Chapter 4
[This Story Changes Character Views]
Angel
"And that's how we ended up here," I finish with an embarrassed laugh. The machines in front of us are hard at work heating and shaping a large piece of metal.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, let me get this straight. You, are a wizard," she points to me. "You, mister, are a Spiderman," she points to Damian. "You two are useless to us right now," she motions to Gabriel and Cooper.
"Hey!" Cooper rejects, clearly offended. Gabriel just smirks.
"You two are Hulks." She points to Mr. Banner and Lyra, completely ignoring Cooper's remark. "And you are a goddess who almost got your immortal ass kicked," Morgan finishes, gesturing to Origin.
"Pretty much." Damian answers as he rolls his eyes.
"No! Gabe and I are not useless!" Cooper tries. We all let out a small laugh–except Cooper and Gabriel of course.
"Let them believe what they want." Gabriel rolls his eyes.
"Sir," Jarvis interrupts.
"Excuse me, but why does Jarvis call you sir?" I ask quickly.
"Because I want him to." Morgan eyes me. "What's up, Jarvis?" Morgan asks, turning around. We all look to see the mechanical arms but one go limp and slide back into the ceiling where they came from.
"I have completed the chest plate for you." The one arm grabs onto the mostly red-and-gray metal and brings it over to us. It has a hole in the center and is polished to a smooth, shiny surface.
"Good." Morgan takes it. The arm goes limps and gets dragged backwards an inch.
"What is that for?" Lyra asks.
"It's to complete my dad's Mark-58 suit. It got destroyed when..." She pauses and gives us a sorrowful look. Poor thing..., I think, biting my lip. She's talking about when her dad died.
"So Jarvis was given to you?" Mr. Banner asks quickly, changing the subject.
"Oh, um, I guess...?" Morgan shrugs. "Mom didn't really have anything to do with Jarvis so..." She shrugs.
"Well, does Jarvis know how to heal?" Lyra asks. "We kind of have a friend who's hurt." She nods to Origin. She was sitting on another box, her head against the wall. Her eyes were closed and she was breathing slowly.
"I believe so." Morgan tightens her grip on the slab of metal. "Jarvis."
"Yes, sir," the AI answers.
"Did Dad ever use you to heal others?"
"Yes, he did. Would you like me show you?"
"Yes." Morgan steps forward. We all jump when a large blue hologram pops up in front of her.
"What in the world?" Cooper gapes.
"Sorry." Morgan holds one hand out to the hologram and taps the large box it was showing. "What is this?" she asks.
"Mr. Stark called it a 'cradle.'" Jarvis replies. "It's a machine that generates tissue and heals wounds."
"Sounds high tech." I shrug.
"I can use it on your friend if I must." Jarvis continues. Morgan sighs.
"Fine. Yes, that'll be good." she says. The hologram grows smaller and disappears.
We hear pistons release and look around. The back wall had opened up to a secret room. In it was the same box shown on the hologram. It was white and silver with blue markings on it.
"Jarvis, why hadn't I known about this before?" Morgan jogs over to the secret room. We all follow while Mr. Banner stays with Origin.
"You never asked." Jarvis remarks.
"Whatever. Come on guys, we have some work to do!" she orders.
Lyra
"And you're positive she's gonna be okay?" I ask Morgan again. I glance over my shoulder at the goddess. Origin was incased with steel and metal. Glass let you look at her face.
"Yes. Lyra stop worrying. It's not gonna get you anywhere." I look back at Morgan. She rolls her eyes.
"Yeah...sorry." I try and relax.
"I have analyzed the goddess," Jarvis says a few moments later.
"What are we dealing with?" Morgan asks.
"Severe damage to her left leg and hip. Torn muscle from her shoulder as well as multiple bruises along her body."
Morgan's expression turns into shock.
"Is that... bad?" I question.
"Really bad." Morgan gives me a sorrowful look. "How much time do you think it'll take?"
There's a pause. "I have not been able to determine the time yet, sir."
"Why do you rely on this thing so much?" Gabriel interrupts us. He was leaning against the containment Origin was in.
"Gabriel, try not to be rude," Mr. Banner growls. Gabe rolls his eyes.
"If you want to try to be Mr. Helpful, get away from Origin," Angel jumps into the conversation. She crosses her arms.
"Don't tell me what to do," Gabriel sneers.
"Stop arguing guys," Morgan cuts in.
"Hey, you don't know what you could do to ruin this machine," Angel growls back.
"Says you," Gabe snaps.
"Guys–" Morgan tries again.
"Hey, break it up!" Damian steps in between them as Gabriel steps closer to Angel.
