Chapter One Hundred and Fifty-Five - Wayward Kids Part One
Sam and Eden both found themselves awake early one morning. They sat at the table in the kitchen, Sam with a coffee and his laptop, Eden with a glass of blood and a small pile of newspapers.
"Mornin' sunshines." Dean said, walking into go straight to the coffee machine.
"Hey." The pair uttered.
"Whatcha looking at? Porn? Sex tapes? Nip slips?"
"Not everyone is you, Dean." Eden sent a playful glare to his back.
"And the internet is more than just naked people." Sam added, turning back to address his brother. "You do know that, right?"
"No. I didn't know that." Dean retorted, earning a heavy sigh and a shake of Sam's head as he turned back around.
"Think I've found something." The younger brother huffed. "Come check this out."
Eden frowned, slipping out of her chair opposite him to look over his shoulder as Dean approached.
"So, this girl. Her body was found just outside Big Creek State Park in Iowa - covered in bite marks. The police are saying it's an animal attack..."
"But?" Dean pressed.
"But, I did some digging and I found that there weren't a lot of bodies, but a lot of people do go missing in that park." Sam continued, pulling up an incident report.
"Look at this. Park Ranger back in o-six, a poacher in ninety-eight and on and on and on. I mean, I've only gone back to nineteen forty-three and I've already found fifty-four missing people.
"Big Creek State Park, you said?" Eden frowned, moving to sit next to him.
"Yeah. No one seems to have made any connections, though. Everyone's just thinking its animals." The younger brother replied.
"I worked on a case not far from there." The Dark Angel uttered, wracking her brain as she thought back. "Yes. It was a few hikers back in eighty-four. Never found what caused it, though. Got called in on another case after this one went cold."
"Well... Sounds like our kind of thing." Dean commented, walking over to sit where Eden had been previously. "You sure you're up for it? I mean, you wanted to take some time and you're adamant on putting off that vacation."
"Na, I'm good." Sam shook his head. "I think the date last week gave me some time to just... You know, forget everything existed for a night. Honestly, I'm good."
"Alright. Well, let's hit it." The older brother shrugged, sipping his coffee.
"Alright. I'll grab Cas." Sam said, closing his laptop.
"He actually left." Dean interjected as Sam was getting up. "Early this morning."
"What?" The younger brother frowned.
"Why?" He and Eden asked.
"I don't know. Something about being cooped up in the Bunker for a few weeks. We all need to stretch our legs, I get it." Dean shrugged once more.
"Alright. Then... Jack." Sam suggested.
"Um... I don't want Jack on this." The older brother pointed an aimless finger at his brother. "Donatello might've said he's fine, but he's got his mojo back and his powers have gotten us into trouble in the past. Remember the security guard? So, I just wanna make sure that, you know, he's right... Before we put him back out there."
"Yeah, I'm not sure about that either. He's a little vulnerable right now." Eden added.
"Fine." Sam huffed. "Willow? She said she wanted to be a Hunter, right? Well, she needs experience. One of her mom's cold cases might be a good place to start."
"I see your point... But do we really want to leave Jack alone in the Bunker to stew on his emotions? Or possible lack thereof?" The Dark Angel cocked a brow, sipping her blood.
"Good point..." Sam sighed. "Alright. Just the three of us, then."
After packing up and getting ready to leave, the three went to the library, where they found Jack and Willow sat at one of the smaller side tables on the left side of the room, reading by lamp light.
"Hey, guys. How we doing?" Dean asked, jogging up the stairs from the War room with Sam and Eden in tow.
"We're good. Just reading up on some lore." Willow smiled, looking up at them from her book entitled 'Sirens: Creatures of the Deep'.
"That's... Awesome, guys. Shows some good initiative." Sam nodded his approval.
"Listen, we're heading out on a case."
"And... You don't want me to come." Jack rather stated than asked.
"Truth is..."
"Little Vampy Pants hasn't completed her basic Hunter training yet and we thought you might be able to help her with that." Dean cut his brother off, earning a look from Eden. "Besides, we don't wanna leave the Bunker empty in case mom or one of the other Hunters call and need help, so... Also, this place is long overdue for a restock, so you two have a mission - should you choose to accept it - go to the grocery store, get us whatever we need, whatever you guys need. I made you a list."
The older brother handed the Nephilim a sheet of yellow paper as Willow placed her book down on the table beside her.
