Chapter Seventeen: Escaping Reality

Bella took shaky breaths as she pushed past drunk and sober teenagers, weaving herself through the crowd. Her brain clouded with disturbing thoughts about Alice's vision as she shimmied past a buff football player. She had to get to Alice. Her heartbeat reverberated through her eardrums as she made sure she kept Alice in her range of vision. Teens grumbled at her rudeness, but she couldn't care less.

A boy's elbow rammed into her ribs which made Bella gasp in pain, as she toppled over into a girl. The girl snapped at Bella and soon her whole abdomen was drenched in beer. Bella narrowed her eyes at the girl but pushed past her. She scanned the area that Alice was and cursed under her breath. Alice was gone. Edward had gotten to her before she could. A tap on her shoulder made her spin around on her heels.

"Bella?" Jacob asked. "What's going on?"

Pain poked at Bella's stomach and she gently placed her hand on her stomach. "Alice had a vision and it's not good."

"The Volturi?" Seth questioned from behind Jacob.

Bella shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know where they went."

Jacob inhaled the air through his mouth. "They're outside." People diverted away from Jacob and Seth as they walked through the cluster of teens to the back door. Seth opened the door and Bella and Jacob walked outside where the Cullen's --except Esme and Carlisle-- were standing. Everyone seemed tense, but Edward seemed the most tense. His hands were balled up in fists at his sides and his eyes were a dark gold, narrowed at the ground. His muscles showed up under his shirt.

"What's going on?" Bella asked, descending down the back stairs onto the grass, which was illuminated by the light from the house. Everyone stayed quiet, which irritated Bella.

"She asked a question," Jacob mumbled. Edward's head snapped up and he bared his teeth. Before Bella could register what was happening, Edward has Jacob pinned against a tree, his forearm across Jacob's neck. Bella ran up to them and looked Edward in the eyes.

"Let him go," Bella hissed. The two ignored Bella, killer glares on their faces. Bella knew what she had to do. She implanted her hands on Edward's arm and ripped it away from Jacob's neck. Surprisingly, it swung back, but the death looks remained. Bella rolled her eyes and managed to push the two away.

"Watch your mouth, mongrel," Edward snapped.

"Whatever you say, bloodsucker."

"Stop it, both of you!" Bella shouted. "There is no reason to fight! I'm sick and tired of you getting so angry Edward and I'm sick of you aggravating Edward, Jacob!"

Edward's gaze softened and his eyes fell on Bella. "I'm sorry," He muttered. Bella sighed and walked back to Alice and the others. Jacob and Edward followed quietly without complaining.

Bella shifted her weight to one leg and crossed her arms over her chest. "Now," Bella stated. "Will someone please tell me what's going on?" Everyone's eyes either landed on Edward or Alice. Alice sighed and looked at Bella.

"Someone has assembled a newborn army and they are coming for us. They want to kill you. We assume it's Victoria, but I haven't seen her in my latest visions."

"Newborn army?" Bella inquired as she felt Edward's arms wrap around her waist. She ignored the tingling sensation in her hips and continued to watch Alice.

"A bunch of newly changed vampires," Jasper elaborated. "They're stronger than us but very immature. They won't know what hit them." Jasper grinned.

"We're in," Jacob said, his eyes darting from Cullen to Cullen.

"That will be perfect," Jasper said, a small smirk on his face. "They won't even know the wolves exist." Bella bit the inside of her cheek, remembering when she was attacked when she first came to Forks. Bella shuddered at the thought.

"How long do we have until they come?" Bella asked as Edward stroked her hands with his cold hands that were still wrapped around her waist.

Alice wrinkled her nose and dazed, but then shook her head back into reality. "A week," Edward said for Alice.

"That fits in enough time for training," Jasper said, his mouth expanding into a goofy grin.

"Training?" Bella asked. "For what?"

"Fighting against the newborns. We have to prepare ourselves and the wolves," Jasper said, nodding his head at Jacob and Seth.

