Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-Six - An Unlikely Team
A few hours later, they received a call from Dean telling them not to bother with the spell, as he and Castiel had found Lucifer. He'd last been seen heading towards a faith healer named Sister Jo, under the impression that she wasn't as Human as she led people to believe.
Leaving Nala, Donatello and Father Costanello in the Bunker for their safety - and to work on the Demon tablet - Sam and Eden zapped over to the older Winchester's location.
It was a tiny town hall in the middle of nowhere.
"So, what's the play?" Sam asked.
"Guns a'blazin'." Dean shrugged, taking out an Angel Blade from his jacket.
The large double doors to the building revealed a short corridor, littered with God-fearing pamphlets and local news, another set of double doors up ahead of them. As they hesitantly walked on high alert, they heard a crash coming from the room in front of them.
Dean kicked in the doors, only to reveal Arthur Ketch, who let out a bemused chuckle, lowering his weapon.
"Oh, it's only you." He narrowed his eyes.
"What the Hell are you doing here?" Dean grumbled.
"Do we really have to do all of this again?" Ketch sighed. "Last time we were together, I saved your lives and you shot me. Doesn't that make us even?"
"No, I guess not." The older brother shook his head.
"Dean asked you a question." Sam reminded him. "What are you doing here?"
"My sources tell me Lucifer's back. He's weak and is- or was in this wonderful slice of Americana." Ketch looked around the dimly lit hall. "I was going to try and kill him."
Eden let out a high-pitched sarcastic laugh.
"Good bloody luck."
"As were you, I assume." Ketch huffed.
"Great. Who are you working for?" Sam pressed.
"I swear if you say his name, I'm going to shove a willow tree so far up your-"
"Isn't it possible that I'm simply trying to strike a blow for the good of humanity?" The Englishman cut Eden off.
"No." Cas spoke up. "That's not possible."
"Truth be told, taking out Lucifer would be an enormous feather in the cap." Ketch shrugged. "My business model is very, um... Word of mouth."
"Alright, so if Lucifer isn't here, where is he?" The younger brother asked.
"Ah! Excellent question! I propose we team up." Ketch held out his arms, slowly walking towards the four.
"I propose I kill you permanently and the rest of us go back to the Bunker so I can finish that bloody spell." Eden mumbled.
"Yeah, I'm with her." Dean pointed to the girl with his Angel Blade.
"Ah, ah, hear me out. We can share intel, cover more ground, work that spell of yours together. Hm? Hazaar!" Ketch held out his hands defensively.
Castiel spun his Angel Blade between his fingers, pointing it behind him as he reached out and touched Ketch's forehead, instantly putting him to sleep.
"But it's no fun when they don't scream..." Eden pouted.
"We're not killing him." The Angel grumbled. "Not yet, at least."
Dean reached down, picking the unconscious man up and throwing him over his shoulder to take him out to the Impala, dumping him in the trunk without much care.
"Alright. I say we take dickbag here back to the Bunker, find out what he knows, let Eden do her thing, burn his bones and flush his ashes." Dean proposed.
"I second that." Eden held up her hand.
"I like that plan." Cas nodded.
"Hey," Sam started, looking down at the tablet he'd brought with him. "Check this out."
He flipped the tablet around so they could see. It was a video of a young, copper-haired Caucasian woman with her hands on a man in a wheelchair.
"That's Sister Jo? The faith healer?" Dean asked, earning a nod from his brother.
In the video, she gently helped the man get up from his wheelchair, raising the brows of everyone watching.
"No, that's not-" Cas cut himself off. "She's an Angel. Her name is Anael."
"Alright, so..." Sam sighed, turning the tablet back round to face him. "Say Lucifer drained her and killed her... Where's her body?"
"You boys go ahead, I'll meet you back at the Bunker." Eden frowned up at the building.
"What are you gunna do?" The younger brother asked.
The Dark Angel gave a short-lived smile, reaching into the pocket of Sam's jacket to pull out a small flashlight.
