Second day of Christmas

Alfred_Is_A_Badass wanted superbat and i may had sprinkled some shipper Robin in there but shush

Batman was stubborn. Superman was stubborn when he wanted to be. Both had very strict views of justice and both weren't going to budge on that. They hated each other but that hate which had been building for years somehow turned into spiteful concern. They could spend the entire day bickering or ignoring each other but if one showed any signs of being anything from okay the other would drop the act. You could argue they were together but they'd never confirm it. Everyone knew that they were though. Robin never really got why it was supposed to be a secret and why no one had told him they were definitely together but he sure as hell shipped the pair. Luckily his confirmation of having two dads came sooner thanks to his mentor being a stubborn prick.

"Clark!" Robin greeted excitedly, jumping into the hero's arms.

"There's my favourite hero," he replied as he twirled him around before bringing him in for a tight hug. The boy giggled happily despite his mentor's disapproving gaze.

"Be careful with him," Batman growled. It sounded rougher than his usual voice. His usual voice was like gargling marbles but now it sounded like he added sandpaper to the mix. Superman raised an eyebrow at him, knowing that something was up immediately. He would say something but Robin was there and the poor boy worried about people enough.

"B said I'm coming on the mission! Diana is coming too right?" Batman nodded, watching the boy anxious as he climbed onto Superman's shoulders. Sure the person he was climbing on would easily catch him if he fell but he'd rather there be no falling in the first place.

"She is, now get down."

"He's fine here. I've got him," Superman argued, holding onto the younger's legs to keep him in place.

"I highly doubt that." The hero was going to continue but a cough cut him off. It sounded bad. Like it was wet.

"Dickie, why don't you go find Diana? She should be in the kitchen. Maybe you'll get a cookie?" Superman suggested. Robin took the hint and backflipped off his shoulders before running off.

"Only one cookie," Batman called to him though he doubted the younger heard him. His voice was far too hoarse to travel that far.

Superman walked to be beside him and stared at him. It was that look that said I know something was up. "What?" he snapped.

"Your voice. Sounds worse than usual."

"My voice is fine."

"Bruce."

"Clark." There was some silence between them as they reached their stalemate before Superman tutted at him, wrapping his arms around his waist to pull him closer. "I hate you sometimes," he muttered. He grabbed Batman's chin and narrowed his eyes at the dark bruise peeking out from beneath the cowl.

"Bad night?"

"Something like that," the shorter mumbled. The taller moved in to look a little closer and let his hand drop to cup Bruce's neck. There was a hiss at the new pressure, making him move instantly.

"Definitely bad then. Take it easy today, won't you?" He got a glare for even suggesting such a thing but it didn't scare him as much as it used to. It still made him uncomfortable though. "For Dickie and I."

"I can handle myself perfectly fine," he spat.

"I'm not saying you can't," Superman replied. He took his hands off the other when he heard Robin cackling down the hall. "This conversation isn't done. You're pushing yourself, Bruce. Don't be stupid."

"Shut it." He begrudgingly received a kiss on the cheek from the super but a small blush flourished on the exposed parts of his face.

A few moments later, Wonder Woman flew in with Robin in her arms. Said Robin had three cookies in his hand and one in his mouth. "One Robin," Batman growled.

"Oh don't be mean! He deserves all the cookies he wants," Wonder Woman defended, pinching his cheek lovingly. He cackled and batted her arm away.

"He needs the energy for the mission Bruce. He'll work it off fighting anyway," Superman defended. Batman glared at them both which was enough for her to at least stop flying and put her feet on the ground. Robin, unfazed by the glare as he always was, jumped down and ran over to his mentor before presenting him with a cookie.

"I brought one for you since you don't feel good."

"I specifically told you not to say that," Batman replied, resisting the urge to take the cookie. Why did this kid have to be so adorable non-stop? "We should-" he was cut off by a horrible cough.

"B, I think maybe you shouldn't do the mission today," Robin suggested, wincing back at the horrid sound. It just didn't sound like a normal cough. It sounded really bad.

"I'm," was all he could get out. It felt like his chest was in a vice. He couldn't stop coughing and he couldn't catch his breath. He tried to suck in air but it just made him feel even worse. He knew he was scaring his poor ward but he couldn't do anything to stop it. Something was terribly wrong and his body had decided he needed to know about it. Of course, it wouldn't tell him what was wrong just that something was wrong.

"What's happening?" Robin's frantic voice asked. He could barely hear it over the coughs rattling his frame.

"Diana, get him out of here, I'll take this one to the medbay," Superman ordered. She nodded and took Robin's hand. He shook her off and looked over at his mentor with a concerned look. "I've got him," the alien told him. He bit his lip reluctantly but conceded, trusting the man of steel, and took Wonder Woman's hand. Batman wanted to offer him some sort of comfort yet he couldn't speak a word. In fact, he wasn't awake long enough to say something before he left.

After rushing his unconscious lover to the medbay and having him looked over, Superman sat down beside his bed and held his hand. Turns out he had the beginnings of pneumonia. Typical that he'd try to hide something like this. Superman knew he shouldn't be mad. If he had a kid whilst doing this job, he'd probably hide it too but not to this point. Robin was terrified. He'd already lost one father, he must've had that thought he'd lose another. Even as a hero himself, Superman was scared when he saw Batman couldn't catch his breath. Now here they were. He kissed the man's knuckles, for his own benefit really. He doubted Batman could feel it in his condition. He immediately let go of his hand when he heard footsteps coming closer to them. He wished he didn't have to. In some way, he didn't understand why they had to keep it a secret at all. They were both grown men. They had people here who cared for them and were open-minded. It's not like they had to hide it from everyone. Hiding it from the press made sense. That would be a little too much for him never mind Batman. Making they were hiding it for Robin's sake. That way if they ever broke up, Robin wouldn't think it was his fault and it wouldn't hurt him to think he was losing someone. God knows the kid has some sort of attachment issue. The door to the room slid open to reveal just the boy he was thinking about. "Hey Dickie, I thought Diana was looking after you," he greeted. Robin awkwardly stepped into the room and closed the door behind him before fiddling with his gloves.

"There was an emergency and she had to go," he replied quietly. His eyes were fixed on his mentor.

"Why don't you come here instead of standing there?" Robin happily took his offer and ran over to him, jumping into his arms before being pulled onto his lap.

Now that he was closer, he could see how pale his mentor was. How sickly looking he was. He shifted closer to Superman and continued to fiddle with his gloves. "He's going to be okay right?" he asked softly.

"Of course, he will be. It's just a bad cold," he lied. He felt bad for doing it. If things took a turn for the worse then Robin would be thrust into even more uncertainty than he had before. The boy looked at him incredulously. "Should've known you're too smart for that. He has pneumonia but I think we caught it early. He'll be alright," he corrected. Robin was much more pleased with that response and leaned against him, finding some comfort in being close to him. "Sorry about the mission. I'm sure you were very excited."

"It's okay. I'd rather B be okay," he replied. "Are you going to be coming round then? Once he's home?" The older raised an eyebrow at him, gaining a smile. "Don't look so confused. It's obvious you two like each other."

"Uh-"

"Who would've thought hey? You lose one dad then you get two more. Guess I need a mum now." He yawned adorably then snuggled up to the bewildered hero more, hiding his face in his chest to block out the bright hospital lights. "Wake me up when he's awake please."

"I will Dickie," Superman replied. There was nothing to do other than lightly chuckle at how frank Robin was with all this. Definitely Batman's ward.
