A Sacrifice
We crouch down as the boy I saw yesterday opens the fence, we start running past a couple of roamers. Elise crouches beside me, her eyes widening as we pass the roamers. Her breathing got louder, but Isaac creeps beside her.
"I know you're scared, but they're really really slow, so relax and don't do anything stupid." He whispers. Elise nods her head as we pass the undead.
One staggers in front of me, James stops at the huge barricaded building. Isaac puts a hand on my shoulder.
"Use your dagger, you'll have the dead on us if you use your gun." He whispers in my ear, he's right. One loud noise can attract the roamers towards us and eat us alive. From the looks of it, they were all rotting, their skin in a slight darker complexion. I could still hear Elise's heavy breathing.
I silently kick the roamer by the knee then quickly stabbed it by the head, everyone turns to me. Elise whimpers stops everyone from moving.
"Be quiet." I hissed.
A blood curdling scream rings my ears, I turn around to see the roamers piling over one of the women that came with us, she keeps screaming. James yells out, causing the undead to turn their heads towards us.
Shit.
"Kelly no!!!" James yells, running towards the roamers and shooting them by the head. I get up and run towards the store. Elise breaks out into breathing fits. The roamer from behind bites the side of his neck, ripping the flesh apart, James lets out a blood curdling scream.
"J-James...." She gasps, Isaac grabs her by the arm then runs towards the building, Connor and the other man run behind them, shooting the roamers by the head. I hold open the door and closed it. Soon as I step inside, Isaac uses his body as a barricade to the door.
"Fuck fuck fuck!" The man freaks out, grabbing fistfulls of his hair, pacing around the desk.
Connor hands me the rifle and he walks towards the man having a breakdown. To my surprise there were carts full of huge cans, preserved fruit, but the place stenched. I hear a familiar groan behind me, I turn around and stabbed the roamer by the head, letting it thud against the desk.
"Calm down Liam." Connor said, patting his shoulder.
Elise starts screaming, grabbing her hair, Connor tries to calm her down but she keeps screaming. I bite my lip and walked to her quickly, ramming her head with the back of the rifle, Elise falls flat onto the ground.
"Damn Avery." Connor mutters, I ignore him, looking down at Elise, I had to knock her out.
"If you run you die. If you scream you die." I said, Isaac shoots me a dirty look but I ignore it, turning to Connor.
"Connor I need you to carry Elise, if she wakes up screaming before we get back, knock her out." I order, Liam looks at me.
"Grab everything you can, we can head out from the back." I said, pointing at the back door from the aisle full of wine and alcohol.
"Got it." He said, picking Elise up and grabs his small gun.
"I can destract them." Isaac said quickly, I shake my head from side to side.
"I got this Avery, trust me. Just take the group back to the hospital and if I don't come...consider me dead." Isaac said, grabbing his shotgun, passing Liam the bag full of cans.
"C'mon." I said, Connor walks over to the door, opening it, there are only a few roamers staggering down the alleyway.
I hear gunshots, Connor closes his eyes, showing a pained expression on his face. I begin to run, past the cars full of rotting corpses with flies swarming around them, I make a wild turn to hear yelling and more gunshots.
"Dammit!!!" I hear a wild yell, past the roamers huddling together, I see Isaac getting his chest ripped open, he drops the gun, screaming in terror.
"Come on, if you slow down I can't come back for you." I said, my voice being dominated by the agonizing screams from Isaac as the undead stuff his organs into his mouth.
The tank in front of the hospital gate is noticeable, Connor shifts his weight as Elise is still knocked out. I start running past the huddle of roamers, the boy behind the fence watches with tears in his eyes, more of the undead start following us, but I keep running as the boy opens the fence.
Laurie stands there, shocked. I start walking inside, facepalming myself. The man who saved my little sister is being torn apart by the undead by the second. If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't have gotten past that many roamers. I have to stay strong.
"Oh my God..." Laurie mutters quietly as I slowly pass her.
"He wanted to distract them....he couldn't get away...." I pant, Connor and Liam catch up behind me as the boy closes the fence. Liam hands Laurie the bag.
"It's a five month supply, enough for everyone here." Liam said breathlessly.
"And James?" Laurie asks, Connor turns away, the pain clearly scattered all over his face. She closes her eyes.
"He didn't make it..." Liam said, with tears brimming in his eyes.
"Avery, Aurei is upset about something...I've asked her but she just shrugs it off like it's nothing, please talk to her." Laurie pleads, I nod, handing Connor back his rifle and walking past the main desk and down the hall.
I rush down the hall, seeing patients stare at me with grief in their eyes, I open the door to see Aurei standing up, with Dr. Mayfield sitting in the chair that I fell asleep.
"Aurei....you shouldn't be standing up-" Aurei cuts me off.
"I'm fine." Aurei said coldly.
I look at Dr. Mayfield cross his legs, folding his hands together. He said something....something that bothered Aurei.
"I simply told her what happens to little girls like her. They don't last long." Dr. Mayfield said emotionlessly. Aurei turns around.
"Get out." I spat harshly.
Dr. Mayfield gets up, stopping at the door.
"You know what happens, make the right decision Avery. You can get yourself killed." He said, and with that he closes the door, Aurei just looks down.
"Hey..." I try to comfort her.
"It's fine. He has a point...." She said, there was no longer a little girl in her voice. She sounds like her heart had been ripped out and she was forced to smile during the whole thing.
"He does, but you're not gonna die. How are you feeling?" I ask, walking up to her, she just shrugs.
"I can't feel the hole anymore." She said, folding her arms.
"Okay, I'm teaching you how to use a gun tomorrow." I said with a small smile, squeezing her shoulders.
"Okay." Aurei said, I hug her, she squeezes me.
"Hey....I know how this feels, but he doesn't know you. I'm sorry but you can't be a kid anymore. No more tears okay?" I said, kneel down to her level.
"I know Avery, I'm not trying to act like one." She said, grazing her fingers over her scar.
Laurie opens the door, carrying loads of clothes.
"Hey, we have regular clothes for her." Laurie says, resting them on the bed.
Aurei nods, walking over to the bed, slowly closing her eyes. I just sit down, with Aurei's gun in my hand.....
