Chapter 1: Taylor
It was a windy, darkened night. Plip, plop, plip. Rain showered down and etched across the window. Thunder roared, lightning flashed, trees danced. I sat on the black leather couch reading my Greek mythology textbook merrily.
"Tay, what are you doing up so late?" my twin brother, Justin Mastorian Irvin, asked wearily.
"Couldn't sleep so I decided to read." I replied fully awake and happily.
"Tay, tomorrow is a gargantuan day for us." Justin said whilst getting himself a glass of water.
By the way, I'm Taylor 'Tay' Irvin, a powerful sorceress. At least, that's what my step mom calls me. I've een home schooled my whole 14 year life alongside my twin brother Justin. My dad says it's because of our so-called true heritage and prophecy. The Irvin family is a family of witches and wizards, something called the Hidden Realm barrier hides our magic from mortals.
Anyways, that's my shorts little summary, back to reality.
"Justin, you're acting like one of us is getting married or something. Sit down." I said attempting to calm him down.
"Tomorrow is our 15th birthday! We finally get to learn about our true heritage and prophecy!" he retorted reminding me about how we would learn about or true selves, the Irvin twins, the potential prophesized children. "We have to pay super close attention! You know that we were supposed to learn about this when we were 9 and the barrier is fading, our magic will be known and who knows what that could cause!" he shouted. "Do you even care? We fought our fate for years and if we truly are the prophesized children we could save the world!"
"Do you even care?" Justin's words rang in my head, that really hurt. I slapped him across the face as hard as I could.
"I DO CARE JUSTIN! DO YOU EVEN CARE?" I shouted at him as a single tear of anger slipped down my pale left cheek.
"I do care, TAYLOR!" he shouted at me standing up.
"Yeah, hope you know how I felt!" I sanpped back storming off to my room.
Right as I slammed my creaky wooden door shut as hard as I could, lightning flashed by my window.
'Oh god, I hate him sometimes.' I thought as I laid down on my bed.
After approximately an hour, I finally passed out. I had an abnormal dream.
Justin and I had to go on a quest, we had a list of ingredients to find for an Astalaithian Bronze potion. The ingredients were scrawled across the parchment in careful cursive penmanship, 2 spider eyes, 5 catfish scales, 2 ounces of Raven blood, 1 houndravel horn, and 4 Astalaithian leaves. I never learned what a Houndravel was, nor an Astalaithian tree, yet somehow in the dream I had a sensation of knowledge for the two unbeknownst objects. Justin and I were travelling through a thicket, the sky painted gold and gray and blue clouds drifted about. Rain sprinkled all around us as we walked. At one point I halted, there lying on the dirt was a trident, which seemed quite confusing. I thought about what relation tridents may have with mythology, that was the precise moment I realized that this was the cyclops-forged trident for Poseidon, Greek god of the sea. "Oh lord Poseidon, whether gift or trap we shan't except it." I said looking towards the glimmering sunset. Justin seemed confused by my action.
"What...?" Justin's voice was laced with befuddlement and it was etched within his expression.
I instantly woke with a start as I heard footsteps in the hallway and my door unbarred followed by an annoying creak. My father stepped into the bedroom. I looked at my nightstand, my Arylian silver watch read 6:37 am. "Morning birthday girl!" Dad greeted enthusiastically.
"Morning Dad." I responded stretching and yawning, I sat up to hug him. "Dad, there's something I need to inform everyone about."
"Alright." Dad nodded and stood up.
Dad walked out of the room and shut the door. I walked to my closet and pulled out a gray t-shirt, my aviators jacket, black jeans, black socks, and my dark gray Converse high-tops.
I pulled on the clothes and went to my dresser. I brushed my hair and threw it into a high ponytail. I sighed and walked out to go eat breakfast.
Everyone was here except Justin.
"Where's Justin?" I asked sitting down.
"Probably getting ready." my step-mom replied pouring orange juice in Dad's glass.
"He never wants to wake up." Dad sighed and looked into the hallway.
"You can say that again." I rolled my eyes and shook my head.
"There's the birthday boy!" Mom exclaimed and hugged Justin.
"Mom, I'm 15, please stop." Justin groaned as Mom kissed his forehead.
"Never." she said pulling away.
"Whatever." he said taking his seat next to me.
Justin was wearing a red flannel, jeans, and red Converse. His light auburn hair fell in his icy blue eyes due to its messiness.
"Anyways, Dad told me that you, Tay, have something to tell us about." Mom raised her eyebrows and sat down next to Dad.
"Yeah, uh, I had an uneasy dream last night. Justin and I were walking through this thicket and we had this list, it had ingredients for an Astalaithian Bronze potion. 2 spider eyes, 5 catfish scales, 2 ounces of Raven blood, 1 Houndravel horn, and 4 Astalaithian leaves. There was this trident and whatnot, but yeah, pretty much what happened." I said eating my delicious bacon.
"Doesn't sound uneasy at all." Justin shrugged and ate his eggs.
"I didn't say it in full detail." I glared at him and took a sip of juice.
"Drop it, you two." Mom snapped and ate her pancake literally drowned in syrup.
Dad looked at Mom, but I could tell that it wasn't about her comment, it was about what I said. "Adrianna." Dad sounded uneasy.
"This is not what I expected, we can finish breakfast later. We need you to follow us." she waved us towards the hall.
We walked down the hall and opened the door to the attic. Mom climbed the ladder first, then Dad, then Justin, I climbed last.
I could barely see anything through the midnight black darkness. I heard shuffling, but Justin was right by me, I could make out Mom's figure, and Dad was right by her. We all stood still, no one moved. A figure emerged from a pile of boxes and towered over us. I backed up. The large figure let out a deep, evil, maniacal, murderous, sadistic laugh.
