Chapter Sixty-Four - Amelia
The trio had received a call from Castiel, telling them to get to Tulsa Memorial Hospital as Claire had been hurt.
Of course, they couldn't get on the road fast enough.
"Thanks for coming." He said as they got out of the Impala.
"Yeah, 'course." Sam replied.
"Look, Cas, I'm glad to help, but Claire and I aren't exactly on the best of terms. I mean, should I even be here?" Dean frowned.
"I need help from all three of you. You were all troubled teens - within reason." The Angel glanced to Elizabeth. "You speak her language."
"Alright. How is she?" Sam asked.
"I... Haven't gone in yet. I was waiting for back-up." Cas mumbled.
"Back-up..." Dean repeated, earning a smirk from Elizabeth. "Three men, a Vampire-ish and a lady. Let's do this."
"Do you guys want me to take the lead on this one? You guys aren't exactly teenage girl savvy." Elizabeth frowned.
"Probably best." Sam nodded.
"What are you doing here?" Claire asked as they entered her room. "And why the Hell did you bring him?"
"Awesome." Dean huffed.
"We're here to help." Elizabeth told her.
"The police found my number in your emergency contact list." Cas mumbled.
"Yeah, well. That was a mistake." Claire retorted. "You can go now."
"Claire... Why were you at a bar?" The Angel asked.
"So much for me taking the lead..." Elizabeth whispered to herself.
"I wasn't." The teen shook her head.
"Claire, what were you doing in an alley outside of a bar?" Sam elaborated.
"Wrong place, wrong time. Story of my life."
"Look, we're not leaving until you tell us whatever the Hell really happened." The younger brother pressed. "So if you want us gone... Talk."
"Maybe less of the third degree?" Elizabeth cocked a brow, leaning against the far wall with her arms crossed.
"What, are you coaching them through teenaged girl talk or something?" Claire scoffed.
"I was supposed to be the one doing the talking. But you know what these boys are like." The Vampire smirked.
Claire chuckled sarcastically.
"Unfortunately, yeah." She muttered.
The boys looked to Elizabeth in surprise that she'd even managed to crack some sort of a smile out of the girl.
'Told you.' She mouthed, pushing herself off the wall to approach the hospital bed.
"What happened? Maybe I can help. You know, got a couple of centuries worth of girl problems." She shrugged.
"How about mom problems?" Claire mumbled.
Elizabeth frowned, looking over to the boys.
"What about mum problems?" She asked.
"I was looking for her. I want to find my mom and... Tell her she ruined my life." The girl said.
"Your mom didn't-"
"She left me." Claire cut the Angel off. "And so did my dad. But Jimmy's gone, right? Has it easy up in Heaven. So... Mom's the only one left I can tell off."
"I think we all have a few choice words we could say to our mothers." Elizabeth chuckled.
"What did yours do?" Claire asked.
"Um... Lost me so that I could do God's bidding, just like you and your mom lost your dad, and decided to retaliate by creating every single monster species we hunt." Elizabeth sighed with a shrug.
The girl's eyes widened a bit.
"Jeez, I thought my family was messed up." She uttered.
"When's the last anybody heard from your mom?" Sam pressed.
"Um..." Claire started, leaning back to dig around in her bag to grab her journal. "When I was living with my grandmother, she used to send me postcards. This was the last one. I got it just before my grandma died - a few years ago. Nobody's heard from her since." She pulled out a card from Curtis' Motor Court. "It was sent from a motel here in town. That's where I've been crashing. I was at Susie's Bar looking for a loser named Ronnie Cartwright. Mom's diary said she was gunna meet him around the time she disappeared. Before he knocked me down, he remembered her name."
"Wait, he did this to you?" Elizabeth exclaimed, earning a nod from the teen. "I can't wait to meet him."
"He knows something." Claire told her.
"Why was Amelia looking for him?" Cas asked.
Claire leaned back to place her journal on the table next to her.