"Jerk," Angel mumbles.
"Wanna speak up?" Gabriel jerks his head to her.
"Guys!" I yell.
"Gabriel, Angel, stop." Dad grabs Gabe's shoulder. He jerks away.
"Don't touch me," he snaps.
"I said you were a jerk!" Angel repeats. "You're mean, and I don't understand what your friends see in you!"
"Hey!" Cooper comes in now.
"Guys!" Morgan yells louder as everyone starts arguing. I look back and forth between everyone in panic. Someone might get hurt, I think. What do I do? I pause in shock when Gabriel pushes past Damian and punches Angel near her eye, making her stagger backwards. Everyone is silent as we hear a cry from her.
"What did you do?!" I yell in anger. "That's not at all what you do to people!"
My vision flickers black and white. "Lyra. Calm down." Dad rushes to my side, pulling me into him. "Not now, calm down." I look down to see my hands tinted light green. I was quiet.
I took a deep breath and stuffed my face into Dad's jacket.
"Sorry...," I whisper after a moment.
"Are you good now?" he asks. I take another deep breath.
"Y-Yeah," I stutter.
"You okay, Angel?" Damian asks. Dad releases me and I see Damian helping her up. A light purple bruise was imprinted under her left eye, on her cheek bone.
"I'm... fine," she answers slowly.
"You really are a jerk, Gabriel," Damian hisses. Gabe is silent. "Morgan, do you think your mom would be okay giving Angel an ice pack?"
"Not at all." Morgan shakes her head. "Just tell her she bumped into Jarvis while he was working, nothing serious."
"Alright, thanks. Come on." He leads Angel out of the room.
Gabriel
I watch in silence as Damian leaves with the girl I punched. What is wrong with you today? I think to myself.
"Dude," Cooper grips my shoulder. "What was that about?" I don't want to meet his disappointed eyes.
"I'm sorry," I apologize quickly. Cooper sighs.
"I'm just glad you guys stopped arguing," Morgan eyes me.
"Hey, at least I didn't destroy your 'valued armor'." I roll my eyes.
"What do you mean by that?" Morgan snaps.
"Nothing. Never mind." I roll my eyes once more and glance over at the armor stand.
"I need to work on it, anyways. Jarvis."
"Yes, sir," Jarvis responds immediately.
"How are we doing on the girl?" Morgan rests a hand on the metal box. The inside flickers blue.
"All good so far."
Morgan sighs. "Great. Keep up the good work. If there are any updates, please let me know."
"Of course, sir."
"Why–" I cut myself off from the question.
"Why, what?" Morgan asks.
"Nothing." I shake my head. Why does Jarvis do everything? I think bitterly.
"Alright then. Mr. Banner?"
"Yes, Morgan?" He tightens his grip on Lyra's shoulder.
"Would you mind watching Origin for me? I need to continue working on the suit."
"Sure, whatever you need." He nods.
"Thank you." Morgan rushes past him out of the small room in the wall. She heads over to a large wooden desk with tools and paper on it.
"I'm going to ask if I can have a snack. I'll be back in a minute," Cooper says.
"Can you grab me something too?" I ask quickly. He hesitates for a moment.
"Sure," he answers with a smile. I watch him as he walks to the glass door where we came in. "Be back, Morgan!" he calls.
"Be quick!" Morgan counters with a small laugh.
"Sure, but it's not like I'm any use to you anyways." He shrugs and pulls the glass door opened.
My original reaction was to laugh, but I can't after what I just did. I bite my lip
"Gabriel." I turn my head to see Lyra looking me in the eye.
"What?" I ask.
"Yes," she replies sternly.
"Huh?" I tilt my head.
"You answer with a 'yes.'"
"Oh, sorry. Yes, Lyra?" I correct myself.
"Why did you do that?" she asks.
"I... don't know," I answer slowly, looking over my shoulder at the glass door across the room.
Cooper
I yawn and jog up the last few steps. I look around for a moment before stepping into the living room.
No one was there.
"Guys–" I start. Something catches on the back of my head and I get pulled backwards. Someone grabs my shoulder and wraps their arm around my neck, covering my mouth with their hand before I can yell.
"Shhh!" someone hisses. I look in the corner of my eye to see Damian's fearful eyes. "They found us," he whispers as quietly as he can. My body goes into shock once I realize who he's talking about. A shiver goes down my spine.
"Search the house," I hear a new voice. Panic runs through my mind as Damian pulls us closer into the wall. "Split up." Loud footsteps fill the house.
"Do you know how to fight?" Damian whispers into my ear as quietly as he dared. I nod slightly in his arms.
