Chapter One Hundred and Thirty-Three - Jessica the Reaper

Eden was woken up in her least favourite way - her phone ringing.
"Who's calling you so early?" Sam groaned next to her, his arm curling over her stomach as she leaned over to grab the device.
She squinted at the brightness of the screen, seeing 'Tobias' show up.
"Ugh... Something's up in Vamp Town." She sighed, answering the call. "Hello, Tobias. What can I do for you?"
"I'm sorry to call you so early, Eden." Tobias was panting, like he was running. "Banner Elk. It's fallen."
Eden shot up into a seated position in bed, instantly feeling wide awake.
"Excuse me?"
"Hunters, they came. The whole town is on fire. So many are dead. I barely escaped with Willow. I didn't know who else to call." Words tumbled out of the Vampire's mouth as he continued to run, the hand without the phone gripping Willow's tightly.
Sam opened his eyes, blinking the sleep out of them as he stared at Eden's back inquisitively.
"Oh my God... I'd... I'd invite you here but, it's not safe. We're kind of going up against Archangels at the moment." Eden sighed, running a hand through her bed-tussled hair. "Tell you what, head west. Head towards Lebanon, Kansas. I'll come and get you and take you somewhere."
Sam motioned for her to put the call on speaker, so Eden took the phone from her ear, pressed the button and held the device between the two of them.
"Hey, Tobias. What's happened?" The Winchester asked.
"Hunters. They knew exactly what they were getting themselves into. They burned the whole town down and beheaded anyone that exited the houses. I don't know how many escaped, but I have Willow with me and I don't know where we're going." Tobias explained.
"Where are you now?" Sam pressed.
"We're about a mile east of Heaton." Willow called from the background.
The younger brother looked to Eden, who nodded, confirming his silent question that she knew where that was.
"Go there. We're on our way." Sam instructed.
"We'll be a while as I don't have any teleportation right now. If you have any money, go book yourselves into a motel or something, text me where you are and we'll be as quick as we can." Eden added.
"Okay. Please hurry. I think one of the Hunters saw us run." Tobias told them.
"We will." She nodded. "If anything happens or you have to move, call me back, okay?"
"Okay. Thank you for this." The Scotsman replied, hanging up the phone.
"We've gotta get out of here. If a single one of those Hunters catch up to them, they're dead." Eden sighed, throwing the bed sheets from her legs.

After rapidly throwing on some clothes, the pair ran through the Bunker. Eden went straight for the garage, Sam going to the kitchen to get Dean in the loop.
"Going somewhere?" The older brother asked, sat at the table on his laptop with a cup of coffee sat next to him.
"Vamp Town got hit by Hunters. Tobias called. We're going to get him and Willow." Sam replied, piling some blood bags into a cooler at the fridge.
"Oh, crap." Dean's brows raised. "Need me to grab my stuff?"
"Uh, no, but if you could go to the blood bank and stock up..."
"Sure, yeah, no problem. Keep me updated." Dean nodded, downing his cup to get a move on.

"So... You know the Hunter population better than I do. Any idea who could've done this?" Eden asked, her eye fixed on the road and her knuckles white against the steering wheel of her Camaro.
"I have no idea... We explicitly told everyone we knew to pass the message on that Banner Elk wasn't to be touched. Either someone literally didn't get the message or they chose to ignore it." Sam shrugged, looking down at his phone as he texted Jody, asking if she knew of anything related to the attack.
"Yeah, well, something had to tip them off that Vampires lived in Banner Elk, so, if it was the latter, I want a word with whoever it was." The Dark Angel growled.
"Baby..." The Winchester sighed, finally looking up at her. "You can't kill a Hunter."
"The Hell I can't!" Eden raised her voice, glancing over to him briefly. "Those people did nothing wrong and they were under my protection. An example has to be made."
"Look, I get you're angry. Hell, I am. I lived amongst those people too, remember. But you've gotta start thinking straight. If you kill a Hunter, especially in defense of a Vamp nest, they'll see you as a threat and they'll come after you too. You know that'll just start a war we don't want or have time for right now." Sam pointed out, waving his hand in front of him. Eden huffed, rolling her eyes. "You know I'm right. So, just... Calm down. We can go get Tobias and Willow and then, if you want, we can go and see if there are any other survivors and bring them back too. I asked Dean to do an extra run to the blood bank, so there'll be plenty of food there for them when we get back."
"Fine." Eden grumbled. "But if I see any Hunters there, I won't be responsible for anything that happens."