"She went looking for miracles." She said as though it were obvious. "She went looking for you."
"Can I talk to you three outside for a minute, please?" Castiel sighed.
"We'll be back in a sec." Elizabeth whispered, giving the girl a comforting smile.
"This is all my fault." Cas said as soon as the room door was closed.
"You know, Cas, say it is." Sam huffed. "What can you do about it?"
"Find Amelia." The Angel replied.
"She did disappear trying to find an Angel." Dean shrugged. "It could be a case."
"Yeah, but we don't know that." Sam pointed out.
"Close enough." Dean retorted.
"Boys, don't you think you owe it to her to find her mother? Especially you?" The Vampire looked to Cas, who nodded. "To put it bluntly, all three of you had a hand in screwing up this girl. So pull yourselves together and find her mum."
"Wow, 'Liza. Tell us what you really think." Dean recoiled.
"I think you're all bloody morons for even debating this right now." Elizabeth shrugged.
"I agree. Give me something to punch, already." The older brother sighed, earning a look from the other two boys. "I'm kidding. I'm fine. I'm just- I'm fine. Look, why don't we go back to the bar, see if we can't track down this Ronnie guy, huh?"
"Yeah, we should let Claire know where we're going first." Sam nodded.
"I'll do it." Elizabeth replied, heading back into the room. "Um... Boys."
The boys walked in to see Claire gone.
"Damn it..." Cas mumbled.
"Well, she either went looking for Ronnie again or, uh-"
"Or she went to go grab her stuff before taking off again." Sam interrupted his brother, holding up the postcard.
"Well, she's got a concussion." Dean looked over her medical notes. "Maybe that'll slow her down."
"Alright. Elizabeth and I will head to the motel. Y'all can check out the bar." Sam nodded.
"Hold on to your flannel." Elizabeth cocked an eyebrow.
Before Sam could respond, she grabbed his hand and they disappeared.
"You have got to give me more warning when you do that..." Sam shut his eyes tight as his body adjusted to the new surroundings.
They were outside the entrance to Curtis' Motor Court.
"My bad." Elizabeth shrugged.
After flashing their badges to the receptionist to find out which room Claire was staying in, the pair explored the room a little, instantly seeing an evidence board on the far side of the room passed a little dining set up.
"Wow. She's been busy." Elizabeth raised her brows.
"Clearly knows her stuff." Sam nodded.
They opted to sit at the dining area after taking a closer look at the board she'd made, waiting for her in the dark.
"Took you long enough." Sam spoke up as the teen entered the room, flicking on the light.
She jumped out of her skin.
"Well, we did take the short route." Elizabeth commented.
"How did you..." She trailed off when the Winchester held up the postcard.
"Also, you checked in under the name 'Claire Novak'. A little pro-tip? Use an alias." He told her.
"Okay." Claire replied sarcastically, moving over to the closet by the door to gather her clothes.
"Claire, we just wanna help." Sam continued.
"I didn't ask for your help." The teen retorted.
"You didn't have to, sweetie. We care about you." Elizabeth sighed.
"I didn't ask for that either."
"You know," Sam started gesturing over to the evidence board. "This is good. We were impressed. How did you get the information that..." He trailed off when Claire threw him her mother's diary.
"It's mostly empty promises and regret, but... There were enough breadcrumbs to get me here." She said.
"How did you get your mom's diary?" Sam asked as he flicked through the pages.
"The motel manager sent mom's stuff to her last known address after she disappeared. It bounced around, eventually found its way to me at one of the foster homes." She explained, not stopping packing her things into her bag.
"You came all this way just to tell her off?" The Winchester asked sceptically.
"You always get along with your mom?" Claire countered.
"Never got the chance to find out. My mom died when I was a baby." Sam replied.
That made Claire stop packing.
"Like I said. We've all got mum baggage." Elizabeth sighed, drumming her fingers on the dining table.
"I'm... I'm sorry, I didn't-"
"Oh, no, it's okay. I got to know her later in life." Sam shrugged. "And, yeah, I suppose we got along okay."
