Chapter One Hundred and Fifty-Four - Date Night
"Eden, I am so sorry for what happened back there..." Sam sighed on the car ride home.
"It wasn't your fault. You don't need to apologise." She mumbled, slumping down in the centre back seat.
"I feel like I do. I know this probably felt like the Becky thing all ove-"
"It did." Eden interrupted. "But that wasn't your fault either."
"Will you please just let me say my piece? And then we never have to talk about this again." Sam huffed, earning silence in return. "I feel awful about what you had to see back there. With Cindy and... I know - now for sure - that this brought up some long-forgotten crap for you and I'm sorry, whether you want me to say it or not, I am. I love you and no spell or anything will ever change that."
"I know. I love you, too."
Back at the Bunker, the three found Dean in the War room, looking a little discombobulated.
"Hey! How was Arkansas?" He asked, composing himself.
"Arkansas was..." Sam scoffed as he trudge down the stairs. "It was... Weird."
"That's one word for it." Eden commented.
"Heard you wore a cardigan." The older brother smirked to Sam as he walked over to wrap an arm over Eden's shoulders.
The Dark Angel and the younger brother gave a warning glare to Castiel.
"Yeah, I told him about the cardigan." He shrugged.
"Great. Thanks." Sam breathed.
"And the wife." Dean added, squeezing Eden's shoulders a little. "Pissin' off my Vampy Pants with an out-of-the-blue wife just seems to be a running thing for you, doesn't it? He said you were, uh, 'really happy.'"
"Thanks." Sam uttered to Castiel again.
"Where's Jack?" The Angel opted to quickly change the subject.
"In his room." Dean replied, prompting Cas to turn away and walk towards the bedrooms. "Really happy, huh?"
"I mean... I guess I was happy, but it wasn't real. I'm happy with the woman I have." Sam threw a small smile in Eden's direction as he shrugged off the overnight bags on his shoulders, placing them down on the map table.
"Well, not a lot of happy going on around here." Dean sighed, letting go of Eden.
"I hate this place right now... I hate it." The younger brother hissed, his eyes welling up as his love moved over to hug his waist. "Everywhere I look, I see them - I see Maggie. I guess that's why I'm so desperate to get out of here - why I kept running us ragged... But, I've gotta stop that. I can't keep running. This is my home - this is our home. I think I just need some time."
"Okay." Dean replied, patting Sam's shoulder. "Here's an idea. Why don't you two just... Go somewhere. Get out of here, get out of this headspace. Go somewhere nice for a week or whatever, no hunting, no thinking, just romantic and relaxing."
Eden looked up at Sam, resting her chin on his chest as he looked down at her.
"Yeah. That sounds like a good idea." He nodded. "But maybe not right now. With Jack the way he is, I don't want to just disappear and leave you guys to deal with whatever comes out of all this alone."
"What did you end up doing, anyway?" Eden asked.
"Uh, I took the kid to see Donatello - see if he couldn't make some sense out of all this." Dean replied.
"And..?" She pressed.
"He doesn't think his soul is entirely gone, but he knows there's something not right. I think we've just gotta keep an eye on him, you know?" He sighed, shoving his hands into the front pockets of his jeans as the pair in front of him nodded. "Hey, if you wanna put your trip off, that's cool with me. Just make sure you go on it. When even was the last time you went on a date or did something that didn't involve killing things or furthering the crap-heap plot that is our lives?"
"Um..." Eden frowned in thought. "I... Don't actually remember. Does alone time in Vamp Town count?"
"No." Dean stared blankly.
"Then... Probably our first date, before it was interrupted by Alexander." Sam shrugged, chuckling in slight disbelief. "Damn, we really need to get out more."
"Apparently so..." Eden sighed, then frowned at a realisation. "Wait... That first date was just after the Becky thing. Maybe we should stop only going on dates after you get a wife."
Sam matched her frown, thinking back.
"Was it? Damn, you're right." He chuckled, scratching the nape of his neck awkwardly. "How about I only do the wife thing once more."
"Sounds good to me." Eden smirked.
"Well, there you go." Dean waved a hand. "If you don't go on a vacation or whatever right now, then at least go out and have some fun. Go watch a movie, stargaze, even just go for a drive, I don't care. But, you're banned from the Bunker for the next few hours at least."
Sam and Eden gave a gentle laugh, nodding their heads.
"Fine. I'll go get changed." She said, leaning up to kiss Sam's cheek before heading towards the bedrooms.
