chapter eight
Pietro's POV
"What are we doing here again?" I asked from my rolling chair in the surveillance room at the Watchtower, twirling around until Artemis grunted and stuck her foot out, making me stumble and fall out of my chair. "Ouch. Rude."
"You were being annoying." She stuck her tongue out, taking her position under Wally's arm once more. "You were saying, Batman?"
I perked up, looking over at the caped crusader as he typed away at the computer pulling up the video feed of my sister's medical room. I held up my hand in a pausing motion, glaring at my cousin's father. "Hold up, why are we spying on my sleeping twin? That's a bit creepy and over steps so many boundaries."
Batman ignored me, rewinding the video feed to before Wanda woke up, pausing the tape to look at me. "Pietro, did you know your sister has a tattoo on the back of her neck?"
"Pfft, what?"
"Its true, Zatanna and Wanda herself have both tried, and failed, to remove the tattoo. We have been running tests on it because of its...unusual properties." Batman cleared his throat, pulling up another window to show the gathered heroes the results. "It appears to be made from alien technology, from the scepter that the Norse demi-god Loki used on Hawkeye when he attacked New York."
"Are you saying my sister has a tattoo that is controlling her mind?" I snorted. "Yeah, alright."
"I'm saying, whoever has the scepter now can potentially control Wanda...and her increasingly strong abilities."
"But The Vision has the stone that was in the scepter and he would never do something like that." I explained slowly, a feeling of dread blossoming in my stomach. "Unless...did something happen to Vision?"
"Afraid so, otherwise he is making Wanda attack us." Dick piped up from the back of the room, nodding at the surveillance tape. "Show him."
Batman played the tape. Wanda blinked her eyes open, noticing me and Dick asleep next to her in the room. She glared at us, her eyes a haunting blue before they glowed scarlet. She summoned a hex bolt, aiming it at our heads before pausing, tilting her head as if she was listening to someone. The hex bolts wilted in her hands and instead she snapped her fingers, making Dick and I wake up in an instant.
I stared at the video, not fully comprehending what I saw. A blast from one of my sister's hex bolts that close would've killed us, Wanda knows that. So why...? I looked to Batman for answers but he was answering a call, his face becoming even more serious if that was possible. Hanging up, he turned and looked me dead in the eye. "The Avengers just found Vision's body...without the stone."
"No. Wanda!" I yelled, speeding from the surveillance room and into my sisters medical room, startling her awake. Wanda's eyes were the same haunting blue as they were before in the video and I shivered looking into them. My sister's face twisted into a sneer, her hand shooting out towards me, throwing me back into the wall. My body glowed with her scarlet energy as she focused her magic on me, pulling my limbs away from my torso and making me cry out in agony. "Sister, please! Stop this."
Wanda cackled as she flew towards me, putting her face inches from me as she hissed in my ear. "Don't you see? I am this."
"No." I whispered hoarsely, feeling as if my limbs would be ripped from my body any second. The door burst open and Wanda was tossed away from me by a blur of red and yellow. I fell to the ground, my limbs numb and feeling as if they were on fire all at once. Looking up I saw Wanda in headlock, Wally struggling to keep his grip on her as she thrashed around. "Don't hurt her, she is still Wanda!"
We need to contain her.
Gasping, I looked up to see the source of the voice in my head was only M'gann and her glowing eyes. Wanda clutched her head briefly before her eyes turned fully scarlet and she let out a guttural shriek, blasting Wally off her back and M'gann into the wall head first with a wave of red energy. Breathing heavily, Wanda's glowing eyes narrowed at the door and I followed her gaze to see the rest of my new team standing there. "You want a piece of me? Come and get it."
"Wanda, this is madness." Kaldur started, lowering his water whips but still having them out and at the ready.
Wanda chuckled, hands turning red with energy. "You want madness? I'll give you madness." The energy shot out of her hands and straight at my teammates, striking them each directly in the head in a steady ray of red. The room became full of shrieks of pure terror as Artemis collapsed to the ground covering her eyes, Dick began to sob loudly, Jason clawed at his arms, Kaldur covered his ears and scrunched his face in pain, and Conner became catatonic.
Smirking at the mental destruction she was causing, my twin clapped her hands gleefully and turned on her heel. "My work here is done. Too-da-loo, brother. We shall meet again." With that she snapped her fingers and was gone.
I laid on the ground, helpless to do anything but listen to the terrified whimpers of my teammates until Batman came running into the room followed by Zatanna. Zatanna took one look at the state we were all in and muttered something backwards before everything faded to black.
