Roadside Romance

"Let's go on a trip."

"Where?"

"I dunno, but I wanna go on a road trip. I'm gonna go rent a car, you, get your stuff together. We leave in an hour."

~~~
That had been two hours ago. When the young, white haired, scythe had left her room, Maka had the widest grin on her face. You see, Maka loved car rides. She loved cars with sun roofs, she loved riding with the windows down and being able to rest her head on the door, feeling the wind on her face. Maka loved sitting beside someone she loved, friend or someone more special, because adventuring with one you love is one of the best things in the world.
Especially when the one beside you is the boy you had been in love with since you met. Yes, Maka Albarn was in love with her amazing partner Soul Eater, but she never had the courage to tell him. She didn't want to risk losing him as a partner, and more importantly, as a best friend. Maka didn't know what she would do without that crimson eyed man by her side. Losing him as a partner would be one thing, but losing his friendship? There's no way she would be able to do that, but she didn't have to worry about that. Why, you ask? Well because right now, she's doing the thing she loves most, with the one she loves most.
~~~

Soul wasn't a fan of cars, he preferred the free feeling of the wind in his white hair as he soared down the streets on his motorcycle. He'd rather zip past traffic and laugh as the adrenaline rush took over. And he'd much rather have the feeling of his meister's small arms wrapped around his middle, holding on for dear life.

He loved feeling her fast heartbeat on his back as they ride from mission to mission together. The feeling he got when he looked in his mirror and saw Maka's face, grinning with excitement of the ride, was indescribable.

But he knew of her love for car rides, and there was nothing better than seeing her at her happiest, and so, at one in the morning one day, Soul's plan to confess was born.

Two months after said plan was conceived, he and the beautiful, green eyed girl were sitting in a nice convertible with the roof down. Soul had to give himself a pat on the back when he saw Maka's face go from excited to ecstatic as she saw car he had 'rented' for their 'spontaneous' trip, with the roof already down. You see, he didn't rent this car, he owned it. A few years back Maka ranted to him about how she thought he should get a car, they couldn't always ride the bike. It could get too cold, it could rain, anything could happen to where they'd need a car. So one day, he went out and bought a car he knew she'd love, but there was no place at the apartment for him to keep it, so he kept it at Kid's place as they never really needed to use a car.

Soul smiled fondly at the memory of her hugging him tightly when she was pulled out of her awestruck trance of the car. He had been so shocked that he didn't hug her back for a few seconds, before he hugged her back, blushing lightly. When she pulled away she asked him how he had gotten such a car, she had never seen one like that at the car rental place before. Soul had just chuckled and winked at her, saying he knew a guy, before grabbing her bag and walking to the car.

"You coming or what?" He'd asked as he put her bag in the back, beg side his. She stood there for a moment before grinning and running to the car, calling "Shotgun!"