Jacob rubbed his hands together like a cartoon villain. "I'm excited."

Bella rolled her eyes. "Where do I fit in?"

Edward chuckled. "You'll be staying at the reserve with Jacob's dad and Seth's mom."

Bella unwrapped Edward's hands from her waist and turned to look at him with a glare. "That's not happening. I want to help."

"The only way you can help me is staying at the reserve."

"She actually has a point," Rosalie mumbled. Edward turned his head and narrowed his eyes at his sister. Rosalie ignored her brother and looked at Jasper. "She could be useful with her scent. It could make the newborns go off track."

"We could lead them to the battlefield using her scent," Jasper mused.

Edward curled his upper lip up, showing off his canines. His eyes darkened with anger at Rosalie and Jasper. Bella took his hand in her own, and he retreated.

"We will start training tomorrow. We will also choose a place to battle," Jasper concluded. "Now, let's get these teenagers out of our house."

Bella released Edward's hand and was the first to enter the busy house. She pushed past teenagers who scowled at her and then swung a chair around. She pulled herself on it and saw Edward chuckle in the corner of her eye. She cupped her mouth and then shouted "Party's over!" The teens groaned and Jasper and Emmett opened the front doors, ushering the teens out and making sure they got to their car safely.

After most of the group cleared out, Edward held out his hand and gently pulled Bella down from the chair. Bella half smiled as Edward kissed her cheek. Rosalie threw her a garbage bag and the Cullens cautiously started to clean, for there was still some humans there.

"Do you guys need any help?" a voice asked. Bella turned her head to see Jessica, Angela, Eric and Mike. "We can help if you'd like," Angela said.

"It's alright," Bella said. "We've got it covered. I will see you guys Monday." The four said goodbye and then walked to Mike's car and drove off.

Bella let out a relieved sigh at the sight of the empty house. She opened the garbage bag and then walked upstairs. She bent down to pick up a few cups and food pieces. "I'll check the rooms," Edward said. Bella nodded and watched as Edward walked off, his body a blur. Bella walked to the bathroom and flinched seeing two teens making out in the bathtub. Bella clapped her hands together.

"Party's over." The boy sat up and pulled the girl out of the tub. They rushed down the stairs and she heard a car turn on and leave the driveway. Bella picked up two red cups and then threw four beer bottles into her garbage bag. Bella looked at her dress, which was ruined because of the beer. Bella gently closed the door and then pulled the dress over her head and kicked off her shoes. She turned on the warm water and closed the shower curtain.

The beads of warm water bounced of Bella's skin as she rubbed away the stickiness of the beer. She swiftly washed her hair and then turned the shower off, hearing a thump in the bathroom. She pulled the curtain back to peek her head out, leaving the shower curtain to cover her nude body.

"I apologize if I startled you," Edward said. "I just thought you needed a towel." He placed the white towel down and then exited the bathroom. Bella's cheeks heated up as she pushed the shower curtain back. She snatched the towel off of the counter and wrapped it around her frail body. Her grip tightened on the towel as she ran to Rosalie's closet.

The door slammed behind her and her grip on the towel released, falling to her ankles. She pulled on a pair of sweatpants and a burgundy shirt. She walked to her bedroom, only stumbling once. She ambled into the room to see Edward with his hands behind his head, shirtless. Bella's heart thumped against her chest, which made Edward chuckle.

Bella pulled herself on to the bed and Edward secured an arm around her waist, bringing her close. Bella gently placed her head on Edward's frigid chest. She brought his other hand over and started to mess around with his fingers. "How do you do it?"

Bella looked up at Edward with confused what. "How do I do what?"

Edward tangled his fingers in the bottom of Bella's brown hair. "How are you able to handle me?"

Bella half-smiled. "It's quite simple, really."

Edward let out a cold breath, which flowed down on to Bella's lips. "Tell me," He pleaded.

