Chapter Seventy-Three - Suffering

A/N: Picture above is Alexander's face claim.

Dean sat Rowena down in the cell as soon as he got back, immediately following it up with a trip to Sam and Elizabeth's bedroom.
"How's she doing?" He asked, then laid eyes on Alexander. "The Hell's he doing here?"
"Nice to see you again too, Dean." Alexander mumbled, getting up from his seat.
"He's here to help." Sam told him.
"Whatever. We've got a Witch who needs interrogating." Dean replied after a moment's thought.
"Would you mind if I sat in? I haven't seen Rowena since she removed Eden from Elizabeth. The shock factor may loosen her lips a little and persuade her to help your Angel."
"It's a good idea." Sam nodded. "He's also going to ask if she can remove Elizabeth's Eden memories again to see if that can help her."
Dean rolled his eyes.
"Fine."

As soon as Rowena's eyes met Alexander's, her blood ran cold.
"Mister Finley. What on Earth are you doing here?" She asked.
"I'll answer that soon enough, my dear. For now, the brothers have their questions for you." Alexander replied as Sam rifled through the Witch's bags on the table to the left of the Vampire.
"Mind the undergarments, Samuel. Imported, of course." Rowena commented in a desperate attempt to hide her shock for seeing Alexander again.
"Where is it?" Sam asked.
"Where's what, dear?"
"The book!" Sam raised his voice, turning to face her. "The Book of the Damned. The Codex is in there, but the book is not. So, where the Hell is it?"
"I'm sorry, did you just say 'the Book of the Damned?' That blasted thing is real?" Alexander's brows raised in surprise.
"Yes, it is. We had it, but Rowena stole it." Sam replied. "So where is it?"
"Do you take me for a fool?" Rowena smirked. "Like I'd run around with those two spectacularly powerful items anywhere in proximity."
"Well, now we've got the Codex." Sam retorted, holding it up. "And Charlie's code-breaking. So, the book isn't as useful to you as it was."
"Or so you hope." The Witch added. "That's what I admire in you, Samuel. That plucky optimism - that plucky, stupid optimism."
"Sam, why don't you go grab Cas so Florence Nightingale, here, can do her stuff." Dean said, leaning against the table with his arms folded across his chest.
"Yeah." Sam mumbled, handing his brother the Codex on his way out.
"Do I get an answer to my question yet, Alex?" Rowena asked.
"My name is Alexander. If you would be so kind as to use it all." The Vampire scowled, then looked to Dean who put out a hand for him to continue. "I am here because Elizabeth has her memories back. She's dying."
Rowena's sarcastic expression softened. As did Dean's uncaring one. He hadn't been expecting that.
"Dying?" Rowena gasped. "You can't be serious, surely."
"She was only given her memories back, not her abilities. The power in those memories is killing her." Alexander explained. "I need you to remove them again."
"I'm sorry, Alexander. I can't. That spell only works on a person once." The Witch seemed genuinely apologetic.
"Then find another one!" Alexander shouted. "That girl made me who I am today. I am nothing without her. I owe her my life. You must help me."
"I'm sorry, I truly am. You know how much she meant to me too. The only way she's going to heal is if she gets those abilities back. And I'm guessing that option would be far more challenging than simply asking me." Rowena replied.
"You would be right." Alexander sighed, running a hand through his soft, dark hair. He turned to Dean. "I've had my piece. If you need me for anything, I shall be by her side."
Dean nodded, not yet fully processed the new news of his friend's deteriorating condition.
"Uh, actually, Alexander, I'd appreciate it if you stayed here for this." He corrected himself as he took a seat behind the table, putting his feet up on it, knocking Rowena's bag off in the process.
"Of course." Alexander nodded.
"You do recall our deal, eh, Dean?" Rowena spoke up. "First I de-spell the Angel, then I go free."
"Hm." Dean gave an uncaring nod. "Except for one thing."
"There were no exceptions in our arrangement." The Witch retorted.
"The book. Gunna need that baby back." Dean smirked.
"The book was never mentioned in our negotiations."
"Eh, well, now it is."
"Our deal says-"
"Our deal says whatever I want it to say." Dean cut her off, earning a low chuckle from Alexander. "You're gunna play by my rules. Because I have your son on speed dial."
That threw the Vampire off.
"I'm sorry? Her son died some three hundred years ago." Alexander frowned.
"And now he's the King of Hell." Dean nodded.
Alexander's brows raised.
"How the mighty fall and rise again..." He uttered.
"Call him." Rowena hissed. "If I'm dead, you've got a big, fat pile of nothing. No book, ever. Your friend with the bent halo? He goes foaming at the mouth mad and dies. Your turn." She paused to look at Dean, who simply glared at her. "Your eyes, so burdened. What happened, precisely when I removed the Mark? The book wasn't specific. Yes, I read quite a bit of it... What new Hell has Dean Winchester unleashed upon the world?"
"Dean!" Sam shouted, running into the room.
"Yeah?"
"I can't find Cas."
"What?" Dean frowned, getting up from his seat.
"He's not there, he broke free. He's gone." Sam panted.
The three men looked to Rowena, who smiled and shook her head.
"Elizabeth's condition, I suspect, will be the same for a while. I can assist you in looking for the Angel if you like." Alexander said.
"Yeah, that'd be great. Thanks." Sam nodded.
Dean collected the Witch and the four made their way out in the Impala.