"What?" Claire was clearly confused.
"Baggage." Elizabeth whispered with a smirk.
"In this line of work, death doesn't always mean goodbye." Sam told the teen.
"This is different. My mom left me." Claire said.
Sam sighed, looking down at the postcard still in his hand.
"'Claire, I'll be home soon. We'll be home soon.'" He read. "Doesn't sound like somebody who wanted to abandon you. Did you check her credit cards?"
"They wouldn't send me her records." The teen shook her head.
"Good job Sam's here, then." Elizabeth chuckled.
"Okay, I know you need to be somewhere far away from all of us, but let me get my laptop, I'll teach you how to hack into her credit card records. It'll help you get a lead on your mom." The Winchester said.
Claire thought over her options.
"Show me, but then I'm gone." She sighed.
It took only minutes for Sam to get into Amelia's records.
"There we go." He smiled.
"Seriously? It's that easy?" Claire's brows raised in surprise as she walked over.
"Yes." Sam chuckled. "I can also show you how to set up fake credit cards. It will make life on the road a lot easier."
"Ah, yes, Sam Winchester - perfect role model." Elizabeth smirked from her spot across the table.
"Shut up." Sam playfully glared. "I'm just trying to help her out."
"I can see that." The Vampire retorted.
"You guys are credit card scammers too?" Claire cocked a brow.
"Used to be. Hunting monsters doesn't exactly pay the bills." Sam shrugged.
"But then me and my centuries of good financing came into the picture and I insisted they cut that crap out and let me pay for it all." Elizabeth continued. "Though, I'm pretty sure Dean still does it with all the crap he's magically been able to buy recently..."
"We might have one or two still laying around." Sam admitted. "We don't want to have to rely on you for everything."
The Vampire shrugged in response.
"If you had to credit card scam just to get by, then why do you do it? Hunt, I mean." Claire asked.
"To help people. Make a difference." Sam answered honestly.
"Saving people, hunting things - the family business." Elizabeth smirked, earning an equal expression back from the man.
"That's it?" Claire shook her head.
"That's not enough?" Sam frowned just as someone knocked on the door.
Claire went to answer it, revealing Dean and Castiel.
"Are you alright?" Cas asked her.
"I will be when nobody ever asks me that again." She groaned, regressing back to her teenaged state.
"You guys find Ronnie?" Sam spoke up.
"Yeah." Dean smiled, closing the door.
"Did you give him a punch for me?" Elizabeth wondered.
"More of a face slam into the table, but yeah, I got one in for you, Vampy Pants." He smirked. "He gave up a name - Peter Holloway. He said he was a faith healer."
"So... What? You thinking Angel?" Sam frowned.
"Maybe," Dean nodded, sitting down at the table. "It sounded like he's healed some people, but he may have fed off others."
"A Vamp Angel?" Elizabeth frowned.
"I was thinking Angelpire." The older brother shrugged.
"Yeah, that's weird." Sam commented. "Alright, let's look into this 'Peter Holloway' guy..."
Cas walked over to Claire, who was sat on the end of her bed, with a gift bag in his hand.
"Claire, um... Happy birthday." He said, handing her the bag with a hopeful smile.
She looked inside as she took it, pulling out an 'Grumpy Cat' plushie.
"I got it at the Hot Topical." He smiled.
Elizabeth put her forehead in her palm as the brothers glanced between her and each other.
"You took him to Hot Topic?" The Vampire whispered.
"Where the Hell else do angsty teenagers with an eyeliner addiction go to shop?" Dean said in his defence.
"How do you know that?" She hissed, unable to hide the amused look on her face.
"Right. Um... Thanks, I guess." Claire told the Angel, putting the gift to one side.
Cas couldn't hide his disappointment.
"Woah." Sam spoke up. "Just got an alert from local PD. Ronnie's body was just found outside of Susie's Bar."
