Chapter One Hundred and Ninety-Two - Empty Planet
At the silo, the four remaining Hunters exited the building. Sam was trying to get a hold of Dean, Willow or Castiel, but no one was answering.
Jack stumbled forward a few paces away from Sam, Eden and Jorden, his mouth agape as his eyes stared off into the trees.
"Sam? Eden?" He eventually called. "Was it just them?"
"I don't know..." Sam replied.
The Light Nephilim slowly turned around to face them, the corners of his lips turned down with worry.
In town, Eden felt the need to hold Jorden's hand a little tighter. In all her years, she'd never heard the Earth so silent.
She, Sam, Jack and Jorden looked around the desolate main street. Cars littered the roads, some with doors open or trunks; shopping bags filled with groceries were sat on the pavement, having fallen from vanishing hands. Strollers with no sign of mother or child were left abandoned. An old Volvo had it's alarm blaring, having hit a lamp post head on, leaving a huge dent in the car.
Eden sighed.
"Go hold Jack's hand for a bit, Flower." She instructed Jorden with a gentle voice, giving the child's hand a reassuring shake.
Jorden nodded, running over to catch up with her big brother.
She tapped his hand, drawing his attention away from the empty planet. He gave her a small smile, uncurling his fingers from the loose fist they'd formed, then gripped her hand as though it were the difference between life or death.
Eden made her way over to the Volvo, unfolded the crumpled hood and dug around until she found the right wire, ripping it from it's attachments. The car alarm instantly stopped as a result, just as the Impala pulled up on the other side of the road.
"Uncle Dean!" Jorden called out through a toothy grin, releasing Jack's hand to run to him as he got out of the driver's door.
"Hey, Kiddo..." He muttered, groaning as the little girl launched herself into his arms.
He adjusted her on his hip and made his way over to Sam, Jack and Eden.
The Dark Angel frowned at him, his lost expression and grieving eyes gave him away. She looked passed him at the Impala, seeing no passengers.
"You came alone?" She asked. "Where's Pigeon and Willow?"
The older brother looked down, placing the hand that wasn't supporting his niece on her back, pulling her into him protectively.
"Dean?" Sam pressed.
"He saved me." He said. "Billie was coming after us, and Cas summoned the Empty. It took her... And it took him. Cas is gone."
"Oh... No." Eden's voice quaked as tears so large entirely missed her cheek and fell straight to the tarmac beneath her. She held the back of her right hand over her mouth, the other on her hip, looking around the town aimlessly.
"What about Willow?" Jack asked. "Did it take her too?"
Dean squeezed his eyes shut, a single tear staining his left cheek.
"No... After Cas... I had her in my arms and..." He paused looked over to a sobbing Eden and a teary Sam and Jack. Eventually, his eyes fell and remained on Eden. "She disappeared... Just like everyone else. I'm so sorry, Vampy Pants. There was nothing I could do. It all happened so fast, I-"
Eden turned her back on the older brother, looked to the sky and screamed. Her vision began to blur with the light-headedness it all caused and she lost her balance, falling to the floor. She punched the road, her hair pooling around her face like a waterfall of blood.
Jorden began to cry. The hand Dean had on her back moved up to her head, tucking her face into the crook of his neck, softly shushing her and whispering soothing words into her ear as he too, silently cried.
"It's okay, Sweetness, I know. I'm so sorry." He soothed, gently bouncing her on his hip and running his fingers through her hair.
Jack was next to break.
As a tear on each side trickled down his cheeks, he squeezed his eyes shut, his head tormented with Eden's screaming.
Sam, though in tears as well, approached the Dark Angel, crouching down beside her to place a calming hand on her back. He didn't say a word. There wasn't anything he could say that would make her feel better.
With Eden safely tucked under Sam's supporting arm, the group made their way through the deserted streets, eventually finding a diner.
Sam left Eden under Jack's care and Dean put Jorden in the Nephilim's arms to check the place out on their own.