"It's so absurd, driving in circles looking for your unhinged Angel." Rowena commented after twenty minutes of searching.
"We're not driving in circles, alright?" Dean retorted. "We're locked onto his phone's GPS. We're tracking his location."
"I have no idea what you just said but I'm sure I could do it faster." Rowena smiled, waving her shackled hands at him.
"Yeah, maybe you could. But you would have to do a spell, which means we would have to take the cuffs off, and we are not going to take the cuffs off." Sam gave an unenthused smile.
"There's no trust. Are we not a team?" Rowena asked.
"No." The brothers grumbled in unison.
"As I understand it, my dear, you've given these boys no reason to trust you. What on Earth happened to you in those three centuries?" Alexander frowned.
"I was asked to remove my friend's memories. I don't think you quite understand what that does to a person, Alexander." The Witch replied.
"I know better than anyone." The Vampire growled, glaring out the back window.
It was a further ten minutes before anyone spoke up again and, of course, it was Rowena.
"You wouldn't expect a road trip with three such strapping lads to be this tedious. Shall we have a wee sing-song?"
"No!" The three men retorted.
"I've myself to blame. I should never make deals with Winchesters. Seeing as they seem unable to hold up their end of the bargain." Rowena continued.
"Meaning what?" Dean asked.
"Oh, just that thing between Sam, Crowley and myself." The Witch uttered.
Dean looked over at Sam, confused.
"What? What's she talking about?"
"Surely you knew Sam made a deal with me to kill my son if I remove the Mark of Cain from your arm." Rowena was playing them, they knew it, Alexander knew it and she definitely knew it. "Well? Is the Mark gone? Yes! Is Crowley dead? No. Oh, you didn't know? He didn't know!"
"Look, I was gunna tell you." Sam muttered. "Obviously. Nothing ever came of it, so I figured there was no point, you know?"
"No point, huh?" Dean looked over at him.
"I mean, I see what Dean's saying. Your wee pal Castiel wouldn't be in this pickle if you'd done what you promised. I would've had no reason to cast the attack dog spell if Crowley were already dead!" Rowena interjected. "Excellent point."
"That's not my point." Dean growled. "Sam knows my point. Keyword – secrets."
"Ah, well, I'm just glad I got the conversation flowing." The Witch smirked. "Family relations are a speciality of mine."
"Hey." Sam spoke up, looking at his tablet.
"Did he stop?" Dean asked, his eyes flicking between the tablet and the road.
"Yeah, he's stopped. And he's close."