Soul chuckled at the memory, that had been around twenty minutes ago, now, it was just him, the road, his plan, and the girl he loved.

~~~
Maka couldn't stop grinning. How could she? Soul had rented her dream car for this trip that he announced out of the blue. She was curious as to how he had obtained this amazing car, but at the moment, it didn't matter because she was driving down the road with the boy she couldn't help but love.
The drive was quiet so far, the silence was comfortable, as they never really needed to speak to each other to feel happy in their presence. After about twenty minutes of driving in a nice silence, Maka got an idea. She reached into the back and grabbed her bag, quickly rummaging through it for a specific object.
"What cha' doing there Maka?" Soul asked, glancing off the road for a second to look at her curiously.
"You'll see." Maka grinned as she continued her search, soon letting out a cry of victory as she found what she was looking for. "Aha! Found it!" She said and held up a small object.
Soul glanced over at her and looked at the object in her hand. After realizing what it was he pointed to the radio.
"There's a cord there, plug it in." He said and Maka nodded. Moments later Maka had her iPod plugged into the speakers and the meister and weapon pair were soon singing loudly to their favorite playlist together.
"You're a troublemaker, you're a troublemaker... You ain't nothing but a troublemaker, girl." Soul sang the part as he drove, grinning widely.
"You had me hooked again from the minute you sat down
The way you bite your lip got my head spinnin' around," Maka sang next, quickly getting into one of her favorite songs.
"After a drink or two I was putty in your hands
I don't know if I have the strength to stand, oh oh oh..." Soul sang the next part.
"Trouble troublemaker, yeah
That's your middle name, oh oh oh...
I know you're no good but you're stuck in my brain, and I wanna know..." Maka grinned as she sang, her favorite part was coming up. And as the next chorus began, crimson met emerald as two pair of eyes met.
"Why does it feel so good but hurt so bad, oh oh oh?
My mind keeps saying,
"Run as fast as you can."
I say, "I'm done," but then you pull me back, oh oh oh...
I swear you're giving me a heart attack
Troublemaker!" Soul and Maka belted out the line loudly together and acted out the actions Olly Murs was singing about. They pretended they were running, Maka leaned away from Soul and he pulled her by the arm, and both threw a hand over their heart as they threw their heads back and practically screamed the word 'heart attack.'
"It's like you're always there in the corners of my mind. I see your silhouette every time I close my eyes," Soul sang as he drove, and Maka danced in her seat, putting her hand over her eyes and and drawing it away to reveal her closed ones, in sync with the song, singing along as well. At this point, neither of them could stop singing.
"There must be poison in those finger tips of yours, 'cause I keep comin' back again for more, oh oh oh..." As they sang, Maka was getting very into the song, but Soul was more interested in watching her childlike actions, something their friends almost never got to see.
"Trouble troublemaker, yeah
That's your middle name, oh oh oh...
I know you're no good but you're stuck in my brain, and I wanna know..." The pair weren't able to sing past the middle name part of the line as they were laughing at each other. At the exact same time, Soul and Maka had pointed at each other as they sang, and accidentally poked each other's noses. But their laughed soon stopped as the chorus began again.
"Why does it feel so good but hurt so bad, oh oh oh?
My mind keeps saying,
"Run as fast as you can."
I say, "I'm done," but then you pull me back, oh oh oh...
I swear you're giving me a heart attack
Troublemaker, Why does it feel so good but hurt so bad, oh oh (hurt so bad)?
My mind keeps saying,
"Run as fast as you can."
Troublemaker
I say, "I'm done," but then you pull me back, oh oh oh...
I swear you're giving me a heart attack
Troublemaker." The pair grinned as they sang, their favorite part was coming up.
"Maybe I'm insane
'Cause I keep doing the same damn thing
Thinking one day we gon' change
But you know just how to work that back
And make me forget my name
What the hell you do I won't remember
I'll be gone until November
And you'll show up again next summer, yeah!" At the last part they each pointed to themselves, then pointed at each other, practically yelling the last part.
"Typical middle name is Prada
Fit you like a glove, girl
I'm sick of the drama
You're a troublemaker
But damn girl it's like I love the trouble
And I can't even explain why
(Yeah!)" As the line finished both Soul and Maka went all out for the last two times they sang the chorus.
"Why does it feel so good but hurt so bad, oh oh oh?
My mind keeps saying,
"Run as fast as you can."
Troublemaker
I say, "I'm done," but then you pull me back, oh oh oh...
I swear you're giving me a heart attack
Troublemaker, why does it feel so good but hurt so bad, oh oh oh?
(And I can't even explain why)
My mind keeps saying,
"Run as fast as you can."
Troublemaker
I say, "I'm done," but then you pull me back, oh oh oh...
I swear you're giving me a heart attack
Troublemaker!" As the song finished Soul and Maka laughed happily at the mini concert they were having. And so, the weapon and meister pair continued down the open road, singing as loudly and goofily as they pleased, because there was no one to judge them there except each other.
---
Maka smiled softly, she and Soul had been driving for hours on an open road. The sky had finally faded from a light blue, to a dark purpleish black. She rested her head on her arms as she watched the open road flash by, humming a song under her breath. Her and Soul's mini concert had ended long ago, and the pair where silent as they listened to some quiet music, perfect for a drive. Maka propped her head up on her right hand and closed her green eyes, fatigue had suddenly overwhelmed her and before she knew it she was snoring softly in the passenger seat with Soul driving beside her.
~~~

