Chapter 9
The next morning in River Haven, the city paper's headline read, " McMahon Heir Kidnapped By Montgomery Asylum Escapee."
"A man in a mask?" Paul joked as Renee tried to explain what she had seen the night before.
"Yes. And there were two girls that got kidnapped, not just Alexa McMahon." Renee said.
Paul continued laughing to himself for a moment.
"Listen, Young.. People in this town don't really give a crap about anything unless it involves a McMahon or a Kahn. And because of recent events, obviously the Reigns'. SO when we publish a paper, we publish to sell. No one's wants to read about the other girl that got kidnapped, they want to read about the prom queen." Paul tried to explain.
"Journalism is supposed to be about getting the truth out there, Paul.. It's about selling papers." Renee told him.
"It is for me." Paul told her.
Renee shook her head in disapproval and began to leave.
"What about you, Renee? Do you wanna put your truth out there?" Paul asked.
"What do you mean?" Renee asked as she turned around.
"Why'd you leave town? Why'd you come back? Did something happen in D.C. while you were gone or did something happen here in River Haven before you left? What are you hiding?" Paul asked.
Renee froze for a moment as she began to get uncomfortable.
"Not everyone wants the truth. They just was a juicy story." Paul said with a smirk on his face.
Renee left his office in a rage, passing by Phil on her way out.
That morning at River Haven high school, Sasha was getting books out of her locker when Alexa walked down the hall. Everyone greeted her with sympathy and comforting smiles. Sasha rolled her eyes and shut her locker. But Alexa walked straight through the crowded hall and approached Sasha.
"How's your arm?" Alexa asked.
Sasha gave her a confusing look.
"What are you doing?" Sasha asked.
Alexa let out a small laugh.
"I'm just checking in on you. Last night was a lot.." Alexa said.
"Yeah it was but I don't need you to check on me. Why don't you go find someone else to feel sorry for." Sasha said rudely.
Alexa looked at her uncomfortable, not realizing she has over steping.
"Right, um okay.. Sorry, forget I said anything." Alexa said awkwardly as she began to walk away.
Now Sasha was realizing how rude she was being.
"Wait." Sasha said.
Alexa stopped and turned back to face her.
"You wanna get out of here?" Sasha asked.
Alexa looked at Sasha with intrigue as she let out a slight smile.
At city hall, a crowd began to gather around the press as Brandi Rhodes began to give a speech. She stood on the steps of River Haven city hall with Cody by her side.
"Good morning, citizens of River Haven. I wanted to thank you all for coming out today. Last night was very disturbing for a lot of us. I know most mayoral candidates would probably come out here and tell you all that everything is going to be okay and how they will fix things if they are elected. But not me.. I'm not going to do that today." Brandi began.
Everyone looked around in confusion. Roman had joined the back of the crowd, hoping not to draw attention to himself. Phil and Renee were at the front with the press, taking notes.
"Last night, I heard more honestly from one man in the span of five minutes tan I have ever heard in this city before. That is why I have called you all here.. Because I want to talk about Sefina Reigns, and I want to speak honestly." Brandi said.
Roman put his hands in his tan trench coat and listened carefully.
"I too believe that Sefina Reigns was murdered, and I think you all believe the same. I may not know the exact reason why but I can tell you that as a woman.. I feel attacked. Maybe what happened was dirty politics gone wrong.. or maybe it was men in this town being afraid to let a woman tell them what to do for once." Brandi said.
The crowd was listening to every word Brandi said as those at home watched from their television.
"This city is full of corrupt politicians that don't know the first meaning of the word respect. Men have been running this city since day one and where has it gotten us? Our crime rates are one of the highest in the country. We have people in the Ridge living in below average conditions. Our school system prejudices our students based on the amount of money their parents have and our criminal justice system is the most corrupt of all. This is city is going to hell and it's because the men in this town care more about their goddamn egos than they due about our citizens." Brandi told everyone.
Roman nodded in approval of Brandi's words.
"So I'm telling you all now that if you elect me as your mayor I will take the ball out of the men's court and give the women in this city the power they need to help this community thrive. Not only that but I'm declaring right now that my first act as the first woman mayor of Riven Haven will be to find those responsible for the assassination of Sefina Reigns. I will not rest until justice is served." Brandi said as she glanced at Roman through the crowd."
At the McMahon's residence, Hunter and the others were watching Brandi's speech.
"Son of a bitch!" Hunter yelled in frustration.
