Chapter Forty-One - Answers

The phone rang for the sixty-fourth time.
Elizabeth sat shaking on her bed in the Bunker, hugging her knees, watching the 'Impala 2' letters go black once again.
She couldn't bring herself to lean over and pick it up.
She wasn't exactly sure how long it was between the last call and Sam bursting through her bedroom door, seeing her broken state, but it couldn't have been long.
"She's in here!" She heard him yell, but barely. Everything seemed muffled.
He ran over, sitting on the bed and scooping her up into his strong, protective grasp.
"Hey..." He whispered, running his fingers through her hair. "Baby, it's okay. I've got you. You're okay."
Dean and Castiel ran in, the scene unfolding before them making their hearts ache.
They came and sat on the bed, not bothering to say anything, just that they were there for her both literally and figuratively.

"You gotta help us figure out what the Hell's happening to her, man." Dean pleaded with his Angel later on that night.
They were sat at the dining table in the kitchen, Dean with a beer in hand.
"If I knew where to begin, I'd be there now." Cas sighed.
Dean frowned in thought.
"Is there any way you could... I dunno, tap into her mind like you did with that old guy who was making cartoons happen? See these visions and crap for yourself?" He asked, sipping his beer.
"The last time I did that I had my own grace and was at full power." Cas sighed, pausing to think. "Having said that, it seems like the only way we're going to find out what's going on."

The older brother and the Angel walked back into Elizabeth's room, where she was resting her head on Sam's chest as they laid together.
The younger brother frowned at the intrusion, silently asking what was going on.
Cas walked over to Elizabeth's bedside, crouching down and touching her upper arm.
"Elizabeth." He soothed. She turned over, laying her head on the pillow to look at him. "If you don't mind, I want to try something, to see if I can figure out what's happening to you."
Elizabeth simply nodded, sitting up.
Castiel held out a hand for her, leading her over to the desk chair.
He stood behind her, taking a deep breath as he placed his middle and index fingers on either side of her temples.
Bright, glowing orange veins protruded down either sides of Elizabeth's face, originating at Castiel's fingers.

Castiel looked around. He was in a dark, cavernous space, a sleeping girl, who couldn't have been older than six, laid on a stone bed, tied down with chains forged in Heaven.
He turned when the cave opened up behind him, but his attention was drawn back to the girl when her chains fell from her body, onto the floor.
She sat up, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes.
Cas studied the girl intently, now that she had some light on her.
The off-white tunic she wore was tied in the middle with what appeared to be a vine and her feet were dirty and bare. Her skin was pale, almost translucent. Almost every sign pointed to malnutrition, except for the fact that she wasn't skin and bone. She was skinny, yes. But not a skeleton. Also, if malnourished, her burgundy hair would've been a lot thinner. But there it was, thick and glossy, trailing down her back in gentle waves. When her icy blue eyes caught the sunlight seeping into the cave, they looked almost white, like a zombie from a movie or something. But somehow, they still looked beautiful. She looked beautiful.
"Eden, it's time for you to show your uncle what you can do." A male voice spoke.
"Yes, uncle." The girl's tiny voice replied.
She hopped off the stone bed and wandered out of the cave, squinting at the light difference and, before Cas knew it, she'd disappeared in the blink of an eye.

