Chapter 5
[Update: The layout of the story is changing a bit. This should make it easier to read :) Enjoy!]
Lyra
I feel anger in the pit of my stomach. I force it down. I could tell what Morgan was trying to do, make us look like we're not a threat. My vision flickers black and white as Morgan pushes past me, back down the stairs. She goes slowly, one at a time.
I breathe out a sigh and stay silent as I follow closely behind her. Loud footsteps are heard behind me, telling me the Kree Soldiers were following us as well.
I edged every so slightly closer to Morgan. "What are you doing?" I whisper as quietly as I dared.
"I... I'm not sure yet," Morgan whispers back, shaking her head slightly.
We make our way to the glass door and I walk through, biting my lip. I look around, and to my surprise, it looks just like when we first got here: a normal lab full of machines.
"Hmmm..." A man behind us walks past us and examines the machines. "Where did you get this?" he asks.
"I-It was my dad's," Morgan stutters.
The Kree soldier was quiet for a moment and glanced at Morgan's armor stand. His eyes widened and he walked closer, his footsteps clinking against the wooden floorboards.
"P-Please don't touch that!" Morgan yells immediately, running in front of the soldier to block him from the armor stand. He glares at Morgan, making my vision flicker again.
I breathe out, once again pushing the anger away.
"Hey, what are you doing? You could get hurt." I try to play along, fearful of what could happen to Morgan.
She glanced at me with pleading eyes before looking back at the man in blue armor.
"Please! It's the last thing my dad gave me... before... he died." Morgan's eyes became watery. She takes a deep breath, somehow managing to keep a stern face.
The soldier pauses. "Fine." He says in a cold tone. He looks up at the armor stand once more before backing away to examine boxes stacked in the far corner of the lab.
I quickly jump to Morgan's side and wrap an arm around her shoulders. "You okay?" I whisper.
She gives me a tight hug. "Yes, a lot better now that I saved dad's Mark 58," she whispers back. "I hope your dad is safe," she adds, even quieter.
"Me too...," I agree.
"Alright. I see nothing so far..." the Kree Soldier concludes. "You're not going anywhere, though."
I scowl. For a moment, I thought we were going to get out of the situation without a fight. I bite my lip, flustered.
"Please, just don't hurt our friends," I plead, not meeting the man's glaring eyes.
Morgan then gasps and releases our hug. "My mom!" she shouts. "I completely forgot! Where is she?!"
I gasp as well. A small headache forms. Every second I just get more frustrated over the stupid soldiers. Did the Kree really take Morgan's mom?
Angel
I feel something cold against my bare wrists. I try to sit up but I feel something freezing cold against my neck. My eyes snap open. I was in a dimmed room. I heard sounds of large engines and what I was laying on was slightly vibrating. When I try to look around, my head throbs in pain.
What the heck? I think. I couldn't move my legs either.
"Hello!!" I call out. My throat burns immediately and I start coughing. It was like having a cold. I groaned, trying to remember what happened.
I remember getting punched in the face by Gabe, going up to the kitchen to get an ice pack, then everything went black. I blinked. Why did everything go black?
I look to the side, spotting a shiny metal base. It was probably what I was laying on. I'm also binded to the base by metal clamps. Great.
I sigh in annoyance. Whoever bound me down was smart. I was not only pinned down, but I couldn't do any spells in this position.
"Hello!" I called again, my throat burning once more.
I whimper. Was no one around to hear me?
"I need some water..." I say to the darkness quietly, my voice hoarse. "Please?" My throat hurts so bad at the moment. I closed my eyes and tried to relax.
Then, I hear a rattle of something against a cup. I open one eye to see a cup of iced water floating above my head.
"AH!" I yelp and the cup tips down, the water dumping all over my face. I feel chills down my spine as I hear a deep laugh. One I don't recognize.
"Haha! I got you good, didn't I?" the boy asks. I look around the best I can. I saw nothing but wet strings of my hair in the face and the walls of the room I was in.
"Who are you?" I ask, groaning as my throat burns.
"The better question is, where am I?" The boy's face appears in front of mine and I can't help but cry out in surprise.
"What the heck!" I look away, coughing once more from the searing pain in my throat.