"It's a secret," Bella said pursing her lips. Edward let out a playful growl and pulled himself up, hovering above Bella. She raised her good hand and brushed away a bronze lock from his forehead. Her fingers trailed down the side of his face to his neck, tracing his muscles. Bella half-smiled, trying to ignore the pit in her stomach.

She was still upset at Edward for what he had said earlier that day. Maybe if she ignored it, her bad feelings would vanish. Bella lowered her hand, for her previous feelings were hitting her like a tidal wave. "Do you honestly think we have no future together?" Bella whispered quietly. Edward's crooked smile disappeared and he removed himself from over top of Bella's body. Bella sat up, her back facing Edward.

She ran a hand through her brown hair and looked down at the carpeted floor. His hand snaked around her abdomen, turning her around to face him. She refused to look up. His hand cupped her chin, lifting her head up to look into his golden eyes. "You're the only thing I see in my future."

Bella's heart swelled with love making Bella smiled. "I love you, Isabella Marie Swan."

"And I love you, Edward Cullen." Edward chuckled and Bella rested her head back on his chest, his cold skin soothing her own skin. Edward started humming some notes while stroking Bella's hair. Bella let out a ragged, short breath and closed her eyes. The world slowly started to fade away as Bella fell into a slumber.

Edward.

Edward mentally groaned. Sometimes he hated the ability to read minds. "Yes Alice?" he said in a low voice, careful not to wake Bella.

You better do it soon.

"Alice, I will do it when I think the time is right. I already have a plan."

Well hurry it up. We're all patiently waiting.

"Don't rush me Alice."

Grow some balls Eddie!

"Damn it Emmett shut up."

Jeez okay Mr. Grumpy Pants.

Edward looked down at Bella, who was snoring quietly, her legs sprawled out on the bed. Her toes would curl every so often, and she would mutter something under her breath. Her sleep talking usually consisted of her mumbling Edward's name or Renesmee's. It was quite entertaining to listen to her dream.

Edward half smiled and pulled a piece of hair off of Bella's face. She was so perfect. Edward had never really been fond of that word, but when he first saw Bella, it was the first word that came to his mind. She may not have the body of a model or the face of an actress, but that didn't matter to Edward at all. She didn't know she was perfect. Edward let out a sigh, wishing he could explain everything he couldn't say. Even being almost an one hundred year old vampire, he still got tongue tied.

Bella rolled over, his arm under her fragile body. Edward stroked her arm, the cold skin making Bella shiver. Bella kicked the covers off of her bare legs and rolled back, facing Edward. She nudged her head onto his bare chest and let out a small exhale.

Bella's eyes fluttered open at the smell of bacon. She saw Edward holding a tray with eggs, bacon and toast. "Breakfast in bed?" Bella questioned sleepily, pushing herself upwards. "I must be pretty special."

Edward chuckled as he placed the tray on Bella's lap. "Renesmee actually helped as well."

Bella half smiled and leaned her head upwards as Edward pecked her lips. She picked up her fork as edward sat on the end of the bed. "So no special occasion?" Bella asked as she scooped scramble eggs on to her fork.

"Am I not allowed to treat my beautiful girl to some food?" The corners of Edward's lips tugged upwards and he showed off his pearly white teeth.

"Of course you're allowed,"Bella said with a giggle as she started to eat. Bella ate quietly and she would occasionally tease Edward on staring at her. He would just shake his head and continue grinning like a five year old.

When Bella was finishing her last piece of bacon, she heard a knock on the door. "Come in princess," Edward stated. Renesmee bounded in with a beautiful smile on her face. She jumped up on the bed.

"You're looking better," Bella noted.

"I feel great!" Renesmee said. "My cold is all gone!"

"I'm glad." Renesmee smiled and started talking about her stay at the hotel with Carlisle and Esme, and how she went swimming in a pool, and went on the elevator several times. Bella chuckled and leaned back against the headboard, Edward beside her.

"We should get ready," Edward stated. Bella knew exactly what he meant. Renesmee's face contorted into a puzzled look.