"See if I can find a shortcut to this spell." She replied, already walking off back towards the town hall.
As she slowly wandered the outskirts of the room, she heard the Impala's engine roar into life and pull away.
She sniffed the air, sensing Lucifer's presence there not so long ago as she flicked on the flashlight, pointing it down at the floor less than a foot in front of her.
Fortunately, the janitor hadn't been in that day to clear up after Sister Jo's session. That meant loose hairs. That meant DNA.
Whilst Jack's hair would do the trick, there wasn't anything quite like going straight for the source.
After over half an hour of searching, Eden finally found one behind a screen on the far side of the room, radiating Archangel energy.
"Gotcha." She whispered to herself, picking up the ashy blond strand. She unscrewed the battery compartment of the flashlight, slipping the hair between the casing and the battery for safe keeping when she got a call.
"Archangel tracking services, you say 'yes', I'll smite the rest." She answered.
"Hilarious." Sam chuckled. "I put an alert on Sister Jo's credit cards. Something's just come up."
"And you're betting if Lucifer's anywhere, it's with her?" Eden cocked a brow.
"Exactly. Even if he's not, we can talk to her." He replied.
"Alright." She sighed, zapping out of the building and into the Impala, finding herself sat next to Castiel, behind Dean. She hung up the phone. "Hello, boys."
"Would you stop doing that!" Dean yelled, making sure he didn't crash the car.
"Oh, come on, what were you expecting? Seriously?" Eden rolled her eyes, unable to hide her smirk. "When I get a call, I come. That's kinda how this has worked for the past three years, give or take."
It was morning by the time they got to the motel.
"This is it?" Dean asked, pulling up across the street.
"Yep. Last place Jo- or someone used her credit card. Checked in last night." Sam replied.
"Do you think Lucifer is with her?" Castiel wondered.
"Why would he keep an Angel alive?" Eden shrugged.
"Yeah. She could be dead." Dean added. "One way to find out."
The four got out of the car, the older brother grabbed a small khaki coloured duffel bag to sling over his shoulder as they made their way towards the Diamond Deluxe Motel.
After finding out what room she was in, Sam phoned her up and made some excuse about her card faulting to get her out.
"Well, good news. She's alive." He said, hanging up the phone as they waited outside the front desk kiosk.
"The Hell has he been up to?" Eden frowned, peeking round the corner of the building to see the woman exiting her room, looking down at her phone. "I recognise her. Jensen- fake Dean... That's this universe's version of his wife. He showed me pictures."
"What?" Dean scoffed, walking over to see her too. He gave a small mouth shrug. "Fake me didn't do too bad."
"Guys, focus." Sam sighed.
Castiel walked passed them, making his move.
"Anael." He grabbed her attention, making her jump.
"Castiel." She replied as the other three came out to join them. "What are you doing here?"
"We were gunna ask you the same thing." Dean told her.
"We've been looking for Lucifer." Sam said. "Have you seen him? Do you know where he is?"
Anael looked slightly panicked as she looked back towards the room.
"Yes." She replied. "He's in the room."
"On it." Eden glared passed her, going to move, but Sam grabbed her shoulder.
"Not yet. You're not going in alone." He uttered.
"Has he hurt you?" Castiel asked the other Angel.
"Not yet. He's threatened. He wants to drain my grace." Anael explained.
"So, he's still weak?" Sam asked.
"Very."
"Cool. This'll be easy." Eden shrugged, going to move again, only to be pulled back by Sam once more.
"Last time you faced off with him, you were weak enough for the Alpha Vampire to kill you." He hissed. "You're not going in there alone."
"You have to help me." Anael pleaded.
"We will." Dean spoke up. "But first, you're gunna help us. You've gotta get his attention, get him to open the door. Cas and Eden, here, will go the back way, cut him off if he tries to run."
Anael nodded, leading the boys towards the room as Castiel and Eden went round back.
She knocked on the door.
"Lord Lucifer? Could you let me in?" She called through the door. "Sorry, I forgot my key."
