Chapter 23
"Well, that took longer than I'd hoped," Arelyn said aloud to no one in particular as she put her pathfinder away. It had taken her a while to find the right facet on the pathfinder, but all that mattered was that she'd gotten there.
Long Island, New York.
It'd been a while since she'd talked with Hazel, who very well might not even be at Camp Half Blood. She could be at Camp Jupiter, for all Arelyn knew. But she had to try here first, since she knew where it was. Besides, she didn't want to deal with the military half bloods Hazel had told her about.
While she'd been lucky enough to arrive hidden from sight, Arelyn still left her hiding place cautiously. Something that she hadn't realized when she was looking for the Lord of the Night was that she wasn't being very careful. If the Neverseen were still around - and they very likely were - then running around through the streets of big cities was probably not the best idea. And even though the closest base to Camp Half Blood that she knew of was empty, it didn't hurt to be of the safe side.
Quickly and carefully Arelyn made her way to the camp. As she walked up to the barrier, she glanced at the large pine tree a ways away. Thalia's pine tree. Somewhere in its branches was the Golden Fleece. Arelyn had seen it once from afar when she'd helped the Neverseen take Camp Half Blood, but that was it. Hazel had told her as much as she could about both the tree and the magical blanket of life, but she didn't know much more than Arelyn did, and neither of them wanted to ask Annabeth or Percy to tell them.
Arelyn walked as far as she could around the barrier. Even though she couldn't see it, she could sort of feel it. It was magic, but maybe that was a perk of being a charger. Or kind of a half blood. Who knows?
Walking around the camp, she waited until she'd spotted any of the 7 demigods she knew. They usually traveled in a large group or in pairs, with Leo doing... whatever he wanted probably. 7th wheel must be rough.
Arelyn froze when she heard two talking people coming towards her. Quickly she ducked out of sight, hoping that they wouldn't think to look too closely at the trees she was hiding behind. Trying to stay as quiet as possible, she tried to identify who was talking. If she knew them, maybe they'd understand why Hazel would likely want to talk. If not...she needed an alibi stat.
All Arelyn could really tell about the two of them was that it was a girl and a boy talking. The girl's voice sounded a lot like Hazel's, but she didn't recognize the boy's voice at all. Maybe it's Hazel talking to someone I don't know. Or it's someone who just sounds a lot like Hazel but has no clue who I am and then I have to make an excuse, which could turn out badly.
As the two of them walked away, Arelyn glanced at the pair. She watched a familiar girl with cinnamon colored curly hair leaving with an unfamiliar boy. He had tan skin, was just a bit shorter than Hazel, and had wavy, red hair that was almost the color of flames. The boy looked like a child compared to Hazel, and far more fragile, like a glass statue.
There has been times where Arelyn had wished she had some other ability, like a telepath, but now she would've preferred to be a vanisher. That way she could follow Hazel and this other kid until they split, and then she could talk to Hazel alone. But no, she was a begulier - which was more likely some Aphrodite gift - and a charger. Yay. That meant following them the hard way!
Slowly Arelyn trailed the two of them. Judging by how Hazel was pointing things out, she assumed the boy was new and Hazel was giving him a tour. That... was a surprising change in luck. That it just happened to be Hazel who was giving the tour, and that they just happened to get close enough for Arelyn to tell who they were. It could've been coincidence, but usually those don't turn out that well for her.
Hazel and the boy stopped at the top of Half Blood Hill. By the way they were talking, Arelyn guessed the tour was pretty much over. Carefully stepping through the barrier, she quickly tried to find a place to hide. Pulling up the hood of her cloak - the one the Neverseen had given her all those years ago - she tried to stay as still and quiet as possible.
Unfortunately, she was either too loud or two slow, because the boy was pointing in her general direction. He then gestured to his arm and Arelyn felt her throat tighten. The Neverseen symbol was still there. Hazel would likely panic if she didn't do anything.
Slowly Arelyn stepped into sight. She watched Hazel's expression change from fear to joy as she pulled off her hood. Hazel ran down the hill towards her, the boy following close behind.
"Tempest!" Hazel exclaimed happily as she came to a stop.
"Hey, Hazel. What's happened around here?"
Hazel shrugged, "I decided not to leave until it was fulfilled. Just in case."
Arelyn nodded. Obviously Hazel was trying to keep the boy from knowing too much about the prophecy. She didn't quite understand why, but she didn't really want to explain it to him, so maybe it was for the better.
"Well, you don't need to worry about the first 3 parts. I'm pretty sure those are under control now."
Hazel looked at her surprised, but she didn't press. "This is Bren. He's a new camper."
"Do you stay here too?" Bren asked Arelyn, who smiled.
"I could," she stole a quick glance at Hazel, "But I like to wander."
"Are you a daughter of Posiden?"
Arelyn laughed quietly, "No, I'm not. I just go by Tempest instead of my real name."
Bren nodded his understanding before looking back at Hazel, "When will I learn who my godly parent is?"
"You'll known if the claim you." Hazel told him with a smile, "Come, I'll show you the cabins." She looked back at Arelyn and lowered her voice so it was almost a whisper, "And then we can talk. Meet you at Hades cabin."
Yes! Finally! I actually updated! Wow, I'm surprisingly proud of myself. Anyways, sorry for the filler, but we are actually close to done. Man, I have no idea what I'll do once this story's completed. (Jk, I have, like, 17 different story ideas, along with my need to edit Forgotten Power, so I'll still be busy) So, I hope you liked this chapter, and I'll hopefully see y'all tomorrow! Bye!