He slowly lets go of me as a girl dressed in blue armor appears around the corner.
"Hey!" She spots us immediately. My heart skips a beat as a web shoots past me and catches the Kree soldier's arm. Before I can blink, Damian pulls back, causing her to launch into the air, right towards me.
Without thinking, I raise my fist and punch her face as hard as I can. My knuckles crack at the impact. She falls on top of me, taking me with her. My hand is starting to go numb from punching her.
"Ow–" I managed not to yell. I rolled my eyes back, pulling back tears as well. She fell with her knee right where you never want someone's knee to be.
"You... rat!" She pushes herself up as Damian punches her right in the jaw. She fell limp against my body again. I shiver from the coldness of the armor.
"Could you, y'know, help?" I asked, almost at a whisper.
"There you are! Get over here!" a man shouts. I look to the side to see identical blue armor coming around the corner.
"Hold on." Damian jumped over me as I struggled to push the Kree girl off of me.
I see Damian dodge a punch from the other soldier. He aims his web at his face, but he grabs onto Damian's wrist, holding it tight.
"Ahhh." The soldier twisted his wrist to the side, stunning him into place. "Got you now, insect."
"Damian!" I yell in panic. The Kree in blue armor grabs Damian's other wrist when he tries to shoot another web.
"Damain!" I yell louder, shaking in fear as I use all my strength to try and get myself out from my not-so-helpful position.
"Ahh!" Damian cries out in pain as the soldier jerks his wrist sideways. There was a crack as the soldier twisted his wrist even farther. "Ow, ah! That hurts! Please stop–OW!" Damian rambles in panic.
I groan as I push the girl soldier off one of my legs. I hear a crack from my knee and I manage to push her off of me.
"Cooper– AHH!" I gasp as Damian gets tossed fiercely into the wall. He falls to the ground limp. A dent is clearly visible in the wall he hit. I look up just in time to get punched right in the face by the soldier. Then, everything goes black.
Morgan
I yawn. The three had been gone for a while now. How long does it take to get an ice pack and two drinks? I ask myself. I bite my lip. "I'll be right back guys," I call as I head to the glass door.
All of a sudden, there's a thump and a yell. I jump in surprise.
"What was that?" Gabriel calls out to me.
"You guys heard it too?" Lyra asks. I look over my shoulder to see the two and Mr. Banner looking up to the ceiling.
"You three, go check it out." Mr. Banner says. "I'll stay with Origin."
"Alright, come on," I reply in a rush.
The three of us hurry upstairs as quickly as possible. Soon enough, we hear whispers from unknown figures.
"The two are knocked out. Should we bring them back to the ship with the girl?" someone asks. My eyes go wide. The strangers got Angel, Damian, and Cooper. I bite my lip as I feel a strong hand push me to the side. Gabriel pushes past me and stomps up the rest of the stairs.
"Gabe, no!" I hiss through my teeth. Gabriel launches himself into the living room.
"Don't touch my best friend–" he starts, but pauses for a split second as his eyes go wide with fear. "Kree soldiers!" he whispers quickly as there was a blast. Wires clung to Gabe's shirt and he was vibrating himself to the ground a moment later. Lyra and I both gasp. He had been electrocuted by the Kree Soldiers.
"Gabe!" Lyra tries pushing past me and I grab her ankle, pulling her back right before she clung to the Gabe's limp body.
"Idiot, if you touch him you'll be down too!" I hiss. Then, a shadow comes above us in the light of the living room.
"Well, well, well, what do we have here?" One of the soldiers asks. I look up and growl in my throat. He had teal and blue armor that covered every part of his body except his head. "Do you have more friends downstairs?" He asks with a smirk.
"It's just us." I mumble, stretching out my words. I prey that it makes me look intimidated and scared.
"Then you wouldn't mind us checking in your home would you?" he took a step forward.
I took a step back, careful of my footing. The stairs were steep and I didn't want to fall.
I breathed out a trembling sigh. "D-don't hurt us or our friends, please." I glanced over to Lyra and then Gabe.
The soldier paused. "It depends what you choose to do next." he threatened.
"What do we do?" Lyra whispers in my ear.
I bite my lip. Origin was still healing and Mr. Banner didn't have much time to hide. Lyra and I could be in danger as well as the others. What should happen next?
Damian
Everything was still black. I wanted to cry. My head pulsed with hammering pain. I couldn't move. My whole body was in pain. All I could think about is what would happen to Angel and the others.
I couldn't stop thinking about how the soldiers ambushed us, knocked out Angel, and took her away while I hid.
I was scared. Not only for our safety, but for everyone else's. Especially Morgan's...