The door opened, revealing the ashy blond Devil.
"Anael-" He cut himself off as he saw her stood behind the Winchesters.
"Mornin' sunshine." Dean greeted as they entered the room.
Lucifer walked backwards away from them, visibly nervous.
"Morning... Gents." He gave a breathy chuckle. "Hey."
He turned to try and run, but Castiel and Eden walked through the bathroom.
"Cas! You're alive! That's... That's awesome. Eden's here too. Yippee." He continued.
"What's up, Luci? Feeling a little down and out?" Eden tilted her head.
"They made me. They forced me to tell them how... Weak you still are." Anael told him.
Lucifer gave a ghost of a nod.
"Well, great seeing ya. It's been a long time." He addressed the brothers. "Nice jacket there, Dean. Sam, your hair, it's magnificent. Is that a leave-in conditioner you have there?"
Sam ignored him, leaning towards Anael.
"We've got this. Go." He instructed.
The Angel didn't make any attempts to move.
"So, what are we gunna do now? You gunna kill me?" Lucifer shrugged.
"Mm." Dean hummed, reaching into his jacket pocket, pulling out the Angel cuffs. "Eventually. We've got someone who's been waiting quite some time to get even." He nodded to the Dark Angel opposite him.
"Even. Eden. It's quite poetic, don't you think, Luci?" Eden smirked, crossing her arms.
Dean moved towards him, leaving Anael to take her shot.
She slammed her open palm into Sam's chest, throwing him into the wall behind him, smashing a large framed print in the process.
Lucifer took the opportunity, doing the same to Castiel.
Dean tried to grab Lucifer, but the Devil spun and threw him into a door on the opposite side of the room.
Eden went for a running punch straight to his face, knocking him back a few paces. Anael caught him, steadying him as he found his footing again.
Both the Angel and Archangel stalked towards her.
Anael took out an Angel Blade from the sleeve of her navy blue trench coat, going to stab Eden in the ribs. Eden blocked it, but left herself open for Lucifer's attack. He threw her across the room onto the double bed to his left.
She quickly regained her composure, taking her own Angel Blade out from her thigh high boot.
She lunged for Lucifer, who grabbed her. Anael took her shot, stabbing the Dark Angel in the chest. Eden cried out, her strength faltering long enough for Lucifer to clamp his hand around hers and shove her Angel Blade into her abdomen.
"We need to go." Anael told him.
"Okay. I just wanna enjoy this for one more minute." The Devil panted, forcing the blade out of Eden's hand to stab her a couple more times, finishing it off by slitting her throat. "Maybe I'll be responsible for another one of your deaths, huh? Here's hoping."
Eden choked out, blood spluttering from her lips.
Lucifer dropped her body, tucking the Angel Blade under his arm as he watched the blood pooling around her.
He looked between the brothers and Castiel who watched in horror. He made a fist, using his magic to cause them immense pain.
The Winchesters and the Angel groaned out in their agony, clutching their mid-sections, gasping for breath.
"That's good. That's really good." Lucifer uttered, enjoying the scene unfold before him.
A figure appeared in the corner of his eye in the open door to the room.
Ketch threw some sort of grenade at him.
Lucifer grabbed Anael and disappeared as it exploded, Holy fire filling a good portion of the room.
Sam scrambled across the floor to Eden's side.
"Eden!" He called out, scooping her up into his lap, covering himself in blood in the process. "Eden, baby..."
Her breathing was ragged and gargling with blood, coughing some up as she tried to reply, her eyes barely open.
"It's okay, don't try to talk. We'll get you healed up. You'll be fine." He told her, stroking some blood-soaked hair from her face.
"Wait, wait, wait," Dean held out a hand as he looked up at Ketch. "Did you just-"
"No..." The man sighed. "They vanished before it went off. But, you're welcome."
Dean and Castiel got to their feet, walking over to Sam and Eden.
"How is she?" The older brother asked.
"You got any blood in the trunk?" Sam asked, looking up at his brother.