Dean buried a hand into the pocket of his jeans, fishing out the Impala keys to hand to Sam. Before the younger brother could take them, the older pulled them out of his reach slightly.
"You can take her. Just don't screw in her." He warned.
"You're gross." Sam screwed up his nose, grabbing the keys.
"So... What did you wanna do?" He asked, closing the bedroom door.
"Something... Human. I don't know. Just something that'll make us forget how screwed up our lives are for a bit." Eden sighed, slumping her body down on the bed with her legs hanging over the edge.
"A 'Human' date..." Sam frowned in thought, gently pacing the space between the bed and the door. Eventually, he stopped and smiled. "I think I've got it. Wear something practical. We'll leave in twenty."
Eden grinned, jumping up off the bed. She practically skipped over to him and kissed his cheek before making her exit.
As soon as he heard the door close next door, he shut the bedroom one and pulled out his phone, going straight to his contacts.
After a couple of rings, the call was answered.
"Hello, Samuel."
"Rowena. I need your help."
"Of course you do. You know I'm always at the Winchesters' beck and call." The Scottish Witch replied rather sarcastically. "How can I be of assistance today?"
"I was wondering if you knew of a spell..."
Eden fished through her closet until she found something she felt was perfect to Sam's 'wear something practical' request - an oversized black knitted sweater, her favourite pair of black skinny jeans and a pair of ankle boots. She put her hair up in a half ponytail and slipped a circular amulet that Gabriel had given her a few thousand years prior round her neck, her fingertips grazing over it as she remembered that day fondly.
"You ready?" Sam asked, poking his head round the door.
"Yeah. I think so. Practical enough for you?" She spread her arms out a little, looking down at her outfit.
Sam smiled.
"It's perfect. You look gorgeous. I'll meet you in the War room in five, okay? I just gotta do something."
Eden nodded, watching him leave before heading to Jack's room, where he sat with Willow on his bed with the Dark Angel's laptop between them.
"Hey, you two. How are you doing?" She smiled, leaning against the door frame.
"We're okay. Willow's showing me this thing she found online." Jack gave a small smile. "Did you know there are books about Sam and Dean?"
Eden's eyes widened.
"Um... Yes. Chuck wrote them. Heaven calls them the 'Winchester Gospels.' I wouldn't look too far into it. You might find the realm of fanfiction and, believe me, there is no escaping that rabbit hole." She chuckled nervously. "Look, Sam and I are going out for the evening, so I just thought I'd stop by and wish you both
goodnight in case you're asleep when we get back."
"Okay. Have fun. You two deserve it." Willow grinned.
"We will." Eden smiled. "I love you both."
"We love you, too." Jack replied.
"Ready?" Sam asked as she walked into the War room, seeing him stood by the map table.
On the table, was a scarf and a pair of ear defenders.
"Yeah. What's this?" She replied, waving a finger in the direction of the items.
"Well, our date is a surprise. So we're going to the car and you're going to wear these. Hopefully, it'll work... What with your super senses and all." He hummed, picking them up.
They walked, arms linked, to the garage. Sam stopped her by the passenger side door and turned her around, placing the scarf over her eyes.
"Can you see anything?" He asked.
"No. It's weird." Eden frowned, huffing.
"It's only for a little while." Sam chuckled, putting the ear defenders on her. "Hear anything?"
"It's muffled, but yes." She shrugged.
Sam sighed.
"It'll have to do."
He opened the car door for her and made sure she got in safely before going to the driver's side, patting the small vial he had hidden in the inside pocket of his navy blue jacket.
After about four hours of 'can I take these bloody things off now?', 'are we there yet?' and 'can I at least guess where you're taking me?', they got to their destination.
Sam pulled up into the parking lot and looked over at her as he switched the engine off, smirking.
"Can you hear anything besides my voice?" He asked.
Eden hesitated, listening out.
"No... I don't like it. Is this what Humans hear? How do you people cope with being so deaf?" She frowned.
Sam laughed, shaking his head.
"Not sure. But, anyway, we're here. But you can't take the blindfold or ear defenders off just yet."
Eden let out a stroppy, child-like 'hmpf' as she crossed her arms over her chest, making Sam laugh again.
They stood a few dozen feet away from the entrance to a large building. The smell of food and feet, accompanied with the barely audible sound of people and music overtook Eden's senses.
Sam stood behind her and removed the ear defenders, shortly followed by the scarf from her eyes.
Eden blinked a few times as her vision re-focused enough for her to see large orangey-brown wooden double doors under white-lit, curved text reading 'Pinstripes'. Underneath that; 'bowling, bocce, bistro' in unlit red.
