Seward, 4th of July

We stayed at Seward Municipal Campgrounds for three nights.

Everyone else in Alaska seemed to have the same idea. It was the only place that felt crowded and chaotic, and it had an interesting backstory. Getting a reservation for July 4th week was like trying to buy a new PlayStation at Christmas time.

They opened their portals on a specific time and date (April 1st at 2:00pm EST, if I remember correctly), and it was internet melee. Empty carts, internet crashes, credit cards that wouldn't go through, and a list of questions you wouldn't necessarily be able to answer off the top of your head. My friend was just guessing while I attempted to find the right answers. This put me at a disadvantage, for sure.

The two of us were well prepared ahead of time, cleared our schedules for the afternoon, and had specific campsites to shoot for. Since we were sharing groceries and supplies, we were hoping to be next to each other, or no more than a short walking distance. And like every other RV-er on the Kenai Peninsula, we were striving for the beachfront.

It all seemed pretty straightforward at first. I selected a site and hit "go to cart." But then I got hung up on their questions, like, what kind of RV do you have? And the pull-down menu is VERY specific.

By the time I hit "pay" the first time, the cart was empty, and when I tried again, the best sites were already taken. It took three tries to get something to go through, and at this point, I didn't have the luxury to be picky. I was worried I wouldn't get one at all.

I ended up snagging one in the third row, like, nine minutes after the race began, and our friends, who used the fudging-facts method, were in the second row. We weren't by the beach, not by a long shot, but we still got lucky. They were directly in front of us, so it all worked out.

It wasn't my favorite campsite—busy, crowded, big, basic, and a touch too rowdy—(and I think I hold a grudge over the whole "boating incident"), but there was A LOT to do in Seward. In that regard, it was worth spending an extra night or two, though maybe not on a holiday, if you're looking for a typical Alaskan experience. The fourth of July in Seward didn't qualify. But it was awesome if you enjoy a spectacle (and don't mind crowds and an aggressive internet shopping endeavor). It was purely American and oddly Alaskan. There were locals and people from every state of the country, living in close proximity, in relative harmony.

The strange part was the time of day, and yes, it was technically "day" and not "night" when the firework show began. Because the sky never quite darkens, they went off at 12:00am. It's the opening ceremony rather than the closing one. The whole night was an interesting time-lapse exercise, since we were out later with cameras in hand, more than our evening usual. It was cool and overcast that evening/early morning, so it got as "dark" as it ever really gets in early July. . . .