"Man. You really need water, don't you? My bad." I look over at the boy. Through my wet strands of hair, I see dark ginger hair, dull green eyes, tanned skin, and a black outfit. It had teal accents that lined the edges of the outfit.
"I'm Novak Maximoff. You are?" He makes another cup of water appear out of thin air. I almost jerk back in surprise.
"How?" I manage out of amazement.
"I asked a question first." He had a slight accent.
"Angel." I say quickly. "Angel Strange."
Novak tilts his head at me, holding the water cup in his hand.
"You mean like Dr. Strange, Keeper of the Time Stone?"
"You know my dad? Do you know if he's okay? Is he here?" I look around wildly.
"Calm down." Novak comes closer and carefully pours the water into my mouth.
"That's a lot better, thank you," I say after a few gulps.
"Of course." He shrugs. "Also, yes, I know your dad. He's one of the prisoners I'm in charge of." I give Novak a glare. "Don't worry!" he presses, putting his hands up. He lets go of the water cup and it floats in the air on it's own. I bite my lip, a bit freaked out.
"Your dad's in good hands. I owe him my life for saving my dad." Novak smiles sweetly.
"Your dad?" I question.
"Heh, yeah. I'm the son of Scarlet Witch and Vision. I'm sure you've heard of them." Novak grabs the water cup again. "Although my mom died when I was young." He shrugs.
"Oh... my parents put me up for adoption," I share quietly. Novak looks up at me in surprise.
"What?! That's terrible!"
"No, it's fine!" I smile weakly and shake my head. "I was adopted at a young age and forgot about my real parents. That is until I found the Time Stone and everything... fell into place." This time I shrug.
Now, Novak is floating in the air, criss cross. His shoes are dark brown boots. I eye him weirdly.
"Wish it was better for me." He sighs.
"What happened?" I ask. Before he could answer, a door creaked open and a large figure I couldn't quite see stepped through.
"Novak. It's lunch time. Release the prisoners one by one," orders a deep, cold voice.
"Yes, sir," he responds with a nod. He lands back on the ground with a light thump. "Here." Novak snaps, and the metal restraints keeping me down disappear.
I carefully stand up, slowly stretching and waking up my limbs. My legs and arms had become numb from staying in one position.
"Thanks, but what's going on?" I roll my neck back and hop off the metal plate. I blink in surprise when I find myself standing next to Novak. He's a head and a half taller than me.
"No time to explain. Follow Mr. Grumpy over there and I'll see you at lunch." He winks with a smile and floats into the air, up through the ceiling. I can't help but gasp. He can float through walls too?
"Ugghhh." The large figure from behind me groans. I look behind me and jump back when I see a large gray rock-covered alien standing at the doorway of the room. "You can call me Mr. G," the figure says.
"Does it stand for Grumpy?" I manage a small laugh.
Mr. G glares at me. "Follow me before I smash your body into pieces." He makes a fist. I flinch and cower away.
"Y-Yes, sir...," I stutter.
Mr. G smiles. I wasn't too sure if it was a good sign or not. "Good. Come." He walks out of the room, his footsteps sounding more like stomping. I hesitantly follow. Maybe I could see my dad.
Damian
I groan as a guard in gray armor and helmet pushes me forward.
"Hurry up. It's lunch time." I feel a gun being pressed against my back. I grit my teeth as he presses the gun harder to my spine.
"When I'm free you'll be the first person I go after!" I threaten with a growl.
"Keep talking, kid," the guard responds.
I roll my eyes and look down at my hands. Both of my fists were surrounded by dark metal cylinders. They were connected together with a thick bar in the center. A long chain hung from it and connected below to restraints on my ankles. I could barely walk correctly and I couldn't move my hands unless I was sitting down.
"Ughhhh." I groan again. "I can barely walk!" I yell to the guard.
"You were put in the Hostile sector. We do this to make sure you don't hurt anyone on board."
I glare at the guard. "Why are we even on this stupid space ship?" I roll my eyes. "And I'm not that hosti– OW!" The guard hits me in the back of my head. I fall forward onto the ground from the impact. "Owwww. What the hell!" I turn my head to the guard.
"Shut up!" He pulls me back up to my feet. My head pulses with pain. It was already bruised, so now it hurts even more than before.