She grinned.
"You know, I've never actually been bowling before."
"Seriously?" Sam scoffed in slight disbelief. "All throughout Human history and you've never been bowling?"
"Not even once." Eden shook her head. "Was kinda too busy fighting monsters. But, this is perfect, Sam. Perfectly Human. Thank you."
She turned around and hugged his neck, prompting him to wrap his arms around her waist.
"You're welcome." He hummed. "But, that isn't the entire surprise."
"Oh?" Eden frowned, pulling away from him. Sam nodded, reaching into the inside pocket of his jacket for the vial, containing a translucent, deep red liquid. "What on earth is that?"
"So, I called Rowena while you were changing." He explained. "Asked her if she knew of a spell that could alter someone's dietary needs. She knew of something, but it's only temporary. So... For tonight, you eat and drink anything and everything you want."
Eden's eyes lit up and quickly welled with tears, her mouth falling open.
"No way." She gasped.
"You wanted a Human date. So, we're going bowling and then we're going to dinner. There's a dress and shoes packed in the trunk for you to change into when we're done here." Sam nodded, smiling.
"You... You're incredible, you know that?" Eden breathed, jumping him into another hug as the tears dropped from her waterline, down her cheeks. "I love you so bloody much, Sam Winchester."
"I love you, too." He chuckled, nuzzling his face in the crook of her neck. "Drink up."
She nodded, pulling away from him to take the vial. She wiped her tears and pulled off the tiny cork and gave him one last look before pouring the contents into her mouth.
The taste was bitter, but not entirely intolerable. She swallowed it down and frowned as she waited for something to happen.
"How do we know it's worked?" She asked.
"No idea. Rowena didn't say. How about we go inside, get a drink and test it?" Sam suggested, earning a nod.
He smiled, holding out his arm for her to take and led her into the building.
People bustled about the large room. Straight ahead of them was a counter with a couple of attendants waiting to serve customers. Further into the building, they saw three of the eight lanes vacant.
"Good evening, welcome to Pinstripes. Two for bowling?" A young woman with furiously neon pink hair and snakebite piercings greeted them.
"Yeah, please." Sam nodded, pulling out his wallet from the front left pocket of his jeans.
After getting their bowling shoes and a jokey comment from Eden about how they looked like they belonged to a clown, they walked over to the lane in the far right corner of the room, lit dimly due to the lights above them being broken.
Sam sat down at one of the two bench seats and typed some things into the touch screen keyboard, looking up at the screen hanging from the ceiling every once in a while.
"You're up first. I'll get us drinks." He smiled, getting up.
Eden nodded, closing her eyes contently as he kissed her temple before walking off.
After watching him walk away towards the bar on the opposite side of the building, she picked up a pearlescent sky blue ball from the collection between the bench seats, looked back for Sam, then threw the ball, earning herself a strike with the force she'd used - a little more than Human, by accident.
"Oops." She sniggered, watching the score show up on the screen above her.
Sam came back a couple of minutes later with two beers in hand. He looked up at the screen and raised his brows at the score.
"Don't be too impressed. It's not beginner's luck or anything. I might've accidentally used a little more strength than Human..." Eden chuckled, scratching the nape of her neck with one hand as the other took a beer from him.
"I'll be impressed all the same." He shrugged, kissing her hair before taking a sip of his drink, prompting Eden to do the same. "Thoughts?"
"Not bad." She shrugged, wiping the corner of her mouth with the pad of her thumb. "Tastes like it smells."
"Any bad side effects? Is the spell working?" The Winchester pressed.
Eden wiggled her midsection a bit, waiting for the oncoming feeling of her stomach dropping. When it never came, she smirked and nodded.
"All good."
As the evening progressed, Eden quickly got the hang of not using any excessive strength. Her game struggled a little, but Sam was more than willing to help out.
He stood behind her, pressing his body against hers, his arms around her, his hands on hers, guiding her throw.
"Where'd you learn to bowl?" She smirked, turning her head just enough for him to watch her lips.
"Bobby took us for a couple of birthdays. I'm half surprised Dean didn't ask to join us when I told him. He loves it." Sam chuckled, tapping his fingers on her hips before he pulled away.
A few more rounds and even more rounds of beer, it began to get a little late.
"Hungry?" The Winchester asked as they finished up.
"I think so..."
Sam nodded, throwing his arm around her shoulders, leading her out to the car.
He opened the trunk and handed her a black duffel bag, grabbing another for himself.