"I want to come!" Renesmee whined, pushing back her bronze curls.

Bella looked at Edward. "Does she-"

"She knows the situation. I didn't see a point in keeping it from her."

"Please," She said, sticking out her bottom lip and giving puppy dog eyes.

"As long as you stay near your mother, then you can come."

Renesmee fist bumped the air in success and ran off to her room. Edward took Bella's breakfast tray and Bella stood up, following Renesmee into her room.

Bella sifted through Renesmee's white dresser drawers, looking for something for her daughter to wear that would keep her warm. She decided--with Renesmee's help-- on thick leggings, an army green skirt that reached Renesmee's knees, a white top that had lace sleeves, and an army jacket. Bella turned as Renesmee scurried to get dressed. When she was done, Bella sat on the bed and brushed through Renesmee's bronze curls, which recoiled after the brush ran through them.

Bella did Renesmee's hair into a half up half down hairstyle, and pinned a black bow at the back of her head. Renesmee pulled on her brown combat boots and ran downstairs. She was greeted by Rosalie and Emmett and she played with them as Bella started to get ready.

After finishing her duties in the bathroom, she changed into a dark pair of ripped jeans, a white t-shirt and a pale blue rain coat. She pushed her curls to the right side of her head and pulled on her black converses that went past her ankles. Bella tucked the laces inside the shoe and ambled down the stairs to see Edward holding the keys for Emmett's Jeep. He was talking to Renesmee and Renesmee was giggling.

Edward's eyes gazed up as he started to tickle Renesmee. Renesmee laughed and it made Bella's insides flip. Renesmee's laugh could quiet down a whole room. It was beautiful and perfect. Edward stopped tickling Renesmee and stood up and helped Renesmee up, who was still giggling. "The other's have already left. They wanted to make sure that they got there before the wolves," Edward said. Bella nodded.

"Let's go," Edward said. Bella took Renesmee's hand in her own and the two walked to the garage, Edward not far behind them. He got in the jeep and backed it out of the garage. Bella ushered Renesmee into the back seat and buckled her up in her carseat. Even though she looked like she didn't need one, Edward still insisted that she sat in it. Bella closed the door and pulled herself up in the Jeep, slamming the door behind her.

Edward took Bella's hand, stroking her warm hand--under her cast-- with his cold thumb as he drove into the forest. Bella looked out the window, her eyes glued on the moving scenery. Every so often she would see a bush tremble, but since Edward was relaxed, she figured it was nothing. "Hey Momma?" Renesmee asked, fiddling with her seatbelt buckle.

Bella turned her head to face Renesmee and curved her lips into a small smile. "Yes, angel?" Renesmee pushed a curl behind her ear and then looked at Bella, with her brown eyes. Bella swore she could see small specks of gold sparkling in Renesmee's brown orbs.

"When can you come hunting with us?" Edward looked at Bella in his peripheral vision, his expression asking if he should answer the question. Bella gave her head a small shake and squeezed his hand, signaling for him to return his focus to driving. His gaze relocated to in front of him.

"Soon, sweetie. I promise." Renesmee gave a curt nod, and returned her gaze to her fingernails. Bella kept glimpsing at Renesmee, still astonished by how magnificent she is. What shocked Bella even more was that her DNA ran through that little girl's veins. How she had Bella's eyes and mouth, and how she had Edward's curls and dimples. Bella's eyes flickered to Edward, and his golden eyes twinkled. Bella let out a small breath, her vocal cords chiming together to release a small giggle.

A thought struck Bella and her eyes fell to her stomach. She wondered what it would feel like to have a small human being inside her. Feeling the baby's every moves, and getting to hold the small baby in her arms. Sadness filled Bella, realizing that she would never get that chance. Maybe she and Edward could adopt...

"We're here," Edward said in a soft voice as he unbuckled himself and raced out of the jeep to open Bella's door and help her down. The crisp ground made a crushing sound as Bella placed her foot down on the dirt. She opened the back door of the Jeep, unbuckled Renesmee and helped her out. Renesmee gripped on to Bella's hand as Bella followed Edward to where the rest of the family was. Bella lifted her head up, looking at her surroundings.