After I was knocked out at Morgan's, I was brought to the spaceship half-conscious. Last thing I remember is being laid down in a glass container and something putting me to sleep. When I woke up, I was in a large glass box with restraints on my ankles and wrists.
"Fine." I roll my eyes, trying my best not to wince from the pain.
We go down a long hallway and turn into a massive room full of beings that look nothing like me. "Woah...," I manage.
"Move it!" the guard orders. I growl as I move forward. The room looks like a larger version of the cafeteria at school. There were rows of lunch tables, each one full of different creatures. Some had chokers around their necks while others were moving around freely. Whispers could be heard everywhere. I even heard some laughter.
"Damian?" I hear a familiar voice. I look to the side and see Angel getting up from her spot at a far table. She swerves through the many tables and comes to my side. "Excuse me?" She examines me with a surprised face, then looks up at the guard behind me. "Sir, umm, ma'am?" I can hear her voice trembling.
"What is it, kid?" my guard asks.
"This is my friend you have here. May he please come and sit with me for lunch?" Angel grabs onto my arm.
"I'm sorry, kid. This boy is dangerous–"
Angel bursts out laughing, interrupting the guard. "Dangerous? Ha, he wouldn't be able to touch me." She snickers, crossing her arms.
I gape at her. "Excuse you–" I start, but the guard jabs his gun into my back again.
"Do not speak." I bite my lip. "Fine. I will allow him to stay with you. If he is that weak, please keep an eye on him."
"Seriously?" I start to reject.
"I said silence, boy." The guard hits me in the back of the head this time, but not as hard.
I grit my teeth and glare at Angel, who laughs nervously.
"I will allow no restraints at lunch time. You will wear this collar, though. If you mess around, hurt a fellow prisoner, or attempt escape"–a thick metal choker clamps around my neck–"there will be consequences," he finishes with a threatening tone. The guard rummages through his pocket and pulls out a small black box with a red button on it.
He clicks the button, and I hear pistons release. My restraints fall to the ground. I shake my hands in relief. Some of my fingers had fallen asleep, but now they were free.
"Thank you! Come, Damian." Angel immediately grabs my arm and pulls me back to her table.
"Hey! I wanted to punch that guy in the skull!" I groan. "Also, how could you throw me under the bus like that? You don't know how much that hurt my ego." I roll my eyes.
Angel laughs and we sit down in two open seats.
"Damian, this is my new friend Novak. Novak, this is my best friend Damian!" Angel announces.
"Hey." I look up to see a boy with dark ginger hair.
"Hey...," I reply.
"You were classified as 'Hostile'?" Novak tilts his head at me.
I sigh. "I guess...?"
"Hm. I guess that makes sense. You are a Parker, after all." He shrugs.
"How do you know my last name?" I give him a curious look.
"Angel told me you were the son of Spiderman. Was she wrong?"
"No." I roll my eyes and glance at Angel.
"Sorry," Angel laughs nervously. "Novak's just like us, though. He's the son of Scarlet Witch and Vision!" She smiles brightly.
I gasp. "No way! Prove it," I say excitedly.
Novak laughs. Then, to my surprise, he starts floating in the air. I blink as Angel squeals beside me.
"Isn't it amazing?! He can float through walls too!" She grabs my arm and shakes it violently.
"That is amazing..." I can't help but feel jealous of him. While I'm stuck being a spider, he gets to fly and travel through walls. I mentally sigh. Being in this ship might be harder than I thought.
Morgan
"What do you mean you already brought our friends to your stupid ship?!" I yell to a Kree Soldier.
"We brought them there half an hour ago!" the soldier in teal armor yells back.
"I thought I was clear when I said you weren't to hurt my friends!" I reach up and backhand him across the face as hard as I can. I'm too mad to control myself.
"Morgan!" Lyra pulls me back right as I'm about to lunge onto the soldier.
"Look, kid. I'm only being patient with you because it's my job. It's not like I want to be here with you." He glares at me.
"You're just mean!" I respond with a huff. Lyra pulls me back even further.
"Morgan, keep your cool. I'm having a hard time doing that as well...," Lyra whispers in my ear. I turn my head to see parts of her face tint green, then go back to her normal olive skin tone.