Soul was incredibly nervous. As they drove they got closer and closer to their destination, the closer they got to the place where Soul's plans would take place. He glanced at Maka, and as uncool as it sounds, his heart melted. She was sleeping peacefully, her head resting on her hand, and a small smile on her lips as she dreamt. Soul chuckled at himself, he couldn't believe this girl could make him feel this way. He knew the day they met that she was gonna change him, but he never imagined that it would be because he would fall helplessly in love with her. There's not a thing he wouldn't do for Maka Albarn, Soul would gladly give his life up if it meant she would live another day. Of course he would, she is his meister after all, but she is also his best friend, and the one who captured his cool heart. Soul sighed and looked at the road, he could only hope she felt the same, well, that is why he planned this. He had decided that this day would be the day that he learned if Maka shared his feelings, and although he might fail, what better day to announce his feelings to the girl he loved than today?

The day he and Maka had first met and became partners.....

~~~
"—aka, Maaaka, wake up." A soft voice said, and Maka's green eyes fluttered open.
"Hm?" She mumbled as she lifted her head, she looked around at her surroundings before she was met with familiar red eyes. "Soul? Where are we?" She asks, sleep still evident in her voice.
"Oh, no where special." Soul replies with a small smile. "Now hop on out, I wanna show you something." He says and steps out of the car.
Maka nodded and unbuckled her seatbelt slowly, a yawn escaping her as she did show. What time is it? Where are they? What is Soul going to show her? She opened her car door and stepped out, she locked her fingers and raised her arms over her head in a stretch, arching her back as well. Maka let out another yawn and blinked, she looked around and was shocked to see the picnic was already laid out on a small hill. She smiled when she saw they where set up under a tree.
"Wow, beautiful spot." She breathed, and took a step forward.
"Yeah, I figured you'd like it," Soul smiles. "Now let's get up there, I'm starving." He says as both their stomachs let out growls.
The weapon-meister pair laugh at the coincidence, and Maka's green eyes sparkle with mischief. "Race you!" She exclaims and makes a dash for their picnic, laughing like a child.
"Hey! No head starts!" He exclaims and races after her. Maka naturally reached the top first and laughed triumphantly.
"I win!" She exclaimed with joy as Soul approached the top.
"No fair! You cheated!" He exclaimed.
"I did not! I just started without telling you!" Maka laughed.
"Did to! And I don't like cheaters, so you need to be punished!" Soul exclaimed and tackled Maka from behind, earning a squeal from the green eyed girl.
"Hey! Soul! Stop!" Maka laughs as he tickles her sides after he'd pinned her to the ground.
"Not gonna happen!'' Soul replies and continues what Maka refers to as 'tickle torture.'
"I—can't—breath!" Maka gasps between bouts of laughter, and at this Soul lets up his attack of tickles.
"That's what you get for cheating, Maka Albarn," he says smugly. Maka rolls her eyes in reply. "Well now that that's done, lets go eat." Soul says and begins to stand, when he was on his feet he held out a hand to help her up.
"Alright," Maka smiles and takes his hand, pulling herself up. Without letting go of Soul's hand, Maka rushed to their small picnic under the tree, eager to eat.
~~~

Soul is an idiot. How could he have not realized he was on top of her?! Ugh, why didn't he realize how wrong that could have looked to an outsider? It's a good thing Soul had chosen a very desolate place, they shouldn't expect any unwanted visitors. He was pulled out of his thoughts when Maka dragged him to the picnic. His heart immediately sped up, it's time, he's plans are about to be put into action. They reached the blanket and Soul took a breath, You can do it Soul, he thought. You got it, just be cool. He and Maka sat on the blanket and Maka began pulling out food.

"Mmm, it smells like Tsubaki's cooking." She says, Soul smiled. Even her nose was smart. Tsubaki had helped him plan this whole thing, she claimed she was a 'Soma' shipper, whatever the hell that was, (she's obviously been spending too much time with Liz) and said she'd love to help. So over the past few months he and Tsubaki had been working on finding the perfect place, day, and even another surprise. The coincidence was perfect, they had taken it as a sign and made sure that he could do this tonight. Tsubaki had also made the food for them, all of Maka and his favorites of course. Soul wanted this to be a night even better than cool, and Tsubaki was more than happy to help. He was once again pulled out of his thoughts by Maka. She had finished pulling out the food and was already making the plates.

