Too Much To Lose
Sometimes people will be far too gone for this world...death for them isn't punishment....to them it's freedom.
I can't believe that a thirteen year old girl told me the difference for killing for enjoyment from killing for self-defense.
Although clearly, Joanne tried to stab me with a glass shard but I easily overpowered her. But I said it once and I'll say it again, I had doubts about killing those raiders.
But at least I'm still human....or at least I think so....but I had to think more before taking the life of someone....it's never okay to do that, but then again, Aurei had a point. The look in Joanna's eyes, she was lost in her eyes and broken with her twisted smile. Maybe I'm taking this a little too hard....
I hear the groans get louder, I rise from the bed to see that Aurei is still asleep...but I sluggishly moved from the bed and grabbed my revolver, walking out into the hallway...then I see Jeffrey downstairs, with a lighter in his hand.
As I keep creeping downstairs, he was carrying a bucket of something dark...and there were small dark stains on the carpet. For some reason...I got tense, and I was hoping to actually find some people that are just like us....surviving, still human...but it seems like everyone is losing it now...
The stairs creak under my feet, and I heard the undead groaning...Jeffrey quickly turns around.
Shit!
"Avery?" Jeffrey asks, his tone is different...please don't let him be like Joe...please....
"She's bad news Dad, her and her bitch of a sister." Lydia mutters. My eyes widen, Lydia despised Aurei, but for what? Why? I know Aurei is still thirteen, and very mature but other than that...she's a caring and loving, protective person....I get that people don't like certain people, but I really don't see it...she isn't bratty like she used to be...
"Lydia, you know how I feel about that language inside the house." Jeffrey said sternly.
"Avery, you should be in bed...it's late." Jeffrey suggests. Instead, I walk into the living room, blindly groping the sofa for something that I could see with.
"What's going on?" I ask, using the lighter as my guide towards them. My eyes flicker down to the bucket Jeffrey was holding in his hands, Lydia was holding a bloody towel in her hands which were completely coated in blood.
"Nothing." Lydia snaps, her voice getting a bit loud.
"No, who's blood is that? Your grandmothers?" I ask.
"So what?! My grandma has been sick for years! She's a diabetic!" She yells, Jeffrey puts a hand on her shoulder to quiet her down.
"How long have you been giving her treatment?" I ask, glancing upstairs at the bedroom on the right.
"We ran out...she's doing fine! This is why we stayed here Avery! Because the routes have the treatment! We've been running back and forth my mother has been fine! She only went three weeks without it! She's getting better!" Jeffrey shouts, I hear the stairs creak, I slowly turned around to see that it was just Aurei, and she looked angry.
"What's with the yelling? You're louder than the biters! Keep this up and we'll all get killed." Aurei hisses, then she crosses her arms.
"I'm sick of you Aurei...acting like you're a tough little bitch, stop being selfish!" Lydia growls, sneering at Aurei. But Aurei just furrows her eyebrows at her.
"Selfish? You're the one who is spending your time in your room, feeling sorry for yourself and acting like a asshole. I get it...I didn't want the world to be this way either, this isn't regular society anymore Lydia, so grow the hell up and try to understand that people care about you!" Aurei hisses, Lydia glares at her, but she had nothing else to say.
"Girls...please. Keep it down, they can hear us." I whisper, Aurei and Lydia nod in unision.
I hear loud groans coming from upstairs, Lydia starts to bolt towards the stairs as the bedroom door begins to pound.
Aurei quickly turns her around.
"Don't go in there....I don't want the same thing happening to you like it did to me." Aurei said, grabbing Lydia by the shoulders.
"Aurei no! She's my grandma!" Lydia said, her voice cracking.
"I know what you're going through, trust me. But would your Dad want this? Your grandmother? You know what happens when you die...." Aurei said, trying to hug Lydia but she glares at her.
"That's enough Aurei." I said, walking up to her and touching her shoulder but Aurei shakes it off.
"No, it's not." Aurei said coldly, giving me a hurt stare.
"You're selfish! Thinking of-" Lydia yells but Aurei gives her a hard slap, the sound echoing all over the house, Aurei glares at her as Lydia put her hand on her cheek.
