Tomboy ~ Story 4 ~ Part 2
The second round was starting. The players who had passed the first round would have their names put into a cap. They would then be drawn out at random to pick the teams.
Obviously, since it was basketball, there were teams of 5 (since it was just for judging we weren't going to have subs). I heard my name being called out and I ran to the corner of the gym I was sent to. The boys who were in my team groaned when I approached them.
"Ugh! Why'd we get the girl!" One of them complained. I rolled my eyes at the irrelevant comment.
"I'm (l/n) (f/n) nice to meet you! You can call me (nickname)" they greeted themselves in a lot less enthusiasm as me. My teammates were Touta, Kotake, Rei and Shin. They weren't pleased to see me but I didn't care.
Soon enough it was our turn. We got into positions. We didn't follow the accurate positions but if we did, my position would've been small forward. Most of the match I was ignored, my own teammates blocked me from getting the ball and I was starting to get really really annoyed.
I finally took matters into my own hands. A member of the opposing team was about to shoot when I jumped in and blocked it. Light on my feet, I weaved in and out of the players making my way near the net. Our team needed the points so I took a huge risk.
Carefully but quickly I dribbled to behind the three-point line and prepared to shoot. My gaze was fixed firmly on the net. As my arms drew backwards and my legs bent I could hear the running footsteps of someone coming to intercept but they were too late. Whoosh.
The whole crowd was in suspense as the ball flew towards the net. The ball ringed around the basket dramatically like it did in the movies. "Oh come on already!" I yelled. And with that the ball fell in. My team cheered and I could feel a sense of trust being shown towards me. Honestly, it felt good.
The team started passing the ball towards me more and we were on a role making a comeback of amazing measures. Time was ticking away and we were on the last minute of the game. I was passed the ball but much to my dismay, Akito was there to block me. He tried to take the ball off me but I wouldn't allow that.
Unfortunately as he was on my trail it was impossible to make a shot from a distance so I had to get up close. I sprang up and dunked the ball in. Everyone cheered as the whistle blew signalling the end of the game. I ran to my team, everyone was high-fiving me and complimenting me. This was completely different to how they first reacted but I was too tired to complain.
I had to rub my eyes and look at the scoreboard a couple of times just to make sure I was seeing the right thing. We'd tied. We'd actually tied against the legendary team of Kasai Academy. I yelled in excitement and victory. Marisa ran up and hugged me.
Of course the Kasai team had tried to argue saying things like "it's only because we were tired!" Or "we were going easy because there was a girl on their team" but clearly our mini team didn't so much as give a shiz.
"There's no need for that guys, these guys tied with us from their own hard work and determination at least thank them for the game. This isn't like us!" Unbelievably this was said by none other than Nakamura Akito. I was more than surprised as he came up to our team and shook our hands.
"Impressive," he remarked while shaking my hand. "You weren't too bad yourself." I replied. A smirk plastered on his face and I suddenly felt uneasy; just what exactly was he planning to do? He let go of my hand and walked away laughing softly.
After all the matches had been played, everyone was allowed to have a break and take refreshments from the stand. I didn't care for those things and just carried on practicing until Marisa came up to me.
"You did great (f/n)!" She cheered. I smiled sweetly at that. "Thanks Marisa!" I replied. We talked about random things to pass the time. I was getting impatient, waiting for the results to be announced.
"Alright everybody! This is the moment you've all been waiting for!" My fists clenched and my heart rate increased rapidly. 'Come on come on please let me in please!' I whispered to myself.
A member of the team started announcing names. I waited to hear any sign of my name being called. I'd just about given up when "-And finally (l/n) (f/n). Well done to everyone here, especially the ones who got into the team!"
I was practically crying and Marisa hugged me cheering "You did it! You really did it!" After I'd went home and took a bath I went straight to bed trying to think of all of this today was a dream or not. "No it was definitely real." I murmured before drifting off to a good nights sleep.
The next morning I woke up super early to practice on the courts. I thought I'd be the only one there but of course my arch rival had to be their too.
"You're really taking this seriously aren't you (l/n)-chan?" I smirked slightly and muttered "Of course! Just because I've gotten into the team doesn't mean I should stop working hard!" Akito smiled.
"That's a great way of thinking. Usually people just give up when entering the team. They only did it for the title of 'being in the world's greatest team'. He seemed disheartened as he said that. I ran down to him and took the ball off of him. "Well I'm here for you captain and don't think I'm giving up any time soon!" I ran off with the ball.
"Hey I was using that!" He yelled chasing after me. I laughed at the sight, at least I'd cheered him up. Now it was time to get serious.
