SEVENTEEN
Jenika opened her eyes and saw Adam, Tim, and Ericha hovering over her with a worried looks on their faces. She was about to ask why she was on the floor when she heard loud footsteps coming down the stairs. She tried to sit up but Adam told her not to move and a stranger that looked like a paramedic agreed with him.
Jenika fought with the entire room about going to the hospital but eventually gave in and let the medics pack in her the ambulance and take her in. Adam, Tim, and Ericha followed in Ericha's car and promised the guys that they would send updates.
Being emergency room nurses, Jenika and Ericha knew what to expect and told Adam and Tim to prepare to be there for a few hours. The nurses hooked Jenika up to the monitors, drew blood, took a urine sample and hooked up some IV fluids. Adam would jump every time something would beep or alarm. Jenika and Ericha would giggle at him and then explain what it was and that he needed to calm down or he would be a patient soon too.
Tim was starting to get impatient. "Isn't this place supposed to be quick? What if she was dying?"
"Tim, if she was dying we would have seen the doctor long ago. Nobody likes to wait but waiting in an ER means that you aren't dying. Waiting is a good thing. You should feel bad for the patients and families that get rushed right back. They are the critically ill." Ericha said gently.
Adam sat down beside Tim and put an arm around his shoulder, "Thanks for coming here with us. I appreciate it." Adam left a sweet kiss on his cheek.
Tim smiled shyly, "You're welcome. Jenika means a lot to you and you mean a lot to me. I wanted to be here for both of you." Just as Tim finished his sentence the doctor walked in the room.
He acknowledged the visitors with a nod of his head and then introduced himself to Jenika. "Hello Jenika, I'm Dr Weiss. Before I start I always ask if it's okay for us to talk with your visitors here."
"Absolutely, Dr. Weiss. These are my closest friends. Anything you tell me I will just turn around and tell them so you might as well just tell us all together." Jenika said. She really liked this doctor, he was considerate. Not all doctors thought to ask that question before speaking.
"Jenika, are you sure? I can go wait outside." Tim asked as he stood up.
"Tim, sit down." Jenika said, "I meant what I said. You are included in the 'closest friends' group. Go ahead Dr. Weiss."
"The nurse told me a little of what happened. Were you feeling dizzy or lightheaded at all before standing up?" Dr. Weiss asked.
"No. I had been a little tired but we had driven about two hours, sat through a concert, and then were having a chat afterwards." Jenika didn't divulge that is was a stressful chat. " I remember getting up to grab a tissue and the next thing I know I was on the floor and these three were looking down at me."
"I think she was out for about five minutes" Adam added.
Dr Weiss turned his attention to Adam, "You were there the whole time?" Adam nodded and Dr Weiss continued. "Did she hit her head on anything?"
"Just the edge of the couch. Nothing hard. Her legs gave out underneath her and she landed on her butt on the floor as her head fell back on the couch. She started to slide down the side of the couch so I lowered her down." Adam said as Jenika listened. She had no idea what had actually happened.
"Jenika, are you having pain anywhere?" Dr Weiss asked as he turned back to her.
"None, at all. I feel much better now. These fluids have really helped." Jenika smiled.
Dr. Weiss listened to her heart and stomach, and pushed on the hip she fell on and her abdomen. When he was satisfied with his exam he got to the test results, "All your tests came back normal and your vital signs have been perfect. I think you are the healthiest person in the emergency room. That being said, I think this was all caused from dehydration and fatigue. You're body is going through a lot of changes right now so more fluids and rest than normal okay?"
Jenika looked confused "Uh, changes? What changes are you talking about?"
"Growing another human puts your body through a lot of changes. You're going to need extra rest and extra water." Dr Weiss said without a clue that she didn't already know.
Jenika suddenly felt sick. Ericha grabbed her a vomit bag. Tim and Adam had the same expression, eyes and mouth wide open in shock.
Dr. Weiss looked around the room as the realization came to him. "I'm sorry. I thought you knew already. Clearly this is a shock. And before you ask, yes we are sure. Blood and urine tests came back positive. Jenika, when was your last period?"
Jenika managed not to vomit and had slowed her breathing down some. "I'm not sure. I think like....uhm.... 6 weeks ago." She said and realized that she hadn't even noticed she was late. "I've been a little stressed. I didn't even realize I was late."
"Okay, so let's do this. We'll order an ultrasound, take a look okay? And we'll give you some more fluids while we wait. Sound good?" Dr Weiss asked. Jenika nodded and he left the room.
Tim and Adam had managed to close their mouths but were still sitting in a shocked silence. Ericha sat on the edge of the bed, pulled Jenika into a hug and whispered in her ear "Do you get pregnant every time you have sex?"
Jenika tried to suppress her laughter but failed. She pulled out of the hug and smacked Ericha on the arm. They were both laughing uncontrollably now.
"What the hell is so funny?" Tim asked seriously. His brain was still trying to process what he'd been told and he didn't find any humor in it.
Ericha got herself under control and said "I asked her if she gets pregnant every time she has sex. Five years ago it was TJ and now this little bundle of joy. I was trying to lighten the mood."
Tim just nodded and leaned back in his chair as he watched Adam's face shift through emotions. So far he had seen shock, fear and a combination of the two but it appeared now that Adam was smiling.
Adam walked over to Jenika and sat on the edge of her bed. He pulled the blanket down and gently placed his hand on her lower abdomen. Tears formed in his eyes as Jenika pulled him into a hug.
Ericha grabbed Tim's hand and pulled him out of the room, "They need a few minutes alone." She was just going to head for the waiting room but when she looked at Tim she realized they needed somewhere quieter.
Ericha figured the surgery waiting room would be quiet this time of night and lead Tim that direction. Once there she texted Jenika...'I've got Tim. You guys take your time talking. Let us know when you are back from ultrasound and we'll head back'
"Do you want to talk about it?" Ericha asked as she sat beside Tim and took his hand in hers.
"I'm going to lose him." Tim sniffled "He's going to want to be with her and his child. I don't blame him. I would do the same thing. But can I be selfish for a minute and just think about me? Ericha, I love him with all my heart. I can't live without him." Tim was sobbing into Ericha's shoulder. She just sat and held him close.
Jenika waited until her nurse left the room. "Adam, would you please say something? What are you thinking? I want the truth even if it isn't what I want to hear."
Adam put his hand back on Jenika's belly for a moment and then took her hands in his. He looked into her eyes and said "I'm worried, happy, scared, nervous, terrified, excited. I don't think I've ever felt this many emotions about one thing before."
"I'm feeling all those same things. I have no idea how we're going to do this but we have to make it work. I've raised one child on my own and I know that was selfish of me." Jenika wiped a tear from her eye and continued. "I'm not going to do that again. We have to do this together even if we aren't together."
Adam had opened his to mouth to respond when his phone buzzed in his pocket. "Oh, crap. We promised the guys we would update them." Jenika shook her head no. "I'll just send a vague update. I'm not going to send this information over text."
Adam texted Austin- 'Sorry, Dr just left the room. Tests look great. Probably just dehydration and fatigue. Waiting for one more test and then discharge. Why don't you guys head to bed.' Adam showed the text to Jenika for approval and then sent it.
Just as Adam tried to speak again the transporter showed up to take Jenika to ultrasound. "Adam, let's go" Jenika said as they were wheeling her out of the room.
"You want me to come?" Adam said looking shocked.
Jenika rolled her eyes and said "Don't you want to see your baby?"
Adam jumped out of his chair and followed behind the transporter while quietly repeating to himself "My baby!"