They arrived outside a small motel just outside of Heaton, North Carolina, just as the sun began to set. Tobias heard the engine and came out to greet them.
Eden ran as soon as she saw Willow, hugging the teen tightly, smoothing a hand down her hair.
"Are you alright? Did you get hurt at all?" The Dark Angel asked, holding her at arm's length by the shoulders.
"A couple of burns from the fires, but that's it." Willow shrugged, showing some blistered skin on her right arm.
"Here, this should heal it up for you." Sam walked round from the trunk of the Camaro, handing them each a blood bag with their thanks. "How sure are you on any other survivors?"
"We didn't see anyone, but who knows?" Tobias replied, sipping from his blood bag.
"How about you and I go check. Eden and Willow can stay here." Sam suggested. "Any survivors will need a friendly face."
"I'm going, Sam." Eden gave him a warning look. "I know exactly why you're trying to keep me back here."
"Oh, I know. But saying you won't kill the first Hunter you see and actually doing it are two different things and I know you and how bad your lack of self-control tends to be when you're angry." The Winchester replied, holding his hands out for the car keys.
"We can catch up while they're gone." Willow smiled, swallowing down a mouthful of blood.
Eden sighed heavily, reluctantly handing over the keys.
"Fine. But first sign of any trouble, you call me. Got it?"
"Got it." Sam leaned in, kissing her hairline before giving Tobias a nod.
The two men got in the car and drove off as quickly as they could, leaving Eden to lead Willow back inside the run down motel room.

The search had come up empty. The Hunter or Hunters had been thorough in their work, taking down any stragglers they missed in their initial attack. There was no sign that any Vamps got away besides Tobias and Willow.
As soon as they got back to the motel, they swapped drivers and hit the road back towards Kansas.
Once back at the Bunker, they gave them the tour and made sure they were sufficiently fed before introducing them to the older Winchester, who was sat in the library looking online for cases.
"So, this is the famous Dean Winchester, huh?" Tobias' lowlander Scottish accent somehow became stronger as he addressed the older brother, strolling up to him with his hand extended.
"That I must be. It's good to finally meet you, Tobias." Dean gave a warm smile as he shook his hand, getting up from his seat at the library table. He then glanced to the small girl slightly tucked behind Eden. "And that makes you Willow. I've heard a lot about you since our little phone call. Don't worry, I don't bite."
"I do." Willow gave a cheeky, child-like smirk as she came out from behind the Dark Angel, her retort making everyone laugh.
"Yeah, I guess you do. Keep forgetting you're also a Vamp. You're so young." Dean commented, scratching the back of his head awkwardly. "I hear the change was necessary, though."
"Alexander saved my life." The girl nodded. "But, hey, I'm almost twenty now. I just wished I looked it."
"You're like our own little Claudia, aren't you, Willow?" Eden smirked, running her hand down the girl's soft, naturally white blonde waves.
"So, you guys picked your rooms yet? It's not like we're short on space. So long as you don't touch the one next to mine or the one on the right passed the kitchen, you've got free reign - any rooms you like." Dean told them.
Eden narrowed her eyes at him, wondering what had got him in such a good and hospitable mood.
"Wow, thank you, Dean. That's very kind." Tobias smiled, turning back to face Sam and Eden. "Thank you to all of you for your kindness."
"You're my responsibility. I chose to take charge of Banner Elk when you came to me. I wasn't about to just let you die alone out there." Eden cocked a brow.
"Yeah. You're family. We look after our family." Sam added, wrapping his arm around Eden's shoulders.
"So I've heard." Tobias chuckled. "The one for all and all for one mentality of the Winchesters is quite famous, you know."
"Oh, great, we're the friggin' three Musketeers now." Dean huffed through a laugh.
"Best make that five, if Sam's serious about these two moving in. Or six for Pigeon." Eden smirked.
"Of course I'm serious." The younger brother frowned. "I don't say these things lightly, you know."
"I know." Eden smiled, moving over to kiss him. "It means a lot."
"Agreed. Thank you, both." Tobias nodded.
Willow walked over to Sam, hugging his waist.
"Hey, I'm cool with it." Dean held up his hands, mouth shrugging.