Inside, tables were filled with half-eaten food and beverages. Opposite them was a bar, where a beer tap had been left on; someone had evidently been pouring a glass when they vanished.
Above the bar was a TV, displaying the latest football game.
"Hey." Dean uttered, pointing to the screen to show his younger brother. The pitch was entirely empty, no cameras were moving or cutting to different angles and there wasn't a single sign of life in the stands. "Brings a whole new meaning to the term 'sudden death.'"
"Do you think we're it? All that's left?" Sam asked, half-rhetorically. Deep down, he knew the answer.
Dean reached over the bar, flicking the beer tap towards him to shut it off.
"Yeah." He scoffed lightly. "You, me, Eden, Jack and Jorden."
As the brothers continued their search, mostly for supplies in the diner, Jack walked in with Eden and Jorden.
The boy's body was as slouched and lifeless as it could be while trying to hold the two girls, the look of pure hopelessness in his empty gaze.
Dean had poured himself a large glass tankard of beer, leaning against the bar as he looked over to the three.
"Hey." Jack mumbled as he set Eden in a chair at one of the tables, placing Jorden gently down in one opposite. "So, um... What now?"
Sam had his back to the rest of his family, staring at another TV screen that displayed a news channel, the anchor's chair empty.
He closed his eyes, sighing as he turned back around.
"I did this." He said. "We could've just given Chuck what he wanted, you know, his grand finale. But I resisted. I pulled the thread. I thought we could beat this game, do it better. We tried to rewrite him, but the whole world paid the price. Cas paid the price. Willow paid the price."
"Sam, we can-"
"We can what?" The younger brother snapped, cutting Dean off. "There's nothing left, Dean! No one left to save. Everybody's gone!"
"You can't just give up." Jack retorted.
"What other choice do we have?" Sam raised his voice. "We need to summon Chuck. We need to tell him the game's over. He's won. And maybe he'll bring everyone back."
Later that night, outside of a hospital, Dean was sat on Baby's hood with his arms crossed.
"You think he'll show?" Sam asked, pacing the area.
"He better..." Dean mumbled.
They'd left Jack, Eden and Jorden at the diner, knowing that if they succeeded in what they were planning to do, Chuck would come to them to gloat. Or they'd realise the plan had worked when everyone reappeared.
"Hey, guys." The sickeningly nonchalant tones of Chuck's voice sounded a couple of dozen feet in front of them. "Enjoying a little alone time?"
Dean stood up properly, taking a step forward.
"Alright, Chuck. You win."
"Well, sure." The deity shrugged, lazily placing one foot in front of the other to approach them. "I always do. Me being me. Is that it, or..?"
"We'll give you what you want." Sam told him.
"That's right. This whole 'Cain-and-Abel' thing. Us dead. Whatever." Dean added. "I'll kill Sam, Sam'll kill me. We'll kill each other. Okay? You pick. But, first, you gotta put everything back the way it was; the people, the birds, Cas. You got to bring him back."
"We're surrendering." Sam nodded. "We're giving up."
"Yeah, no." Chuck scrunched his face up. "I mean, I appreciate the white flag, but frankly, it's too little, too late. I'm kind of enjoying this story now."
"You can't." Dean replied breathily.
"Oh, no." The deity tutted, pointing to himself. "See, I'm the almighty. I really can. I mean, picture it. The two of you, your little lapdogs; Jack and Eden... And Jorden. Shame I couldn't make her vanish too. That would've been..." He put his fingers to his lips, kissing them as though he were a chef. "Rotting on a lifeless planet, knowing it's this way because you wouldn't take a knee. Eternal shame, suffering and loneliness. Whew, that's deep. That's sophisticated. That's a page-turner."
With that, he gave one last smirk and disappeared.
The nest few days were bleak, to say the least.
Eden had barely left Willow's room. All she did was curl up on her bed and breathe in Willow's scent still on the bed sheets.
