one I didn't sense fear on and for that I was eternally grateful.
"No...are they okay? What did I do to them?" Batman used the built in holographic computers in his gloves to pull up the video footage of my attack on my team before I escaped the Watchtower. I gasped in horror, tears springing to my eyes. "Are they alright?"
"They're fine." Zatanna said shortly, a bitterness to her voice. I shrank back a little into myself. The magician sighed, apologizing for her attitude. "The Light let you go pretty easily, do you have any idea what they are planning?"
I shook my head. "No, but from what I could gather they probably want to use my powers to alter reality to their whims. But without me, how could they do that?"
"That's what we were hoping you could tell us." Batman sighed impatiently, leaving the room without another word. Zatanna followed him, leaving me alone with Natasha.
I turned to the spy with the tears still leaking out of my eyes. "Nat, I am a monster. I hurt those I care about and I can't even gather intel to make up for it. I shouldn't be on the team, I'm no hero."
Natasha pulled me into a hug, patting the back of my head tenderly. "Little one, you did wonderfully. You were being mind controlled, no one blames you for your actions."
That reminded me of something. "Nat? How did you get me out of the Light's control?"
She smirked. "Pietro hit you really hard on the head. Cognitive recalibration."
I nodded, pulling out of Natasha's embrace. "Do you have the mind stone still?" Nat nodded, a curious look taking over her features. "Can I see it? I want to try something."
"What are you going to do, little one?" She pursed her lips as she waited for an explanation that never came. "Fine, I guess I'll just have to trust you on this one. I'll go get it." Nat got up and walked out, shooting me a look before closing the door.
Taking a deep breath, I focused on clearing my head while I waited for Natasha to return. Luckily, she was back in a moment with the stone in her hand. "Can you place it on my tattoo?" She gave me a wary look but listened to my directions. As soon as the stone touched my skin an immense pain shot throughout my body making me cry out in agony. Nat went to move the stone but I used my telekinesis to keep it place.
The power dampeners on my wrists were strong, but I was stronger.
I grit my teeth as the stone continued to send flashes of white hot pain through my neck and body, tears of pain mixing with the blood that was leaking out of nose due to the exertion of using my powers with dampeners on. I cried out again, this time focusing my magic on the back of neck. I felt the magic mingle with the power of the stone, the pain increasing ten fold. My body was shaking, sweat dripping off my forehead but I paid it no mind.
The door burst open and in ran Pietro, Dick, and M'gann. They took one look at me and immediately tried to intervene. I used a small amount of my energy to put a forcefield around me and Natasha, forcing my friends to stay back so I could complete the task at hand.
With one final burst of energy and magic, I felt my eyes turn completely scarlet as I yelled with all the might left in me. "Begone!" Natasha went flying backwards as energy went flying out of me, tossing her into Pietro and sending them both to the floor. The mind stone clattered out of her hand, energy radiating off of it in waves of red and blue. Crumpling to the bed in an exhausted heap, I looked up as three blurry Dicks came into my view, saying something undecipherable. I shushed them lazily, whispering hoarsely. "Is it...gone? Did...it...work?"
It took the Dicks a few seconds to gather their thoughts but when they did all three of them lifted the hair off the back of my sweaty neck and I heard them collectively gasp. "Oh, my gosh. You did it Wanda. The tattoo is gone."
"Good." I mumbled, my eyes rolling back in my head. I wasn't unconscious, just too weak to keep my eyes open.
"She needs medical attention." I heard Pietro cry from miles away. "She over exerted herself, she might have hemorrhaged her brain."
"And look at her wrists! They're burned up!" M'gann spoke from under water, confusing the heck out of me. Why was she under water?
"M'fine. Let me...sleep." I drawled, wincing when the pounding in my head increased yet again.
I felt a pair of hands on each of my arms, some movement around the cuffs before the pressure released on the dampeners. I hissed as the cool air hit my sensitive skin. "Oh, god. Its worse than I thought. Quick, get her to the medbay!"
I groaned when a pair of arms picked me up and off the bed, speeding out of the room. I recognized them as my brother Pietro's but I was too out of it to say anything. The world was dizzying even with my eyes closed and I felt like I was going to vomit. I heard talking above me but I couldn't focus on the words, I only noticed the movement of being placed down on another service that felt like a hospital bed.
I moaned again when a hand touched my forehead and suddenly a calm washed over me. I heard one word spoken to me and I willingly obeyed its command.
Sleep.
