Close Your Eyes Cassie
I open my eyes, the heat has been beating down on me ever since I tried to sleep, I wipe the sweat of my forehead to keep if from reaching my eyes.
I hear soft talking coming from the kitchen, I get up to walk down the hallway to see Cassie and Aurei talking.
"Then she kept them in the car until she was sure there were no snakes left!" Cassie squeals, giggling. Aurei smiles gently.
"Hey sis, Cassie was just telling me about what her mom did." Aurei said neutrally.
"That's fine, but did you both eat something?" I ask, they both nod in the perfect harmony.
"I saved some food for you." Aurei adds as I walk towards the bag on the table and pulling out some can of beans.
"We should plan on barricading the windows, so the biters don't get in." Aurei suggests, looking up at me.
"You're right. I'll take some chairs apart and start barricading at noon." I said, pulling out my gun and unloading it.
"Biters?" Cassie asks, raising a curious blonde eyebrow, not too long ago that was the same reaction when Joe called them roamers.
"Aren't they people that need help?" Cassie asks.
Yesterday she called these so called people things...now she's considering them as people, her mind is fried or she has a really poor memory.
"They rot, they eat the living, they kill the living just to eat some more, they're just the dead eating the living." I said coldly.
"These aren't people, you said yourself yesterday that these were things." I add, putting down the can of beans that were in my hand.
"How can you be sure?" Cassie asks, her green eyes dart to Aurei, who just furrows her eyebrows and closed her eyes.
"Because it happened before." Aurei said, standing up to walk down the hallway.
"I-I'm sorry...I didn't know." Cassie stammers, lowering her head. I hope Aurei doesn't go hollow, I know she's mature and she doesn't really panic anymore like she used to but I still worry about what this type of stuff will do to her.
"You didn't know...but the undead don't think, they don't have emotions and they feel no sympathy when they tear someone apart or eat their flesh." I said, sitting down beside her.
I hear screams and gunshots, Cassie immediatley looks at me, I hurry over to the window to see a woman and a younger man run to the house.
I run over to my revolver, putting the bullets back into the cylinder, then I grab Joe's dagger. I noticed that the chair that barricaded the door was no longer there.
"Aurei!" I shout, I hear hear a rush of heavy footsteps pounding beneath her feet.
"What's going on?" Aurei asks her eyes wide.
The whirls open, stopping us from being able to do anything.
I hear the undead groan as the woman closes the door, backing up against it, I grab my gun and point it at her head.
"What are you doing in our house?" I growled, the venom in my voice begun to grow as the kid that stood beside her points his gun at us.
"This is our grandfather's house! What are you doing here!" He yells.
"Samuel, now's not the time." The woman warns, I hear the undead pound against the door as the woman presses her body against the door.
"What happened to our grandpa?!" The boy demands.
"Shut up!" Aurei hisses, looking outside to see the roamers groaning as they begun to scratch at the windows.
"He shot himself..." I said, trying to calm the boy down.
"Liar! You killed him!!" He yells, trembling as he held the gun, just by looking he didn't know how to use a gun properly.
"I wouldn't do that...trust me. But if you keep screaming, you'll die." I warned as the noises of the undead got louder.
The window shatters, the undead begun to climb in, I begun to hold my gun up.
"No! She killed our grandpa Mom!" He yells, I slowly back away, if they didn't move, they're gonna get theirselves killed.
The undead start to walk towards us, I begun to shoot some of the roamers by the head, but there were too many, one roamer, a man with his lower intestines ripped from his stomach pulled the boy's head back by his hair and bites into his neck.
He screams in agony, as the roamer pulls away with the boy's flesh in it's teeth, causing blood to spill down onto his chest. Aurei grabs Cassie and urges her to run down the hall. The roamer that bit him kept eating him, pulling his veins apart.
The undead begun to finish the boy off, the woman screams as her son is being devoured by the undead.
Some of the roamers begun to corner the woman, I run after Aurei towards the bedroom where I stitched Cassie, then I close and use the chair to barriade the door with the chair I fell asleep in.
"What are we gonna do?!!?" Cassie asks, grabbing fistfulls of her hair.
Then I use the foldout chair, running towards the window, slamming the chair against the window, then I take another forceful swing, shattering the glass, I got my hand caught in most of the glass, causing my wrist to bleed.
I grab Aurei, she nods at me then climbs out, Cassie does the same, the roamers scratch at the door, I climb up from the window, hopping down to see the undead migrating from the woods, limping and staggering towards the house.
It's hard to see everything with the tall grass around the house but I keep running.
I run after Aurei and Cassie, a roamer lunges after Aurei, but she quickly dodges it, Cassie stands there, as if paralyzed.
"Cassie move!" I yell, pulling out my revolver, aiming at the roamer and pulling the trigger.
Another roamer hurries behind her, biting into Cassie's arm, she shrieks a the blood trickles down her arm.
"No!!! Aurei! Avery!!! Help me!!" She screams as another roamer brought her down, she keeps screaming, Aurei stares down wide eyed.
"Close your eyes Cassie!" Aurei yells after her, I run behind Aurei, pulling her away from the roamer herd.
"She's gone! Come on!" I barked, shooting a roamer in the head and pulling Aurei away from the house and into the street.
The roamers follow us but Aurei and I kept running, keeping Joe's dagger in my hand and my revolver in the other.
My feet begun as I kept running alongside with my little sister, and she didn't dare to look back at the house.
It was only a day that Cassie spent with us until she died, and Aurei is secretly taking it pretty hard. And when you feel guitly, it'll slowly eat you alive.
I dodge a roamer, it's taller than me, but I kick it down onto it's back and stomped it in his head.
I felt so horrible seeing that happen to Cassie, and it made my hatred for the undead grow.
We keep running until we lose the roamers that were staggering behind us.
"Keep moving Aurei!" I hiss, my legs aching from all the running, but I kept going.
Aurei's eyes. Her eyes. They are now ice cold, as we kept running down the road, past crawling roamers and dodging the ones that were eaten alive. But out of everything I've seen so far, the look in her eyes bothered me.
I don't want to become Joe. Neither do I want Aurei to become Joe. Now her eyes were viscious, full of venom. This may be a advantage but it can also get you killed.
Aurei lets out a deep breath, then she continues to run like she never did before, I start to slow down, letting her pass me but I continue to stay alert.
Cassie is dead, because of those two idiots who accused us for killing that old man. All Aurei could do was tell her to close her eyes. I was annoyed by Cassie...but she deserved a chance to live like everyone else. Within a day she died, but she told me that all she could do was run.
Aurei was just making a friend until the roamers ate her alive.
But now I couldn't let Aurei run without being able to defend herself. Then my heart skips a beat. Her inhaler. We left it along with our food and supplies. But there's no going back, not now, not ever.