The area the were in was surrounded by tall trees and bushes. There was hardly any grass, muddy dirt underneath Bella's feet. Bella smiled at the rest of the family and Edward came up behind her, wrapping his arm around her waist. Bella put her casted arm over Renesmee's shoulder protectively and watched as Renesmee started to play with her jacket.

"What are we waiting for?" Bella inquired in a whisper. Edward opened his mouth to speak, but was cut off by a howl. Bella turned her head to the forest and watched as wolves the size of bears stood on a hill in the clearing, their brooding eyes flickering to each of the Cullens. Renesmee looked down, and Bella could sense she was still upset at Jacob. And so was Edward. His lips were twisted to one side and he had an annoyed look on his face.

Bella nudged him with her elbow, and his annoyed look vanished as he pulled Bella and Renesmee close to them. Bella could instantly recognize which wolf was Jacob, just looking at their eyes. And then there was the fact that he did attack her. Bella shivered and Edward raised an eyebrow down at her.

Carlisle glimpsed over at Edward and Edward nodded, his hand sliding down Bella's back and disappearing into the air. Edward strided forward with Carlisle. Carlisle grinned.

"Welcome friends," He said, his eyes locked on a humongous black wolf. "Jasper has lots of experience with newborn vampires, so today he will be leading us in a training session." A gray wolf snorted and Edward glared at the wolf.

"They still don't trust us, even after all this time," Edward mumbled. She heard Emmett's familiar laugh and looked to see Rosalie batting him on the arm. Alice rolled her eyes and released her grip on Jasper and he walked forward.

He started explaining what they were going to do, and how to avoid certain attacks. Bella zoned out and sat herself on the dirty ground and pulled Renesmee into her lap. Renesmee leaned her head back on Bella's collarbone and Bella wrapped her arms around the little girl's waist. "I love you," She whispered. "Forever and Always."

Renesmee turned around and placed a kiss on Bella's cheek, centimetres away from her lips. "I love you too Momma." Renesmee raised her hand, and placed it on Bella's neck. Images flickered through Bella's brain, and soon Bella could see the whole picture.

It was the day that Bella had arrived in Forks. The scene fast forwarded to when Bella lifted Renesmee up to put the ornament up. Emotions of love and gratefulness filled the air, and Bella instantly knew that it was Renesmee's feelings. Bella smiled as she watched herself tuck Renesmee in, then the whole scene went black.

Bella was sitting in a chair in Alice's bathroom, and Renesmee was sitting in her lap, Renesmee's eyes starting to close and her breathing to slow down. "You can't fall asleep, baby girl. It's a big day for Momma."

"I'm sorry," Renesmee apologized. "I'm just so tired."

"Did you have a nightmare last night?" Bella murmured, stroking Renesmee's cheek. Renesmee shook her head no, her curls bouncing.

"I just couldn't fall asleep. I was so excited." Bella chuckled. Bella stood in the corner of the room, watching herself and her daughter. Something was different. This hadn't happened before. It wasn't a memory, but a dream.

Bella put Renesmee down on the ground and Renesmee ran over to the bathroom counter. Her hair was in curls and she had a small bit of lipgloss on. Her hair was beautifully done, in a french braid with flowers sticking out and bronze curls to frame her face.

She was wearing a white dress that reached her knees. It had a flower near her waist and lace sleeves that reached her elbows. She looked absolutely stunning. Bella then stood up and Bella gasped. Her hair was pulled back into a beautiful bun that tickled the nape of her neck. Her hair had a small sparkle to it and small pieces of hair curled around her jaw.

She was wearing some make-up, just enough to make it look natural. Bella's eyes wandered to her own body and saw she was a pearl white dress, which was a doppelganger to her prom dress, but white. A veil hung from her head and covered her back.