It seems Lyra is handling the situation better than I was. I take a deep breath and look around.
There's one Kree guard in front of us and two by the glass door, leaving our only way out of the lab blocked. The Kree haven't touched Mark-58 yet, but it wasn't complete. Plus, I don't know what type of metal is used for Kree armor or if a repulse blast can penetrate it.
I contemplate asking Jarvis, then decide against it. The Kree Soldiers would know I'm up to something. There isn't any other option I can think of.
I bite my lip. What have I gotten myself into? My parents and my friends were taken away to an alien spaceship, and I'm trapped in a room with Lyra with no way to get us out.
I pause in thought. Lyra.
"Lyra," I whisper. "Get mad."
"What?!" Lyra hisses back.
"Just trust me. Do it!" I reply as thoughts flash through my head, forming a half- developed plan. "Go with it." I put on a mean face and pull away from Lyra.
"Hey." I look the Kree soldier in the eye.
"What is it now?" He rolls his eyes, glaring at me.
"I... challenge you–" I cut myself off. Wrong move, wrong move. Panic runs through me.
"Yeah!" Lyra says right after. I look over my shoulder, catching her look that reads What else do you want me to do?
I bite my lip and face the Kree soldier. "We challenge all of you, actually," I amend myself, "to a fight!" I finish, raising a fist.
All the Kree Soldiers in the room pause before laughing mockingly. "I'd like to see you try and defeat at least one of us," one of them taunts.
"Fine." I smirk. "Ready, Lyra?" I look over my shoulder to see Lyra's face slowly transitioning to green.
"Of course!" She smiles and maneuvers around me with near-impossible grace, jumping and punching one of the Kree soldiers in the face with a green Hulk hand. The soldier jerks back in surprise.
"Hey! What are you kids trying to do here?!" another guards yells
from across the room.
"SMASH!" I hear Lyra yell as she pounces onto the Kree man. He yells as she continuously punches him in the face.
"Jarvis, I need the Mark-58 suit on me now," I order quickly as the other guards rush to our side of the room.
"But, sir," Jarvis responds immediately.
"I know it isn't finished! Just do as much as you can!" I shout.
As soon I finish my sentence, I hear a beeping noise and pieces of dad's Mark-58 armor attach onto me. Pieces of the armor attach to my arm and I raise my hand, pointing my palm at the guards.
By then, my arm is fully encased in the armor.
I push my hand outward as the leg armor clings to me and wraps around my legs.
The Kree guards stagger back, blasters in hand.
When nothing happens, they give me a confused look. I push my palm outwards again. Once again, nothing happens.
"God dammit–" I manage as the Kree Soldiers aim their blasters at me.
Cooper
"Why?" I complain to my guard.
"Wha' do ya want?!" the man asks, his Kree accent thick. I would laugh at how heavy he makes his A's if it wasn't so frustrating to understand his sad attempt at English.
I groan. "I cannot understand anything you're saying." I roll my eyes at the tiny man I'm following. From what I can understand, he's bringing me to lunch. Hopefully I can find someone from the group there.
"Sorry, lad! Dis is meh fo'st guarding job on dis ship! Meh trying me best!"
"What?" I respond blankly. If this ship doesn't kill me somehow, this tiny man poor English will.
Everything is quiet for a moment as he brings me to the cafeteria. At least, it looks like a cafeteria at first glance.
There are monsters everywhere. I mean, everywhere. The tables are crowded, there were groups along the walls, and when I looked to the ceiling, some monsters had giant bat wings and were hanging upside down.
"Dang." I can't help but look around at all the odd shapes and colors around me.
"Coop! Is that you?" I hear someone call out. I look around to see Damian waving his hand as high as possible above the large crowd. "Cooper! Over here!" he yells.
"Thanks for guiding me," I tell my small guard.
"No prob'em! Good day, lad!" He cheers then runs out of the cafeteria on his small legs.
"Hey, I understood that last part." I shrug and squeeze through the crowd to get to Damian. I sit down next to him at his table, and to my surprise, I see Angel on the other side of him.
"Oh, hey, Angel!" I wave with a smile.
"Cooper! Didn't think you'd be here." Angel smiles back.
