Chapter 9
Flynn, Hallie, Peder, and Rosalie stood outside a casino. Flynn wasn't worried, Peder was more responsible than he was. He'd take good care of his sister and now him and Hallie could have some fun at a casino and not have to worry about their siblings.
"Alright now Rose you stay with Peder okay?" said Flynn.
"I'm going to say this one more time. I am turning fifteen in July. I am not a baby. You're just lucky I like spending time with Peder." Rosie replied.
"Sorry. But you're so tiny and short that I forget you're not twelve," Flynn teased.
"Shut up, dork." Rosie said.
"Come here give your big brother a hug," Flynn said stretching his arms out for her.
She gave him a hug and smiled, "Have fun doing illegal stuff."
"Thanks sis." He said.
"Ew look at them they actually hug each other." Hallie joked to her brother,
"Yeah it's weird. We're not gonna do that are we?" He asked.
"Not really my style. How about I playfully punch you in the arm?"
"And I'll do that thing that dad does and place my hand on your shoulder and give you a look,"
"Perfect." Hallie laughed and punched her brother in the arm. "See ya around."
"Be careful and don't do anything stupid." He said putting his hand on her shoulder.
"No promises." She laughed.
Flynn and Hallie made their way into the casino while Peder and Rosie were left to travel the strip.
"What do you wanna do?" Rosie asked,
"Hm how about food?"
"Food is good." Rosie said.
They walked along the sidewalk looking for a place to eat that they could afford.
"We could always go into a Starbucks." Rosalie said. "I know how cranky you get without your coffee."
"What?! I'm not that cranky without coffee. I just prefer to have it." Peder said.
"Well here's your chance," Rosalie pointed to the Starbucks across the street.
"Let's go then. But not because I'm cranky without it."
"Fine maybe you're just naturally cranky." Rosalie laughed.
"Maybe,my sister is so it could've rubbed off,"
Meanwhile.....
"You named yourself Devon Armstrong. That is literally the worst fake name in history." Hallie said quietly to Flynn.
"Hey I found my dad's old one and his was much worse. I can't believe you used your actual first name." Flynn said.
"I did and I didn't. Hallie is short for my full name so I just used that and put Stevens as my last name."
"Wait like Stevens as in Mrs. Stevens from 1st grade?" Flynn asked.
"She was nice! And I feel if I got caught she would bail me out." Hallie laughed.
"I didn't know Hallie wasn't your full name, What is it?"
Hallie waved her finger in the air "No way never going to tell you that. I can't stand it. It's an old Norse name and that's all I'm saying about it."
"Oh now I have to know." Flynn smiled.
"You'll find out the day I'm dead," Hallie said. "Now let's go hustle a few guys at cards." She replied.
"Clueless friend scheme?" Flynn asked.
"You know it's my favorite." Hallie smiled.
Hallie and Flynn had done this routine many times before. During the summer their local pool was always filled with their other classmates around the neighborhood and some would play cards on an old picnic table, Flynn would introduce Hallie and then she would ask to play poker 21 any card game really. The first couple rounds she would pretend she had no idea what she was doing ask a few questions, Then play for real, she had inherited her poker skills from her father and the competitive streak of her mother. Flynn just loved watching all the others faces get confused when she started winning. Soon they couldn't do it at the pool anymore since everyone knew of Hallie by the second month of summer. Now they had he chance to revive their old game.
"Let's go over there they seem like a rich bunch." Hallie pointed out a table of what looked like two business men and an old man at a poker table.
Both of the business wore deep blue suits and blue ties while the old man was in a Hawaiian shirt and shorts. The only thing showing his wealth was a gold Bulgari watch on his wrist.
"Piece of cake." Flynn said
Meanwhile....
"Apparently Rosie is at a Starbucks." Rapunzel said.
"Where did they get all this money from?" Jack asked.
"Peder has his summer job at the public market place, Hallie took some out of her bank account." Hiccup said.
"Flynn has that job at the aquarium," Rapunzel said.
"Yeah but Flynn spends money like no tomorrow. Plus he won't have work all this summer now that he's on this trip." Jack said.
"Maybe Flynn saved up, he hasn't bought many things this year. A new pair of sneakers and the occasional food run." Rapunzel said.
"Well I'll be shocked if he did." Jack said.
"Hallie took a pretty good amount from her bank account and Peder has been saving up for something big since he got his job I guess this was it. They should be okay money wise," Merida said.
"Flynn's debit card," Rapunzel said.
"We should check if he spent anything on his debit card." Jack replied.
Rapunzel called the their credit provider and asked them to email a receipt of the last week.
Rapunzel got the email right away and looked through it.
"Oh my god we just missed them!" She yelled.
"What?! What do you mean?" Merida asked.
"Flynn used his credit card to check into the hotel we were staying at the same night. Within twenty minutes of each other!"
"Well that's great news." Jack said bitterly.
"Don't worry we know where they are now and we'll keep checking up on Flynn's debit card." Hiccup said.
"I can't believe we were that close and I didn't even know it. Some detective I am." Jack said.
"Hey you're a great detective. Our children are just very good at avoiding their parents." Merida said. "Seriously remember the time I ran away from home in 8th grade?"
"Oh yeah the whole neighborhood was looking for you." Jack replied. "Except us because we knew exactly where you were."
"I hid out in our old tree house in the forest behind Jack's house that Jack's dad had built for us in first grade." Merida said. "You guys visited me and finally made me go home. I spent almost a week and my parents still couldn't find me and my dad is one of the best, so don't be so hard on yourself Jack. They learned from the best." Merida said.
"Thanks Merida." Jack replied.
"You're welcome big chief." Merida smiled.
"So you're the reason for my nickname." Jack accused.
"Nope that was all my daughter's doing." Merida said.