Jack had been more or less the same, spending his time laying on his bed, staring up at the ceiling.
Dean had spent his time drinking himself into unconsciousness. That day, with Jorden in one arm and a cup of coffee in his free hand, Sam walked into the library to see Dean passed out on the table with a half empty bottle of whiskey being used as his pillow.
"Dean. Hey!" He called. The older brother groaned, slowly lifting his head from the table as Sam placed Jorden down in a seat across from him and sat opposite. "You okay?"
"I feel terrific." Dean replied, picking himself up from where he'd been laying, the sound of empty beer bottles clinking together echoed through the room as he spoke.
Jorden frowned, looking around the room.
"What's that sound?" She asked.
"What sound, Sweetness?" Dean smacked his lips together, his mouth feeling like the rear end of a dog.
A few moments later, Jack walked in wearing blue-grey pyjamas, sharing his baby sister's expression.
"Guys, I'm... Feeling something weird." He announced.
"Yeah, me too, pal." Dean let out a heavy sigh, putting his head in his hand. "We need aspirin."
"Jorden just said she heard a noise, but we're not hearing it." Sam offered.
"I'm sensing a presence." The Light Nephilim replied. "There's something out there... Besides us."
"Me too." Jorden nodded.
"Something like people?" Sam pressed.
"I don't know."
"How are you sensing anything? Aren't you all powered down?" Dean managed to lift his head again to address the boy.
"I'm not sure." Jack blinked. "But, I feel it."
"Do you think you two can follow it if we go for a drive?" Sam asked, looking between the two Nephilims. Jorden nodded as Jack did. "Alright. I'll let Eden know we're headed out."
The drive had led the four to a gas station down Route Sixty-Six.
As Sam filled the Impala with gas, Jack took Jorden and headed into the store to scope it out and Dean headed for the bathrooms.
He was about to open the restroom door when he heard a whimpering.
Turning, he saw a shaggy, blond dog laying under some wooden pallets.
"Woah! Woah, woah, woah. Look at you!" He gasped, slowly crouching and approaching the animal. "Hey, wow!" He offered the dog his hand, letting him sniff before going in to stroke him. He laughed in his disbelief. "How did Chuck miss you? Whoever thought finding a dog would feel like a miracle? Come on, Miracle. Come here." He beckoned the dog closer, earning instant compliance. He picked him up and headed back to the car. "Sammy! Check it out!"
Sam stopped pumping the gas, his jaw slacking at the sight of the animal in Dean's arms.
"You found a dog?" He frowned, a small smile playing on his lips.
"Yeah! I guess Chuck didn't get everything." The pair were as surprised as each other.
"Miracle!" Jorden ran out of the store, straight to Dean's side with a massive grin on her face.
"I literally just named him that, how did you know?" Her Uncle frowned. In response, Jorden tapped the shell of her right ear, too busy reaching up on her tip-toes to fuss the dog to respond any other way. Dean looked back over at his brother. "I mean, maybe there's people he missed, you know? Look, either way, this guy's coming home with us."
"You're gunna let a dog sit in the Impala?" Sam cocked a brow, recalling his older brother's rules of the road.
"Relax, I'm not giving him shotgun... Unless you're cool with that." Dean retorted.
"I'll get Jack." Sam shook his head, a ghost of a smile still on his lips as he headed for the store.
Miracle whined, earning some fuss from the Winchester.
"Don't worry. He'll warm up to ya. Maybe we'll let you sleep in his room." Dean laughed, looking down to Jorden. "How about it, Littlest Vampy Pants? Let him sleep with your dad until your mom feels better?"
"Yeah!" Jorden giggled through her cheekiest grin, making Dean smirk as he opened the Impala's back door.
"Here we go. Good boy." The older brother groaned as he placed Miracle in the middle seat to give him some last few head scratches. "You know, believe it or not, but you're the best thing that's happened in the last few days. Yeah, you are. Good boy."