"Hey, don't do everything yourself. Let me make the plates," he says and takes a the plate and spoon out of Maka;s hand before she could protest. Maka huffed and crossed her arms.

"I could have done that you know."

"Yes, I know you're a big girl and are capable of making your own plate. But since I dragged you out here it'd be uncool of me to make you do all the work." Soul replied simply as he piled some pasta on her plate. "Parmesan right?" He asks as he holds up the cheese before putting it on her food.

"Of course," Maka said. "What else could you have on pasta?"

"Just double checking," he said and poured some on her plate before doing the same to his own. "Alright, here you go."

"Thank you," Maka chirps as she takes her plate from him. As she looked down at her food she raised a suspicious eyebrow at Soul. "You know, for a last minute trip, I'm surprised you were able to bring pasta, no less my favorite." She says with a knowing grin. "I mean, I know we just didn't have some cooked bowtie pasta and some Pesto sauce just lying around."

Soul shook his head a smiled. "I wondered how long it would take you." He said before looking up. "Ok, so this trip may have not been as last minute as I'm letting on."

"Oh?" Maka chuckled. "And how 'last minute' was this?" She questioned, her emerald eyes sparkling with curiosity and amusement.

"Only about two months..." Soul mumbled.

Maka's eyes grew wide. "Two months? Soul, what could be so important that you'd plan for two months?" She asked in shock.

"You." He said simply, a light blush dancing across his cheeks. "I uh, well I didn't know if you had been planning anything for today and well, I wanted to do something special."

"Why?"

"Two years."

"Huh?"

"Two years. Two years ago today I met you and played the piano for you. Today's the anniversary of when we first met." He explained, his cheeks going a bright red, visible even in the dim light of twilight.

~~~
Maka sat there for a moment, shocked to silence. She knew of the importance of this day, but she never would have thought Soul would. And two months in advance no less.
"Soul..." she breathes, looking at her beloved partner. "I..." She continues, then let's out chuckle. "Thank you." She laughs. "Thank you." She says again, this time, choking up slightly.
Soul looked up at her. Maka met his eyes and smiled. "Thank you, Soul, this means a lot." She says, tears of happiness slowly falling down her cheeks. Soul scoots over and hugs her.
"Of course Maka, this is a really important day for me. I can't imagine not knowing you, my life wouldn't be as cool without the coolest partner ever." He smiles, earning a laugh from the delicate girl beside him.
"Same here." She says, hugging him back.
The two sit there for a moment, just enjoying the embrace as long as they could. Maka's emerald eyes shut as she sat in her partners warm arms, she breathed a content puff of air from her nose, a small smile on her face.
"I'm really glad you did this Soul, it's nice." She says, wrapping her arms tighter around him.
"Me to," Soul replies, a moment later Maka feels him take a deep breath. "Hey, Maka?" He asks and pulls away from the hug. "Can I tell you something?"
"Of course Soul, what's up?" Maka replies, looking at him curiously.
Soul took another deep breath before speaking. "So, there was another reason I brought you out here tonight," he began. "From the day I met you, I knew you were gonna be very special to me. I knew that because of you, I was gonna change, as well as my life. But I never knew how willing I would be to do just about anything for you. Maka, I'd gladly give up my life for you because you deserve to live as long and as happily as possible. And I know that that's a thing weapons do for their meister's, but it's more for me. Of course as your weapon I'd do anything for you, but it goes deeper than that. Maka, I wish you could know how deep my feelings are for you, you're my best friend, but you're also so much more than that. I know that things may become awkward now, but I can't stand this anymore. It's so uncool to keep pretending I don't feel this way, but I do. You make me crazy. You annoy the crap out of me with all your studying. I can only dream you would stop Maka Chopping me. I wish you would get your nose out of your book and realize that I love you Maka. You're so amazing, you're beautiful, you're kind, you're an absolutely amazing warrior, and you make me act incredibly uncool. Like right now, I know I'm not one to spill all my feelings, but I can't help it. I don't care how uncool I look because of it, because if you think I'm cool, then I'm perfectly ok with it. So, I know that this is a lot to take in, and I know you may not return my feelings. But as long as we can stay friends, I'm fine with it. I just needed to let you know how I truly feel about you Maka."
Maka was shocked.
She could not believe what she just heard. Soul, loved her? He thinks she's amazing? He returned her feelings?
She blinked slowly, her emerald eyes looking into his sincere crimson ones. For once she was at a loss for words. How do you respond to that? The guy you've loved for two years, decides to admit his feelings for you on the anniversary of when you two met? Who does that happen to?
Maka Albarn apparently.
She looked at him, clearly shocked. What was she supposed to say? After what felt like an eternity, she managed to speak.
"You... love me?"
~~~