The image melted away, sending Castiel into a new one.
A much younger Eden was crouched down a few feet in front of him in a garden he knew all too well. It was the Garden. She couldn't have been more than four years old. To her left, was a tiny rattle that resembled the tail of a Rattlesnake. He sensed someone coming up behind him, so turned around.
When he saw who it was, he gasped.
It was Eve.
She smiled down at the girl, watching as the toddler placed her delicate little hand on the grass. Cas frowned in curiosity, taking a step closer to see what she was doing.
Eden closed her eyes, feeling the blades of grass tickle between her fingers. She smiled, feeling her magic flow through the dirt, only to come back up. Castiel watched on as flowers sprang up under her hand. For the second time, he gasped.
"What are you, Eden?" He asked rhetorically.
Eve walked passed him, crouching down at her side.
"Well done, my precious one. Your Garden is looking more and more beautiful every day." She smiled, smoothing down Eden's hair, decorated with tiny flowers of various colours.
Eden smiled up at Eve, her cheeks bright red with seemingly eternal happiness.
"Thank you, mama." She said.
"Time to go, Flower. It's time to eat." Eve told her.
Eden picked up her rattle and got up with an excited shriek. As she ran off, more flowers grew inside every foot step.
Eve smiled as she watched her child run away from her. She looked around the garden, brushing her fingers up against a tree as she walked in the direction Eden had disappeared into.
"My beautiful Garden of Eden." She mused.
Castiel's eyes widened as he was brought out of the image.

The next image was in some sort of barn, much closer to present day.
In the middle of the barn was a semi-conscious Elizabeth, fully formed as he knew her now, tied to a chair.
Alexander was there, standing over her with concern in his gaze. Another woman was there too. A woman Castiel didn't recognise. She was a short, slim woman with flowing orange hair.
"Are you sure you want me to do this, Mister Finley?" She asked in a thick Scottish accent.
Alexander sighed.
"No." He said. "But it needs to be done. She must be rid of these memories. For her own protection. If she remembers, if she's capable of that much power, Lucifer and the Demons will use it to destroy her. She could destroy the world as we know it."
"What would you like me to give her?" The woman asked.
Alexander thought for a few moments, carefully considering his answer.
"Give her memories of adventure - a new horizon. Allow her to keep her mind's strength. She can be one of those Human Hunters she's always so curious about. To give her purpose and protect others from the creatures she and her mother made. But... Give her a reason for me to be in her life... Please. That's all I ask, Rowena." He told her.
The woman nodded, thinking of a storyline for the girl to live by.
"I think I have just the thing." She said.
Rowena moved over to a table at one side of the barn, where a bowl sat, filled with some sort of dark, gooey liquid. She dipped her fingertips in it and walked back over to Elizabeth, placing her fingers on the girl's temples just as Castiel had not long ago.
The girl began to scream, jerking at her bonds frantically.
"Please, Alexander! Please, make it stop! It hurts!" She cried.
Her pleas, screams and shaking lasted a few minutes. Castiel could barely watch. Even Alexander had turned around. Eventually, she'd fallen unconscious. Rowena's fingers lingered on the girl's temples a little while longer until the spell was complete.
"It's done." She sighed, shedding a tear for the girl.
Alexander turned back round, seeing the blood dripping from both Elizabeth's nose and Rowena's. The Witch looked entirely drained.
"I'll get the servants to come in and tuck her into bed." Alexander said simply. "You must stay, dearest Rowena. You've exasperated yourself for the safety of my girl. Please, stay as long as you wish."
Rowena was too weak to argue. She simply nodded, heading out of the barn.
Castiel didn't even realise how emotional the scene had made him until he felt a single tear slip down his cheek.
He took a deep breath as he wiped it away.
"Enough." He whispered to himself.

As soon as the Angel released Elizabeth's temples, an energy jolted him back, crashing into Dean behind him.
Dean grunted at the contact, helping Cas find his feet.
"You okay, man? You were in there ages. Did you find anything?" The Winchester asked.
"Dean, give him a minute." Sam sighed, kneeling down beside Elizabeth.
He placed a hand on her forearm, looking for any sign that she was alright.
She looked down at him, giving the smallest hint of a smile before she turned around in her desk chair to wait for answers from the Angel.
"She's the daughter of Adam and Eve." Castiel breathed.
The widened eyes of the Winchesters gave all the response needed.
"I need to make a call." Elizabeth mumbled, getting up from her seat to go to the library.