"You were just supposed to talk to Ronnie!" Claire raised her voice at Dean. "What did you do to him?"
"I didn't lay a hand on him." Dean protested.
"Dean, that isn't exactly true." Cas huffed.
"Okay, but I didn't kill the guy." The older brother shrugged. "Alright, I'm gunna get suited up and head back over there."
"I'm coming with you." Cas said.
"I'm coming with you too." Claire nodded.
Dean sighed, looking to the two sat at the table.
"You guys wanna get in on this too?" He asked.
"Na, I'm good here." Elizabeth patted the table.
"No, I should probably stay here and research Holloway." Sam continued.
"Great." Dean replied sarcastically.
He left the room with Claire in tow.
"Hey, Cas?" Sam caught him leaving. "What happened in the bar?"
"Well, he wasn't exactly lying with the whole 'slamming faces on the table' thing, but... He snapped. He's getting worse." The Angel replied, making his exit.
Sam and Elizabeth looked to each other.
"That doesn't sound good." The Vampire mumbled.
By the time the three got back, Sam and Elizabeth had found something.
"Hey, we got a lead on Peter Holloway." Sam greeted them as they walked through the door.
"Oh, good. 'Cause he's probably about to split town." Dean sighed.
"What? Why?" Elizabeth frowned.
"Ronnie made a few phone calls before he got shish kebabed." The older brother replied.
"You think he gave Holloway a heads up?" Sam asked.
"If he did, that's probably what got him killed." Dean nodded. "So... We gotta track him down before he bails."
"Well, that's where we might be in luck." Elizabeth huffed, getting to her feet.
"According to county records, Holloway owns a farmhouse about thirty or forty miles from here, so we cross-referenced it with Amelia's credit card receipts." Sam said, moving over to Claire's evidence board, which had a map in the centre of it. "The house is about right there and she's been hitting Biggersons and Gas 'n' Sips all around the area."
"Probably staking the place out." Dean shrugged.
"Exactly." Sam and Elizabeth said in unison.
"Well, what are we waiting for? Let's go." Claire spoke up.
"Claire, you are not going out there." Cas told her.
"She's my mother." The teen protested.
"That house could be empty and it could be a trap." The Angel retorted. "It's too dangerous. I can't let anything happen to you."
"Anything else, you mean." She corrected.
"Claire, you're not going." Dean said.
"You're not either, Dean." Cas told him.
"What?" The Winchester's brows raised.
"Back at the bar with Ronnie?"
"Oh, come on, Cas." Dean practically whined. "He wasn't gunna talk, I just... Helped him talk."
"Dean, Cas is right." Sam spoke up. "We need to keep the Mark in check. And we don't know what's out there. You know, maybe you should... Maybe you should stay here."
"So you wanna bench me again?" Dean accused. When Sam didn't respond, he looked to Elizabeth. "What about you? You wanna have your two cents?"
"Hey, if I had my way, Sam wouldn't be coming either. This whole thing sounds like it'd be a lot easier, quicker and safer if it was just me and Pigeon going." She shrugged.
"That doesn't sound like a bad idea." Cas mumbled.
"Oh, Hell no. You're not keeping me out of this too!" Sam frowned.
"Pigeon?" Claire scoffed, looking to Elizabeth.
"It's a nickname." The Vampire waved a dismissive hand.
"It's also not important right now." Cas interjected. "Okay. Sam can come. But you two are staying here."
Dean hummed his disapproval.
"Fine." He grumbled. "I'll stay and babysit. But if anything happens - anything at all-"
"Yeah, we'll call you. No fighting." Cas said on his way out.
"Yeah, tell her that." Dean scoffed.
"Less of the lip or I'll put you over my knee." Elizabeth smirked as she walked towards the door.
"Promises, promises, Vampy Pants." Dean chuckled earning a disapproving shake of the head from his younger brother, but even Sam couldn't keep the amused smile off his face.
"Gross." Claire grimaced, scrunching up her nose in disgust.