"Our mission is shopping..." Jack frowned at the list. "Beer, TP, eggs, beer again..."
"Twice." Sam commented.
"Yeah." Dean grinned.
"That's just the little detail." Eden waved a dismissive hand. "We're trusting the both of you to look after any Hunters who come this way and help them wherever you can."
Jack placed the list down in his lap, giving the three adults a smile.
"I'll do it." He nodded affirmingly.
"I suppose I have nothing better to do." Willow shrugged. "Brother/sister shopping trip?"
"Brother/sister shopping trip." Jack repeated, nodding again.
"Great!" Dean clapped his hands together. "We'll be in touch."
The two brothers were already making their exit as Eden raised her brows, watching them leave before turning back to her surrogate kids.
"If you need anything - and I mean anything... If something comes up that you don't think you can handle or whatever, just call me and I'll be right there. I'm all healed up, so I'm just a teleport away." She told them, pointing at each of them in turn.
"Understood." Jack nodded for a third time.
"Nothing will happen, mom." Willow chuckled. "But, sure. If it'll make you feel better, I'll call if even the slightest little thing does."
"Good. I love you both. Stay safe. Don't do anything I wouldn't." Eden shot them a playful glare before smirking and walking off.
"Well, that's the food shopping cancelled then." Willow mumbled.
"I heard that!" The Dark Angel called back.
As soon as the Bunker door closed, Willow looked to Jack.
"How about we get the groceries out of the way and then we make a pillow fort in the Dean Cave?" She suggested.
"What's a pillow fort?" Jack frowned.
The young Vampire chuckled, shaking her head.
"You've got a lot to learn, my young Padawan."
Willow wasn't entirely sure whether the look on Jack's face was anxiety or confusion or a mix of the two as they walked up to the grocery store. Even more so when they saw a handwritten sign on the door saying 'out to lunch' with a smiley face below it.
"Great..." The Vampire huffed, throwing up the hood on her grey sweatshirt as Jack checked the time on his phone.
"What do we do now?" He asked, shoving the device back into his pocket.
"Go and find somewhere to sit and look like public nuisances until the store reopens." She replied, walking off back the way they'd come.
"Hey!" A girl's voice came from behind them, grabbing their attention.
The girl in question had dark hair and a maroon fur-lined jacket on. She looked no more than seventeen, stood between another girl with platinum blonde hair and a rather nerdy looking boy staring down at a video on his phone.
"Do you know them?" Willow asked, looking between the three approaching them and the Nephilim.
"No. I don't." Jack replied. "Let's go and say hello."
Before Willow could protest, he was closing the gap between them with an overly-friendly smile on his face.
"Hello!" He said, holding up a hand.
The platinum blonde girl on the left also held up a hand, looking a little awkward as she struggled with a paper tray of to-go food and drinks.
"Are you guys lost?" The first girl wondered.
"No, we're just waiting for the store to re-open." Willow quickly interjected, grabbing Jack by the sleeve of his beige jacket.
"You live with Sam, Dean and Eden." The nerdy boy realised. "Right? But... They're not here right now."
"Yeah. What's it to you?" Willow scoffed.
"Are they fighting ghosts?" The boy asked, eagerly.
Willow snorted.
"Don't believe all the ghost stories you hear, do you?"
"What's a ghost?" Jack quickly added. "We should go."
The Nephilim looked to Willow, who nodded in agreement and turned to leave.
"Hey. It's cool." The blonde girl smirked, stepping towards them. "We know... About their whole 'Hunter' thing."
"Oh! Good. I don't like to lie. I don't like it when we have to lie. It makes my stomach hurt... Like, when you have to burp, but you can't burp. Yeah..." Jack smiled, looking to Willow who lulled her head into one of her hands that had previously been folded across her chest.
"So... You guys need something?" The first girl pressed, shoving her fingers into the front pockets of her brown chinos.
"We do. But the store is closed." Jack replied.
"Not anymore." She smiled, holding up a set of keys.
"Do I wanna know why you have the keys to the store?" Willow narrowed her eyes.
"Her parents own it." The blonde girl told her, earning a small nod.
Inside, the two girls - the blonde now known to them as Max and the brunette as Stacy - leant on the counter watching Jack roam around, looking at various items with the utmost curiosity. Willow dawdled behind him with a basket and the nerdy boy; Eliot followed in the adjacent aisle.