"She just took all your female voters. Not to mention all of Sefina Reigns' followers." Seth told him.
Stephanie walked over to Hunter and took a deep breath.
"The only thing that is going to fix this is an endorsement.. From Roman Reigns." Stephanie told him.
Seth got an unsettling feeling in his stomach as Stephanie and Hunter looked to him.
After Brandi's speech, Roman stopped Renee on the sidewalk.
"The prodigal daughter returns." Roman said.
Renee let out a small laugh.
"Hello, Roman. It's nice to see you, again." Renee told him.
"Are you back for good? After graduation you kind of just diappeared.." Roman asked.
"Yeah, I'm back." Renee told him
Roman let out a slight smile.
"That's good.. Because I never got the chance to as you out on a date." Roman told her.
Renee let out a big smile as she began to blush.
"Not that I ever had the guts to do it back in high school.." Roman said.
"You're telling me that THE Roman Reigns was afraid to ask me out?" Renee asked.
"Oh definitely. Nothing's scarier then a pretty girl." Roman joked.
Renee let out a laugh as she tucked her hair behind her ear.
"Yes." Renee said.
"Yes?" Roman asked.
"I would love to go out with you." Renee told him.
Roman let out a rather dorky smile.
"How about tonight? Seven o'clock at Morrison's?" Roman asked.
"I'll see you there." Renee told him.
Roman smiled to himself as Renee walked away.
That afternoon, Sasha had lead Alexa to a cliff overlooking the city.
"Wow." Alexa said as they sat down on a rock.
"You've never been up here before, have you?" Sasha asked.
"No. I've never even gotten away from my security long enough to see anything." Alexa told her.
Sasha glanced over at Alexa.
"It must be nice having people to protect you like that." Sasha said.
"No.. It's suffocating." Alexa told her.
Sasha shook her head.
"Poor rich girl.. You've got it so hard." Sasha said.
"Just because I'm rich doesn't mean that I don't have problems." Alexa told her.
Sasha didn't say anything for a moment.
"You have two parents, a giant ass house that doesn't sound like going to fall apart when the wind blows too hard, you have 24/7 protection and when graduation comes, you get to do anything you want. What problems could you possibly have?" Sasha asked.
Alexa looked down shamefully.
"It's a lot of pressure having to be Hunter and Stephanie's perfect daughter all the time." Alexa began to say.
Sasha let out a small laugh at Alexa's attempt to be relatable.
"You remember that semester of school I spent studying abroad?" Alexa asked.
"Yeah.. Not all of us having the luxury to take off to Italy when we want." Sasha said in annoyance.
"I wasn't in Italy. I was here in River Haven." Alexa revealed.
Sasha looked over at her curiously.
"I have an eating disorder.. There was a whole when I just didn't eat anything and it almost killed me." Alexa told her.
Sasha began to get very uncomfortably as a rush of guilt came over her.
"I spent that whole semester doing outpatient treatment at Montgomery Asylum." Alexa said.
"Oh my god.. I am so sorry. I had no idea-." Sasha began to apologize.
"It's okay.. I'm just a rich girl, my problems don't matter right?" Alexa said.
Downtown, Becky approached a park bench where Dean was sitting.
"What's going on, man?" Becky asked.
"There's some talk on the streets.." Dean began to say.
"And?" She asked.
"Jericho think you might know something about some stolen cash." Dean told her.
Becky looked down and thought to herself for a moment.
"Becks.." Dean began to say.
"I might know something about it." Becky told him.
Dean took a deep breath and looked at her with concern.
"Who asked you take it?" Dean asked.
"Jay and his buddies." Becky said.
"Okay.." Dean tried to think.
"And River Haven PD." Becky added.
Dean looked over at her.
"Since when do you work with cops?" Dean asked
"Relax. They paid me for the job and I told them I didn't find anything." Becky said.
"And how much profit did you get out of Jay?" Dean asked.
"Fifty." Becky said.
Dean let out an amusing laugh.
"Damn, girl." Dean said as he gave her a high five.
"Hey, I learned from the best." Becky told him.
"That you did." Dean said.
The two friends shared a laugh for a moment.
"I'll throw Jericho some bait to get him off your trail." Dean told her.
"Thanks, man." Becky said as she patted him on the shoulder before walking away.
Dean smiled proudly to himself before his phone began to ring.
"Paige calling." The caller ID read.
Dean ignored the call and took a deep breath.
