It wasn't often that Dick was allowed outside the safety of the castle. He'd always looked out at the town just within reach with such curiosity but it had been much too dangerous. He was an heir to the throne and his first year as that would be the most dangerous with those in line to the throne wanting to bump up on the waitlist. Luckily, after begging and begging, he'd been allowed to go as long as he had a trusted knight with him. He chose Sir Kent much to his King's disapproval. The pair had never really got on but everyone in the village loved him so Bruce was forced to give him the knighthood to please them. Dick liked him though. He liked pretty much everyone so that wasn't a surprise. "Only a few hours in town then I want you back," Bruce told him. He wore that smile only Dick would see as he gave him a bag of gold coins. "Treat yourself to something since you've been doing well in your lessons."
"Thank you sire," he replied with a grin. There was one tooth missing, accidentally knocked out when he was playing with the knights, which only added to the innocence of him. He was so pure, Bruce mused. "Sir Kent, I trust you'll keep him safe unless you want to be stripped of your title."
"Yes, sire. He will return no different to when he left," he answered. The king hummed and gave his ward a kiss on the forehead.
"Be good." The boy nodded before bowing and leaving with his knight bodyguard. He couldn't wait to meet the townsfolk.
The town was lively and exactly what Dick had missed about travelling around the kingdoms in the circus. He enjoyed all the people rushing around and getting on with their days, all of them having interesting stories in some way or another. "Keep a hold of my hand sire," Sir Kent instructed. "You're much too small for me to find in a crowd."
"I'm supposed to be small!" Dick retorted at the taunt. The older smiled and led him to the market where he could put his gold coins to use. There were many different stalls but none of them took his fancy. He didn't see the point in buying food because the cooks had all of that prepared for him. He didn't see the point in buying furs nor rugs because Bruce had plenty. He wanted something personal. Something that wasn't needed but would still hold some value. "What do you think Bruce- I mean king Bruce - would like?" Dick asked, correcting himself quickly. He was still getting the hang of royal lingo. Clark laughed to himself at the small blunder as they continued to walk past the stalls. All of them had sellers yelling their prices and deals but none of them were all that appealing. They were selling essentials and, well, Bruce didn't need those things. It was odd really. All Dick had known was poverty. Although the circus travelled, they were extremely tight with their money. It got to a point where there'd be nights where he wouldn't eat. Those nights usually came in the winter and his parents would apologize all the time for it but for some reason it didn't matter that much. He had them and that was enough. It had always been enough. "I don't know sire. He's rather hard to buy for isn't he?"
"Indeed. Maybe we should come back later? Then I would've had some time to think about it," he suggested.
"That's very smart of you. How about we go to the farm so you can look at the animals? I'm sure you're used to more exotic creatures but we only have the livestock needed to keep the town running," Clark proposed. The acrobat nodded with a bright smile. He always loved animals. Sure these animals would be nowhere as interesting as the many animals that he'd worked with from different lands but they'd be fun to meet nonetheless. "Perhaps you can purchase a pig for a feast?"
"We've plenty of meat at the castle. Perhaps I can use my gold coins to help someone out?"
"That's rather noble of you."
"Well, when I was performing, money was hard to come by. Something so small can mean a lot to the right person." His knight's smile turned solemn at the mention of the boy's last life. He too had been forced to abandon a life he'd once loved. His kingdom had been destroyed and lost to time, his family killed in the aftermath. He knew the young boy's pain yet he was lucky enough to have been much too young to remember most of it. Poor Dick had seen the murder of his parents and he didn't doubt their last moments had tainted all the memories before then. "Do you miss the circus sire?"
"Yes but I like it here too. It's just hard sometimes. I'd rather not speak about it."
"Of course sire."
When they got to the animals there was another boy there. He was a little older than Dick and had bright ginger hair. His face was filled with freckles and he had emerald eyes. As soon as the acrobat turned prince laid eyes upon him, he felt something. He wasn't sure what it was but it was a feeling. "Hello," he greeted timidly. The boy smiled upon seeing him, despite the fact he was sporting a rather nasty black eye.
"Hey kid, how can I help you?"
"Oh, I just wanted to see the animals. What's your name?" he inquired.
"I'm Wally. Wally West. And you are?" He stuck out a hand that was rather dirty but Dick shook it anyway. He liked this boy already.
"I'm Richard but you can call me Dick."
"Sire, I must remind you to use your proper title," Clark reminded him. He huffed at having to use the formality. He'd rather just be Dick but there were rules that must be adhered to.
"Prince Richard but please ignore it," he corrected. Wally went wide-eyed and dropped to one knee. Exactly what he didn't want.
"I'm so sorry my highness-"
"Don't do that Wally. I'm just a circus kid. Are these your animals?" he asked, wanting to get the attention off of him. He really didn't like this part of being royal. It felt weird demanding some sort of respect without having to work for it first. The people he'd be able to talk to and have fun with when he was without the title were now polite to him for the sake of being polite. He'd rather they just act like he was one of them. "They're my family's sir. My father's to be exact."