Bella knew exactly what this was. It was her wedding.

The dream started to flicker, and Bella could no longer feel Renesmee's hand on her neck. Bella's eyes fluttered open and she saw Edward standing a few feet away from them, a shocked look on his face. A blur hit him like a train and he hit a tree and groaned. Bella could hear the wolves grunting, which sounded like laughter.

Edward pulled himself up and Jasper shook his head. "Focus," He commanded. "Let's do it again."

Renesmee cuddled into Bella's chest, almost like she wanted to be a part of Bella. Bella chuckled and watched in amusement as Edward started to fight with Jasper. His eyes would occasionally graze over to Bella's eyes, and their eyes would lock. But then he would look away before Jasper could attack.

After 4 endless hours of training, Bella was getting bored. She had managed to keep Renesmee busy, by helping her invent a game of her own that involved pebbles and sticks. Renesmee managed to win each round, for she kept making new rules so Bella wouldn't win. Bella didn't mind. It was kind of cute.

A shadow blocked the sun from Bella's eyes, so she raised her head to see Edward holding out a hand. Renesmee took it and Edward lifted her off of Bella and then helped Bella up. He placed a kiss on her ear and then looked at Rosalie with a nod. Rosalie scooped Renesmee into her arms and then Emmett, Rosalie and Renesmee got into the Jeep.

"Where are they going?" Bella asked quietly.

"Home. We're staying here because Jasper has a plan to lure the newborns into the battlefield he chose."

Bella nodded her head in acknowledgement and then let out a gasp of breath. Edward had moved her behind him and she was holding on to him, her arms clinging around his neck and her legs around his waist. Bella buried her head into Edward's back, knowing what would come next. A gush of wind blew across Bella's arms, legs and neck as Edward ran. His hands lifted her legs up, as he rubbed his fingers on her thigh. Bella's cheeks were red, but she could feel the familiar tingling sensation as he touched her.

"You can open your eyes now, love," Edward said. Bella's eyes fell open as Edward gently placed her down. Bella placed a hand on her chest and slowly caught up with her breath. Her eyes then focused on where she was and her heart dropped.

They were in the exact field where she had almost died and became human. "It's not the same place, I swear," Edward reassured.

Bella bit her bottom lip and looked at the clearing. Rocks surrounded the area, and one huge boulder stood in the middle of the field.

Jasper and Jacob--in human form-- walked up to Bella and Edward. "Ready?" Jacob asked, his eyes flickering to Bella.

"What's going on?"

"Jacob is going to carry you around the clearing, for his scent will mix perfectly with yours," Edward elaborated. Bella frowned at looked at Edward as Jacob scooped her off of her feet, carrying her bridal style.

"Let's get this over with," She murmured.

"Aye aye, Captain," Jacob joked.

Bella rolled her eyes and Jacob jogged into the forest. Bella would squirm in his arms as he ran, trying not to make any eye contact. She didn't want it anymore awkward then it should be. Jacob seemed to agree with that. Jacob stopped running and Bella could feel the sweat trickling down his chest. Bella made a disgusted face, and leaned as far away from his chest he could get.

"Do you really love my daughter?" Bella asked.

"With all my heart," Jacob admitted. "I couldn't see a world without her. I would not want to live in a world without her."

Bella half smiled but then her face went stern. "You're not going to date her are you?"

"I will be anything for her," Jacob admitted bluntly. "A boyfriend, a brother."

"You're saving the boyfriend thing for later, right?"

Jacob smirked and Bella frowned and pinched his arm, making him drop Bella. Bella let out a gasp of breath as she hit the ground, but it was better than having to be in his arms. "Can we just walk?"

Jacob chuckled. "If you insist."

Jacob and Bella walked down a trail and Bella started talking about her life before Forks. Jacob was a good listener, and he engaged into the conversation. After about twenty minutes of talking he froze. Bella continued talking but Jacob looked at her.

"Stop talking," He scolded. "We're not alone."
