3. Forever young
It was a new day as a demon slayer!
I got up early and packed my bags quickly. I walked in the kitchen and packed some things, I heard him - he thinks I didn't but he is too obvious.
I waited a little longer and as he reached out for my shoulder I quickly grabbed his hand, twisting it behind his back. "OW! ow ow ow ok yn-chan you won!" I giggled and let Senjuros hand go. He rubbed the spot with a pout "I never can surprise you" "Yeah cause your steps are WAY too loud." I ruffled his hair in a loving manner, He was like a little brother to me by now. I was 16 now and he was 10, Kyojuro was 16 now and recently ranked up to Hinoe.
"Please...be careful Yn. And write me letters!" I smiled and nodded at him. "Senjuro I promise you to visit again and to check up on you from time to time...please tell Shinjuro my regards and that I head out. And...stay strong little one" I sighed and pulled him in a tight hug. I knew how harsh Shinjuro could be, I knew it from my brother after all. He hugged me back and nodded "I will.".
I often came back home to visit them between missions, but leaving again was always hard.
I smiled and picked up my bag "I will head out now...wish me luck!" He nodded "Good luck yn-chan! And work hard to keep up with Kyojuro!" I rolled my eyes teasingly "yeah...goodbye". I inhaled sharply and turned to leave. I stood in the door frame and stared at the orange sky, sunrise. Out there was the big, dangerous world full of maneating demons and I would fight against them. I swallowed thickly and took a step outside. "Yn?" I turned my head to Senjuro "you can do it. I am proud of you already". I smiled at his assurance and nodded "yes...". And with that I ran out of the residence, right into a new adventure!
I ran along the path and turned my head again, waving one last time to senjuro who still watched me from the doorway. I'd make Shinjuro proud!
After all these years he became like a father figure to me and my whole life purpose was to make him proud now.
I chirped gently and my dove immediately landed on my shoulder. It was weird, at the day of the selection we all got our crows but mine turned out to be an dove instead of a crow...but another boy had a even smaller bird so I guess I can work with it. Also my dove was such a gentle and friendly bird, I like it. I gave it some bread and pet its head "where do I need to go, love?" It chirped a few times "head north! North West a demon was sighted. Women disappeared and you need to find out!" I nodded. "North West we head!" I cheered and started jogging along the path.
It was a short Trip because by noon I arrived at the smaller village. I hummed and walked around the streets to explore it, after all it would be good to get an idea of how the paths are connected and to see where people lived. Just when i walked into a shop people started whispering behind my back. I frowned slightly and went straight to the shop keeper "Excuse me?" The older woman turned to me and her eyes widened. "Hello young girl, how may I help you?" I bowed politely "there were reports of a demon kidnapping woman around this area and I am here to investigate. Did you notice anything suspicious the last days?" The woman looked nervously around and then shook her head "such thing as demons don't exist, love. These women just decided to leave this small sleepy village to live in the big city." I frowned. "Okay well...if you seem to notice anything please don't hesitate to ask for help". And with that I left the shop, just when I opened the door someone snuck a small piece of paper in my Haori. I walked out and turned around the corner, pulling it out.
"We aren't allowed to speak about her. Wait on the bridge at dawn"
I frowned and quickly crumbled the paper putting it back in my pocket, so the woman in there was just too scared to talk about their situation...
I looked up to the sky, maybe an hour or 2 until dawn - enough time to grab something to eat. I looked around and found a small restaurant, as I entered all people turned their head. Same thing as in the shop, they all had wide eyes and started whispering when I walked pass them. I sat at a lonely table and crossed my arms until a waitress came "hello Miss, what can I get for you?" I nodded at her "Hello. A portion of ramen and some green tea please." She nodded and turned around quickly almost running away. I waited patiently for my food and analysed the room meanwhile, the people inside all were around 30 already. In general I only saw elder people here, I didn't see one young person or even child around, odd.
Maybe that's why they are all so shocked about me, because I am young? No it was definitely because I wore a demon slayer uniform. I hid my sword behind my black Haori to not scare people but I think they know I carry one along. As my food was served I thanked the woman "ah excuse me?" "What else do you need?" I flinched in my seat by her sudden Rudeness in tone. "Uh- I just wanted to ask why here are no children? I didn't meet one since I am here" "children...uh..we...uhm" she looked around with panicked eyes "we don't keep children here they usually move with their families away because of...the ...uhm" I raised an eyebrow "they all move to the city. You know" she laughed nervously "city is bigger and better" I nodded slowly "thank you?". And as soon as I spoke my words out she ran off, now I knew something was wrong here.