Five Hours Later
"You mean to tell me that whoever orchestrated this was smart enough to know how to kill an android but not ditch a costume that is being tracked?" Wally snapped, icing his still sore head. "Unbelievable. How can someone be so smart yet so stupid?"
"So where is she?" Those were the first words I had spoken since Wanda had left the team in shambles.
"According to our computers, she is in Metropolis." Black Canary pointed at the blinking dot on the screen.
"And according to our Intelligence, Hydra has no bases in Metropolis so we are facing a different threat." Hawkeye added, looking over at Black Widow to confirm this. Some of the Avengers had arrived a few hours after Wanda had left wanting to help bring her back and fix her mind.
"Any ideas? Do you know anyone who operates out of Metropolis?" Iron Man looked at the Justice League with an expectant expression.
Superman's face soured. "Well there is Lex Luthor, but he wouldn't be able to pull this off by himself."
Just then Dick slammed his hands down on the table. "The Light! It has to be them!" When he saw my confused expression, he filled me in. "The Light is an organization of criminals and supervillains from around the world who try to control the world from behind the scenes. And with Wanda under their control, they would be unstoppable."
"Isn't Ra's Al Ghul part of the Light? Why would he order Pietro to kill Wanda if he wanted her powers?" Wally piped in, seeing the expression on the Avengers faces. "Long story, tell you later."
"No, he left the Light, that must be why he wanted her dead." Dick mumbled. "So that his old friends could not have her powers."
It was silent in the meeting room as everyone processed the information. I was the first one to break the silence. "Clint, how did you break out of your mind control?"
Natasha grinned. "I hit him really hard on the head."
"Primitive, but it will work." I nodded decisively, stretching my sore muscles. "So when do we go after the Light?"
"As soon as you guys are recovered."
Wanda's POV
I woke up from my nap in a plush king sized bed, my arms stretching high above my head. I heard the door to the bedroom open and I looked over, seeing Queen Bee enter with a tray of food. "I see you are awake, good. How did you sleep, my child?"
I took the cup of steaming tea she handed me, sipping it carefully before I answered. "Like a baby, my queen."
Queen Bee grinned, patting my head as she sat down on the edge of the bed. She was quiet for a moment, pondering her next words carefully. "Do you regret doing what you did to your teammates?"
I shook my head immediately. "Of course not, they needed to be taught not to mess with me or the Light. I simply was the teacher of that lesson." I returned the smile Queen Bee sent me. The door opened once more and in walked a bald man in a business suit. I furrowed my brow. "Who are you?"
"My name is Lex Luthor, you are staying at my penthouse currently while we prepare a more...permanent resident for you." Lex explained, turning to Queen Bee. "My Queen, you are needed in the meeting. Let's wrap things up here, shall we?"
Queen Bee nodded, standing up from the edge of my bed and following Lex to the door, pausing at the threshold. She turned to address me. "Wanda, stay here. Practice your powers, my dear. We may need them sooner than we thought."
I nodded, watching as the door closed behind the two adults. I focused my energy on the bowl of steaming oatmeal in front of me, willing it with my mind to turn into a bowl of yogurt. Scarlet energy engulfed the bowl and its contents, trembling slightly before the transformation actually happened. Smirking, I spoke aloud to the empty room. "If I can change inorganic materials into other inorganic substances, I wonder if I can turn inorganic into organic?" I closed my eyes, focusing once more on the bowl in my hand. I willed with all my might for the bowl to turn into a frog and before I knew it, the cold ceramic became slimy skin. I yelped, dropping the frog onto the bed. When I realized it was a success, I began to giggle with glee. Queen Bee will be very proud of me.
Now I wonder if I can turn organic into inorganic?
I picked the frog up with slightly trembling hands, holding the small creature in my cupped palms. I felt the scarlet energy flow out from my palms and encase the tiny frog as I wished for the being to turn to stone. I felt the slime on my palms dry up and I watched as the once green skin turned a sickly gray color before hardening, becoming fully stone in my grasp. With a smirk, I crushed the small lifeless statue into dust.
I got out of bed and walked over to the floor to ceiling windows, looking out at the rising sun. The sun that would soon be rising on a new empire, an empire where the Justice League and the Avengers would fall, leaving room only for the Light.
I called out to Simon with my telepathy, letting him know of the progress I had made with my abilities. His reply took a few minutes but once it came my smirk grew into a malicious grin. Finally, some action around here. Simon's words echoed in my head as I strolled to the door, changing my outfit with a flick of my hand.
The heroes are on their way, prepare for battle.