"Help! Help!" someone called from far off. Clark immediately snapped his head in that direction then looked to the prince.
"Go help them. I'll be okay with Wally, won't I?" He looked to the boy he only just met and nudged him.
"Oh right yes! Totally safe with me." Clark hummed, glancing from the boys to the continued calls for help.
"Stay here. Got that?" He nodded and waved the knight off as he ran into the crowd, disappearing amongst the people. Now that he was gone, Dick turned to the ginger who was still tense because holy shit a royal was stood right next to him to look at the animals. "You can drop that sir as quickly as you found it," he stated. "Like I said, I'm just a circus kid."
"O-okay," Wally replied nervously.
"How'd you get that black eye?" he asked. "It looks rather painful."
"I forgot to do my chores," the older responded, touching it faintly upon remembering the incident. "Father had to teach me."
"He's a shit teacher." The swear made him chuckle which made Dick giggle to himself.
"That's rather filthy language for someone so royal."
"Meh, you don't look like the type to snitch on me."
They chatted, enjoying every minute of it, until Wally's father came out. Wally instantly tensed back up and his joy quickly left him. "You're supposed to be selling the pigs not letting some brat look at them!" the man snapped.
"Father you mustn't say such things. He's Prince Richard," Wally informed him.
"Prince bullshit more like! I'm in the right mind to drag him back to whatever whore he came from." Dick glared at the man.
"Don't you dare speak ill of the dead," he snapped in a low tone. It was dangerous. Venomous. A tone that was not to be messed with. Anyone could see that. Anyone who was sober would. Unfortunately, Wally's father had been drinking their last income away and was extremely intoxicated. They could smell the alcohol on his breath. "Oh boo hoo mummy is dead. Scram if you know what's good for you. You, Wallace, are getting a spanking for doing a shit job. Can't trust you to do anything." He went to grab the boy by the collar but Dick slapped his hand away.
"You'll do nothing of the sort! You will no longer hurt this boy again. Here." He took his bag of gold coins and chucked them at the man. He knew people like this and money was the only way to convince them. "That much for your son." Wally's father narrowed his eyes as he checked the coins. To his shock they were real.
"What do you want him for?"
"He'll be a personal servant. Well cared for and fed every night. Far away from your drunken ass," he answered.
"Sire, you don't need to do this," Wally told him.
"But I want to. What do you say, drunkard?" The older remained silent then shrugged.
"Have him. He's got no shit to take with him so you two can get lost," he growled. Dick rolled his eyes and took Wally by the hand, leaving in the direction Clark had run off in.
Wally was completely shocked. He'd just been sold. Yet it felt oddly okay? He couldn't help but feel free now even if he was a servant to the prince. That wasn't bad either. It was a good job, better than the one he was forced into. He almost couldn't believe the kindness of the boy who was now dragging him through the crowds. "Are you alright?" Dick asked. "I hope I didn't step over the line. I couldn't stand you being talked down to and you'd be so much better with me."
"No it's just...thank you. Thank you so much. I-I have to make this up to you," he answered.
"You needn't make it up to me. All I ask for is a friendship and you to be safe. I'm going to protect you from now on so don't even worry about it." He paused for a moment and gave him a tight hug. "You look like you needed one," he explained, nervously hoping he didn't cross the line.
"I did. And if you shall protect me then I must do the same for you. I'm forever in your debt sire." Dick cackled softly and shook his head though didn't argue with him. He held his hand, interlocking their fingers, then continued to lead him in search for the night. "Clark is going to have a whale of a time explaining this to B."
A few years later
Wally was awoken by a ray of light shining on his face from the gap in the curtains. He rubbed his eye groggily and looked over to the man he was sharing a bed with. He smiled to himself and wrapped his arms around him. No one else could do this. Mostly because no one else was allowed to. It was rather scandalous really but their lie to protect themselves made total sense. Dick suffered from terrible nightmares and to avoid bothering the king with such small issues, he had to have his servant Wally in the room with him to calm him down. They needn't know that in order to keep him calm, Wally had to be in the bed with him. Neither did they need to know that they were no longer friends. The ginger kissed the royal's cheek, gaining a low grumble. "It's time to wake up baby bird," he called sweetly.
"Why?" he whined.
"Because you have duties. You'll only create suspicion by resting for longer."
"Ugh I hate when you're right," Dick whined. He sat up, smiling when he received another kiss on the cheek, and got out of bed. His servant was swiftly by his side to get him ready for the day.
"Indeed but you like the rest of me," Wally chuckled.
"I do love you," he mumbled. The room went quiet. He'd never said that before. "Uhm."
"You just said you loved me." Dick broke out into a bright blush and looked away flustered. He heard the other laugh at him and tutted. "I love you too for the record but I will forever make fun of you for saying it first." His eyes jumped up to meet his servant's vibrant green ones.
"W-Would you like to go unofficially official?"
"Is this a very cute way of asking me to be your boyfriend without announcing it?" The acrobat nodded. He kissed him on the lips chastely then pulled away with a smile. "Then you have an official unofficial boyfriend."
