Chapter Thirty-Five - Vampire's Connection
"I've got you a present, Flower." Alexander smiled, walking into his drawing room.
A fourteen year old looking Eden smiled, turning around in her chair by the fire.
In his arms, was a young woman, out cold. She looked about nineteen or so.
"For me?" Eden smiled brightly, moving over to him as he put the girl on a nearby loveseat.
She knelt down at the sleeping woman's side, stroking the long, golden hair from her angelic face.
"I thought having someone to keep around and feed from as you please would better suit you. We don't want you being found out, now, do we?" Alexander smiled down at her, crouching by her side.
Eden shook her head.
"Thank you, Alexander." She said, leaning in to hug him.
"Elizabeth?" Dean frowned, snapping his fingers a few inches from her face.
"Elizabeth." Sam repeated with a voice of concern, placing a hand on her shoulder.
The Vampire blinked, looking up at them both.
"Are you okay?" Jody asked.
"Yeah... Yeah, I'm fine." Elizabeth nodded a little too quickly to be convincing. "I just... Need some air."
Elizabeth was sat outside on the steps up to the main entrance of the Police Department.
Sam exited the building. Seeing her hunched down with her head in her hands broke his heart.
He was starting to second guess his decision to go and find out what was wrong. But seeing her like that only made his feet move forward without his permission. He needed to make sure she was okay.
"Elizabeth?" He called out gently.
"Go away, Sam." She mumbled, not even bothering to look up at him.
"I can't do that, 'Liza." He said, sitting down next to her. "I need to know you're okay. What happened back there?"
Elizabeth was in the least appropriate mood to sit there arguing with him, so she sighed and lifted her head.
"I had another dream... Thing."
Sam frowned.
"But you were awake..."
Elizabeth looked over at him like he just said the most stupid thing ever to be vocalised.
"I'm aware." She scoffed. "I have a feeling these are going to become a regular thing..."
"What happened in it?" He asked.
Elizabeth let out another deep sigh, leaning back and resting her elbows on the steps behind her.
"Alexander gave Eden a girl as a gift. To feed on whenever she wanted so that they could keep a low profile." She told him.
"Sounds like the case is triggering these images. Are you sure you want to carry on? We can handle it on our own, if not." Sam told her.
Elizabeth shook her head.
"No, I'm fine. If anything, it makes me want to sort this out all the more. If these dreams are memories and I'm actually Eden, then I did what those Vampires did to the girl in there. I need to make this right for her." She said.
Sam thought for a moment, understanding her reasoning.
"Okay." He finally nodded.
"Thank you." Elizabeth muttered, looking down at her boots. "For listening."
"Any time." Sam smiled.
"You good?" Dean asked, vacating the interrogation room as Sam and Elizabeth walked up. The Vampire nodded. "Good, because I'm not getting anywhere with Alex. I'm thinking maybe she'll respond better to a species she's been around for the better part of a decade." He threw a thumb behind him, motioning to the terrified girl in the room he'd left.
Elizabeth frowned as she thought about what he said, but when it hit her, her eyes widened.
"You want me to go in there? I think I'd be more use helping you find your marbles, because you've clearly lost them. She'll freak when she sees me." She hissed, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Yeah, Dean... Are you sure?" Sam's brows knitted together. "I don't think she's-"
"Yeah, I'm sure. She ran away from the nest, but that doesn't mean she'll stop protecting them, even if it means they kill her when they find her - at least, that's what she's saying's gunna happen." The older brother shrugged.
"I think Dean's right." Jody said, walking over. "She's been so invested in the Vampires for so long, I think using a Vampire is gunna be the only way to get through to her."
Elizabeth sighed, looking over at the girl through the blinds at the window.
"Fine... I'll try."
As she walked in, closing the door behind her, Sam turned to them.
"I was going to say, I don't think this is a good idea because she had another vision - triggered by Alex's status within the nest." He whispered.
"Why didn't you shut me up?!" Dean hissed, moving towards the interrogation room door.
"Elizabeth's been having visions?" Jody frowned, earning a nod from the younger brother.
"'Liza!" Dean huffed. "She's locked the damn door."
"Hi. Alex, right?" Elizabeth gave a small smile as she closed the door, twisting the lock.
"What are you doing?" Alex frowned.
"Giving us a little privacy so we can talk." The Vampire told her, moving around the table to sit down opposite her.
Dean appeared at the window, trying to get in. He banged his fist on the glass with a look concern on his face.
Elizabeth held up a finger in response.
"Unlike those boys out there, or Sheriff Mills, I actually have some idea of what you've been through."
"I doubt that." Alex scoffed, rolling her eyes as she looked anywhere in the room but at the woman in front of her.
"Probably not from your perspective, no." Elizabeth shrugged, parting her lips to reveal her fangs.