"I think we're all out. I haven't re-stocked her yet." Dean huffed.
Sam turned back to Eden.
"It's okay. We'll get you back to the Bunker. You'll be good as new." He nodded, not entirely sure of who he was trying to convince.
"Congratulations, you just helped Lucifer escape." Dean snapped at Ketch.
"Put another way, I opted out of my own escape and put myself in harm's way to save your lives... Again." Ketch argued.
"How did you get out of the trunk?" Sam asked.
"I'm Ketch." The man shrugged. "I found the Demon bomb in your weapons stash and I thought, with Lucifer's weakened state, it might make a dent."
"Well, it seems his 'weakened state' might've been greatly exaggerated." Cas spoke up.
"Yeah, exactly. And Jo, what's the deal with her?" Sam frowned.
"I don't know." Cas shook his head. "In Heaven, she was nothing, she was a low-level functionary."
"Yeah, well, now she's Satan's gal pal and that's awesome." Dean grumbled, slinging his duffel bag back over his shoulder.
"Gentlemen, this may, once again, fall on deaf ears, but I shall have another go." Ketch started. "Clearly, Lucifer's more dangerous than we thought. I propose we pull resources and go after him together."
"Dude, why would we ever trust you?" Sam narrowed his eyes.
"Fine." Ketch huffed. "As proof of my sincerity, I shall come clean. I am working for Asmodeus. Happy?"
"You told us you cut that crap out after the bar incident." Dean frowned.
"Yes, well, I lied." The man shrugged. "And now I'm not."
"How is that supposed to make us feel better?" The older brother raised his voice.
"It's not. It's supposed to present an opportunity. If I'm working for him, then I can pass information onto you. Not only that, but I could be your gateway into getting his quarter of Eden's soul back and putting an end to him." Ketch replied.
"How the Hell do you know about that?" Sam demanded.
"He told me, of course."
"Alright. And you would do that. For us." Cas squinted.
"For everyone." Ketch corrected. "I know you think I'm a monster-"
"Because you are." Dean interrupted.
"But, even I must draw the line somewhere." The Brit continued. "And letting Lucifer free upon the Earth? Well, as it turns out, that's my line. Not to mention the whole Michael situation. I know you want to kill me. I know you can't forgive me. But, if you think about it, I'm the lesser of... Well, at least three evils. All I ask is that you wait to murder me until after I prove useful. Hm?"
The three boys looked between each other with clear hesitance in their eyes.
"Fine. Whatever. Let's just... Get out of here. We've gotta get Eden back to the Bunker." Sam sighed.
Ketch nodded and went to help pick the Dark Angel up.
"Ah! You don't touch her." Sam snapped, swatting his hand away.
Ketch took a couple of steps back, putting his hands up.
"Just trying to help." He muttered.
"This is something we actually don't need your help with." Cas retorted as Dean bent down, helping Eden into a sitting position so that Sam could get up, picking her up before he straightened out fully.
Eden silently cried out at the movement, causing her to choke on more blood, balling a fist around a section of Sam's jacket by his collar.
"Sorry, I'm sorry." He breathed.
Sam had Eden in the front of the Impala, cradled in his arms, applying pressure to her neck wound. Dean had grabbed her legs, placing them in his lap for the ride home, making sure she was as comfortable as possible.
There were several buckets of fried chicken on the map table when they got in. Donatello was eyes deep in the Demon tablet and Father Costanello was sat next to him, stroking Nala's head softly, helping the Prophet out wherever he could.
"What happened here?" The Father exclaimed, standing up as he watched Sam descending the stairs with Eden in his arms.
"Lucifer got a little stabby with an Angel Blade." Dean explained. "She'll be fine when we get some blood in her."
He walked out into the kitchen to get as many blood bags as he could carry.
Sam gently set her down in a seat by Nala, who slithered across the table to investigate the new smell of Dark Angel blood, flicking her tongue curiously.
Dean returned with six blood bags, placing five on the table and handing the other to her with her thanks.
