Chapter Twenty-Four - Angel Madness
Once they'd got Sam settled back in his room, Dean finally showed up with a short, dark haired woman, her face decorated with a smug smirk.
"Who the Hell is this?" Elizabeth asked, gesturing to the woman.
"Meg." The woman's smoothed, dulled voice slithered to the Vampire's ears like honey. "Demon."
Elizabeth visibly stiffened.
"It's fine. She's with us." Dean clarified.
"We're consorting with Demons now?" Elizabeth cocked a brow.
"Says the Vampire who's best buds with the king of Hell." Meg scoffed, earning a questioning look from the woman in front of her. "Oh yeah, Crowley's been talking about you since before he was even a Crossroads Demons. You're his favourite non-Human."
"I'm flattered." Elizabeth mumbled, turning back to Castiel, who was watching Sam from his doorway. "Pigeon's mojo didn't work."
Dean sighed.
"Great... I'll go talk to him." He said, wandering over.
"So, you and the big one, huh?" Meg smirked.
"Are you really here to help?" Elizabeth asked, ignoring her comment.
The Demon shrugged.
"I'm not exactly Crowley's favourite Demon right now, so I thought I'd take my business a more entertaining route."
Elizabeth all but snarled at her.
"Sam is not here for your entertainment. If that's the only reason you're here then I'll gladly acquaint your arse with my foot and show you the exit."
Meg put her hands up in defence, taking a step back.
"Alright, alright. I was in the neighbourhood. Sam's condition just happened to be a coincidental thing." She said.
Elizabeth sighed heavily, pinching the bridge of her nose.
"If you want to make yourself useful, tell me why all those Demons were here."
Meg chuckled, looking down at her feet.
"No one knows. It's like they were all just wondering around Hell one day and then just got the urge to go annoy some Winchesters." She shrugged.
"That's it?" Elizabeth frowned sceptically.
"As far as I know." Meg nodded.
Elizabeth thought for a moment. Perhaps it has something to do with the Leviathan and their oncoming attack... The Vampire seriously hoped that wasn't the case. If it was, that would mean the Leviathan had some sort of power over the Demons that the Winchesters were previously unaware of. Either that or they just happened to misplace that information when relaying their activities back to Elizabeth to catch her up after she'd come back from solo hunting.
"Cas has an idea." Dean announced, walking over to the pair.
"It'd better be better than his last one." Elizabeth growled.
Dean beckoned them over to the doorway of Sam's room.
"Now, Sam, this may hurt." Cas said, sitting on the edge of the Winchester's bed. "And if I never get to tell you again, I'm sorry I did this to you."
He placed his palm on Sam's forehead, igniting a red glow behind his eyes, accentuating all of the veins and nerves under his skin.
"What the Hell is he doing?" Elizabeth shrieked, going to run into the room, but Dean and Meg grabbed her, holding her back.
Dean's strength was no problem, but Meg gripped her arm like a vice and refused to let go.
Crimson vines began to trail up Castiel's arm under the skin, moving quickly up under his trench coat. They led up his neck, his face, finishing at his eyes, turning them a bright red.
They soon began to disappear, following the route they'd appeared in.
As he let go of Sam's forehead, the younger brother gasped out, wide eyed, his hands flying up by his pillow.
That was when Meg released Elizabeth.
The Vampire shot to Sam's side, taking his hand.
"What the Hell have you done?" She demanded, looking to the Angel, who looked more than a little worn.
"Sam?" Dean's voice dripped with concern as he jogged over to the other side of Sam's bed.
The younger brother shot up, adjusting his position so that he could still rest his back on the head board.
"'Liza! Dean!" He gasped out, looking to Castiel. "Cas... Cas is that you?"
Castiel looked up at Sam with a horrified expression. He stood up and began to back away from the bed until his back hit the wall, earning equally confused expressions from everyone in the room. The Winchesters glanced to each other before turning back to the terrified Angel in front of them. He sunk down against the wall, panting heavily, all but rocking back and forth.
Elizabeth approached Sam and Dean in the hall after speaking with the doctor.
"I've told him that the electrotherapy worked and I've discharged you." She said, looking to Sam who was now back in his regular clothes. "I've also told him about his latest patient, instructing him to keep him under observation and to not give him any medication."
The boys nodded, turning to leave.
"Where's Meg?" Sam asked.
"No idea. She does that a lot." Dean shrugged.
"She said she wanted to help, so I've got her on a special assignment." Elizabeth stated, removing her lab coat to drape over her arm.
"What assignment?" The younger brother frowned.
"I've got her on Cas duty. So at least he's not here alone."
The brothers stopped walking to put their full attention on the Vampire.
"You must be joking." Dean said.