"Elizabeth. It's been a few years. How have you been?" Alexander greeted on the other end of the phone.
"What did you do to me, Alexander?" She asked.
Alexander paused for a moment.
"I'm afraid I don't know what you're talking about."
"Eden." Elizabeth growled.
Another pause came.
"Oh." Alexander responded quietly, giving a small sigh. "I think we had better meet."
"Name a place. I'll be there." Elizabeth replied.
"I think I had better come to you." Alexander told her.
"Fine. I'll text you the address."

Thirteen hours later, Alexander was outside the Bunker. Elizabeth went out to meet him as he pulled up.
"Hello, dearest." He greeted, his expression unreadable.
"This way." Elizabeth said, ignoring his affections as she led him into the Bunker.
"A little too industrial for my tastes, I must say." He commented, looking around the War Room as he made his way down the stairs.
Sam, Dean and Castiel were waiting for them. The brothers sat at the map table, Cas stood in the archway to the library.
"Hello, gentlemen. It's a pleasure to see you again." Alexander smiled.
"Cut the crap, Alexander. Take a seat." Dean growled, motioning to the seat across the table from him.
Alexander sighed, moving to sit down.
"So... Where would you like me to start?" He asked, lacing his fingers on the table in front of him.
Everyone looked to Elizabeth, who sat there half zoned out.
"The beginning would be great." Sam stepped in.
Alexander smirked.
"Who's beginning? Mine? Or Eden's?"
"Just tell us everything you know, smart ass." Dean glared.
Alexander cleared his throat, adjusting his position in his seat before he began.
"Well, for starters, I have no idea exactly how old Elizabeth is. Not even she knew. Eden told me she'd been unable to keep track long before she met me. Even though she only looked like a child for the majority of the time we'd known each other, I'd place my bets that she's almost as old as the Angels. She aged, of course. Just extraordinarily slowly. Until one day, in the early eighteenth century, she just appeared to stop and hasn't aged a day since." He paused, letting the information sink into his audience's heads before he continued. "I met her in the twelfth century. She was feeding on various Humans. She was going to feed on me as well, but changed her mind. Instead, she turned me. Apparently, she found me intriguing - for the life of me, I'll never understand why; I'm not even sure she knew. She told me about her parentage, about Adam and Eve and the Garden she helped forge. When I asked about her abilities, she said; 'Aunty Amara gave them to me before she went away'."
"Who the Hell's Amara?" Dean frowned.
Alexander's eyebrows raised.
"I can safely say I have no idea. I asked, but she said she wasn't sure. Only that she was 'Aunty Amara'." He said.
The brothers glanced at each other with equal frowns as the Vampire carried on his story.
"From my general knowledge, Eve was capable of making all monsters. But Eden made her fair share of Vampires. There were originally two Vampire Alphas. Though, the one Eden made; Joseph, she killed after he tried to take away her rattlesnake."
"What did she do to him?" Castiel asked.
Alexander gave a reminiscent smile.
"She beheaded him on sight. That snake was her best friend. She spoke with it frequently. His name was Kaa, if memory serves. They were so close, in fact, that I firmly believe that she transferred some of her immortality to him. He lived for centuries. And... When he eventually died, well, I think even Heaven shook with the echo of her grief."
Elizabeth frowned, choosing to speak up for the first time.
"Why did you have my memories wiped by that Witch?" She asked.
Alexander sighed.
"Well, the story goes, God neglected his other creations after he took a liking to you and your power. Lucifer got jealous. That's why he fell. God cast him out for confronting him about the neglect. After he was cast out of Heaven, Lucifer created and rallied the Princes of Hell to find you and destroy you. With all that power radiating from you and the amount of attention you'd been drawing to yourself over the centuries, it was only a matter of time before they caught up with you, no matter how much we moved around. So, I hired the most powerful Witch I knew of and got her to rewrite your memories, thus rendering your powers dormant and you undetectable."
Elizabeth stared off into space again, giving a gentle nod.
"Can this Witch get them back?" Sam asked.
Alexander sighed again.
"I should think not. I fear the only one who would have the power to retrieve those memories would be either the one who gave her those powers in the first place or... God, himself."
"Great..." Dean huffed.
"I believe you were always meant for this life, Elizabeth. Meeting the Winchesters was no accident. As soon as their father crossed your path, it started a clock counting down to you discovering all of this. The fact that you now consort with Angels and have had recent history with Death, himself, only reinforces that belief - That you helped to acquire the weapon that would ultimately kill Eve and help stop an apocalypse that was prophesised around the time of your birth."
"You helped us get Lucifer out of Sammy's head." Dean continued with a nod of his head.
"And spent over a year in Purgatory - the place your mother has been since we killed her." Sam said.
Elizabeth's eyes went wide at the revelation. They had a point.
"Though, I don't believe anyone foresaw you falling in love with Lucifer's true vessel. Wasn't that a spanner in the Devil's works?" Alexander chuckled, his words earning a look from the girl. He quickly realised he'd over-stepped. "I apologise if I've assumed too much, Flower."
Elizabeth gave a vague nod, refusing to look at Sam - or any of her boys for that matter.
"If you'll all excuse me, I must go to my car and collect my supply. I'm parched." Alexander cleared his throat awkwardly, rising from his seat.
"There's some in the fridge in the kitchen." Elizabeth told him. "Down the hall behind me, first door on the right."

