THIRTY EIGHT
Chance knocked softly on Adam's door. Austin let him in; he had his finger up to his lips to let him know to be quiet.
"He just fell asleep." Austin whispered. "He was complaining of a headache but would not lay down without his music on. How did it go with Tim?"
Chance sighed and rolled his eyes, "I've always thought of Tim as someone who noticed everything but he's been completely oblivious to the changes in Adam." Chance shook his head "He honestly has no idea how bad Adam has been. He didn't listen to a single song that was played last night..." Chance let his voice drop and trail off.
"Well did you guys fill him?" Austin inquired "Tell him about Adam's music?"
"We told him that Adam is suffering, that he needs to figure things out with his mom or risk losing him, and I yelled at him to get his shit together." Chance frowned "But I didn't tell him about the song."
Austin was shocked. "What? Why not?"
Chance scratched at his beard "I don't know if I can put it into words. Tim could possibly forever alter his relationship with his mom if he tells her. He could forever alter his relationship with Adam if he doesn't. He needs to figure out his priorities. We need to remain neutral."
"I see where you're going with this." Austin nodded his head. "Telling him about that song would be pushing him towards Adam."
"Exactly." Chance agreed. "We are going to keep an eye on Adam so I don't feel as if not telling him is endangering anyone."
"Chance, you mind if I stay here tonight, too?" Austin asked "In case he gets sick again. I know how you are?"
"Sure, we can share the loveseat." Chance laughed "Won't be the first or last time I've slept sitting up.
Adam managed to make it through the night without getting sick again but he woke up with a killer headache. Chance and Austin woke up to the sounds of Adam rummaging around for Tylenol and water.
"You need some help finding something?" Chance asked as he watched Adam tossing things out of his suitcase.
Adam cringed "Shhhhh..... there is no need to shout." He whispered.
Chance got up and moved closer so he could whisper. "What are you looking for? Can I help?"
"I need something for this headache." Adam said as he covered his own ears.
"Go lay back down. I'll keep looking." Chance chuckled quietly. Soon enough the medication had been found. Adam swallowed it down and was waiting for it to kick in.
"Whenever you think your able, I'd check your text messages." Chance told Adam. Austin gave Chance a questioning look.
Adam rolled over and reached for his phone. His heart rate sky rocketed when he saw he had a message from Tim. He quickly opened the message to be greeted with only three words and Youtube link. Adam read the words over and over again while he untangled his earbuds and plugged them into his phone. He clicked the link:
Chance watched Adam carefully. He had no idea what Tim sent but he was wanting to see Adam's reaction to finally hearing from his lover.
With tears in his eyes Adam pulled his earbuds out and threw his phone across the room as hard as he could. Austin was walking back from the bathroom and got hit by the flying phone, managing to catch it so it didn't break. "What the hell?"
Chance was across the room in a second. He snatched the phone from Austin, looked at the text and clicked the link. He only needed to hear a few words to know the song. He walked over to the bed and knelt down so he was face to face with Adam. He brushed a stray lock of hair from his face. "Adam. Talk to me. Please. Why did you throw your phone?"
Adam sat straight up in bed and started yelling. "He doesn't talk to me for a week. Doesn't text me for a week. Doesn't acknowledge my existence for a week. PUTS ME THROUGH HELL for a week. Doesn't touch me for a week. And this is supposed to make everything okay?" He lay back down and let his tears flow.
Chance was at a loss for words. Sure, Tim had half-assed his text but he wasn't expecting rage from Adam.
Austin walked over and joined Chance by the bed. He looked at the text: "I'm so sorry" and the video and rolled his eyes. "Hey, look at me Adam. Text him back. Tell him how you feel."
Adam sat up again as he took his phone from Austin. He typed out a quick text and then added a Youtube link before hitting send. "Let's go get some breakfast." He said as he stepped between Austin and Chance who were left staring at each other, dumbfounded.
Tim's phone buzzed on his chest, alerting him to a new message. He quickly sat up and scanned the room and upon seeing his mother wasn't there realized the shower was on. He had a few moments to himself. He took a deep breath before opening his phone. He had waited all night for a response from Adam and he was hoping that this was it.
Tim breathed out a huge sigh of relief when he saw Adam's name at the top of his messages. He smiled as he clicked on the message. His smile faded when he read the three short words:
"Is that it?" He was afraid to click the Youtube link but did it anyway.
Tim put the song on repeat and let his tears flow...
