Chapter Eight

There was a long silence on the phone, I thought she hung up. Suddenly, laughter. "That's a good one, you almost had me going for a second."

My throat was dry. Tyler raised an eyebrow. "No, uh, it really is me."

Another silence. "I don't know who this is, but you are not my daughter. My daughter is probably dead and you think this is a funny joke?"

I sighed. "I'm sorry, ma'am." Before she could respond, I hung up the phone and tossed it on Tyler's lap.

"Hey?" He said in a pitiful voice.

I crossed my arms. "I knew this would happen. But I took the chance anyway. I leaped over that cliff and now my neck is broken. I knew she wouldn't jump on the idea of her missing daughter on the phone. I knew it, and it was a stupid idea."

Tyler pulled me over to him, our hips now touching. "At least you tried."

I nodded, noticing my eyes were wet. I blinked away as much as I could, and wipe the rest. My head was resting on his chest, and he had his armed draped around me. It was a comfortable position.

How could I find more comfort in a man that I've known for two days, who I fought with a lot, than my own mother?

We sat like that for a while, our breaths syncing up. The gentle rise and fall of his chest paired with his heartbeat was enough to make me sleepy.

I closed my eyes. I enjoyed the presence of another person. Even if it was a pig who I became rivals with in an alleyway.

Before I could fall asleep, I heard a voice approaching us.

"We're back!" I assumed Vanoss shouted.

I closed my eyes, pretending to sleep. There were multiple shushes in the room.

"Are they asleep?" I heard Delirious ask.

"Not for long if you keep your loud mouth talking." This voice was Irish. "What do we do?"

"We should probably let them sleep." Vanoss answered. "We'll tell them everything when they wake up."

The noise from the T.V. shut off, and footsteps left the room. After a moment, I opened my eyes and looked up at Tyler to see him sleeping. I closed my eyes and allowed myself to sleep.

...

I was awoken by voices around me. I felt something under my head vibrate every once in a while. It took me a moment, but I remembered falling asleep on Tyler's chest.

His arm was still around me, even though he was awake. I opened my eyes to see faces and masks scattered around the living room.

Only two of them had masks on, Delirious and Vanoss.

"Look who's awake." Someone said. Eyes flickered towards me.

I rose into a sitting position, slowly, since my muscles were stiff from staying in the same position for that long. Tyler's arm retracted. I yawned. "How long was I asleep for?"

Tyler shrugged. "I'd say around two hours. I just woke up, like, ten minutes ago."

"You guys were super cute cuddling." I heard Delirious say. He was on the couch beside me. I swiftly kicked his leg the best I could in this position. "Ow."

"What's up with you two and masks?" I pointed at Delirious and Vanoss.

"Well, I don't know if I trust you with my face yet," Vanoss stated blankly. "And none of us have seen Delirious's face."

"My beauty is too great! It would cause the world to explode!" He made an explosive motion with his hands.

"Does he like sleep with it on or something?" I raised an eyebrow.

Tyler shrugged. "Probably."

"So," I crossed my arms and sat back in the couch. "How was the heist?"

They explained the whole scene to me. I glanced over to Tyler, who was being really quiet about the whole thing. I felt guilty for making him stay with me, even if it wasn't intentional.

I cleared my throat. "I want to go on one."

They looked amongst each other. Some nodding. Others shaking their heads in disagreement. Most just looked at their leader, waiting for his input.

"Why?" Was all Vanoss said.

"Well, I could be useful. And, Tyler had to miss this 'epic heist' just because you put him on babysitting duty. If I went with you guys, he would go, too. And that's only fair."

He seemed to take this into consideration. At last, he said something. "We'll see."

It wasn't a guarantee, but it was the best I was going to get.

After a couple more minutes, he dismissed us and went into his own room. I stared at his door for a few moments before someone came up behind me.

"You probably shouldn't stare at that room." Tyler whispered in my ear. He had to bend down to get to that height. "It might make them suspicious."

I nodded. Tyler walked away, talking to Lui. I walked towards my own room.

Delirious was walking by my side, blabbing about something, but I didn't listen. My mind was on that list. I needed to find out more.