They pulled up in an alley and got out of the car.
"Alright, he's gotta be around here somewhere, so you guys head up the street and I'll head the other way." Dean instructed. "Alexander, you're with me."
"Certainly." Alexander nodded.
"You're joking, I'm in heels!" Rowena protested.
Dean looked down, then at Sam, practically rolling his eyes.
The four split up in search for the Angel, anyhow.
"You got speed like Elizabeth?" Dean asked as they walked up the street.
"Nothing quite that fast, but I'm quick, yes." Alexander replied.
"Good, we might need to cut him off. We don't know how far gone he is."
"That won't be an issue." The Vampire nodded.

It wasn't long before they heard a crashing sound coming from inside a warehouse.
"That certainly sounds promising." Alexander cocked a brow, heading in the direction of the noise.
On their left was an orange door – a side exit for the warehouse. They walked in with caution, noting the broken section of door where someone had forced their way through. The sounds were instantly far louder, as though someone was looking for something and didn't care what they broke in the process.
A woman's scream broke their concentration and they broke into a run towards the noise.
Round a corner, Castiel had a girl pinned up against one of the warehouse shelving units, his hands wrapped tightly around her throat.
"Cas!" Dean yelled. "Cas, don't do this." He held out a hand as he walked towards the rabid Angel.
Alexander saw an opportunity and silently walked around the other side of a shelving unit to attack from the other side if need be.
"This isn't you, it's the spell." The Winchester continued. "You can beat this. Cas, let her go." His words weren't doing anything and the woman was slowly losing consciousness.
Alexander looked to Dean for some instruction, earning a nod.
The Vampire grabbed the Angel's hands from behind, forcing them off the girl.
As she fled out of the building, Castiel walked back, forcing both him and Alexander into the shelving.
Dean approached them with caution as Alexander held the Angel steady.
"Hey." The man uttered. "Okay, okay. It's gunna be okay, buddy, alright?"
Cas looked at him, his pupils encircled with bloodshot veins.
He reared back, shaking the Vampire off him with minimal effort, then threw Dean into some nearby wooden pallets.
The Angel followed him as he went, picking him up almost as soon as he'd landed, next throwing him into a construction fence to the left of him.
Alexander gathered his strength and attempted to pull Castiel into a bear hug, trying to subdue him for as long as he could.
But he was nowhere near as strong as Elizabeth. Cas opened his arms out and head-butted Alexander, throwing him back a few paces.
The Angel then picked Dean up by a fist in his shirt and began to repeatedly punch him in the face.
Alexander spotted Sam and Rowena through the corner of his eyes and chose not to intervene any further. Rowena had her cuffs off and Sam's gun was to her head. She began to recite the counter spell with immediate effect. Cas let Dean go, dropping him to the floor.
Rowena looked to Sam with a smirk on her face.
"Do I need to remind you that these are Witch-killing bullets? Finish it!" He ordered.
"Yes, yes, alright." Rowena uttered.
She finished reciting the spell and Castiel began to groan, dropping to his knees as his body convulsed.
"Cas?" Dean exclaimed, holding onto his Angel as he slowly stopped the seizure-like movements, now laying on the cold, concrete floor. The Winchester cupped Castiel's unconscious face, not entirely sure he was okay. "Cas. Hey." Slowly, the Angel opened his eyes, glancing to Dean weakly. "Come on."
Alexander moved forward to help the beaten Winchester support Cas' weight as they got him up into a seated position.
Rowena shouted another spell, causing Sam's gun to go flying across the room and Sam along with it.
"Rowena!" Alexander roared, standing up to follow her.
But she said another spell and the warehouse's vertical sliding door came crashing down before he could get to her.
"I'm sure you had every intention of honouring our deal." She spoke to Dean. "But, why take chances?"
With that, she strutted her way out of the building, her heels on the concrete echoing throughout the room.

