Chapter 1
It was a cautiously quiet morning in River Falls as the wind blew through the city streets. The Inner Circle were celebrating their recent increase in cash flow at their well known meeting place inside Jericho's Bar while Becky Lynch made her way down the fire escape with an empty backpack on her back and a duffel bag full of stolen cash. She made her way onto the street in her black leather jacket with a smirk on her face knowing that she had escaped without being noticed. About a mile down the street she walked into an abandoned alley where members of the Bullet Club were waiting for her. Jay White was surrounded by Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa, and Kenta.
"Hey there, sweet heart. You get the the goods?" Jay White asked.
Becky walked up to Jay and sat the duffel bag down next to him.
"One hundred thousand of the Inner Circle's profits as promised." Becky told him.
Jay watched Becky for a moment as she took notice of the other club member's change of demeanor.
"You promised me forty percent, Jay." Becky reminded him.
Jay shared a laugh with the others.
"Or I could just kill you now and keep all this cash for myself." Jay told her.
Becky now let out a small laugh herself.
"Or.." Becky began to say turning around and kicking Kenta across the face.
Jay motioned for Tama and Tonga to stand down as Kenta and Becky exchanged fists. Kenta elbowed Becky aggressively in the face, busting her nose open. Becky returned with a brutal head butt, making Kenta momentarily lose his balence. She quickly grabbed him by the neck and held her gun to his head.
"Let's go ahead and make that fifty percent." Becky told Jay as she held Kenta at Gun point.
Jay stared at Becky furiously for a moment. She waited as blood ran out of her nose. Finally, realizing he had no other option, Jay nodded to Tama. Becky kicked over her empty backpack and Tama filled it with half of the cash. He tossed the bag back over to her and she put it in the back. Becky slowly began to back away and she used Kenta as a shield.
"It was nice doing business with you, Jay." Becky said.
"Isn't it always." Jay said in irritation as Becky let go of Kenta and disappeared.
Becky continued her way through the city streets before coming across a familiar face. Detective Shawn Michael's stood against his parked police car with a coffee in hand.
"Are you stalking me now, detective?" Becky asked as she approached him.
"It's been a week, Lynch." Shawn told her.
"And I told you I would let you know if I found something." Becky assured him.
"You're telling me you've been watching the Inner Circle for a week and you haven't found one thing?" Shawn asked.
Becky adjusted her backpack.
"Other than Jericho drinking a little bit of the bubbly, no not really." Becky lied through her teeth.
"River Falls PD paid you in advance to find that stolen money. I convinced Captain Stratus to hire you for this job because I know you're better than anyone at sticking your nose where it doesn't belong." Shawn told her.
"Well if it were me, I wouldn't pay someone to do a job before they've done it. That's just a common business rule, is it not?" Becky asked.
Shawn stared at Becky in disbelief for a moment as she let out a mischievous smirk.
"Unbelievable." Shawn said as he shook his head and got into his car.
Becky watched with satisfaction as he drove off. Suddenly, the wind blew a copy of the River Falls Post up to the sidewalk. Becky reached down and grabbed the paper as the smile faded from her face.
"One Year Anniversary of Death of Joseph and Sefina and Reigns." The headline read.
Becky continued reading the paper.
"Today marks the one year anniversary of the tragic death of former mayor of River Falls, Sefina Reigns and her husband Joseph. Sefina made history as the first mayoral candidate to be elected without affiliations with either the McMahon or Kahn families. Her memory and the memory of her husband are to be honored tonight at an event being held by their son, Roman Reigns. The event is to be held at Reigns Enterprise this evening at eight o'clock." The first paragraph read.
Becky dropped the paper as a rush of guilt came over her.
At the Reigns residence, William Regal and Roman Reigns were just finishing up their morning training session.
"I still don't think you're ready." William tried to tell him.
Roman took a drink of his water and glanced over at William for a moment.
"It's been a year, William. I'm ready." Roman assured him.
"You're going to get yourself killed." William said in frustration.
Roman thought over what he was hearing.
"Maybe. But at least I'll die fighting for something." Roman told him before walking away.
At the River Haven Post, Renee Young was just coming off the elevator on the third floor. She walked across the room, making her way into Paul Heyman's office as everyone stared her down.
"Well, well, well, look who it is." Paul Heyman said.
Phil Brooks turned around in his seat and saw Renee standing there.
"Renee Young back in River Haven.. Hell must have really frozen over." Paul joked.
Renee Young gave Phil and awkward glance.
"Give us a minute, Phil." Paul told him.
Phil was a little skeptical but he got up and left the room. On the way out, Renee couldn't help must feel some animosity from Phil.
"So.. Why did you leave? Why are you back? Tell me everything." Paul said.
Renee took a deep breath.
"I'm not here to talk about myself. I want to report on the death of Sefina an Joseph Reigns." Renee told him bluntly.
Paul stared at her in disbelief.
"You what?" He laughed.
"I don't think their death was an accident. They were murdered and I want to find out who is responsible." Renee told him.
Paul looked Renee up and down for a moment in surprise by her courage.
"You have a death wish or something, Young?" Paul asked.
"I just want answers." Renee told him.
"I'll take that as a yes." Paul said with amusement.
"Do I have the job or not? Because if not I can head back to Washington-." Renee began to say.
"The jobs yours if you want it. Just don't get killed, okay? If another reported dies on the job the city is going to start suing me. Paul tried to joke.
Renee looked at him for a moment and let out an awkward laugh.
"I wasn't joking, sweetheart. I've already got two divorces to pay for. I ain't got money for a lawsuit over you getting killed on the job." Paul told her seriously.
Renee just looked at him awkwardly for a moment.
"Good luck on the job though. Keep me up to date." Paul told her before leaving the room.
