Chapter 8: Campfire Cuddles
Why did I do that? Why on earth did I just do that? I kissed Matt, I pressed my lips against his. Yes, I like him, but now I've changed our dynamic. There's no way we can go back to being friends after last night. I wish I hadn't agreed to go to the bonfire with him and his family.
As the stars are out dancing above our heads in the twilight sky, and his siblings are laughing over the crackling fire, all I can think about is how I kissed Matt. My thoughts are interrupted when Asher speaks, "Hey, Matt remember that time when you went bull riding and lasted like what...not even one second?"
"That happened one time! And I was fifteen." Matt replied, "At least I tried it, Liz over here was too chicken."
Elizabeth chuckles, "Call me chicken all you want, at least I didn't fall on top of someone." She almost falls out of her chair laughing.
I start to shiver from the cold and Matt notices, "Are you cold? I'll go grab a blanket from my truck." I feel bad, I've kind of been ignoring him the whole night and sat by his sister.
"So, Tessa. Have you ever been to a rodeo before?" Elizabeth asks."
"Nope, but I used to take horseback riding lessons when I was little."
"Have Matt taken you out to the trail yet?" Asher says with a smirk.
"Yeah, he took me and Mallory the other day."
"Matt likes to take all his friends riding."
I blush, "I don't know what you mean."
"I think you do," Elizabeth winks.
"I will say, this is the happiest I've ever seen him in a long time." Asher said, "So, you know....thanks for that."
"You don't have to thank me. I hardly did anything."
"Trust me, you did more than you know."
"So, when do you leave?" Liz asks.
I haven't thought about leaving until now. "Um...three days, I think."
"But do you even want to leave?"
"I have to." Liz and Asher give each other a look, before they can say anything Matt comes back with a quilted blanket and interrupts the conversation.
"Hey, what did I miss?" He drapes the quilt over my shoulders and sits next to me.
"We were just wondering where Jackson is," Liz answers.
"I think he has a date tonight with Ashely," Matt says and Asher scoffs, "Is someone jealous?"
"No."
"You sure?" Elizabeth teases.
"Whatever, I'm grabbing another drink," Asher says and leaves.
Elizabeth looks down at her empty cup, "I guess I could use a refill." I wish they didn't leave me alone with Matt.
"So, you've been avoiding me, again," Matt says.
"Have I?"
"Yep, and I think I know why."
"Matt-"
"You regretted it, kissing me last night."
"That's not true," I say and look at him.
"Oh, then what it is?"
"You don't think we're moving a little too fast? We don't even know each other, and I practically threw myself at you."
"Well, let's change that. Go on a date with me."
I sigh, "You know I can't."
"Tessa, as you said, you threw yourself at me. I know you like me, so go out with me already. One date, that's all I'm asking."
I think about it and smile, "One date."
"Alright," He leans in to kiss me, but I stop him. "What was that for?"
"No more kissing until after our date."
He raises a brow, "Really?"
"Yep, and the date must be very romantic. I want a candlelight dinner and everything." I tease and kiss him on the lips.
"I thought you said no more kissing?"
"That was one for free." I look over and see Elizabeth standing next to Asher. I feel like a deer caught in the headlights.
"Okay, what did we miss?" Elizabeth asks.
Matt throws his arm around my shoulder. "We, are going on a date."
"Yes! Finally! Pay up big brother," She holds her hand out and Asher gives her a five-dollar bill.
"What? A bet is a bet."
