Chapter Five: Befriending Mortality

Edward gently placed Renesmee down, and she ran to Esme, welcoming Esme with a big hug. He smiled at his little girl, then walked up to Rosalie and Carlisle, who were trying to see what was wrong with Bella.

"She's completely blacked out," Rosalie said, looking up at Edward.

"We need to get her home, immediately," Carlisle stated as he scooped the lifeless Bella into his arms. Rosalie placed a hand on Edward's shoulder.

"I'll clean up Renesmee. You should be with your mate."

"Thank you Rosalie." Rosalie walked off to Renesmee and picked her up, making her way home with Alice and Jasper.

Edward followed Carlisle's scent to the house and walked through the door, and up the stairs to Carlisle's medical room. She was hooked up to a monitor and lying down on a hospital bed.

"Carlisle, Is she-" Edward could not bring himself to say that dreadful word. Is she dying?

"No son."

Edward nodded and placed his hand on Bella's. He instantly pulled it away, in shock. She was warm, and not cold like a vampire should be. Edward inhaled to smell the most delicious smell. it was the smell of Bella. He had never noticed how delicious she smelled. His thirst scratched and clawed at his throat, aching to get out and have just a little taste.

"Edward, I highly suggest that you leave the room," Carlisle said, placing himself between Edward and Bella. Edward nodded and quickly removed himself from the room.

"Daddy?" A voice called. Edward walked into the living room to see Renesmee sitting on the couch and Rosalie on the floor, bandaging up Renesmee's knee.

"I'm here, princess," he replied, as he sat himself down beside Renesmee. He wrapped his arm around his daughter's shoulders and pulled her close. The scent of Renesmee's blood still lingered in the air.

Edward had gotten used to the aroma of his daughter. It didn't bother him anymore. But when he smelled Bella, he had almost lost it. If Bella was going to remain in her state, he had to learn to control himself. He couldn't risk losing it and hurting her. Edward didn't even want to think about what would happen if he hurt Bella.

Edward winced and looked down at Renesmee, who was repeatedly tapping his cheek with the palm of her hand. She placed her warm on his cold cheek and images of Bella blacked out on the battlefield filled up Edward's head.

Is Momma alright? Renesmee thought, tilting her head.

"Your mother will be alright. She's resting," Edward assured.

I thought vampires don't sleep?

"They don't."

"Edward? Can I speak with you, please?" Carlisle called from his medical room. Edward stood up, kissed his daughter on the forehead and walked into the room. He was once again hit with Bella's powerful scent. "We need to discuss Bella."

"What about Bella?" Alice chirped interrupting Edward and Carlisle's conversation by walking into the room. Edward rolled his eyes and looked back at Carlisle, crossing his arms over his chest.

"Listen," Carlisle instructed.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

Alice went wide eyed and Edward looked down at his lover. "A heartbeat," Alice breathed.

"Impossible!" Edward argued. "Vampires don't have heartbeats!"

"What if she's not a vampire?" Alice countered. "What if she's-"

Edward interrupted Alice with a glare. He then inhaled, trying to calm down, and manage his focus from strangling the little pixie to Bella. "Is it possible?"

Carlisle sighed and placed his thumb on her pulse. He removed his thumb and nodded his head. "Yes son, I believe it's possible."

"How?" Alice wondered.

"It seems that the elixir that Bella consumed removed all the venom from her system, transforming her into a mortal."

Edward started to panic. "What about Renesmee? She consumed a drop of that liquid as well."

"Edward, calm down. Renesmee will be fine. The potion will just make Renesmee grow at a slower rate than before."

"What do we do now?" Alice inquired.

"Now we wait."

The pain that Bella was going through excruciating. She wanted to scream but she was unable to do so. Instead, she laid still.

Bella tried to remember what had happened. She had pushed Renesmee out of the way, and the strange liquid had went down her throat.

Just thinking about the liquid made Bella mentally gag. It was clumpy and it tasted like burned rotten eggs.

After the had consumed the elixir, she had gotten dizzy and blacked out. She couldn't remember anything after that. Had she been carried off the battle field? Had the Cullens fought against the Volturi?

A wave of pain washed of Bella, causing her to stop her train of thoughts. The pain that Bella was going through was the worst pain she had ever been through; it was a thousand times worse then the pain she had went through when she was changed. It felt as all of her bones were being cracked and that she was being stabbed in every area of her body. All she wanted was for the pain to stop.

Mumbles surrounded Bella, but she couldn't make out who was talking or what they were talking about. She wondered if Edward was there by her side. Maybe he was staring at her lifeless body with his golden eyes.

Something cold touched Bella's hand, making her mentally shiver. The cold thing grazed across her hand, and soon, a pair of frosty lips landed on her forehead. Edward.

Bella felt something different inside her. She didn't know how to explain what was different to herself, but Bella was positive that she was changing somehow. It felt like she was... alive.

Bella wondered what would have happened if she had never gotten in that car accident. She would have finished school and graduated, maybe even with a scholarship in her hands. She might have even gone to a nice college in Wisconsin. Maybe she would get married to a nice man who respected her and have beautiful children. Then in the end, she would sit on her deck, drinking lemonade, and watch her grandchildren run around in her backyard.