I ate my food and thought about tonight, I was pretty sure the demon kidnapped the children and young families. Now I gotta find out why and stop that demon, the person giving me the note said it was a her. I looked out the window and noticed the sun setting. Other people did too because they basically ran out of the restaurant and people on the street ran in their houses. I slowly stood up and paid my food "maybe you should close your restaurant and go home for today miss." The woman on the other side just frowned at me but when I tapped my sword she seemed to realise. "Y-yes perhaps that's best. Have a good night" I smiled at her and left the restaurant. I saw the bridge earlier, so I headed there. I was ready for a trap so I kept one hand near my sword while walking on that bridge. I saw a figure standing on it, looking down to the river. The person seemed nervous so I tapped their shoulder lightly. "WAH- oh you scared me." The person laid their hand on their chest and sighed out "sorry...you wanted to meet me?" "Yes...its about...her" I frowned "her?".
The person looked around "there is a demon ruling this town! We sacrifice children and young blood to her for her to keep us alive" I frowned "you SACRIFICE them?" She nodded and pulled down the robe above their head, revealing a young woman. "She drinks their blood to stay young and-" suddenly she stopped talking "Miss are you okay?" I shook her by her shoulder worried but her eyes turned white as they rolled to the back of her head and suddenly she fell into my arms unconscious. "MISS?" I felt my hands wettening and looked at them, blood. I laid the woman down, she was stabbed in the back!
I stepped back and looked around, the sun was set. The demon must be here somewhere, hiding in the shadows. I quickly took of my robe and wrapped it around the woman, she was still alive, I had to keep her warm.
A giggle made me stand up and look around again, taking in stance I pulled out my sword. "Show yourself".
I felt a presence but it felt like it was all over this bridge. Just then from above a creature jumped down. It looked like a tall, pale woman with red eyes and long fingernails -looking like claws. I glared at her and tightened my grip on my sword. "My oh my now look at this young and smooth skin of yours!" She seemed to be ecxited "and oh what beautiful beautiful hair you got...I can't wait to devour you" she licked her lips. "Come and try bite me then" I grinned at her. "But first- why do you do all of this?" I pointed my sword at her. "Younger blood is so much better than this old disgusting crap. These people give me their younger ones to keep me strong and young and in exchange I don't kill them. Opposite quiet, I protect this town from other demons coming in." I scoffed "oh what a nice deal". She nodded "but now let's eat! Before your beautiful youth expires" and with that she dashed forward, she wasn't very fast. I easily dodged her attack and cut her arm off in the same movement.
She screeched "my beautiful skin! You ugly brat will pay for that!" I swung my blade to whip off the blood. "No you will pay for abusing these poor souls" I cracked my neck carefully "Flame breathing first form - unknowing fire!" I took a deep breath and charged forward with high speed, aiming to decapitating them in one slash.
My sword hit her neck and it rolled off her neck. I heard her Cursing at me and yelling at me that this wasn't fair. I kneeled down next to her head and sighed "may you rest in peace wherever your poor soul is heading now. May you be reborn as a healthy human" her eyes widened at my words and within a few seconds her head and body turned into ashes, rising to the sky. I watched for a second and then stood up, walking over to the woman from earlier. I picked her up and knocked on one of the doors from the houses across the bridge, a man opened with a scared look on his face "she is injured please look after her. I have to keep moving." "B-but what happened? What about the demon?" "The demon stabbed her when she gave me details on that bridge. But the demon won't harass you and your village anymore." He carefully took the woman off my hands and nodded quickly "thank you...thank you so much!" I smiled brightly at his words "you're welcome! After all that's what I am here for. Please take care" i bowed a last time and walked off.
As I walked out the village a smile plastered my face, I did it. I finished my mission and saved someone's life's! I whistled out for my dove and she came flying towards me immediately, landing on my left shoulder. "Hello Love. Is there a new job for me?" Dove just chirped and picked on my hair. "Yeah yeah okay." I sighed and gave her a small piece of bread out of my pocket and then it spoke "new mission 30km West from here". I nodded "that's must be a about a 6 hour walk. 5 if I hurry...okay let's go!" I took a cloth and cleaned my sword while walking West. After cleaning it I put it back in its halter and yawned.
30km...that was quiet far away I wonder what's going on there. But it didn't matter , in the end I had to kill every demon that came across my way! Maybe I will even kill Muzan one day...
Muzan the Demon Lord.
Rengoku-sama told us about him, thinking about Rengoku I remembered Senjuro. I quickly grabbed a piece of paper and a pen out of my bag and started writing while walking:
"Dear Senjuro,
I finished my mission tonight and it went very well. One person got injured unfortunately but nothing too serious. I am fine as well, just tired.
The demon was a woman drinking blood from young people to keep herself young and fresh. The village sacrificed their children for safety, so cruel... I am sure she doesn't work directly for Muzan, for that she was way too self centred. I am heading now to my next destination for another mission. I am very ecxited, I had the best feeling earlier when a villager thanked me for my duty! It felt like the fire in my heart burnt a little bigger for a moment! I hope you're doing good?
Write me back if possible! I am ecxited to hear from you, little one.
Until then, farewell Senjuro!
Sincerely Y/N"
I finished the letter and secured it on the foot of my Dove "Love? Would you please bring this message to Senjuro Rengoku? Home?" It chirped loudly and then flew off towards south, I smiled "thank you!".
I continued my way towards the next village, this was going to be a long night....
