Chapter 17

Hiccup watched as Jack began to to fill up the car with gas. They were in the middle of nowhere. If you looked hard enough you could see the waves of heat passing through the air. It was well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Merida had put her hair in a bun to escape the thickness of her curls covering her neck. Rapunzel was thanking her lucky stars that she had stuck with a pixie cut since sophomore year of college.

Hiccup sighed wondering if the kids were experiencing the same temperature. He was actually disappointed that they hadn't followed them to the Grand Canyon. Peder and him always talked about going together but Peder has made other plans. He knew his son had the right to want to go with his friends, but he couldn't help but be a little disappointed. Hiccup was surprise that Peder even went through with this road trip scheme. He'd never shown signs of rebellion until this, or maybe he just had never been caught.

"Hey," Merida poked her husband from the backseat. "Are you feeling okay?"

"Yeah it's just this heat," he replied, "I miss the kids,"

"I know, me too," Merida sighed,

She understood why they did it though. They wanted an adventure, but they did it in the wrong way. She could tell Hiccup was worrying more and more as the days went on.

"Jack please hurry up," Rapunzel begged trying not to faint from the lack of air conditioning.

"We're almost done, then we'll get back on the road," he replied.

Jack got in the car and turned on the air conditioning as fast as he could. The car began to slowly flood with cool air.

"I understand why we never moved south now," Jack said.

"Are you kidding? With our pale skin we'd be burnt to a crisp," Merida joked.

"Remember when we went to the beach during spring break and you both got so burned we had to take you to the doctor's office," Rapunzel said,

"Yeah we both got second degree burns it was terrible, we looked like lobsters," Merida laughed, "We matched the color of my hair,"

"Shit I hope Flynn brought sunscreen he takes after me," Jack said,

"Hey, you know I think this is the first time we've been on a road trip since the end of senior year," Rapunzel said.

"Yeah I guess it is...we've always done flights. I kind of missed this," Merida said.

"Why don't we do this anymore?" Rapunzel asked,

"Work usually, shit Merida how are you doing with taking so much time off?" Jack asked,

"My job's alright, I have a load of vacation days piling up anyway," Merida replied, "I was going to ask you the same question,"

"Well luckily I have a very understanding captain, I have taken a leave of absence until the kids are home, they weren't happy but they understood,"

Hiccup knew Jack was risking the opportunity to be promoted to Sergeant for taking this leave of absence. He was lucky enough to be off during the summers like Rapunzel with his teaching position at UC Berkeley.

"Hiccup and I can stay, if you two need to get back home," Rapunzel stayed as if reading Hiccup's mind.

"Are you kidding me? These are our kids, of course we're staying," Merida said.

"Yeah there's no way we're leaving," Jack said,

Hiccup felt a buzzing in his pocket, someone was calling him. He took his phone out of his pocket. The little screen said his son's name and a silly picture of the two of them standing in next to a storm trooper at Disneyland.

"Peder's calling," he said.

Merida lurched from the backseat "Pick it up!"

Hiccup was nervous to answer the phone. Why would he be calling? What if they were in trouble? He answered the phone  "Hello?"

"Hey Dad," a wave of relief came over Hiccup as he heard his son's voice on the other line.

"Hey buddy are you okay? Is everything alright?"

"Yeah, I just wanted to talk to you,"

"What's he saying?" Jack asked,

"Put it on speaker," Merida said,

Hiccup put the phone on speaker "It's good to hear you, is Hallie with you?"

"No she's at the gift shop, she's okay though, we're almost there," he said.

Hiccup's heart race quickened at the thought of his children not staying together but he didn't want to panic and scare Peder off. He put his hand on Merida's reassuring as he could see she was about to burst out in anger. She resides and tried her best to keep her cool.

"Okay...how was the canyon?" Hiccup asked,

"How'd you know?"

"Well what else is there to do in Arizona? Plus you've been talking about it for months,"

There was silence on the other end, Hiccup worried if he had messed up. Maybe said the wrong thing.

"Dad...I'm sorry," Peder apologized, "We always talked about going together I just feel crappy about...well about everything. This trip has been amazing but I'm sorry I lied to you and Mom. I just - I've never done anything! Nothing and for once I wanted to be fun and a little reckless you know...I'm just I'm so sorry,"

"Peder," Merida said taking the phone, "Peder it's Mom. We just want you to be safe okay, nothing you ever do will make us stop loving you. You made a bad decision, but that's what kids do sometimes, adults do it to. But we will always be there for you okay?"

"Couldn't have said it better myself," Hiccup said.

"Now Peder, please tell us where you are so we can end this," Merida pleaded,

"I can't do that Mom, I'm sorry," he replied.

"Peder..."

"I won't. I won't ruin this trip for the rest of them, I'm sorry for lying to you but we're still going through with it. I promise to keep you updated everyday. I'll tell you what state we're in but that's all. I'll see you when I get home,"

"Hey Peder this is Mr. Frost," Jack said, "Could you put my son on the line?"

Jack took the phone from Hiccup keeping the other hand on the steering wheel.

"Hello?" Flynn's voice came on the phone.

"Hey Flynn it's Dad, are you and Rosie doing alright?"

"Just sunburned but I'll get over it," he replied.

"Good that's good..." Jack laughed,

"I miss you dad," Flynn said,

"We miss you too buddy, but you're going to have to tell us where you are sooner or later,"

There was silence on the other end.

"Hey remember when we used to bet on who'd win those nascar races?" Jack asked,

"Yeah..." Flynn replied,

"Well why don't we make a little wager,"

"Jack what the hell are you doing?" Merida asked,

"What's the wager?" Flynn questioned

"You see you can pick any monument in New Mexico, if we can get there before you you all have to come home, if you do you can remain on the trip and I'll even provide some of the funds," Jack said. "We just passed Mesa Arizona so we should be around the same area as you guys."

"Jack we did not agree to this!" Hiccup exclaimed,

Jack put the phone on mute, "it's a good plan, we meet them there and they have to come with us no matter what at least we'll know where they are,"

Rapunzel sighed "He is right...and Flynn can never resist a challenge,"

They could hear the kids talking it over deciding whether or not to take the deal. If they did then their parents wouldn't be following them around anymore. Plus the guilt could be taken off their shoulders a bit. If only Hallie was there to talk some sense into them.

"Alright first one to the Four Corners State Monument wins. Peder says you can't use your sirens to get ahead,"

"Deal see you soon," Jack said,

Authors note: sorry this took so long had some writers block!