"No. She hates the other Demons about as much as we do and she seems to have a soft spot for him, so I thought 'why not', because frankly, rather her than me. The last thing I wanna be doing is babysitting the Pigeon at the best of times, let alone when his brain's all fried." She replied with a lazy shrug.
"And there I almost thought that you were starting to go soft on him." Sam chuckled.
"Hell hasn't frozen over just yet, darling." Elizabeth smirked.
"I dunno... I mean we can't just leave him." Sam said as they exited the hospital. "I'm not sure how I feel about him being there with no one except Meg."
"Well, we can't bring him with us." Dean countered. "Everything on the planet's out for us, okay? Word gets out, we can't protect him. Not really. This is safer. Every Demon who knows about Cas is dead."
"Except for Meg." Elizabeth pointed out.
Dean waved a dismissive hand in her direction.
"Dean, look. This whole 'enemy of my enemy is my friend' thing feels kinda like a Demon deal." Sam sighed, resting his hands on the roof of Elizabeth's car.
"It's not a Demon deal." Dean almost interrupted.
"So, what?" Sam shrugged.
Dean didn't really know how to answer. Sam and Elizabeth could practically see the cogs turning in his brain as he thought of a relevant retort.
"Mutually assured destruction." He finally said.
"Great." Elizabeth scoffed. "As if this whole Leviathan and now Demon thing wasn't freaky enough, everything's cool because we're probably gunna end up dead anyway. But hey, at least it's 'mutually assured'. Nothing quite like being thorough about it."
"Look, guys. I get it. Meg's not our friend. We don't even have friends. All our friends are dead." Dean told his brother as he opened the driver's side door.
"Not all your friends." Elizabeth cocked an eyebrow.
"I mean... Technically you're undead." Sam smirked.
"Touché." Elizabeth chuckled, holding out her hand to Dean.
Dean looked at the hand and sighed, handing over her car keys.
"You're family. It's different." He said, climbing into the back.
The vexing sound of Elizabeth's ringtone filled the air in Bobby's cabin. The Vampire woke up with a groan, leaning over to the bedside table to answer it.
"Elizabeth Smythe." She spoke, the sleepiness in her voice apparent.
"Elizabeth, its Diane Cleaver. We hunted a Shifter about a year ago?" The woman on the other end said in her thick Louisiana accent.
Elizabeth sat up, rubbing the sleep from her eyes.
"Oh... Yes, I remember. How can I help you, Diane?"
"There seems to have been a spike in Demon activity recently. I was wondering if that was just where I am or if you'd encountered anything similar. I'm contacting all of the Hunters in my address book to see if I can't find a pattern." The Huntress replied.
Elizabeth sighed, knowing full well the real reason the Demons were acting up. She pulled the blanket from her legs and climbed out of bed, going to the fridge for a blood bag. She looked around, wondering where the boys had got to.
"Honestly, it's been pretty bad here – here being Montana. You should probably be aware that this is down to the Leviathan." The Vampire explained, taking a sip straight from the blood bag since Dean wasn't there to get weird about it.
"Leviathan? Don't think I've heard of them." Elizabeth could hear the frown in Diane's voice.
"God's first borns. It's a long story. Do you need me for anything?" The Vampire mentally slapped herself. She'd got so caught up in the world of the Winchesters and their Hell, she'd forgotten that not everyone was in the loop.
"Wow... You have been busy." Diane let out a breathy chuckle of disbelief. "But yeah, I'd really appreciate it if you could spare a few days to help out down here. It's getting way out of hand. I could really use the bodies."
"Say no more. I'll be down as soon as I can. Text me the address." Elizabeth told her.
"Thanks, doll. You're a life saver."
The last time Elizabeth had set foot in the French Quarter of New Orleans had been almost a century ago. It was odd. Everything seemed so different, yet somehow still welcomingly familiar.
She stepped out of her Camaro outside of a Voodoo shop, the humid Louisiana air hitting her like a tidal wave. Her regular clothing choice of corset, leather pants and boots had been a bad idea, though, at least she'd had the sense to leave her coat in the car.
"Hey, doll! It's great to see you again." Diane exited the Voodoo shop with a African-American woman in tail.
Diane was a Witch by nature, but had become a Hunter after her coven had been slaughtered ten years previous. She was a woman in her forties, her greying brown hair fell over her shoulders. Her dress sense was rather bohemian – opting today for a pair of harem pants, a cream tank top and white lace vest that went down to her calves.
The woman next to her had a similar dress sense, only darker and paired with skinny jeans rather than harem pants. Her hair was covered by a purple silk scarf decorated with a black marble pattern. She looked to be in her late twenties.
"It's good to see you again too, Diane. Who's your friend?" Elizabeth smiled, hugging the Hunter.
"This is Marie Fontenot. She's a Voodoo practitioner I've been working with for a few years now. She's offered to help out this time as well." Diane replied.