Sorrow overwhelmed Bella, making tears mentally fall down. All the things she wanted in life, would never happen. She would never be able to hold her first child in her arms, or grow old with the person she loved.

Bella remembered that she did have some things on her list that she had complete. She was raising a beautiful little girl, that Bella loved with all her heart. But by coming into Renesmee's life late, she would never get the opportunity to hold the small delicate baby in her arms, while the man she loved held them both. Then again, maybe one day she would marry Edward and go off to college. The future was a big blur to Bella. All she could focus on was the present and how she was going to survive.

A familiar darkness crowded her, but Bella was ready to fight and this time, she wouldn't give up. She would win. She used all her strength to push the darkness away from her and her family. She didn't want anything to do with the darkness. Bella grew weaker and weaker by the minute. This was the end. Down in her gut, Bella knew she wouldn't survive this. The darkness consumed her and Bella welcomed it with open arms.

Edward sat beside Bella, holding her hand in between his two hands.

It had been two days since Bella had blacked out. Alice presumed that in the next twenty-four hours she would awake and Edward wanted to make sure that he was the first thing that she saw when she woke up.

Seeing her in this state made Edward's dead heart ache. He wanted to hold Bella in his arms and caress her and tell her everything would be okay. Edward's eyes watched her every movement, from her chest slowly rising every few minutes to her hand flinching in his every hour.

Edward's eye landed back on Bella face, and the crooks of his mouth slowly expanded. Bella was the most beautiful person - inside and out - that Edward had ever met. He loved the way she bit her lip and the way she pushed her hair away from her face. Or when she tucked her face into his chest. He lifted his fingers and they stroked her narrow jawline. Edward had never been religious, but Edward knew he was blessed.

A small hand tapped Edward's forearm. Edward turned his head, releasing Bella's warm hand so he could pick up the little girl that stood before him. He placed Renesmee on his knee and regained his gentle grip on Bella's hand. Renesmee placed her hand over Edward's and sent a small smile towards him.

When will Momma wake up?

"Soon." Edward replied. "Very soon."

Edward looked at Renesmee and images of Bella and Renesmee playing in the snow clouded his mind. Edward chuckled at the memory. He studied every aspect of Renesmee's face and then looked at Bella. They both had quite similar features. It was strange how alike they were. Edward shook off the thought and let a new thought arrive.

"Renesmee?"

Yes?

"When your mother wakes up, she will be different."

How so? Renesmee thought, looking at her father.

"Well for starters, she won't be able to hunt with us anymore. She will have to eat human food. She will not be able to run as fast as we can. She will also be weaker than us, so we have to be extra careful with her."

Human food? Why would a vampire eat human food? Renesmee furrowed her eyebrows, when everything clicked. She let out an 'Oh' and nodded her head.

"Oh, and Renesmee?"

"Yes, Daddy?"

"You can't bite your mother after this. That could seriously hurt her, even though you aren't venomous."

Renesmee stuck out her bottom lip and Edward laughed. "Can I still bite Jake?"

"Of course," Edward said with a smile. "Have you checked up on Jacob, my little nurse?"

After being crushed by one of the Volturi members, Jacob had received 3 broken ribs and 4 fractured ribs. Werewolves heal quickly, but Carlisle sped up the process by injecting a small amount of his venom into Jacob. Edward still remembered the mutt howling in pain every night. Ever since Jacob had gotten hurt, Renesmee had been by his side, bringing him water, reading to him and just talking to him.

Renesmee shrugged. "He's getting better. Grandpa Carlisle says by tomorrow he should be fully healed."

A scream filled up Edward's ears and he looked down at Renesmee who was slightly frowning. "I'll be back." She said, crawling off of his lap and running downstairs to assist Jacob.

Alice entered the room and looked at Edward. "You're going to have to leave," She said, walking up to Bella.

"Why would I do that?"

"Because, Bella will be waking up in two hours and-"

"Alice, how did you know when she was going to wake up?"

Alice shrugged. "I had a vision. I guess her shield lost some of its power when she changed. Anyways, I have to get Bella ready."

Edward nodded and stood up. He placed Bella's hand on her abdomen and walked out of the room.

Alice grinned mischievously and rubbed her hands together like a cartoon villain. She picked up a brush and brushed Bella's curls. The curls recoiled and landed softly on her shoulders.

Alice gently unclothed Bella and pulled on a navy blue dress that reached Bella's mid-thighs. She lifted the resting Bella and zipped up the dress and placed Bella back down on the bed.

"Edward." Alice called. Edward rushed into the room with a worried expression on his face.

"Is she okay?" He asked.

"She's fine. She will be waking up in a few minutes, so I thought you would like to know."

"Thank you Alice. She looks beautiful, by the way." Alice winked and walked out of the room, leaving Edward and Bella to themselves. Edward stepped away from the stirring Bella and slide his hands into his pockets, staring out the window. He wanted to give her space, for she might be overwhelmed when she wakes up. Edward counted her breaths and counted down the minutes.

In an instant, the darkness left Bella.

She was ready.

Bella's eyes fluttered open.