'Never been stabbed with an Angel Blade before... not properly, at least.' She used her ASL, knowing Sam had been learning for Eileen as he perched on the table next to her.
"Well, let's hope you don't make a habit out of it." He smiled.
Dean offered the Dark Angel a smile as he sat down on her other side.
"Drink up, Vampy Pants. Need you healed up so you can actually make conversation again."
"So... Ketch. Can we trust him?" Cas asked, leaning forward in his spot next to Donatello.
"Not even a little." The older brother mumbled as he took out his gun to clean it.
"Yeah, of course not. But... We need him." Sam pointed out. "For now."
"Right. And when we don't?" Castiel pressed.
Dean cocked his gun, figuring that was just about answer enough.
"Yes." He uttered as Sam looked over the Prophet's scribblings.
"Donatello, you're doing great." He praised. "It looks like you've made a lot of progress."
"It's like pulling freaking teeth!" The man yelled out, making everyone jump. He quickly composed himself. "I... I'm working my way through the ingredients." He uttered.
"Right..." Sam nodded, glancing to Eden, who had a blood bag tube in her mouth, glancing back. He cleared his throat. "Okay, at least we know the spell we need is in there. And, we have a plan."
Donatello put his head back down, re-focusing on his translations.
Castiel looked over at him with a concerned frown.
"How are you doing?" Sam asked, turning his head to face the Dark Angel, who now had her snake draped over her shoulders, shook her head with a frown.
Sam sighed, running his hand along her thigh.
"Okay. I'll get the medical supplies. We'll get you patched up in the meantime." He said, getting up from his seat.
"Come on, Vampy Pants. Let's get you to bed." Dean spoke up, also getting to his feet.
Eden nodded, wrapping an arm over his shoulders as he gently took her waist, hauling her up into his arms.
Once in bed, Sam spent the next couple of hours cleaning and stitching up her wounds and wrapping them. He didn't feel too comfortable about stitching up her neck wound, but she'd silently reassured him that it was okay and that she would be fine.
"Want some comfier clothes?" He asked as he packed the medical supplies away. Eden nodded, adjusting her position in the bed. "Alright. I'll be back in a minute."
He came back with one of her black night gowns, gingerly sat her up, got her undressed and changed. Eden signed 'thank you', then held up a fist, sticking out her thumb, index finger and pinkie.
"You're welcome. I love you too." Sam smiled, leaning down to kiss her. "Get some rest. Do you need me to take Marco home?"
She nodded as her eyes slipped closed.
Sam gave a small smile at the sight before he left the room, flicking off the light and closing the door behind him.
"How is she?" Dean asked as the younger brother walked into the library, seeing the four men staring at him.
"She's exhausted. Not to mention not healing." He shrugged, sitting down next to Dean. "I'm not sure how many more hits from Lucifer she can take."
"Well, before the last time, they'd never actually fought before. As she said back then, she's not used to Archangel power being used against her." The older brother shrugged. "Yet she keeps puttin' her neck on the line."
"Yeah, for us." Sam countered. "You know what she's like."
"Yeah, I do." Dean sighed.
"She loves you both." Father Costanello spoke up. "My senses may not be what they used to be, but I could be blind and I'd still see that."
Sam gave him a smile and a nod.
"Would you like to go back home?" He asked.
Marco chuckled.
"I'm sure the only reason she brought me here was to meet you. She makes excuses, but I've known her long enough to see her tells." He said. "She could've had me sanctify that blood in my church."
"You've helped me with the Demon tablet. More than I thought you'd be able to." Donatello shrugged.
"I'm glad I was of service." The Father bowed his head. "But, yes, I think it's time for me to go. You'll let me know of her healing status and when you get the Nephilim boy back?"
Sam nodded, getting up from his seat as Castiel, Dean and Donatello did.
"Of course." The younger brother replied.
They all shook Marco's hand, thanking him for his help before Sam led him through to the garage, grabbing Eden's car keys from the hook by the door.