"Quick costume change and then you can drive us to the restaurant." He smirked, handing her the car keys.
Eden punched the air, hissing a 'yesssss', that he cracked up at.
She walked into the women's restroom at the bowling alley, eager to find out what Sam had picked out for her.
After locking herself in a stall and unzipping the duffel bag on the closed toilet seat, she frowned at the note that appeared through the zip opening.
'You say black is your colour, but don't forget... So is red. Willow found this in the back of your closet a while back and I just had to see you in it. I hope it's okay. I love you. Sam xx'
Eden smiled at it, setting it aside to reveal the floor length, bright red, low-cut satin gown and a pair of heels covered in black rhinestones.
"I forgot I even bought this..." She mumbled to herself, taking it from its neatly folded position in the bag.
As Eden walked back out towards the car, she saw Sam leaning against the hood in a simple black suit and white dress shirt combo, the top button undone above a loosened tie. Hearing the heels clicking against the asphalt, he turned, his jaw dropping when he saw her.
"What?" She smirked.
"You look absolutely stunning." He hummed, slipping his hand around her waist to bring her in for a kiss.
"Suppose you'll have to thank Willow for that." The Dark Angel chuckled, placing another kiss on his lips, spinning the car keys around on her finger before moving to the trunk to dump her duffel bag. "You look entirely edible, yourself."
"Maybe wait for actual food this time." Sam smirked, cocking a brow at her from the passenger side of the Impala.
At the restaurant, Eden requested Sam take the lead on ordering food, telling him that she trusted his taste buds.
For drinks, they stuck to beer, but agreed that they'd broaden horizons when they got home, as they were sure Dean wouldn't want to miss a drinking opportunity with Eden.
The Dark Angel enjoyed everything put in front of her - particularly desserts - and wouldn't stop gushing about them on the drive back to Lebanon.
For the journey back, Eden had an idea.
They were passing Waconda Lake anyway, so she decided to park up in a quiet spot that overlooked the moonlit water.
"What are you doing?" Sam asked.
"Just... Didn't want the night to end just yet." She sighed contently, leaning back in the seat. "When was the last time it was like this? Nothing going on, beautifully peaceful, a gorgeous view, just the two of us?"
"Not long after you became Eden again. We were in the middle of that rough patch and Dean texted you to come fix our crap because it was Valentine's Day and I was a mess." The Winchester replied. "I mean, our 'gorgeous view' was a motel room, but that night? We were just talking and dancing and, for a while, it was perfect."
"Until Dean crashed the party." Eden smirked, resting the back of her head on the bench seat as she turned to look at him. "But, yes, I remember. Seems like ages ago."
"Three years ago. Give or take." Sam sighed.
He held out his arm, silently beckoning for her to curl up with him.
The leather beneath them creaked as Eden moved, resting her head on Sam's chest. He put his feet up on the edge of the seat, half of his back on the door, half still against the seat. Her gown doubled up as a blanket for the both of them, the crimson satin almost glowing as the moon reflected off it through the windshield.
"Tonight has been incredible." The Dark Angel uttered. "One of the best of my life, I think."
"Seriously?" Sam cocked a brow, looking down at her.
"Seriously." She nodded. "Spending time with you, being able to eat and drink with you like we're a normal couple. Even just sat here watching the lake - it's perfect."
"I think so, too." He smiled, resting his cheek on her hair.
The pair sat in silence for a minute or two as they watched the water, basking in each other's company.
"I love you, Sam..." Eden mumbled, accompanying it with a sigh as thoughts invaded her mind.
"I love you, too." He frowned. "What's wrong? You sound... I don't know, off?"
"I'm fine. Suppose I just can't help thinking about everything we've been through. We don't get to do this sort of thing enough. There's always something going on. We barely get a minute to actually be a couple." She replied, sitting up a little.
Sam's hand had been on her lower arm, but as she rose, it fell to her back. He opted to flex his fingers, delicately tracing indistinct patterns over her dress.
"Well... How about after we take our vacation, we make a promise to do this more often. How does that sound?" He offered.
Eden gave a small smile, looking up at him through big eyes.
She leaned in as he did, connecting their lips in a soft kiss that didn't last long. It heated as Eden gathered her dress and threw her leg over both of his. Sam's hands found her hips as hers cupped his face, the feeling of his five o'clock shadow grazing her silky skin sending shivers up her arms.
"Back seat?" She smirked against his lips, their eyes remaining closed.
Sam let out a low chuckle.
"Dean will kill us if he finds out."
"He can try."