He released a throaty chuckle, lifting Jorden up to place her into the back seat next to the animal. But then, Miracle suddenly turned to dust and disappeared.
Dean looked out into the deserted nothingness, prompting Jorden to do the same.
There, they saw Chuck. He smirked to them and gave a lazy salute before he too, disappeared.
"Unbelievable." Dean growled on the dark night ride towards whatever Jack and Jorden had sensed. "Can't even save a friggin' dog."
"Hey, watch the language. Jorden doesn't need to hear that stuff." Sam protested, looking back to his daughter, curled up in the back seat with Jack's arms around her, both sleeping peacefully. "But, you know, maybe that's the point. No one left to help. No one but us."
They eventually pulled up outside a church; its sign reading 'St. Michael's', lit up by the incoming lightning storm.
"You sure about this, you two?" Sam asked, looking between Jack and down at Jorden, who's hand was in his. "Whatever you're picking up on is in there?"
"In there or very nearby." Jack replied, gazing up at the building. "Guys, I have no idea what we're walking into."
"Only one way we're gunna find out, right?" Dean sighed heavily, pushing the front gates open to enter the church.
The interior of the church was barely visible, only lit by a few candles at either end of the building and the lightning that came a few times a minute.
No one seemed to be there, except the Winchesters, Jack and Jorden. The only hint of another presence was Bibles littering the pews on various pages, like someone had been doing as much research as they possibly could.
The group of four had made it to the other end of the building when a voice sounded behind them.
"So... You survived." They turned around, seeing Michael still in Adam's vessel at the end of the aisle.
"Michael..." Sam's eyes were wide.
The Archangel slowly made his way towards them, the thunder and lightning lighting up his face menacingly.
"When the rapture first began, I took refuge here." He explained, holding out his hands to motion around him. "It is Saint Michael's, you may have noticed."
"Are you hiding out from your dad?" Dean gave a cocky retort.
"I'm sure he's aware I took your side against him. I've avoided using any powers that might attract his attention." Michael continued.
"And Adam?" Sam pressed.
"Gone... I'm sorry to say." The Archangel replied solemnly. "Exterminated by my father, like everyone else."
"Poor bastard never caught a break..." Dean mumbled, looking down to the floor.
Sam cleared his throat, looking between his brother and Jorden, who was still holding her father's hand.
"How did the four of you manage? I see my cousin has finally made it into the world. Hello, Jorden." Michael lazily waved a hand, barely even lifting it from his side as he looked to her.
"Hello." Jorden raised hers back in her motionless wave.
"Apparently your old man has a sense of humour." Dean replied. "He thought it'd be hilarious towatch the five of us on an empty planet."
"Five. Yes, where is Eden?" The Archangel frowned.
"We lost Cas and just after, your dad took Willow. Eden's made herself sick with the grief. She's at the Bunker." Sam sighed. Michael gave a simple nod of understanding. "What, are you, uh... Doing some reading?" He motioned to the books scattered around on the pews.
"I never spent much time on Earth. I was... Curious about the perception of God and Heaven."
"And?" Dean pressed.
"Amazingly, the believers loved him. They have for thousands of years. I guess my efforts were more effective than I'd hoped." He replied.
"Your efforts..." Sam clarified, raising his brows.
"When God left Heaven, I was certain of his return. So I made sure all of the Angels and Prophets burnished his image on Earth." Michael lifted his hands once more, looking around at all of the sculptures and stained glass in the building. "The all-knowing, all-seeing, all-caring God."
"Daddy's boy..." Dean smirked, earning an amused, but slightly sad singular chuckle from the Archangel.
"And now?" Jack asked. "After seeing what Chuck's done?"
Michael bowed his head in shame.
"We reached out to you." Dean added. "You ignored us."
"That was then." Michael said, looking back up at him. "This is now. Tell me what you need me to do."
"Can you help my mom?" Jorden spoke for the first time. "She's so sad..."
The Archangel gave an uneasy half-smile.
"I can try."