When they eventually got back to the Bunker, the first thing Alexander and Sam did was check on Elizabeth. But she wasn't in the bedroom.
And that was Alexander smelt it.
"Blood." He said. "This way."
They walked into the kitchen and let out a mutual gasp at what they saw.
The kitchen was trashed. Pots and pans scattered the counter tops, smashed glass and crockery was everywhere. The fridge was wide open and everything was covered in blood.
Elizabeth was curled up in a ball on the floor on the far side, laying in a puddle of blood and empty blood bags. She was shivering, hugging her knees through her floor length night dress.
They ran to her, picking her up to place her in a seated position against the wall.
"'Liza." Sam breathed, cupping her face in his hands.
"I heard it raining." She uttered through blood-coated lips. "I just wanted the chess set."
The men looked to each other with equal frowns, coated in a thick layer of worry as Dean walked in.
"Oh my God." His eyes widened.
"She's delirious." Alexander sighed, running his hand over her hair. "It's okay, Flower. We'll get you cleaned up and you can get back to bed."
"I don't want Kaa to go away..." Elizabeth murmured.
"Her rattlesnake... I think this is a living memory." The Vampire explained. "Yes... We used to play chess and watch the rain together."
"Can we snap her out of it?" Dean asked.
Alexander let out another sigh, looking the girl over.
"I think that would only put her mind at more risk. It might be best to just wait it out. She must think it's safer in there."
"I'll take Elizabeth to the showers and get her cleaned up. Dean, could you..." Sam trailed off, motioning to the state the kitchen was in.
"Sure, no problem." Dean nodded, already moving towards the mop and bucket.
"I could clean up the broken plates and the pots, if you take care of the blood." Alexander suggested.
"Yeah. That'd be great." The older brother replied.
Sam scooped a trembling, blood-soaked Elizabeth into his arms and took her out of the mess.

He steadily placed her down on the cold tile floor, making sure she could stand on her own before turning on the shower and carefully stripping her from her night gown.
Afraid he would break her if he pressed too hard, Sam gently wiped Elizabeth's body down with a sponge, the water at their feet turning a swirly pink.
The whole time, even as he massaged shampoo into her hair, it was like she was in a trance state, just staring off aimlessly at the wall as he cleaned her.
Dean entered the showers, shielding his eyes as he hung a clean nightdress on the towel rack opposite the showers.
Once dried off and dressed, Sam led her back to bed, where Alexander sat waiting to assist.
"I never imagined I'd ever see her like this." Sam uttered in the corridor as he closed the bedroom door behind them.
"Neither did I." Alexander sighed. "But, I shall remain here for as long as you need me."
"Thanks. I appreciate it." The Winchester gave a small smile. "And I know she does too."

After a visit to the kitchen to grab a couple of beers, Sam made his way out to the War room, where Castiel, Alexander and Dean sat in a steady silence.
"Hey." The younger brother greeted, placing a beer down in front of his sibling, who was nursing his wounds with an ice pack. "You should keep applying that." He said as Dean replaced the pack in his hand for the beer.
"Thanks mom, why don't you just keep the beers coming?" Dean retorted, sipping his drink.
"Dean, I- there aren't words." A very guilty looking Castiel spoke up.
"You're right. There aren't words, Cas, 'cause there's no need. You were under a spell. It's fine." The Winchester replied.
"A rather nasty spell at that. I've seen Rowena use that one before. It never usually had such a happy ending." Alexander continued.
"Yeah, but, you had Rowena. Because of me, you-"
"You know, Cas, we've got the Codex, that's a start. It'll slow Rowena down some. If we'd killed her, the Book of the Damned would've been lost." Sam interjected.
"Besides, we got bigger fish to fry." Dean said.
"The Darkness..." Cas mumbled. "What does she want?"
"Well, the big question is; where the Hell is she? We need her to fix Elizabeth." The older brother groaned in pain as he moved to face the map table.
"Dean, let me, I can fix that." The Angel said, leaning over the table to heal him.
"No, no, no, no." Dean protested, swatting his hand away. "It's fine, Cas. Besides, I had it coming."
Castiel sighed, sitting back down as Dean put his feet up, pressing the ice pack to his swollen face again.
"Where do we go from here?" Sam asked after a short while's silence.
"We carry on as normal." Dean replied. "Because that's all we can do."