"So. Gunna tell me what got you in such a good mood?" Eden asked, walking into the War room later on that evening.
"What do you mean?" Dean asked, frowning as he sipped his beer.
"You were way more welcoming to Tobias and Willow than I've ever seen you. What happened while we were gone?" The Dark Angel sat next to the older Winchester, her back turned away from the hall to the kitchen.
"Nothing." Dean shrugged. "Cas stopped by, but that was it."
"Ah." Eden smirked. "Cas stopped by."
"The Hell's that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing... What did you two talk about?"
"Just... Stuff. You know? Nothing major." Dean looked at her with sceptically narrowed eyes.
"I see." Eden had a playful smile tugging at her lips that she desperately tried to hide.
"What?" The Winchester sighed.
"Nothing."
"Bull. What is it?"
"You talk about 'stuff' with Pigeon and all of a sudden you're in an exemplary good mood? Nothing, of course." The playful smile only grew.
"You're impossible. You know that?" Dean huffed, giving her an equally playful glare.
"Only Angel of Darkness in existence? Of course I know that, babycakes." Eden chuckled, getting up.
She passed him, placing a kiss on his hair as she did, heading towards the bedrooms.

Willow had grown rather attached to Nala over the following days, which Eden loved to see. It was comforting to know that, not only would Nala have some company while they were on cases and Apocalypse world duty, but Willow and Tobias wouldn't be bored.
Sam had come up with the idea to speak with Rowena, trying to assemble everyone they could think of powerful enough to help with the impending Michael situation and so, had called her with Dean and Cas while Eden was showering.
"You know, she's right. You never go to parties." The Angel said after they'd been hung up on.
"Who's having a party? Is it finally time for me to shake the dust off my dancing shoes?" Eden walked into the library through the War room, towel drying her hair.
"No one's having a party. Rowena's at one. She said she won't help." Dean sighed, leaning back in his chair.
"I told you to wait until I was present to talk to her. If there's anyone able to talk her into helping, it's me." The Dark Angel rolled her eyes.
"You're supposed to be on Gabriel duty. We can handle one Witch." The older brother replied.
"How is that going?" Sam asked.
"Well," Eden started, moving to place the towel down on the other table before sitting in his lap. "I've looked through everything I can think of, scoured the internet for any classic 'Gabriel' signs and nothing. Until I can use my wings again, I'm out of ideas - even then, he might've have purposefully warded himself against me."
"He'd do that? You two seemed very close." Cas frowned.
"We're close, but not 'hey Gabe, fancy helping us destroy your alternate universe brother before he wreaks apocalypse two point O on our world' close." Eden countered.
"Yeah, well, until someone comes up with any bright ideas, we've got nothing if Rowena's not playing ball." Dean groaned as he got up, heading towards the kitchen with Castiel in tow.
"How are your wings doing?" Sam asked, resting his hand on her thigh.
Eden shrugged.
"Almost there. I can feel it. All my other powers are back and functioning. Just this to go."
"I think I found one of those cases you might be interested in." Willow walked in from the bedrooms with Eden's tablet in hand and Nala draped over her shoulders.
She wandered over and handed it to Sam.
"Wealthy Portland donor spontaneously combusts at modern art gallery. This was only posted five minutes ago. How'd you find this so quickly?" He frowned.
"Eden's been teaching us. She suggested we be your eyes from the Bunker while you're occupied." The girl replied.
Sam glanced to Eden, who smirked.
"We've done more on less." She pointed out.
"Hold up... Rowena mentioned she was at a party in the pacific northwest. It might be a stretch, but do you think it's possible she's behind this?" The Winchester asked.
"Something sporadic and public happening to someone wealthy? Definitely sounds like her style... But, you're right. It's a bit of a stretch. The pacific northwest is reasonably large." Eden cocked a brow, adjusting herself in his lap. "However, if your gut tells you it's her, then I'll go get ready, you tell Dean and Pigeon and we'll go."
Sam nodded, patting her side for her to get up.