"So what do we all think?" Dean asked as soon as he was out of the room.
"I think this is beyond messed up." Sam replied, giving a chuckle devoid of humour. "But it all makes sense."
"If only God were here to fill in the gaps." Castiel sighed, moving towards the table.
"I don't think so." Dean scoffed. "From what we've seen, I think it's pretty safe to say that God was the one who locked Elizabeth in that cave for millennia."
"I have to say," Alexander spoke up, walking back into the room. "In the unlikely event that I ever meet God, myself. I'd like to divulge a few choice words to him." He moved over to Elizabeth, stroking her hair as he had done when she was Eden; as a parent would. "No one hurts my Eden and gets away with it."
She looked up at him, giving him a faint smile as his fingers brushed her cheek.
"Thank you, Alexander." She said. "For being honest with us."
"Yes, well, it was about time." He replied.

By the time Alexander had eventually left, Elizabeth quickly found herself in her room, laying on her bed, with her eyes closed.
She was scanning through all of her visions and everything Alexander had said to her, piecing it all together when she was interrupted by a knock on her door.
She opened her eyes, revealing Sam, who smiled at her.
"Can I come in?" He asked.
Elizabeth nodded, sitting up on the bed as he came and sat facing her.
"This looks serious..." The Vampire cocked a playful brow.
Sam chuckled.
"It is. A bit." He replied. Elizabeth nodded, giving him her undivided attention. "I wanted to see how you were doing - after all that. It's pretty insane for Dean and I to get our heads around. Yours must be spinning."
"A little... I really wish we could find what happened to Amara. I have so many questions for her." Elizabeth sighed.
Sam took her hands in his, lifting them to kiss her knuckles.
"We'll figure it out." He said. "I promise."
"I know." She smiled. There was a pause between them as they thought about everything. Which was when Alexander's words came into her head. "Sam... About what Alexander said... When he was talking about the whole 'meant to be' crap."
"I know what you're going to say. And I think your face back there said everything I needed to know." The Winchester replied. "It actually made me a little relieved... Because I'm in love with you too, Elizabeth."
The Vampire's eyes lit up.
"You are?"
Sam hummed his reply, nodding.
"Have been for years. I was going to tell you before you found out about Bobby's ghost and then Purgatory happened an-"
Elizabeth launched herself at him, wrapping her arms around his neck as she pressed her lips to his.
Sam smiled into the kiss, cupping her head in his hands, her hair getting caught up in his fingers as they fell back onto the bed.
"I love you." She breathed against his mouth, her cool breath leaving his face feeling tingly.
"I love you too." He replied, pulling her into his arms, holding her with everything he had.