Alex freaked. She gasped, trying to fast to climb out of her chair that she almost fell off it, but she was handcuffed to the desk.
"It's okay. It's alright. I won't hurt you. I don't make a habit out of feeding on Humans. Not directly, anyway. I'm a Hunter first and foremost." Elizabeth reassured her.
Alex stopped her movements, the look of horror still prioritised by her face.
"You're not like the others..." She stated. "Your fangs, they're... Different."
"Yes, they are." Elizabeth smiled. "I just want to talk to you. Then, maybe I can help you."
Alex shook her head.
"You can't help me. If momma finds me, she'll kill me."
"Like I say, I'm a Hunter first and foremost. So if she finds you, I'll make sure she has to go through me before she gets to you." Elizabeth promised. "What makes you think she's going to kill you, anyway? From what I've heard, you're a very close knit family. Why would she want to hurt you?"
"Because I ran away and got Cody killed." The girl mumbled.
"Cody?" Elizabeth frowned.
"My brother. The one Sheriff Mills... Took care of." Alex shrunk down in her chair, her voice turning small.
Elizabeth frowned.
"I see... Are you sad about your brother's death?"
Alex shrugged.
"He brought it on himself by following me."
"Would you be upset if something happened to another one or the rest of your family?" Elizabeth cocked an eyebrow.
The girl shrugged again.
"Like I said, Alex. I'll protect you if you'll let me. Me, Sheriff Mills and the boys. We'll all look after you. Just say the word."
Alex's eyes filled up to the waterline.
"I don't wanna go back there." She whispered.
Elizabeth gave a small smile.
"Okay." She said. "I'll be back in a minute, alright?"
Alex nodded, wiping away her tears before any spilled over.
Elizabeth walked back over to the door, flicking the lock.
"Are you insane? The Hell did you lock the door for?" Dean hissed as she closed the door behind her.
"To establish some trust. I needed to know that we weren't to be interrupted, even though you could see us. She knows what I am, she knows I'm different to the nest. She's said she'll accept our help." Elizabeth explained.
Sam looked at her with something that could only be perceived as pride.
"Good job." Jody smiled, resting a hand on her shoulder.
"Did you three have fun talking about my Eden problem?" Elizabeth cocked a brow.
Dean cleared his throat awkwardly.
"Uh, I wouldn't exactly call it 'fun', but we've talked about it, yeah. Jody was feeling a little out of the loop." He said.
"I hope you don't mind." Jody gave a small smile. "I was just worried about you."
Elizabeth shrugged.
"I'm dealing."
"Hm, yeah, 'Lizabeth, I've seen people 'dealing' and they never included zoning out in the middle of a case and walking out." Jody looked sceptical.
"I said I'm dealing with it. Please, just... Leave me to it." Elizabeth groaned, walking off towards the restroom.
"Yeah, she ain't dealing." Dean sighed as the three watched her walk away.
"Do you think Alex will at least give her something to focus on?" Sam asked.
"That..." Dean began, sighing again. "Or, it'll make everything a thousand times worse."
Elizabeth glared at herself in the mirror, her face below her eyes dripping with cold water.
"Get it together, idiot." She grumbled, leaning her hands on either side of the sink. "You've dealt with worse... Probably."
Her thoughts were interrupted by the faint sound of the Impala engine firing up outside.
Elizabeth ran to the restroom door, flinging the door open and looking around.
She saw Jody moving towards the interrogation room with her car keys in hand.
The Vampire jogged after her, calling her name.
The Sheriff stopped and seemed to take a breath of relief.
"Are you okay?" She asked.
"I will be when that stops being the go-to question to ask me." Elizabeth huffed. "Where'd the boys go?"
"They're going to Nebraska to try and track down the nest." Jody replied. "You and me are taking Alex to my cabin to keep her safe."
"They went to go take down a whole Vamp's nest..." Elizabeth replied in monotone. "And they didn't invite me... The most qualified person for the job."
Jody gave an awkward smile.
"We kinda thought it best if you stick to Alex duty with me. You seem to have established some sort of trust with her, plus we could use you as a last line of defence." She said.
"In other words, they thought I'd trip out and get myself killed." The Vampire sighed. "Awesome..."
"We're just worried about you, Elizabeth..." Jody rubbed the girl's upper arm comfortingly. "But still, what I said was true. You have established a connection with Alex that she seems open to and I could use your help."
Elizabeth huffed.
"Fine."
"What? Too rustic for your taste?" Jody asked Alex, who looked at the moonlit cabin with bored eyes. "Well, I have a lot of great memories. Used to come up here all the time. First as a kid with my parents and then with my... Anyhow, it's a lot nicer than it looks from the outside."
She quickly changed the subject, remembering her late husband and son, then got out of the patrol car, letting Elizabeth out of the back seat.
She then moved around the car to let Alex out before uncuffing her.