"Hello." Marie smiled brightly, shaking the Vampire's hand.
As soon as their hands touched, Marie's smile faltered, her body tensing.
"I'm sorry." She said, pulling her hand away. "I was warned of your Vampirism, I just never expected it to feel like that."
"You sense it?" Elizabeth frowned, earning a nod from the woman.
"Not that I would've needed to. You're quite cold to the touch." Marie stated.
"Ah, yes. My boyfriend helps a little. He's like a walking radiator so we both feel like normal people after an hour or so in close proximity." Elizabeth chuckled, earning a laugh from the other two women.
"Shall we?" Diane motioned towards the shop.
"It's just a few Demons. If I end up needing assistance, I'll call, okay?" Elizabeth spoke into her phone.
"I know you can handle it... I just don't like that you left while we were gone." Sam sighed on the other end. "You promised you wouldn't do that again. After Samuel Colt, remember?"
"I know it was a bitch thing to do and I remember what I promised. But my friend sounded a bit panicked. I couldn't just wait around. I texted you yesterday before I left. Did you not get it?" Elizabeth frowned, taking a seat by the old fashioned cash register in the shop.
"I did. But... I don't know... Just come home soon. I feel like Dean's closing in on Dick Roman. If he is, this Leviathan thing is either gunna end or..."
"We'll put an end to this together. As soon as you think Dean's going to make a move, you call me if I'm not already back. Alright, my darling?" The Vampire gave a small smile, even though she was more than aware that he couldn't see.
"I will - promise. Stay safe." He mumbled. "Update me regularly."
"I will. See you soon, Sam."
"That the boyfriend you mentioned?" Marie asked, poking her head through the beads hanging from the doorway to the back room as the call ended.
"It was, indeed. He was a little stressed that I left in such a hurry without back-up, that's all." Elizabeth chuckled, sliding her phone into the back pocket of her leather pants.
"He's Human, yes?" Marie frowned, earning a nod from the Vampire. "I think he needs to remind himself sometimes that you aren't. You're much stronger than what he's used to - Vampire or not. I can tell - you have an aura about you I've never seen before. It's quite extraordinary."
"He has every reason to worry, in all fairness. But if anything, it should be me worrying about him. He's not long gone through a horrible ordeal that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy."
"Then why did you leave him to come here?" Marie asked, taking a few steps forward towards the shop counter.
"I'm a sucker for a friend in need." Elizabeth shrugged. "Or perhaps just a crisis in general. I suppose a part of me likes to feel wanted or needed."
"You're not used to having people who care about you." Marie observed.
Elizabeth shook her head.
"I've been something of a lone wolf for a couple of centuries now. I don't see why that should change all of a sudden, but it sort of has. I've found a makeshift family in those Winchester boys."
Marie visibly stiffened at the name.
"Winchester?" She queried, expressing a deep-set frown.
"Yes. You know them?" Elizabeth wondered.
Marie needed to sit down, taking a seat at the stool next to the one Elizabeth was sat on.
"They were in one of my visions. I didn't know who they were until now." The woman frowned.
"What did you see, Marie?" Elizabeth asked, placing her hands in hers.
Marie didn't answer for a few seconds, which only worried the Vampire more.
"I saw... An explosion." She finally said. "As black as night. And trees. Lots of trees. There were monsters – everywhere. You must be careful, Elizabeth. I fear you'll not like what's to come. You... And Dean and Castiel. It will be devastating. Especially for Sam."
Elizabeth spent the next few days wondering if she should tell the Winchesters about her new friend's vision. The fact that Marie had named the brothers and Cas was enough proof of her legitimacy and, if she'd managed to get those bits right, what else was she right about? All of it?
"Elizabeth?" Diane's voice interrupted her thoughts.
"Yes?" The Vampire perked up, realising she'd gone into a sort of trance by some of the shelves of herbs in the shop.
"We're heading out. There have been reports of activity by NOLA PD - sounds like Demons." The woman said.
"Okay. What's the plan of attack?" Elizabeth asked as Marie came out from the back room.
"I have a few useful spells up my sleeve." She spoke up.
"Other than that, it's a usual exorcism procedure." Diane finished.
Elizabeth almost recoiled. With all the new toys the Angels had less-than-allowed her to procure; she'd all but forgotten the days of a simple exorcism job.
"Come out here." She smirked, leading them out of the shop to her car.
She opened the Camaro's trunk and lifted the cover, revealing all of her Hunter's toys and trinkets, opting to grab a few Angel blades.
"What are they?" Diane frowned as the Vampire handed her one.
"This," Elizabeth started, looking almost proud that she'd be the one to introduce her Hunter friends to such a weapon. "Is and Angel blade. It'll kill most things you come across, including Demons and Angels alike. I have a few, so feel free to keep that one."