"I've been watching these guys called the Ghostfacers. You heard of 'em?" He asked, hopping up to sit on one of the shelves.
"No." Jack replied, placing a box of cherry pie into Willow's basket.
"I have. Sam told me they're total weirdoes and frauds. They've had to save those dumbass' lives a bunch of times and now they're making money off the crap Sam and Dean taught them. It's pathetic." The Vampire mumbled.
"Oh..." Eliot looked more than a little disheartened. "Yeah, they look like total dweebs. Definitely not awesome. I was reading one of their ghost hunting books not too long ago. Thought it all sounded a little too familiar."
"I like books, too." Jack commented, placing another pie into the basket. "I've been reading about zombies."
"Zombies are real?" The boy gasped.
"No... Not really. It's kinda disappointing. But, there are other monsters." Jack replied.
"Like what?"
"Vampires, like Willow-"
"Wait, you're a Vampire?" Eliot's eyes widened to the point Willow suspected they might drop out of their sockets.
"Great... Thanks, Jack." She sighed. "Yes, I'm a Vampire. No, I won't eat you, no I don't spontaneously combust in the sunlight - it just feels like a bad sunburn. Stakes won't kill me, neither will garlic, crucifixes, holy water or any of that other crap. Good talk. Moving on."
"I'm sorry. I got a little carried away." The Nephilim frowned to himself.
"It's whatever. Continue if you must." Willow waved a dismissive hand, too busy looking at items on shelves to make eye contact.
"Uh... Werewolves, Shapeshifters - I've seen one of those - Djinn, Ruguru... That's a funny name." Jack smiled, chuckling to himself. "Wraths, Sirens, Demons, Ghouls... All sorts of things."
"And you know about all of them?" Eliot asked as Willow took the items to the cash register.
"Well... Between Willow and I, probably. We've been studying." Jack replied.
"Jack... Willow..." The boy placed a hand on Jack's shoulder. "Will you be my best friends?"
"Dude... Stop stalking them." Stacy from before ordered as she scanned the items.
"Sorry, ever since he found out about this stuff, he's been a bit obsessed."
"It's fine." Jack smiled.
"Do you ever, like, hang out?" Max frowned from her perch on the counter.
"Well, we have movie nights on Tuesdays." The Nephilim shrugged. "Dean usually picks. I've seen Lost Boys, like, thirty-six times."
"I mean with kids your own age." The blonde girl elaborated.
"Well, I'm two." Jack retorted. "Willow's twenty-one but looks fourteen. It's hard to blend in with people our age."
The three teens looked among each other with unreadable expressions.
"Okay." Stacy shrugged. "Well, we're going to this cool place tomorrow if you wanna chill."
"It's this old farmhouse outside of town. No one goes there." Max smirked, jumping off the counter.
"So we can talk about monsters." Eliot grinned.
"And other non-freak things." Stacy nodded.
"I... Think I'd like that." Jack smiled, looking down at Willow. "Can we go?"
"What if other Hunters come by and need our help?" She cocked a brow.
"We'll only be gone a few hours. You'll be back in no time." The dark-haired girl interjected.
Willow looked between her and a hopeful Jack, sighing when she saw the look in his eyes.
"Fine... Only a few hours, though. My social battery can only take so much." She huffed.
"Great. That'll be thirty-seven, o-eight, but for the beer, I need to see some ID." Stacy gave an awkward smile.
Willow rolled her eyes, reaching into the left hand pocket of her hoodie for her purse, pulling out a learner's permit.
"Oh crap, you really are twenty-one." Max mouth-shrugged, earning a sarcastic, forced smile from the Vampire as Jack handed over the money.
"See you guys tomorrow." Eliot grinned, waving them off.
"That was insufferable..." Willow groaned, walking down the street with a paper bag under each arm.
"I think they were nice." Jack hummed.
"You think everyone is nice." The Vampire smirked, nudging his arm with her elbow.
After taking the groceries back to the Bunker and putting them away, the pair set off to the farmhouse the teens had been talking about.
"We don't have to do this, you know. We could just go home and chill instead." Willow huffed as they approached the door.
"I'm good. This could be exciting. An actual, normal, Human interaction." Jack replied, struggling to hold the pile of lore books he'd opted to bring. "Do you want to do this?"
"Honestly? Not really. But you do and mom told us to keep an eye on each other. So, knock away."