"FYI, the woods around here? Really easy to get lost in if you don't know your way around." The Sheriff continued, making her way towards the cabin. "Me, I know 'em like the back of my hand. So does Elizabeth - Lord knows she's spent enough time playing hide and seek with my officers out here over the years."
Elizabeth released a sharp exhale through her nose, passing it off as a reminiscent chuckle.
"I got it. Don't try running, you won't get far." Alex sighed dismissively.
The inside of the cabin was nice. A spacious, open kitchen area, large, cosy living area complete with fireplace, a couple of bedrooms and a bathroom all on a single floor.
Elizabeth helped Jody unpack the groceries as Alex wandered lazily around the living area.
"You know this doesn't work, right?" Alex asked, causing the women's heads to turn. She was holding a crucifix she'd found hung up on the wall. "From Vampires? It's useless."
"Believe me, I've had my moments pointing and laughing at those who thought they did." Elizabeth smirked to the Sheriff.
"That's not why I have it." Jody replied, watching as the girl walked towards a few picture frames decorating the top of a dresser.
"This your family?" Alex asked as the woman walked over, picking up one of the photo frames.
"Yes." She replied, simply.
"Where are they?" Alex looked up at her, earning a saddened, almost vacant look. "Oh, dead." She sighed in her typical bored tone.
Elizabeth recalled Jody telling her how they died the last time they saw each other, so, deciding this particular conversation was none of her business, continued to put the groceries away.
Jody snatched the photo frame from the girl.
"You know, there are about a thousand more polite ways you could say that." Jody mumbled. "I'll give you a pass on account of the whole 'raised by monsters' thing." She placed the photo back where it came from.
"How'd they die?" Alex asked.
"Horribly." Jody practically whispered, moving to put the crucifix back on the room divider.
"You okay?" Elizabeth kept her voice low.
Jody gave a nod, wiping away a loose tear before turning back to Alex.
"You must be exhausted. I know for a fact you didn't sleep last night." She said.
"I'm fine." Alex replied, sitting down on the couch.
"It's no problem. I can make up a bed." Jody told her.
"I'm fine." The girl repeated, sounding a little more tense this time.
"You need your sleep, Alex." Elizabeth sighed, moving into the living area. "We don't know what the next couple of days or even tonight is gunna bring. You may need your strength."
"No, no. It's okay. She says fine." Jody held out a hand, re-addressing the girl. "Suit yourself."
Elizabeth was watching Alex whilst Jody went to get some firewood. Until she got a text from Sam.
Impala 2: Alex was a lure. Keep an ear out. The family could be coming after you and Jody.
"Crap..." Elizabeth whispered.
"What is it?" Jody asked, coming in with armfuls of wood blocks.
Elizabeth walked over, switching her phone for the wood to let Jody read it.
"Alex?" Jody called out, realising she wasn't in sight.
"She said she was going to bed. I set up one of the rooms for her." Elizabeth told her.
The women walked into Jody's son's old room, flicking on the light to see her laying on the bed, fast asleep.
Jody sighed, looking at the chalk board on the far side of the room.
Elizabeth went over to the bed, gently draping the blanket over Alex.
She woke up with a start.
"Woah!" Jody called out.
"It's fine, it's fine. It's just us." Elizabeth soothed, cupping the side of the girl's head in her cool hand. "It's Elizabeth and Jody. You're safe."
"Sorry... Sorry." The girl panted.
"It's alright." Jody said. "I made you a sandwich. It's out there if you want it."
Without any sign of a reply, the two women made their way back out of the room.
"Sheriff." Alex caught their attention. "My grandma?"
Jody glanced to Elizabeth, then at the girl, shaking her head.
"I'm so sorry." She uttered.
"No..." Alex shrugged. "It's fine. I figured, it's been years and she was old."
With that, she laid back down on the bed, facing the wall.
The Vampire and the Sheriff glanced between each other with solemn eyes, then made their way back out of the room, closing the door behind them.
Without getting a reply from Elizabeth, Dean called Jody several times.
Getting back into the room from talking with Alex, Jody noticed the missed calls, deciding to call him back.
"Jody?" Dean answered.
"Dean, we got the text, don't worry those pretty heads of yours." She chuckled, watching as Elizabeth went to the window, peeking out from behind the curtains.
"Listen to me. The Vamps knew that Alex went to Sioux Falls, okay? They're probably already there. We're on our way back now." Dean spoke. "But there's something else, there's something about Alex."
Elizabeth's head jolted in Jody's direction, headlights seeping through the curtains.
"We've got company." The Vampire said.
"It can wait." Jody said into the phone, moving to look for herself. "They're here."
"What?" Dean asked.
"At the cabin, now." Jody replied.
"We're on our way." Dean told her.
"Hurry." Jody sighed, locking the doors.