"Yeah, me neither. Last thing I remember is being knocked out and waking up with a tiny guy saying saying like 'I is you guard now'!" I lower my tone to mimic the short guard.
I hear a laugh and look across the table.
"So, you're the one who got Shmebulock," a boy says. He has dark ginger hair and dull green eyes. I give him a weird look.
"What?" I tilt my head in confusion.
"Shmebulock is our smallest and weakest worker on the ship, but his dream is to be the strongest guard for prisoners."
"How do you know that?" I ask.
"Oh, Cooper," Angel cuts in, "this is Novak! He practically lives on the ship."
"Oh. Nice to meet you." I shoot a glance at the stranger.
"Yeah, I'm Angel's guard. Nice to meet you, Cooper." Novak smiles.
"You too...," I reply hesitantly. I don't know why, but I don't feel too good about this guy. "So," I try to change the subject, "what else is there to Shmebulock and why was he assigned to me?" I question.
Novak snickers. "That's pretty obvious."
Almost immediately, Damian bursts out laughing. "He just called you super weak!" He said with another laugh. Angel joins in and starts laughing hysterically.
"What?! You can't be serious!" I gape at them, making sure they know I'm obviously offended.
Novak laughs and nods. "Sorry, man. Just how it is."
I roll my eyes. That's when I notice Damian has a metal choker around his neck.
"What the hell?" I tap the choker and. It clinks against my nail.
"Don't touch that!" Damian stops laughing immediately and slaps my hand away. "Don't ask. Just be lucky you don't have to wear it."
I huff and cross my arms. I already hate this place.
Origin
I see a bright light in my eyes, then the sound of air pressure being released. I slowly open my eyes. A blurry figure is looking down at me, so I close my eyes once more.
"Origin," I hear a whisper. I don't think much of it until I hear the all-familiar sound of Kree blasters firing.
I shoot up, my heart racing. I open my eyes, only to be blinded by the light of the room.
"AHH! LOOK I'M SO SORRY!" someone yells. Was that Morgan?
"Psst. Origin! It's Mr. Banner. Thank goodness you're awake." I hear more blasters and yells.
"Mr. Banner. I remember you. Where am I?" I rub my eyes and open them slightly, letting them adjust.
"YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU DESERVE!" I hear another voice and wince as the sound of a crash pounds in my ears.
Mr. Banner sighs. "My daughter is too much sometimes." He shakes his head disapprovingly.
"Lyra, be careful! Don't break my dad's equipment!" Morgan groans. "Why won't this thing work?!"
Finally, I open my eyes and look around. There's no one but Mr. Banner and me. I blink in confusion.
"Where is everyone?" I ask quietly.
"On the other side of the wall," Mr. Banner replies quickly. "We're hidden right now, but the Kree have taken over the house." He offers me his hand. I hesitate in fear. The Kree Empire found everyone already?
"Please, Origin, you must help us."
I look him in the eye. "I... I don't know if I can..." I pause. "Mr. Banner, I'm scared," I mumble.
"Please. I think you're the only one left to help them right now."
"What about you?"
"I'm here too, but I can't take them on on my own."
I pause and take his hand. Mr. Banner helps me down from where I'm lying. Then I realize I don't feel any pain anymore.
"What did you guys do to me?" I look down at myself. I see almost no bruises and the smallest of cuts down my body.
"A little healing trick to help you get back on your feet." Mr. Banner smiles.
I smile back gratefully as there's another crash and a yell.
"We need to help them," I conclude quickly.
"I have an idea. First, though, you need to get in there and fight, keep them away from me. When I give you a signal, get everyone out of here." Lyra's dad presses his glasses closer to his face and gives me a grin of determination.
"Alright. Let's do this." I nod and face the wall blocking us from the Kree soldiers.
"Jarvis, open the wall." Mr. Banner looks up to the ceiling.
"Are you sure, Mr. Banner? My sensors pick up danger–" Jarvis starts to reject, but he's interrupted by a loud bang against the metal wall. Everything is quiet for a second. My eyes grow wide with fear and anger. I hear a gasp.
"Lyra!" Morgan's trembling voice cuts through the silence.
"Jarvis!" Mr. Banner yells.