Castiel had gone to Heaven to try and seek the help of the Angels once again, not that he was all too optimistic about it.
As they passed through the state line into Idaho, Sam sighed heavily, hanging up the dead call to Rowena for the umpteenth time.
"Still no answer?" Dean asked, glancing to his brother briefly. Sam shook his head. "Look, I want the fun and flirty Rowena back as much as anyone, but we've gotta be ready for that not to be the case."
"Or maybe she just has bad cell reception." A shrill female voice said from the back seat.
Eden jumped as she looked to her left at an auburn-haired woman who appeared to be in her mid to late thirties. Dean stamped on the brakes before stepping on the gas again to pull onto the side of the road.
Everyone got out of the car.
"What the Hell?" Dean roared.
"Who are you?" Sam demanded.
"Hi, Dean." The woman smiled.
"Wait... Jessica." The older brother frowned, taking a few steps towards her.
"You know her?" Sam and Eden said in unison.
"Yeah, she's a Reaper. She tried to take me into the light, didn't work out." He explained.
"It really didn't." Jessica shook her head. "And, honestly? It's been a little sad watching you go this long without telling Sam and Eden about me."
"What do you mean 'watching?'" Sam asked.
"Well, after Dean's little trip to the veil, Death asked me to keep an eye on you two boys, in case."
"In case of what?" Dean pressed.
"This, I guess." She shrugged. "I don't ask Death questions. Never goes well."
"So, what, you've just been hovering around us, invisible, like a babysitter?" Sam narrowed his eyes.
"More like a baby monitor." Jessica smirked.
"They're fine. As you can see. So, you can go." Eden scowled.
"Oh, honey, I don't answer to you." Jessica giggled.
"So, then, you've seen, um-"
"Oh, everything." The Reaper cut Sam off.
"You mean like, everything everything?" Dean asked.
"I'm rather fond of Sam's..." She trailed off, earning a look that would shake Death from Eden. "Extensive array of hair products." The younger brother gave her a resting look as he sighed heavily. Jessica turned to Dean. "Not to mention the three day old bacon cheeseburger in your room. Or the VHS tape hidden under your bed labeled 'Sweet Princess Asuka meets the Tentacles-"
"Okay, okay, alright." Dean interrupted, pointing an accusing finger at her. "That's not cool, okay? That's- first of all, that's a classic. Secondly...It's for emergency cases only."
"Dean... Stop, no." Eden scrunched up her nose in disgust, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Okay, gross." Sam uttered, turning back to the Reaper. "Why are you just manifesting now?"
"People in Portland have been dying outside of their assigned times." Jessica explained. "Because, apparently, someone has become powerful enough to do that."
"Rowena?" Sam and Eden asked.
Jessica gave a forced half-smile as confirmation.
"So, I've been instructed to offer my assistance as a resource." She finished.
"You said 'people are dying', as in, more than one." Dean clarified.
"Four. So far." Jessica shrugged.
"Yeah, okay, we're handling it." The younger brother waved a hand.
"But, if you need anything-"
"We don't." Sam and Eden, again, said in unison, earning a look from the other.
"And we won't." The younger brother added.
"Cool, well, I'm around. Always." Jessica replied before disappearing.
"Bloody hell, I hate Reapers." Eden mumbled, wandering back over to the car.
"Okay, well, you know we could've actually used her help." Dean huffed.
"Seriously?" Sam scoffed. "You trust her?"
"No, I don't trust her. But, between the Reapers and Death, the Hell's this Witch got us into, huh?" Dean retorted.
Sam didn't answer, prompting the older brother to follow Eden back to the car, getting into the driver's side.

