Chapter 14

It wasn't very hard to find where the Lord of the Night was hiding. South Dakota didn't have very many large cities, and it was easy for Tempest to guess which one he was in. Even then, South Dakota's biggest city was small compared to one's like LA, and Tempest was glad for the change of pace. If course, it's still a lot of people. Tempest thought, but even her negative thoughts didn't discourage her. This will probably be one of the easiest parts of this journey.

Tempest only went to one city before finding the Lord of the Night, which was Sioux Falls. It was, by far, the biggest city in South Dakota, and was easy to blend in among the different people. Now. She thought as she walked in a sidewalk along a busy road near a gas station, If I was some jerk who called myself the Lord of the Night and was hiding in Sioux Falls, where would I be?

"How'd you learn I was here?" The Lord of the Night's voice startled her - though the chill that came with it didn't help - but she couldn't keep a grin off her face when his voice shook slightly.

"Simple." Tempest whispered to keep the people driving or running near her from thinking she was crazy, "I got some information from an extremely reliable source."

"Well, it won't do you much good. There's enough places to hide for me to not be found."

"LA is bigger, and yet I still found the Underworld just fine."

"...So. And elf told you where I was."

" Good guess. " Tempest lowered her voice even more as two girls ran past her before continuing their conversation, "How'd the humans learn about you, though?"

"The demigods, actually."

Tempest forced herself to keep her expression from changing as another woman, with curly blonde hair and blue eyes hurried past her. "You expect me to believe that?"

"Its true. The myth of the Lord of the Night is as old as the peace treaty between humans and elves."

"Sure. But how does that explain demigods?"

" Well, have you ever noticed a similarity between elves and demigods? Besides the elves never dying and the lack of goblins and gnomes around the demigods? "

"Like, their abilities? Or how people are more important depending on who their family is?"

" Exactly. There are a few other similarities that aren't relevant to what I'm trying to say, but you get the idea. "

"Well, what about it?"

" Demigods and elves have similar ways abilities work, because elves and demigods used to train together. "

Tempest forced herself not to laugh as she went across a busy street. "Nice story. Care to give me another one? Maybe one that isn't a lie?"

" I'm serious. Back when elves and humans lived peacefully together, demigods would use elves as their cover in case they accidentally used their abilities in front of mortals. That was before the Mist was used to cover up the mythological. Elves were fine with them saying they were elves, and soon the two groups became good friends. Elves and demigods would teach each other what they knew about their abilities and would sometimes celebrate different holidays with each other. I wouldn't be surprised if the councilors all that time ago met the Olympians themselves.

"There was one problem, though; the elves and demigods were around each other so much that the demigods' scent started to rub off into the elves. The monsters of that time couldn't tell the difference between the two, and elves started being killed instead of demigods. This pushed the elven council to distance themselves from the demigods. Unfortunately, the half bloods considered this a possible act of war, and a group of them managed to convince some mortals that they were to be feared. This ended up leading to the sinking of Atlantis."

"Let me guess; both groups continued to teach others the ways the other groups taught them, even after they forgot about them?"

" Exactly. "

"Why are you telling me all this?"

" Well, some of it was simply explaining a question you asked. The rest was to distract you from going the right way. "

Tempest stopped and turned around, looking for some side road she had missed. "Jerk." She spat as she walked back the way she'd come, causing the Lord of the Night to chuckle.

"Did you ever expect me to be nice to you?"

" Well, I'm not dead yet, so I consider that a win. "

"It'll be more fun to kill you in person."

"Gathered that." Tempest grumbled as she stared down a pretty sketchy side path before turning onto it, "So, can you watch where I am, or something?"

" Only when you're near me. "

"And yet you know about that whole demigod elf thing?"

"I was part of that. Back then, I was considered both a Shade and Son of Hades."

"How does that work?"

" Well, it basically is just an extremely powerful Shade who can shadow travel. And I say 'back then' because now demigods and elves getting together at all would probably turn out badly. "

"And that's why you wanted me."

"Exactly."

" Look, I get why you are so concerned about both groups' relationships with each other, but having me put them into a war with one another wouldn't turn out very well. Besides, Sophie and Dex died helping the demigods. I don't think they'll be willing to go to war. "

He chuckled again, "You believe that? Of all people, you? I know you were there when your colleagues decided to pay the gods a visit."

Tempest stopped in front of a building with a sign above the door that was so worn out that the words were no longer readable. "That was against my will." She growled, pushing open the door.

"You were still there. Wasn't their entire visit revolving around you and your ability as a Begulier?"

"Again, I didn't want to be there."

"And convincing the gods that the elves would attack them? I don't think anyone thought that would work. And yet, you somehow did."

"Shut up,"  she shut the door to the building without taking the time to look around.

"But what surprised me the most was that Aphrodite was the first to agree. I'm pretty sure nobody thought that charmspeak would work on its creator!"

"Shut up!"

"What's wrong, Tempest? Don't like constant chatter? Now you get where I'm coming from. Still, getting most of them to agree with your contract was impressive. Didn't some of them help you guys capture some important person a while ago? "

"Shut. Up!" Tempest pulled open a door at the other side of the room, revealing a man sitting in a strange throne at the end of the room.

The man laughed. "Welcome to your chat with death."