"Yes, of course," Jarvis replies, the metal wall lifting up into the ceiling. When I look down, Lyra's eyes fall to my feet, her skin fading from dark green to her natural olive tone. I gasp as anger races through my veins. I look up as the Kree soldiers gasp as well.
"It's her," one of them says.
"The one with the power stone," another replies right after.
The third one just glares at me.
"Yeah. And you're gonna have to take it from my dead body!" I yell, feeling sparks snap at the tips of my fingers. With a raise of my hand, I blast a bolt of lightning at one of the soldiers, sending him flying into the air.
"Woah!" Morgan shouts as I shoot another lightning bolt at the other soldier. The second one flys into a wall, a very visible dent embedded into the steel.
I raise my hand at the third one, sending another shot of electricity. He's quick and moves to the side, my attack barely missing him.
I aim my palm at him again, about to strike when suddenly I feel the wind knocked out of me and I fall to my knees. My breaths come out in short gasps, all of my energy gone in mere seconds.
"Change of plan, Origin! Get Lyra out, NOW!" Mr. Banner orders. "Morgan and I will hold them off!"
I look up to see one of the men in blue armor already back on his feet.
"Ahh!" Morgan pounces onto his back, wrapping her arms around the soldier's neck.
"Origin! What are you waiting for?!" Mr. Banner puts a hand on my shoulder. I turn my head and see him turning green, growing bigger.
I huff and pick up Lyra bridal style, one hand under her legs and the other around her back. Using the last bit of energy I have in me, I stand and run to the exit. Right before I reach the glass door, teal armor flashes in front of me. Time seems to slow down as I skid to a stop, the soldier's arm racing to meet my face. I lean back, his fist barely skimming my nose.
Time speeds up once more as Hulk runs into the soldier, knocking him out of the way. I stagger back, managing to keep my balance.
I race through the glass door, up the steep flight of stairs, and out the entrance of Morgan's home, only to stop abruptly. I gasp, looking up to sky. A giant dark blue and purple space ship casts a shadow below it, a strong breeze blowing a nearby tree to the side. My hair flies behind me in a golden-blonde tangle.
Click.
I hear the all-familiar sound of guns reloading. I look to either side of me to see six men in teal armor surrounding Lyra and me.
My eyes go wide.
This can't be good, I think with a gulp.
5 minutes earlier...
Lyra
My whole life flashes before my eyes as a Kree soldier picks me up and tosses me into a metal wall with such ease, I might as well be a small pebble. My whole body shakes with pain, I hear almost nothing.
"Lyra!" a muffled shout. I recognize the voice. I can't quite remember for some reason. Wait, what even happened? I float in and out of consciousness.
I hear pistons release then a voice and a loud electrical blast. I force my eyes slightly open and see clumps of hair in my face, bright blue light flashes above me and I slightly turn my head to see what it is.
I see a girl with blonde hair and a few pieces of grey armor along her body.
When Iook to her face, my eyes go wide. What was wrong with her eyes? They're bright blue, electric light pouring out of them like flashlights. I don't remember ever seeing them before. My vision goes gray for a moment, a massive headache enveloping my whole head.
My whole body feels tired and I can't help but collapse to the ground, my eyes burning. I slowly close them, my head pulsing with pain.
A few moments later, I feel someone picking me up, cradling me like a baby in their arms. I feel my body panic from the pain along my spine and everything fades to black. I have no idea what happened, but I can tell I'm out cold.
???
"He will be... perfect," someone says with a slithery voice. The room is almost pitched black, a large tube full of glowing green liquid in the center of the room. A body was in it, floating in the center. Little air bubbles raised from his mouth every few seconds.
"When will Novak be here?" I ask. "We'll need him for the experiments." I raise a hand to the glowing tube, my scaled hand almost pressing against the glass. I pull away, scared to damage the tube.
Someone else in the room sighs. "We must not let anyone find out about this, understood?"
"Yes, sir," many voices echo, including mine, answering the voice.
I look up to the boy in the glass container. His dirty blond hair floats in the liquid, creases in his shirt from his muscles growing from chemicals, his clothes, slowly disintegrating from the acid mixed into the liquid.
This boy is the reason I'm still alive, I think. I must do whatever I can to make sure he stays put.
