Chapter Four
I woke up to the sound of someone's voice, calling my name. I opened my eyes to see a pig's face looming over me. I jumped away from it. I heard chuckling.
"Jesus Christ," I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes. "Your ugly mug almost gave me a heart attack."
"Hey!" Wildcat glared. "That's Mr. Ugly Mug to you."
With a yawn, I asked, "So what are you doing here?"
He rolled his eyes. "Babysitting, remember? Come on, get ready."
He picked up my mask from the nightstand and examined it, running his fingers over it. I eyed him in confusion, but gave up and put on my jacket. I couldn't put on my shirt, since it was cut up, so I stuck with Wildcat's.
He handed me my mask. "Put this on." He ordered. I raised an eyebrow. "We'll take the masks off once we get into traffic." That only raised more questions, but I just shrugged and put it on. After that, he ushered me outside.
We passed a couple of the members on our way, Wildcat explaining what their roles were. Before we left, we ran into Vanoss. He spoke with Wildcat a bit, and then handed us money, adding the comment, "If this isn't enough, you know how to get more."
Wildcat nodded and ushered me out in front of him. He took me to a sleek, black car and opened the door for me, before getting in on his own side. I buckled up and he started driving away from the hideout.
We went into traffic leading into town and he finally took his mask off, and I followed suit. I looked at him without the mask, and, as much as I hate to admit it, he wasn't half as bad looking as I expected.
I saw him smirk. "See something you like?"
"Yeah." I said. He side glanced Mexico looking slightly surprised. "That Taco Bell we just drove by."
He shook his head and gave a little smile. "Maybe we could stop by there." He held up a finger in my face. "Only, if you don't cause havoc in the store."
Seeing is bandaged hand reminded me of something. "How is it?"
"How's what?"
"Your hand." I held out my hand. "Let me see it."
He raised an eyebrow at me, but gave me his hand anyway. "To answer your question, it's fine. It hurts when pressure is applied to it, but it hasn't kept me from doing anything."
I was examining it, but I couldn't do much without undoing the bandages. "Did you properly clean it?" He shook his head. "Oh, it might be infected then. We'll need to pick up some alcohol and other supplies from the store, I need to sew up my side as well."
He nodded. "How is your side?"
"I yanked the bullet out with my bare hands and didn't have anything to properly clean it with, so you can imagine the risk of infection. But, fine for the most part."
He nodded. "So," he chuckled. "You gonna let go of my hand?"
I looked back at my hands and indeed, I was still holding his hand with both of mine. I let go and set my hands in my lap. I looked out the window, letting the silence consume the rest of the ride, which wasn't more than a couple minutes after that.
We landed at a random store, Wildcat telling me everything we need will be here. He grabbed some food and first aid supplies, well, I told him what to grab. He went to the counter and paid, after that, we went across the street to a clothing store.
"Okay, get what you need and I'll pay." He said. I shook my head and shooed away his offer with my hand.
"That's not the fun way." I sent him a wink. "Now, go on, or else people will think you're my boyfriend."
I went over to a couple of racks of clothing and hung there for a bit, picking up shirts and pants, but putting them back after being "shocked" by the price.
Soon, a young man sauntered over to me. He started chatting me up, and asked me what's wrong.
"Oh," I said in a fake worried voice. "I want to buy these nice clothes, but I'm afraid they're too expensive for me." I brushed my hand across the fabric and gave a pout.
"Hey," he put his hand on my shoulder. "I have an idea. How about I buy this pretty girl some clothes, so this pretty girl doesn't get upset."
My eyes widened in false surprise. "That's too sweet, I couldn't. It's not fair."
"Nonsense," he smiled. "I would be honoured."
"Well, thank you." I smiled back. "I'm sorry, I never got your name."
"Zane. And yours?"
"Vanessa." I always gave fake names in these situations. After all, can't have these people track me down. "But friends call me Nes."
"Well, Nes, shall we go get your clothes checked out?"
I nodded and he led me to the checkout, his hand on the small of my back. After the cashier scanned everything, he took out a credit card and gave it to the lady.
He handed me the bag and we headed out the door. He asked if I needed a ride home, but I told him I live nearby. I give him my "number" and told him to call me later, implying I could make up for the money later.
I sent him away with a wink and a kiss on the cheek and waited outside for Wildcat. A few minutes after Zane's car drove off, he came out.
"So, that's the fun way?" He asked as we made our way down to the car.
I shrugged. "Not quite. Usually, as I'm flirting, I like to take their wallets, too, but this guy had a card, and he would cancel that as soon as he realized it was gone." I set my bags in the back seat and buckled myself in.
He nodded. After that, the car ride was mainly silence. I was looking in the side mirror, and I saw a car that had been following us since the store.
"Hey," I spoke up. "I think you have a fan." I jerked my head towards the car.
He glanced into the rear view mirror. "Yeah, I've been testing it." He sighed. He put on his mask and I put on mine. "Just in case." He glanced in the mirror again. "Alright, Pip, hold on tight, we're about to step on it."
