Chapter 12

Finally. Tempest thought as she stood in front of the DOA recording studio. This is another reason people can't be trusted; they don't tell you where you need to go until you're desperate.

She'd been looking for the entrance to the Underworld for a while, talking to a few immortals that were surprised she could see who they were through the Mist, but none of them told her where to go. It took her a while to find someone who would actually tell her where to go, and after that her obscured actually came in handy when levitating over large crowds of people. Still, it has taken much longer than she'd have liked.

Taking a deep breath, she stepped through the recording studio's door, making herself look important. The man at the desk glanced up at her when she walked in and opened his mouth to talk. Ignoring him, she grabbed some lusters out of her pocket and tossed them to him. "Where are the elves?"

The man - whose nametag read Charon - caught two of the lusters while the rest fell in the floor. "You're not dead, are you?" He asked as he picked them up, "Why would you need to get into the Underworld?"

"I have some business with the dead. Now show me where the elves are."

"Now listen. You can't just barge in here and demand to-"

Tempest crossed her arms, "Listen Charon. I'm not in the mood for your rules, or whatever it is you're going on about. I just know that I have a prophecy to fulfill, some people to talk to, and that you'll see me again soon enough. Now, let me through." She tried using her Begulier abilities as she put a few more lusters on the table.

Charon paused for a moment before scooping the lusters into his hand and standing up. "Follow me, then."

Charon led her down a hallway and into an elevator. Tempest stood there quietly, ignoring his constant glances at her. When it finally stopped, she hurried forward. I want to get this over with. She thought, Sophie can help me complete the prophecy and then I don't have to worry about this anymore.

Just as she almost reached the land bridge leading to the island of dead elves, Charon stopped her. "What?" She snapped, annoyed by the constant delays.

"Sorry, there's just one thing; you do realize that, once you pass onto the island, I'm not allowed to bring you back, right?"

Tempest shrugged, "I'll take my chances." She pushed him aside and walked across the bridge to the island. I'll just find Sophie and deal with this problem when I have to.

As soon as she stepped on the island, she small amount of activity happening around her stopped. The island was dreary and lacked anything remotely happy. Everything seemed to be tinted in a strange shade of grey, and she people she passed were just pale outlines in the darkness. Now, if I was a hero of the elves who wasn't actually supposed to die, where would I be?

Tempest wandered aimlessly, trying to ignore the spirits' gazes as she walked. It made her uncomfortable to know that there were dead elves - some of which she herself may have killed unwillingly - watching her movements as if she were being judged for something. More than likely her awful life.

"Tempest?" A familiar voice drew her out of her thoughts. Slowly, she turned to face the spirit behind her.

"Hey, Dex."

"How'd you get here?"

Tempest shrugged, "I walked."

"You know what I meant."

"Well, I'm still alive, if you were wondering. I literally did walk here."

"Why here, of all places?"

"I need to talk to Sophie."

Dex said nothing. He only nodded and gestured for her to follow him. He took her across the large, dull island to another land bridge which split and led to two very different islands. The one on the left was much more inviting than the one Tempest and Dex were on; it seemed to almost shine with light, laughter could be heard over the sound of whatever river these islands floated on, and it even looked like plants were growing - which didn't seem possible, and yet, there it was.

The one on the right, however, was the exact opposite. It looked even darker than the gloomy one connected to it, and it was covered in black sand and sharp rocks. Tempest could barely make out what else there was there, as the entire island was surrounded in what seemed to be thick grey fog, but for a moment she thought she saw a figure over there.

"That's the island we send the worst people to." Dex explained when he saw where Tempest was looking, "We have sending people there, and we rarely do. I think there's only three there total." He pointed to the other island, "Sophie's over there. Pretty much everyone's allowed to wander except the people condemned to the weird island for criminals, but Sophie said she prefers to stay there with Kenric and Jolie."

"What about you?" Tempest asked, trying to keep her surprise from showing by reminding herself everyone here was dead.

Dex shrugged, "I usually stay here. Sure, it's nicer there, but I just want to make sure no one else shows up. It's pretty useless, since I can't actually do anything, but I prefer it to sitting around on that supposed paradise. Come on." He waved her on and the two of them started walking down towards the bright, lively island.

They walked in silence for a while, Tempest trying to take everything in. This is where Sophie and Dex lived now. Where the dead elves would end up. Where she would possibly end up, if Cassius wasn't lying about that, too. It was weird; as if she were walking in her own grave, except with a lot more space and people, and less silence.

"Do you blame me?" She finally asked.

"For what?"

"For letting you and Sophie die, even though I could've done something?"

"Well, you weren't the person who killed us, we're you?"

"I may as well have been."

Dex shook his head, "That was the Chimera. The Chimera was what killed us, not you. Sure, you may have been there, but trying to keep one of us from dying would've probably ended up with all three of us ending up here anyway. "

"Or it could've save your lives. People care about you two more than anyone will about me."

Dex shrugged, "We'll never know. And I don't think that's the case. What about your brother?"

"He doesn't even know I'm his sibling. I'm pretty sure he still blames me for your deaths, and you guys should too."

"Well, I'm not really like that. And I know for a fact that Sophie doesn't hold grudges against pretty much anyone. At least not in the way Fitz does. Stop being hard on yourself."

Tempest was about to reply when they arrived on the island. It was easy to see why Sophie liked it so much compared to the other islands, but Tempest didn't want to stay long. Along with Dex, she looked around the island until they found Sophie, sitting with Kenric and Jolie by what seemed to be the fountain in Atlantis.

"Sophie!" Dex called as they made their way towards the group.

"What's up, Dex?" Sophie asked. Slowly, Tempest stepped forward.

"I need your help with something." She said , refusing to meet the Moonlark's eyes.

Sophie looked at her for a moment before addressing the two spirits beside her, "I'll be right back." She stood up and came over to Tempest, "Come on. I know where we can talk."

Hey guys! Sorry, this chapter was supposed to come out yesterday, but when I'd almost finished it, I'd closed out of the app for a while and when I came back most of it was deleted. I also ran out of motivation to do literally anything except lay on my bed and stare at the ceiling for a while, so... yeah. Anyways, I hope you liked this chapter, and I'll see y'all later. Bye!
