I don't want to be a Guardian Pt 1
Part 2 is coming soon, it will be the next thing posted, but I've gotta get ready for work so I don't have time to finish the whole thing.
the big four, and Jack, stand on the ice. the Burgess kids had left long ago and Pitch has been gone for at least an hour, when North brings up the elephant in the room.
"so, Jack, you are ready to be official Guardian now, yes?" North asks. the other three Guardians are smiling behind him, but Jack frowns. he looks almost confused.
"no, I already told you. thats not for me. I'm not a Guardian." Jack shrugs, watching them. the others stare at him confusedly.
"but Jack-" Tooth tries.
"are ya daft ya gumby?" Bunny scoffs. Jack huffs at him.
"Jack, we are not understanding, why?" North asks, watching him.
"why would I?" Jack counters. "I made it three hundred years alone, I don't need you guys." Jack huffs.
"we have wiped clean the slate, we told you this?" North asks, sounding even more confused.
"maybe you did, but that doesn't mean I have." Jack glares.
"what do you mean Jack?" Tooth asks, watching him. Jack scoffs.
"I'm glad you guys forgive harmless pranks, but I still have things I don't forgive." Jack frowns. Bunny huffs, rolling his eyes.
"oh yeah? like what? what have we done thats soooo bad?" Bunny mocks, arms crossed over his chest. Jack glares at him.
"should I start with you, jackass?" Jack scoffs. Bunny looks slightly shocked. "should I start with the blizzard? or the random insults? or how about you trying to punch me because Pitch tricked me? how about the time you broke my staff and left me to lay in agony in the summer heat because I just happened to stumble across you? I wasn't even doing anything, I was just walking around and you attacked me out of nowhere! it took me forever to get home, not that you cared!" Jack glares. Bunny looks away quickly, feeling slightly ashamed. "how about the time I fell into one of your tunnels and you were so angry you tried to kill me?" Jack snaps.
"Bunny!" North glares. Jack turns to the jolly Guardian.
"like you have room to be angry North." Jack glares. North blinks.
"huh?" he ask.
"threatening to take my head off if my ice caused your reindeer to slip again, the first time I ever met you." Jack glares. North frowns looking away. "the only one of you I met that wasn't an ass was Sandy! even Tooth got angry when I made it too cold for her fairies to fly, accidentally! it was my first year alive!" Jack glares. Tooth immediately looks ashamed about her previous actions.
"Jack, we-" Tooth tries again.
"what? you're sorry? too late, three hundred years too late!" Jack snaps. he turns away from them. "now get out of my home." Jack snaps. the four look utterly confused, glancing around.
"the lake...?" Tooth asks. Jack turns back, fire in his eyes.
"of course the lake! what is my home not good enough for you guys either!?" Jack shouts, glaring at them. "clearly I'm not, so it shouldn't be a surprise my home isn't either!" Jack adds.
"Jack, you have no real home?" North asks. the look on Jacks face sours immediately.
"whats the problem with my home North?" Jack snaps.
"home has walls, has roof. lake is not home, is pathetic excuse-" North starts. Jack lets out a scream of frustration, causing the bigger to go quiet. he slams his staff down onto the ice, hard, blowing them back and off the lake. they all go flying, landing hard on the land. Sandy sits up rubbing his head with a frown. the other three slowly manage to gather themselves and get to their feet.
"fuck off! its all I've had for three hundred years!! its all I fucking need!" Jack growls, quickly shooting out an ice barrier to keep the four off his lake. he knows it won't stop them, but it gets his point across.
"look mate, we get it yer mad, pissed off even, but Manny chose ya, and ya shouldn't-" Bunny tries.
"oh yeah Manny." Jack huffs, sarcastically. "the last time that jackass chose me for something it left me completely and utterly alone for 300 years!" Jack snaps.
"Jack-" Bunny tries again.
"I said, fuck off." Jack says firmly, glaring at them. when none of them budge, Jack flies off into the air as quickly as the wind can scoop him up, leaving them all confused.
"so.... thats it then?" Tooth asks softly.
"Manny does not take no for answer. we must go back to Pole, find out what Manny thinks we should do." North says.
"I say, leave the brat alone. he made his choice." Bunny scoffs.
"Bunny! that attitude towards him caused this mess!" Tooth glares.
"enough!" North glares when Bunny starts to argue. "we go back to Pole, we talk to Manny, we fix this, now." North says firmly. Bunny shakes his head.
"fuck that mate, I got a Warren t' clean up thanks t' that dero." Bunny glares, tapping the ground.
"Bunny we would not have beat Pitch without Jack. he messed up, but so did we." Tooth says.
"Tooth is right, we have one chance to fix what we have done." North says. Bunny glares at them, glancing down at his tunnel, before closing it.
"fine. one shot. if he's still actin' like a dill, I'm done." Bunny glares.
"Jack needs us." North glares.
"ye heard'im, he don' need us." Bunny glares.
"yes he does." Tooth glares. "Jack is a child. a child!" Tooth shouts. he face softens. "a child we failed, for 300 years. its no wonder he doesn't actually trust us." Tooth sighs.
"come we must get to work." North says, heading for the sleigh.
Jack screams again, louder, in frustration. he has no one but the wind to talk to, but that doesn't stop him.