"I didn't want to...please...are you listening?!" Aurei asks, Jeffrey just stares with wide eyes. Lydia shoves Aurei away, bolting up the stairs, I run after her, but Lydia opens the door, a woman topples over Lydia.
Aurei stares with wide eyes, she looks away a she grimaces.
"N-S-ST-" Lydia stutters, but the roamer that must've been her grandmother, she had a short pixie cut, and a long nightgown that was covered in blood.
Lydia struggles with the roamer, but her grandmother kept groaning hungrily, opening her mouth and sinking into Lydia's neck. Lydia lets out a blood curlding scream. I kick the roamer against the wall but the roamer kept reaching her hands out towards Lydia....but Lydia was covering her neck.
"Oh God! Daddy!" Lydia sobs, clutching her neck. I stomp the roamer by the head, her skull starts to cave in as I kept stomping her by the head, then I turn to Lydia, pulling out my revolver.
"D-do it." She gurgles, I look ahead as I pull the trigger.
"NO!!!!!" Jeffrey yells, collasping on the staircase, Aurei walks up to him but he shoves her away.
I look down at the corpse of Jeffrey's mother, she was already rotting, her skin was pale....and when I saw her face before I stomped it in, her eyes were sunken into the sockets with her cheeks sunken inside, and her lips were nowhere to be seen.
Lydia had her eyes closed, with a bullethole in her forehead. The groans of the undead got louder, Aurei pulls Jeffrey on his feet.
"We have to go, I know you're grieving but you can't die like this...I won't." Aurei said, pulling Jeffrey back on his feet, he grips onto his pistol.
I dash down the stairs, grabbin Jeffrey and pulling him up.
"Avery, grab your stuff! Now!" I yell, Jeffrey breaks away from me, Aurei jogs down the stairs with both bags on each of her shoulders.
I turn around to run towards the door, but I hear glass shatter and a scream. I immediatley turn around to see Aurei trying to break free from a roamer's grip, it had it's teeth close to her wrist but she puts up a fight.
I felt my blood go warmer than it was before. I run towards the roamer, then I pull the trigger without any thought.
Aurei rips herself away from the roamer, it's hand still on her wrist but she hauls it away from her, then gets up, running after Jeffrey. I run after them, then out the door.
The roamers were walking everywhere, I start pulling the trigger at each roamer that tried to limp after us, I keep running, Jeffrey kept shooting as well.
It wasn't rage, nor fury....it's adreline rush.
I dodge a roamer that tries to make a grab for me, then jumped over the logs and the roots of the tree. A roamer tries to grab Aurei but she ducks from the grab. Jeffrey shoots the roamer in the head and keeps running.
Another roamer approaches me, I kick him by the knee then I shot him recklessly at the head, the blood emerging from it's head as he collaspses onto the ground.
The gunshot sends a ringing noise into my ear, I stumble over to see Aurei running towards me as another roamer approaches me but I kick it in the chest, Aurei stomps it by the head, and the skull caves in as she stomps her foot deeper into it. She nods at me, but my eyes widen as I see the roamer limp behind her.
"Move!!" I yell, pulling her behind me as I shoot anothe roamer, then I run after her. It's hard to see out here, but I could see the dusty road ahead.
Something grabs my foot, I crash into the ground, I turn around to see a roamer climb on top of me, it opens it's mouth, groaning aggressively as he tries to get to my neck.
I kick it in the face, scurrying up to my feet as I run down the woods, my eyes darting left and right, searching for Aurei.
I duck as the roamer that hung on the tree, to see Aurei running with Jeffrey.
I pant as I manage to get into the road, Aurei stares at me, her eyes wide. I walk up to her, grabbing he face and checking her neck and her hands.
"I'm not bit." Aurei said, Jeffrey walks ahead of us.
"But what about you?" Aurei asks, crossing her arms. I pant heavily, grabbing my knees as I took in short breaths.
"Nothing, let's go." I said, Aurei nods and catches up with Jeffrey, who doesn't utter a word since we escapes the roamers.
I look behind myself to see more roamers limping around, but not after us.
My eyes flicker to the gun Jeff was holding....and he was gripping it tight.....
