The Final Fuse
It's been four days since we've been walking, Jeffrey never uttered a word to us, Aurei tried to pat his shoulder but he just glared at her and walked faster.
Lydia was a brat...but she didn't deserve to die....no child deserves to die....but I learned something from this....if I'm going to teach Aurei how to shoot, I'll have to teach her right.
I wondered how Aurei was taking this whole thing...if she blamed herself for this whole thing...or if she's depressed. But I'm more worried of what Jeffrey's capable of, he gripped onto his gun whenever Aurei got close...but if that does happen, I will have to kill him in a heartbeat.
I need to get myself together...but my emotions have been getting the best of me.
Aurei walks slowly beside me. We were still walking down the road, luckily we hid in trees when there were too many to handle, Aurei knew she had to give Jeffrey some time and space...
"He's mad at me." Aurei whispers, gripping onto the strap of her bag and staring straight ahead.
"Give him some time...this is extremely hard for him..." I said, squeezing her shoulder. She nods but tilts her head to the side.
"I know Avery, he lost a daughter...this is completely screwed up but...this is the world now." She said with a shrug.
"You were right about the killings." I admit, she shrugs.
"They were bad people....life is more dangerous than death sometimes." Aurei said, the more she talked, the more she sounded like Dad.
"Dad?" I ask, she just nods. Aurei must've been still torn about Cassie and Lydia...she tried to help them but they wouldn't listen.
"There's a car." Jeffrey points out in the most dullest voice I ever heard in my life.
"There's probably some gas." I said. I feel a bad feeling grow inside me. I kept a straight face when I saunter towards the car, I forgot that I still had Joe's dagger.
Soon as Jeffrey opens the door, a roamer tumbles out. Jeffrey looks at me for help but before I could do anything Aurei walks up and stomps it by the skull, she keeps stomping. That was the only way she knew how to protect herself against the roamers.
"Hey, that's enough." I said, pulling her back, she just pants.
Jeffrey drags the body away, as I climb inside the car, the keys were still in the slot, and there was a map. Aurei opens the back door.
"It's good." Aurei said, staring at me, waiting for me to say something.
"How much gas does it have?" Jeffrey asks, I step inside, turning the key and starting the car. The car cranks to life.
"Get in, we don't have to travel by foot anymore." I said, Jeffrey shrugs then steps into the passenger's seat, Aurei sits in the back, putting on the seatbelt.
"We can head past the highway, then we'll stop and decide from there." I said, Jeffrey isn't looking at me, he's just staring at the window. Aurei nods, rubbing her ankle.
I drive down the road, it seems like we would have gas until we get past the highway...but we'll try to avoid the skyscrapers.
I keep driving, finally making some distance, past a wrecked car. The silence was so bitter....it was like you're on death row and you're waiting to get the chair.
"Jeffrey?" Aurei asks softly. I slow down a little to face Jeffrey, his face was full of hatred and scorn.
"What the fuck do you want?" He growls, Aurei looks down.
"I'm sorry-" Aurei looks him in the eye but Jeffrey cuts her off.
"Oh you're sorry! You have no emotions whatsoever when Lydia died." Jeffrey spat, Aurei furrows her eyebrows at him.
"Stop it." I snap, glaring at Jeffrey.
"That's not true, you're blaming me because all you do is feel sorry for yourself. You're not the only one carrying weight on your shoulders, I get what you're feeling Jeff but being an asshole taking your anger out on others isn't the answer." Aurei said, Jeffrey turns all the way around.
"Funny! Coming from someone's who's dead weight." Jeffrey said coldly, Aurei looks away, taking a deep breath.
I stop the car.
"Jeffrey, Aurei did-" I tried to say but Jeffrey stops me.
"No, Aurei this is all your fault! Everything is. Why does your sister even keep you alive-" Jeffrey says but I pin him against the glass.
"One more word, and you're a second away from getting left, my sister is smart." I growl, slamming him against the door.
"It is your fault Aurei, no matter how smart or tough you are...you're gonna die." Jeffrey said emotionlessly.
"That's not fair." Aurei protests but Jeffrey steps out of the car.
I quickly step outside, Aurei stares at Jeffrey.
Jeffrey presses his pistol to his temple, he was gone...and there was nothing we could do about this.
"You don't have to do this." Aurei whispers, sauntering in a slow way.
"Put the gun down....you're not thinking." I said. Jeffrey half laughs, then shoots Aurei a dirty look.
"There would be no more deaths because of this little girl. Maybe there is no hope....there is no cure. Avery, you're gonna die too, just watch...." Jeffrey said with a broken smile on his face.
"No-" Aurei tries to grab Jeffrey's hand but it's too late. Jeffrey falls to the side, Aurei closes her eyes, then she glares.
"He's gone Aurei." I said, looking down at Jeffrey.
He blamed this all on Aurei....that wasn't fair...she tried her damnest to help Lydia...but they're both delusional.
The blood was spilled across my face, but I kept staring down at Jeffrey, he had his eyes wide open, his pupils were small, and the blood spreads on the street. Aurei takes a deep breath, wheezing a little.
"Can we go?" Aurei asks, her voice is hardened, I walk up to hug Aurei but she steps away. From the look from her eyes, they were wide.
"This isn't your fault." I reassure her but she shakes her head.
"I know that...it wasn't fair when he blamed me." Aurei confesses, wiping tears from her eyes.
"He's right about a couple of things." Aurei admits, closing her eyes. I just glare at her.
"Aurei you know good and damn well that Lydia's death wasn't your fault, him killing himself wasn't your fault and Cassie wasn't your fault." I said, but she nods, hugging me before backing away.
"Not that....I'll need to learn how to shoot eventually." Aurei said, I nod slowly.
"And I'll teach you...but not now." I said.
"I understand that Avery...I just-" Aurei said, shakin her head. I nod, she's stubborn when she needs to be.
"He was a good man though...." Aurei said, turning to Jeffrey. I nod my head, aggreeing. But this man blamed her for the death of his daughter....I don't know how she's taking all of this....
I walk over to Jeffrey's body, grabbing his pistol....he had none left, then I carry him towards the ditch, he was pretty light....there wasn't anything we could use to bury him...so I just step inside the car, Aurei sits beside me.
"Okay, let's go..." I said breathlessly, Aurei nods then I keep driving, Aurei stares ahead like she usually does.
Jeffrey had saved that last bullet for himself...so he must've been planning this before he got into a heated argument with Aurei.
I keep driving, seeing less feilds and less houses, at least we were getting somewhere.
Ever since Aurei met Lydia...she was always the bigger person....she's like my twin...hopefully she grows up right and doesn't take the wrong signs...I have to teach her well...but knowing Aurei, she knows better not to shoot a random person on purpose...
And I'm sure as hell not gonna die without knowing that Aurei is alive.
Not ever
