Chapter 5

When Tempest reappeared, she broke down into tears. All the anger she'd been keeping inside about Cassius had suddenly burst when she'd seen Cassius standing peacefully outside by the sea. Of anyone to deserve peace, it wasn't him. Not after lying to her for years before going straight to lying to Keefe.

Regaining her composure, Tempest pulled her dark hair away from her eyes and looked around. She sighed when she saw no one else there. On one hand, she didn't have to worry about anyone seeing her crying, but on the other, she had no idea where she was. Putting the pathfinder into her bag, she smiled to herself when she realized she had an obscurer. She pulled it out and activated it, not bothering to wonder about why she just happened to have it in her bag.

Making herself levitate, Tempest didn't have to go very far before figuring out where she was. A large green sign soon came into view with the words, "Chicago, IL. 10 miles."

"Chicago?" Tempest muttered. "I must've been way off if I ended up in Illinois instead of Califor-" Tempest paused and made herself drop closer to the ground as a ring of black formed around her vision. Rubbing her eyes with the back of her hand, she frowned when it didn't fade. "What?"

The ring only grew bigger as she hovered there, and it grew quickly. Seconds later, it obscured nearly everything she'd been able to see. What? This shouldn't be happening. Not yet at least! She felt her feet hit the ground, and heard what sounded like glass shattering, but even those faded away. The black was all around her, limiting what she saw, heard, and felt. Soon, she could barely keep a single train of thought, like when you're finally falling asleep and are so tired that thinking is impossible.

When her vision finally cleared, Tempest couldn't tell how long it had been. She found herself laying on the ground, her obscurer still in her hand. "What... what was that?" She asked herself as she sat up, "That's not supposed to happen until after I find them..." her mind went back to the prophecy.

You may have fought till war was won
But the battle's only just begun.
The hidden child walks alone
As shadows break her heart of stone

Daughter of Love, heed this warning.
The Lord of the Night, to you will be calling.
In dreams as cold and black as death
He will not stop till he steals your breath.

Journey far below the Earth
And search for the elf of human birth.
For when all is said all is done,
Your two fallen allies are greater than one.

Death knocks at every door
But you were made for so much more.
The Moonlark's fallen from the skies
And from her ashes a Phoenix shall rise.

The last line repeated itself over and over again in Tempest's mind. When she'd first discovered the prophecy, it had been in a dream. A dream that felt a lot like what had just happened. The world was completely dark, but she could feel herself moving. Then, each verse just came out of a whisper in the black. It had seemed frightening to her at first, but it wasn't as freaky as the entire prophecy put together.

Some parts of the prophecy had seemed blatantly obvious. The "hidden child"? The first 15 years of her life, she was hidden by Cassius. After that, Gisela had told her to talk as little as possible when working with them. According to her, whenever she talked, a small amount of her Beguiler ability leaked out, even when she wasn't trying to. Since she kept her voice down, and Cassius had hidden her before, nobody even knew she existed besides the members of the Neverseen that she worked closely with, and Cassius himself. At least until she got the most powerful elf in the Lost Cities killed, along with her cousin. And then she'd hidden herself by the cliff. She found it hard for anyone else to be a "hidden child".

Other things were so confusing it was annoying. Sophie was the Moonlark, and everyone knew it. But Tempest had no idea who this "phoenix" could be. So far, she'd only come up with the fact that it was probably a pyrokinetic, since that's what phoenixs mostly dealt with. Maybe Marella, or someone else who wasn't working with the Neverseen and manifested as pyrokinetic. Unless the Neverseen made someone to counter the Moonlark who they called Phoenix...

A dog barking in the back of someone's car brought Tempest out of her thoughts. She glanced in the direction of the dog before wrapping her hand around the obscurer and reaching into her bag for her pathfinder. Now that I know where I am, I know which facet of my crystal leads to California. She thought as she rummaged through her things.

She froze when she found her pathfinder. "You've got to be kidding." She muttered as she grabbed a piece of the wand. It was the bottom end of the handle, but there was no crystal on top. Moving everything again, she found the other half of it, but the crystal had been ripped off, leaving small pieces of blue crystal inside the back. "Great. Not only are you going to break the wand, you just had to crush the crystal as well. While the obscurer that I don't actually need barely has a scratch. Cause that's helpful!"

Tempest sighed. "Well, the only other thing I can do is walk... from Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, California..." she sighed again and stood up. Putting the broken pieces of her wand back into her bag, she looked back at the green sign mentioning Chicago. "If Chicago is that way, Los Angeles should be... that way." She moved her hand from pointing in the direction of the sign to her left and started levitating herself in that direction. This is going to take a while.