Soul couldn't help but smile at the girl before him. He had a feeling she'd be shocked.

"Yes, I do. For quite a while actually."

"I..."

"You don't have to respond, I know it might be kinda awkward, but—" he was cut off when she crushed him in a hug, wrapping her delicate arms around his neck and burying her face in his neck.

"I love you too," she said, causing Soul's heart to stop.

She loved him.

Soul couldn't help but laugh as he wrapped his arms around her small waist. She loved him. His crimson eyes closed as he laughed a bright, happy laugh. He just couldn't grasp it.

"What's so funny? I don't think cool guys laugh when a girl tells them that they love them." Maka teases as she pulls away from the hug, a smile drawn across her lips.

"True, I'm pretty sure the cool thing to do would be to kiss you, but instead I'm laughing because I'm freaking happy." Soul grins.

"Well, I think we can make an exception this time."

"I dunno, I kinda wanted to kiss you."

"Then why don't you?"

Taking the invitation Soul immediately cupped her face in his hands and pressed his lips to hers.

~~~~
After who knows how long, they pulled away from the kiss, smiles on both their faces. Neither weapon or meister spoke for a moment, there were no words to be spoken. Then, the team continued their meal, talking like they normally would. They teased each other, bickered about things, and enjoyed each other's company. But this time, there was more. There were openly loving stares from Soul as his beloved meister ranted and fangirled over a series. There were giggles and kisses on the cheek from Maka whenever her stupidly cute weapon did or said something funny or sweet.
As the night went on, the occasional car that would pass by would see two teenagers, happily enjoying each other's company. They'd see one of the DWMA's most powerful weapon-meister pair, playing tag, catching fireflies, looking for constellations, and being the couple that everyone knew they'd be.
But what they didn't see, was the excitement in the green eyed meister's eyes as she saw the dark night sky light up with the largest storm of shooting stars she'd ever seen. And they definitely didn't see her tackle her smug partner in a hug that knocked them to the ground, or the kiss she gave him because she got to see an amazing sight with the boy she loved.
That's a wrap folks! I hope you guys enjoyed Roadside Romance. I sure did, writing this was insanely fun and I'm really proud of the outcome. I've been working on this for a while now and I'm so happy it's finally done. I'm pretty sure the idea for this came at like one in the morning, just like Soul's plan.
Oh, and I know they may seem a bit ooc towards the end, but to be honest most people act a bit ooc when they're in love. Especially
when they just found out they both love each other.
So you know how I feel about it, but how do you guys feel about it? Did you guys love it? Hate it? In between it? I don't know! I'm not you guys! Let me know with a little comment and tell me how I did and your opinions on the chapter.
Yeah, I guess that's it. Maybe I'll do a part two where the group finds out and stuff. Maybe I'll put Spirit in there and give you guys his reaction. That would actually be very fun to write. Let me know if you guys would like to see either of those.
So yeah, I guess I'll see you guys around. Bye! Thanks for reading!!
{Disclaimer: I do not own "Soul Eater," both the anime and manga belong to Atsushi Ōkubo. I am not him, I am simply a 15 year old fangirl who writes fanfiction in her free time. I do not own the song "Troublemaker" either. That is owned by Olly Murs, and I am not him either, although I do sing. Also, I don't own that wonderful MEP in the little thingamabob. That was made by the lovely owners of the YouTube channel xXShibusenAcademyXx. If you haven't already, go watch their video because it's freaking amazing!}
[To my editor person meganjm13, I'm sorry I posted this before you could edit it, but I was just too excited I finally finished it! You can yell at me later.]