After a load more rejected calls to Rowena, the trio eventually pulled up outside the LaVeau Gallery in Portland, wanting to check out the crime scene.
Doing some research, they found out that the latest victim had been involved with a pharmaceutical company. The company had been ousted for the selling and distribution of thousands of tainted and improperly checked drugs. The victim had gotten off her charges on a technicality.
That sounded like a motive, sure, but not a 'Rowena motive'.
Inspecting the scene, they came across something that peaked their interests; next to the scorch marks of the victim, were more scorch marks that looked a lot older and far more faded, barely noticeable if you weren't either looking for it or looking over the scene from the right angle.
"Hold on, I've seen something like that before." Sam frowned, taking out his tablet. "No way... That is what's left of a Reaper."
He turned the tablet to show them an old renaissance painting split into two halves; one displaying a Reaper hovering over a couple and the other of the Reaper turning to dust above them.
"So... Rowena's killing people to get to the thing she actually wants to kill - that being, apparently, the Reaper." Eden frowned.
"Looks like." Sam nodded.
"I have an idea." Dean stated, already turning to walk off. "Come on."
"What?" The younger brother asked as they walked out of the main entrance.
"Yo, Jessica." The older raised his voice, looking around the immediate vicinity.
"Hi." She appeared with a bright smile behind them.
"Hi." Sam repeated. "So, um, that dead Reaper in there. Is that why you're so interested in helping?"
"I'm glad you're so ready to chat now." Jessica replied. "This will be a positive experience."
"Positive experience with a Reaper. Because they happen just about every bloody day." Eden rolled her eyes, crossing her arms.
"Eden's right. You can cut the whole warm and fuzzy thing." Dean grumbled.
"That's just a useful affect. I'm still an instrument of Death." The Reaper shrugged.
"You know, you could've told us Rowena was killing Reapers." Sam said.
"And I would have, but you were 'handling it.'" Jessica used airquotes to accompany her sarcastic tone.
"Alright, talk." Dean huffed.
"Rowena's changing people's fates. She's killing them before their time and, when a Reaper shows-"
"She torches them too." Sam finished for her.
"Yes."
"Why?" Dean pressed.
"You'll have to ask her. When you stop her. Because if she keeps this up, she's going to throw off fate." Jessica replied.
"Fate's a load of crap, anyway." Eden mumbled, looking down at something on her black overcoat sleeve.
"The whole 'greater machinery of death' isn't crap. You should know better than anyone, Eden." The Reaper smirked.
"The bloody hell's that supposed to mean?" The Dark Angel frowned, unfolding her arms and taking a step towards her.
"It's fate, honey. You'll find out soon enough." Jessica turned back to Sam. "Have you ever heard of the butterfly effect?"
"Ashton's second best movie." Dean shrugged.
"Yes, of course, one small mistake can cause all kinds of bad. What about it?" The younger brother pressed.
"If just one person dies before their time, alot of things that were supposed to happen, don't. The ripple effect from just one early death can affect hundreds of lives. And changing their fates changes even more fates until things become... Sincerely unfortunate and we have to hit the 'reset' button." Jessica explained.
"What does that mean?" Sam frowned.
"Usually? A mass kill-off. Like the Black Plague or amid-sized war or the universe's only Angel of Darkness single-handedly pulling off one of the biggest massacres in Human history. Something to wipe the board clean." The Reaper once again smirked at Eden as the trio's brows raised.
"You were responsible for that?" She growled.
"Kind of? We put the idea in your head, you just pulled it off. The universe owes you a great thanks." Jessica smiled.
Eden sneered, taking another step forward before Sam put his hand out in front of her.
"Not now." He whispered.
"So, your help in avoiding that again would be greatly appreciated... By everyone." The Reaper continued.
"You've just told me that the darkest thing I ever did in my whole life was down to you and now you want my help?" Eden scowled. "Hell, who needs to kill people off early? I'm a celestial being; I can track Reapers if needed. I might just go and help Rowena without all those early deaths."
"How about you maybe don't do that?" Dean retorted, giving her a look before turning back to Jessica. "If it's so bad, why don't you stop it?"
"You've met Billie, right?" She chuckled. "She's got rules. Clean hands. No interference. Well, no direct interference, anyway."
"I'm sorry, Billie is Death now?" Eden's brows raised. She looked to the boys who didn't appear all that surprised. "I've been here this whole time, you knew and no one bothered to tell me?"
"We had bigger fish to fry than relaying information back to you, okay? It slipped." Dean huffed. "Apparently, when you kill Death, the slot opens for a new one. When you kill a Reaper, they fill that slot. So Death two point O is down to you and Cas."
"Great..." Eden sighed.
"Look, we can't stop Rowena. But, you can." Jessica looked up at Sam.
"What, me?" Sam cocked a brow, pointing a lazy finger at his chest.
"Death keeps notebooks on all the ways a person might die, depending on their choices. Dean's seen his." Jessica smirked.
"I got a whole shelf." The older brother added.
"But, in Rowena McLeod's notebooks, her death is always the same. She's killed, Sam Winchester, by you." The Reaper informed him. Eden and Dean glanced to the younger brother, who had no idea what to think. "And on that note, that's about all I'll be good for. So, I'll leave the future of the Human race in your more-than-capable hands."
With that, Jessica disappeared.
"Bitch's got some nerve." Eden mumbled, looking back up to Sam. "So, you're gunna kill her once and for all. That sounds like it's going to be... Interesting."
"Uh, yeah. But, maybe we should focus on finding her and finding out why she's killing Reapers before we go trying to fulfill anything in Death's notebooks." Sam suggested, stuffing his hands into the pockets of his black FBI overcoat.

After more research, Sam had discovered that Rowena had been making her way through everyone associated with the pharmaceutical company's scandal - all bar one; the CEO. That meant there was only one place they were going to find Rowena.
But, yet again, Jessica had appeared next to Eden in the back of the Impala, informing them that the CEO's time of death had shifted to, more or less, right then.
