Chapter Five
I took a deep breath in and grabbed the handle above the door.
Wildcat slammed the pedal, and in no time at all, we were speeding down an empty road.
I muttered a chain of curses, never in my life have I gone this fast. Meanwhile, Wildcat looked like this was an everyday occurrence with how calm he looked. His eyebrows furrowed in concentration as he looked in the rear view mirror again.
"Shit, shit, shit." He slapped the steering wheel. The car that was previously behind us sped up and was side by side with us. "Okay. Fuck."
Suddenly, he slammed on the brakes. I squealed a bit, but his hand stopped me from lurching forward.
He swerved and turned around on the road. He started driving into more and more traffic, hinting me that we were going back into town.
"Well, he's no longer right behind us." He stated. "But I'm going into some alleyways to try and lose him."
I nodded. I noticed his hand still hovering over me. I gave a small chuckle. He looked over at me in confusion. "What's so funny?"
"Are you going to keep your hand over my chest or...?"
He quickly put his hand on the steering wheel. "I don't know what you're talking about." He looked around. "I think we lost him. Finally." He let out a sigh of relief. "This is definitely not how I thought I'd spend my morning." He went back into traffic and drove in the direction of the hideout.
...
"Okay," I explained in a calm voice. "This is going to hurt like a motherfucker, but you'll feel better because of it."
I put the alcohol soaked rag on Wildcat's hand, right where I stabbed him. He sharply inhaled, but didn't complain. We were sitting on my floor, medical supplies scattered about. I had already taken care of my wound in the bathroom while he was explaining this morning to the rest of the guys.
"Hey, Pip?" I looked up from his the rag into his eyes. "How do you know this stuff?"
I shook my head. "Well, my mother did this shit as her job. And really, it's basic stuff. Examine, clean, patch up." I started wrapping bandages around his hand. "I'll check it out tomorrow, and I'll most likely stitch it up or something." I finished wrapping and patted his hand. "All done."
I started picking things up and a moment later, so didn't he. "Hey, uh, I really appreciate this whole, doctoring thing. I know I was mean to you at first, but I mean, thanks."
I shrugged. "I'd get pissed if someone stabbed me in the hand, so whatever." I tossed him a roll of bandages. "Don't undo the bandages if the bleeding gets heavy, you'll interfere with clotting. Just put more on, you won't lose that much blood. And you know where to find me if you get concerned."
He nodded. "Thanks, again."
I waved off his offer. "Yeah, yeah. Don't forget your mask."
He grabbed his mask and left. I had already put everything up, so I was just alone and bored.
Thankfully, there was a knock on my door a few minutes later. I turned around to see Vanoss peek his head in. "Hey," his voice was muffled by his mask. I've seen a few without the masks, but never him. "We have a meeting we have to do with some people downtown. And, we're leaving you here. Wildcat is going to be here, but in case we need help, get ready to leave."
I nodded. "Roger that." He closed the door behind him. I closed my eyes and started thinking about the last two days.
Has it only been two days?
I don't even know what I'm supposed to do here.
I sighed. I guess I could go ask. I opened the door, hoping to catch Vanoss before he left, all though, that wasn't likely. Instead, I was greeted with a face I have seen all day.
"Hey," I said. "Have they left already?" I attempted to look over his shoulder, but he was easily a foot taller than me, even on my toes.
"Yeah. Did you need something?"
I sighed and gave up. "I want to know what the fuck I'm supposed to do."
He shrugged. "I don't think Vanoss even knows." He chuckled.
I raised an eyebrow. "What's funny?"
"You're so short." I didn't find it that funny, but Wildcat seemed to get a kick out of it.
I crossed my arms. "Why don't you make yourself useful and show me to the kitchen?"