"what we save the fucking world together and now we're all supposed to be buddy buddy?" Jack growls. the wind brushes gently through his hair, almost a caress.
its alright.
"then they have the nerve to insult my home, the only home I remembered for 300 years!" Jack hisses. the wind blows, almost a whisper in his ear.
they didn't mean it like that. they were just surprised.
"whose side are you on wind?" Jack glares. the wind ruffles his clothing.
maybe you should give it a chance.
"what being a Guardian? there's a reason they're the big four and I'm just Jack Frost. no one even knew who I was until the world almost forgot Bunny." Jack snaps. "no one needs Jack Frost wind." Jack adds quietly. he shifts in his tree, the wind blows the leaves around.
you can't just hide here.
"watch me." Jack growls. the wind picks up, nearly knocking him out of the tree. "stop! hey!" Jack shouts, hanging onto the tree. the wind slows, brushing past him again.
why not give it a chance?
"you don't get it do you wind?" Jack asks, softly. she brushes past him again.
I don't understand.
Jack sighs.
"three days doesn't fix everything they've done. I get it. I did some bad things too, but I never meant to hurt anyone. I didn't do or say things to them that were meant to hurt them the way they did me." Jack says, shaking his head. "I'm just a kid wind. a kid who died in a frozen lake. everything special about me came from the Man in the Moon and not even he will talk to me... I just wanted to save my sister. I was content to die saving her. I didn't ask for any of this." Jack says. the wind brushes past him again.
I'm happy you're here. I was lonely before. now I have you.
Jack nods slightly.
"yeah. I know. you kept me sane all these years. the only one who could see me." Jack murmurs, smiling slightly. she brushes through his hair gently.
give them a chance?
"I'm not ready to." Jack says. "they didn't do anything to deserve a chance yet, wind. great we saved the world, or something, but like... they hated having me there the whole time. I fucked up with Pitch and I fucked up with Bunny and North looked at me like he hated that I was in his shop and Tooth... she looked so disappointed when I let Pitch trick me." Jack sighs.
you're a kid. being tricked is part of it.
"yeah well, tell that to Bunny. I absolutely ruined Easter because I wanted to know who was calling for me." Jack sighs, hugging his knees. "and did you see their faces when I said that was my home? is it really that bad?" Jack asks softly.
no. your lake is beautiful. don't worry.
"no its not." Jack mutters. "are they still there?" Jack ask.
they left after us.
"then lets go home wind." Jack mumbles. he lets her scoop him up and carry him off.
she gently drops him on his feet. Jack refreezes the lake as he walks over it to the tiny cave hidden along the rock wall behind his lake.
"thanks wind." Jack murmurs, curling up in the nest of stolen threadbare blankets and sheets he'd gathered over the years. he pulls one of the ragged blankets over him and curls up. he doesn't own much and most of it is stolen. he yawns, its been an exhausting day.
the big four sit in a circle in Norths workshop.
"so, Manny was no help. now what?" Tooth asks, looking at North.
"Manny said fix what we did. so we find way to fix." North shrugs.
"look mate, Frost ain' gonna join us, probably even if we need'im again. kid probably don' even wanna see us again. how are we supposed t' fix this?" Bunny asks, looking over.
"first, I say, we try and get Jack back here. hope to get him for dinner and apologise to him." North says.
"North, he don' wanna be a Guardian. he don' wanna be one of us." Bunny frowns.
"we change his mind. make him understand we care." North assures.
"but do we really?" Bunny asks.
"Bunny!" Tooth glares.
"now, hear me out Shelia." Bunny says gently. "if Manny hadn' picked'im t' be a Guardian, would we even be talkin' t'im? no. we wouldn'. but suddenly he's a Guardian and now we're supposed t' be chummy?" Bunny frowns.
"Bunny has point." North says.
"thank you-" Bunny starts.
"Jack has been lonely long time. friends must be abnormal for him." North says.
"that is not at all what I said mate." Bunny frowns.
"we go see Jack. invite him to pole, make things right." North says.
"he's not gonna just let us toss him into another portal." Tooth says.
"no kidnap. we chat." North assures.
"m'not gettin' in that sleigh." Bunny says, tapping a tunnel and jumping into it quickly.
"fine." North shrugs.
they arrive at Jacks lake nearly the same time.
"how are we supposed to know if he's here?" Tooth frowns. Bunny flinches at the cold wind when it slams against him. Sandy waves his arms at them.
"well, theres a clue." Bunny mutters. he can't talk with the wind the way Jack can, but anyone can speak to the wind. "she's angry." Bunny frowns, lifting his arm. wind slams against his side, nearly making him stumble.
"who?" North asks.
"wind. she's angry." Bunny frowns. "she doesn't want us botherin' the lad." Bunny adds, carefully stepping onto the ice. it creaks under his weight. Sandy huffs silently, waving again to try and get their attentions.
"Bunny don't fall in." Tooth says.
"I won'." Bunny assures. he frowns looking around. "alright ya win. we weren' very nice t' yer friend. we're tryin' t' play nice now. c'mon wind. cooperate a little." Bunny says. the wind slams against him, throwing him back. "hey!" Bunny growls, landing on his ass.
"Bunny, wind is dangerous thing. do not make her angrier than she already is." North frowns. wind slams against North. the sound it she makes, seems as though she's growling at the implied intruders.
